LiGHT WORK is a dedicated area for anyone who needs to complete office tasks during the two day show, so they don’t have to worry about being away from their desk.

In a quiet location upstairs on the gallery of the Business Design Centre, visitors will find a remote office space complete with dedicated wi-fi, charging points and co-working desk space - there’s no need to leave the exhibition to get the job done, we have everything you need on site.

LiGHT 25 is so much more than your standard trade show, it is a great way to co-work and network with others in the industry, guaranteeing that time away from your desk will still be productive.

Associations Lounge

The Associations Lounge is back for a third year and is this year, supported by Studio Due. A space for industry associations DALI Alliance, IALD, LIA, ILP, and SLL to share their ongoing work and information about membership, it will also host a small talks programme.

A DALI Alliance workshop; networking lunch in collaboration with Studio Due and lighting designer David Atkinson; and a late-night Silhouette Awards event will also occupy the lounge.

The VLDC and Lighting Police will also have a presence in the Lounge on the first day of the show, hosting a panel discussion titled ‘Lighting Confessions: Uncomfortable Truths About Collaboration’.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a comfortable lounge style environment while taking advantage of complementary refreshments, networking events and a dedicated talks programme, which will feature presentations and panels.

All talks are completely free to attend for registered visitors but space in the Associations Lounge is limited.

The Lounge will also host a Silhouette Awards presentation on the opening day of the show and the LiGHT Lunch networking event will return on Thursday 21 November and will be co-hosted by Studio Due.

Networking - Late Night Opening

Wednesday 19 November 6 - 9pm

The opportunities to network with industry friends and colleagues is never-ending at LiGHT.

As well as arranging meetings with exhibitors on their stands, there’s the on-site cafe, Jacks on the gallery level – where you can grab a coffee or sit down for something to eat with colleagues and peers; or head to the dedicated workspace LiGHT WORK for quieter surroundings, allowing you to discuss potential project collaborations in more detail.

The show stays open until 9pm on the first day – taking on a more relaxed vibe in the evening, with plenty of exhibitors hosting stand parties and serving refreshments throughout the Business Design Centre. There will also be three bar areas on the Gallery Level - the Decorative Zone Bar, inside the Associations Lounge and a refreshments station in the Technical Zone.

The late-night opening runs from 6-9pm on Wednesday 19 November. Attendees must still register for the event to gain access.

This year’s LiGHT Lunch, taking place in the Associations Lounge on the Gallery level, will be co-hosted by lounge sponsor Studio Due.

We invite LiGHT 25 visitors to enjoy a presentation by renowned lighting designer, David Atkinson, who will be discussing the challenges of lighting the exterior of The Alif Mobility Pavilion, designed by Foster + Partners.

One of the signature EXPO 2020 Pavilions, it featured a lively, dynamic landscape conceived as a fairground with undulating tracks and demo areas for the latest innovations related to mobility.

This presentation will be followed by a complimentary LiGHT Lunch and networking opportunity.

What sparked the idea for Re:Vision?

We have a personal fascination with how different life forms perceive the world — how each species, in unimaginable ways, experiences a reality that is completely differently from ours, despite inhabiting the same planet. When you consider this, you naturally begin to think about the impact that we as lighting designers might be having on those experiences by introducing artificial light into their habitats. This installation is intended to start to open minds to this and stimulate a conversation about how we really should start to think much wider and consider the needs of not just humans, but the other living beings that share our spaces.

How did you translate scientific research about colour perception into an artistic, immersive experience?

Attempting to understand and imagine the differences in the visual experience from species to species is very difficult, as the differences are complex. For example, species vary in their field of view, depth perception, and sensitivity to light and ability to see different parts of the spectrum. Some see ultraviolet, others perceive selected colours discretely rather than as blends as we do, and many inhabit visual worlds entirely inaccessible to usbound as we are within the limits of our own human visual system. So, the installation cannot and does not attempt to recreate the experiences of other species - that would be impossible - but instead hones in on one of the most accessible aspects of the visual experience of the world: colour. We researched the spectral profile of a selected number of animals and used this to create a series of immersive environments using only the colours each of those creatures can experience. Then, we included Ishihara colour blindness charts within the environment. The Ishihara plates feature an array of

coloured dots arranged to form numbers or shapes, and these may be visible or not depending on the colour spectrum at play. The idea is to give viewers some sense of the impact this altered spectrum might have on the perception of world – but of course, each person’s experience of the plates could also be impacted by the differences in their own visual system – so it is not a simulation but a means to spark curiosity and stimulate conversation in a fun, sensory way.

How has your collaboration with formalighting supported and shaped this project?

Our partnership with formalighting has been great. We always begin a project with what we want to achieve and what we want the light to do, and formalighting have been excellent in supporting us to deliver our vision using their range of quality products. They also have some great innovationslike their motorised equipment - that are allowing us to experiment with delivering light in new ways.

What do you hope visitors take away from experiencing Re:Vision?

As philosopher Thomas Nagel wrote in What Is It Like to Be a Bat?, we can never truly experience the world as another creature does. At best, we can simulate fragments of it. Our installation embraces this limitation, offering a simple, beautiful and accessible way to prompt discussion and expand how we think about design that considers the needs of all the living beings of our planet.
