21 Line-Up of the Year

WELCOME... Welcome to the European Festival Awards! It’s time to look back over another memorable festival year, shine a spotlight on the vision, expertise and effort that powers the greatest festival industry in the world, and to celebrate being part of it together. 2017 has been an especially vibrant and eventful year for European festivals and the public’s love of the culture has never been stronger – as shown by increased ticket sales across the sector and public votes in these awards. There have been some challenging external circumstances to contend with – from the more predictable wet weather to the less anticipated fallout from heightened security concerns. With more festivals having applied to participate in these awards than ever before, confidence and solidarity have, if anything, only increased in the market, which is an encouraging sign against the more unsettling, divisive political cloud sweeping the globe. Congratulations to tonight’s winners – all well-deserved. This evening is about everyone involved in the European festival industry. We’re all part of something unique and very special that lights up the lives of tens of millions each year. That’s what we’re celebrating tonight. Cheers! The European Festival Awards Team

HOW THE AWARDS ARE DECIDED The winners of the European Festival Awards are determined via the following procedures: Best Major, Best Medium, Best Small, Best New & Best Indoor Festival In these categories, all European Festival Awards applications first go to a public vote in order to create longlists. The EFA Jury Club – comprising 30 established festival promoters from at least 10 European countries and a panel of 10 European industry experts from at least five countries – subsequently determine the shortlists and winners. 25% of the public vote factors into the final shortlist and winner. Industry judges cannot vote for their own events. Best Newcomer and Line-Up of the Year The EFA Jury Club curates the shortlists of 10 nominees each in these categories. The public then votes to decide the final winners. Promoter of the Year and Agent of the Year The EFA Jury Club determines both the shortlists and winners of these categories. Brand Activation, Green Operation, H&S Innovation, Take a Stand Juries from EMAC Group, GO Group, YES Group, and Take a Stand, respectively, select the shortlists and winners of these categories. With a tendency to shy away from big names and shift the focus towards specific genres and unique non-musical experiences, the rising popularity of these events demonstrates that unpredictability and character pay off. Who will pick up the prize this year?

BEST INDOOR FESTIVAL Those averse to camping out in the sticks can enjoy these urban events a little more, safe in the knowledge that they’ll be [hopefully] returning to a bed at the end of the night. Sold either on a show-by-show basis, or via an all encompassing wristband, they give people chance to see multiple acts in the comfort of the indoors. Which one had you ditching green fields for the concrete jungle?

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR IN ASSOCIATION WITH

It’s not easy being relatively unknown on a festival bill, but it’s a fantastic opportunity to have thousands of people hear your music. With unsigned and relatively unknown acts, or just those who have been working for years with few chart hits on almost every line-up, which was the most promising?

LINE-UP OF THE YEAR IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Picking the right bill will make or break a festival – no mean feat when there are hundreds of others trying to better you and a decreasing pool of established acts to bid on. Whether it’s about securing the biggest names in the world, putting together special collaborations, or just knowing what the audience wants, our judges are looking for the festival that displayed the most vision when booking acts.

THE AWARDS

THE BRAND ACTIVATION AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Sponsorship is a revenue stream that many festivals now depend on for their very existence. Yet creating an effective brand strategy around festivals that adds, rather than detracts from the experience is an art form in itself. This award celebrates the most creative and well-executed sponsor activity this year.

THE AWARDS

THE GREEN OPERATIONS AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Here Yourope and the GO Group jointly recognise the festivals that have made a significant contribution to or achievement towards developing more sustainable events. This may be through practises and systems introduced at their own event(s), through the development of good practices that they have shared with other events, a specific innovation, or through continued improvements over a number of years. The award is judged and awarded by a panel made up of experts not directly linked to any specific festival with the exception that the previous year’s winner will be invited to cast a vote for the following year’s award only.

THE AWARDS

YES GROUP H&S INNOVATION AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Launched in 2013, this award recognises innovation in health & safety at music festivals. Many festivals have developed, or are in the process of developing, new ways to enhance health & safety within their crowded spaces. Some go to great efforts to deliver new and exciting products and services, which keep the audience ever safer and reduce the risks within the event environment. These innovations can inform and positively change public behaviour and also create a safety culture throughout the event industry.

THE AWARDS

THE TAKE A STAND AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH

The current political and cultural climate can be diplomatically described as ‘challenging.’ Whether it’s kneeling sportsmen in the US or artists like Prophets Of Rage writing about how to “Unf*ck The World”, there is a new demand for statements and positive action; a movement in line with Yourope’s ‘Take A Stand’ awareness campaign for civil engagement. For the first time this year, The European Festival Awards hands out the Take A Stand Award, honouring political and social activities and initiatives by European festivals; recognising those speaking up for peaceful dialogue, humanity, tolerance and mutual understanding.

THE AWARDS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD DEDICATED TO AN INDIVIDUAL WHOSE PERSONAL VISION AND ENERGY HAS PROPELLED THE ENTIRE FESTIVAL MARKETPLACE FORWARD IN A DYNAMIC, CREATIVE AND POSITIVE WAY.

THIS YEAR’S WINNER

DANIEL ROSSELLAT The European Festival Awards is proud to present this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Daniel Rossellat, President of Paléo Festival Nyon. Born on 22nd August 1953, Rossellat grew up in the countryside just outside Nyon and at the age of 19 became a youth worker. It was at about this time that he got together with a few friends and organised his first concerts at the Folk-Club de l’Escalier, which was to become ‘Paléo Arts & Spectacles’ in 1975, the association that is still responsible for organising Paléo Festival Nyon today. At a time when the profession of event organising was still in its infancy, Rossellat spent several years juggling between his responsibilities at Paléo, his studies in engineering and placements as a trainee journalist before finally inventing himself an entirely new and hitherto unknown job, that of festival director. Across 42 editions, Paléo Festival has attracted more than six million festivalgoers and is today a major European cultural event. With total crowds of more than 230,000 over six days, the Festival has built up a loyal and enthusiastic following. Recognition has come from fellow professionals too. Both the Festival and its charismatic figurehead have received numerous awards. In 2007, the French minister of culture and communication honoured Rossellat with the rank of Knight of the order of Arts and Letters and then in 2016 with the rank of Officer of the order of Arts and Letters. The Festival has been awarded several prizes and certificates in recognition of its cultural work and for its environmental protection policy. True to his role as managing director, Rossellat captains a happy ship with over 60 permanent salaried staff, an organising committee with over 100 members and more than 4,800 volunteers. His creative capacity and his qualities as a manager of large scale projects did not escape the notice of the Swiss national Expo 02, who appointed him head of events in 1999, a job involving the organising of 13,500 shows in 160 days. The enthusiastic and atypical boss of Paléo brings sincerity and simplicity to his job at the Festival as well as to his other spheres of activity, always placing friendship and human relations at the centre of his concerns.
