BEAUTY IS TRUTH, TRUTH BEAUTY. A STORY OF FENG SHUI AND WHITE SPACES

There are things that are simply beautiful. Not just because we like them. But because they rest within themselves – guided by an inner principle that endures beyond trends or opinions. The classic proportions of a Greek temple. The balance of a space shaped by the rules of Feng Shui. Or the lines of an eyewear frame in which form, color and function stand in perfect harmony. In aesthetics, universal laws exist – insights that have proven true for centuries. Those who follow them do many things right. The same applies to well-designed eyewear as to the creation of an inviting store. Light, proportions, colors, materials – all of it influences how we feel. One could also say: aesthetics sells. Yet the true power of aesthetics does not lie in the rulebook – but in the personal signature. Rules create a foundation – but only personality gives aesthetics depth. Conviction shapes identity. Especially in eyewear design, it is often the conscious deviation that creates tension. An unexpected color accent, a rarely used material or an asymmetry that draws the eye. When brands succeed in developing their own design language, aesthetics becomes part of their DNA – and a safeguard against sameness. At SPECTR, individual aesthetics is paramount. We have a clear idea of what an eyewear magazine should look like. Our shoots come with a fashion attitude. The layout breathes white space. Our models don’t smile – and they don’t touch the glasses. Our texts are easy to digest and aim to entertain and inspire readers. We trust in universal aesthetic rules and mix them with our SPECTR attitude. Enjoy discovering new eyewear – and reading the stories of the people behind it. SD

VISIONARY DESIGN MEETS TIMELESS CRAFT

This collaboration reads like a love letter to craftsmanship and creative audacity. When HOFFMANN NATURAL EYEWEAR, revered for its mastery of natural horn, joins forces with THIERRY LASRY, the Parisian designer celebrated for his bold, sculptural style, something truly

»Arsony«

exceptional is born. Each frame in this exclusive capsule collection is crafted from genuine natural horn, a material that has become a signature for HOFFMANN over decades of meticulous refinement. Here, horn

becomes canvas and sculpture alike, animated by LASRY’s distinctive

design language – clean, sharp, and unapologetically modern. What emerges is not merely eyewear, but a collection of wear-

able art objects – where innovation and heritage intertwine. This is a meeting of minds that embraces rarity, celebrates tactility, and speaks directly to collectors and aesthetes with a taste for the extraordinary. In addition to the four optical glasses shown here, the collection

also includes two premium sunglasses (see “Harbor Haze,” page 113).

“THIERRY LASRY EMBODIES A DISTINCTIVE VISION OF MODERNITY AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSION IN THE WORLD OF EYEWEAR. HIS DESIGNS ARE BOLD, AVANT-GARDE, AND TIMELESS – TRUE DESIGN STATEMENTS. which customers fit us. It was mainly the bold independent opticians from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Most of them still work with us today and are part of our story. They supported us when we had more idealism than structure. Was there a moment when you realized: this is more than just a good idea?

Yes, there was. Even before the actual founding, we made a custom frame for the brother of one of our co-founders, who has Down syndrome. Seeing how naturally he could wear that frame and how much it improved his daily life made it clear that this was more than an interesting product idea. We understood that individualization isn’t just a technical advantage, but can make a real difference in people’s lives. That moment showed us the value we could create – and why this journey is worth it. What was special about a YOU MAWO frame in the early years?

YOU MAWO

YOU MAWO

»Gordo«

»Coldfall«

It was lightweight, precise and radically individual. In an industry where people previously had to adapt to products, we flipped the logic. The frame follows the anatomy of the face. Not the other way around. This principle shaped us and laid the foundation for everything that came later. How does the custom-fit process work for you?

Our partner optician scans the customer’s face. From this data, a precise digital model is created, forming the basis for individual adjustment. The optician then optimises all relevant parameters: from size and bridge width to nose pads and temple length, all the way to angles such as inclination and base curve. Once the design is final, the frame is produced near Munich. Every production step takes place in our own factory and is designed for maximum quality and sustainability. How has your design approach evolved over the years?

At the beginning, our design philosophy was very clear: function and comfort first. With the Classic Collection, we created a 77

SALT. REVIVES THE WRAP WITH REFINED CURVATURE AND ENDURING STYLE

The wrap silhouette is back – not as a throwback, but as a modern sculpture of speed, confidence, and Californian ease. Once rooted in ’90s surf and street culture, today’s wrap frames channel fluid curvature with a refined sense of craft. SALT. OPTICS embodies this revival with effortless authenticity. For its 20 Year Limited Collection, the Costa Mesa brand revisits the wraps that shaped its early identity, translating them into contemporary icons with precision and restraint. Handcrafted in Japan through a meticulous 130-step process, each SALT. wrap fuses aerodynamic form with long-lasting function. Premium

mono-block acetate, sculpted pads, titanium details, and polarized lenses create a seamless fit that feels both performance-driven and timeless. True to the brand’s DNA – sea, air, land, timelessness – these frames echo California’s natural lines without ever feeling flashy. MODERN MASCULINITY – FRAMED TO PERFECTION Between heritage and the present, bespoke tailoring and street style: Dandy District explores the new codes of modern masculinity. For this SPECTR shoot, Düsseldorf-based photographer Estelle Klawitter has created a visual language that blends classic elegance with urban realism – striking exactly

the right tone for a new generation of style-conscious men. Today’s dandy doesn’t wear a corset of etiquette; he plays confidently with style. Once known as a gentleman with a flair for eccentricity, the dandy spirit now translates into cultivated ease, an appreciation for quality – and a wardrobe chosen with intention and attention to detail. It’s about nonchalant finesse, about aesthetics with attitude. The modern dandy curates his appearance without shouting through fashion. And that’s precisely what the optical frames in this shoot do as well – sometimes through subtle shaping, sometimes through material choices or well-placed details. The curated models celebrate understatement and individuality in equal measure: REIZ delivers sharp clarity, I-SPAX offers double-bridge un-

derstatement, and MODO plays with the lightness of classic design language. MARC O’POLO gives the modern dandy two refined Clubmaster interpretations; BARTON PERREIRA contributes an elegant take on the style, while METROPOLITAN impresses with masculine composure. YOU MAWO and KLENZE & BAUM show that 3D-printed eyewear can be equally style-

defining. And the best fit in this shoot comes from DANDY’S – where the name says it all. Dandy District is a tribute to men who know what they wear – and who leave an impression without ever being intrusive. .

ICONIC SUNGLASSES FOR A CONFIDENT FEMININITY Between waterways and brick walls, where history meets the present, photographer Tanja Tremel stages a new vision of femininity. Hamburg’s Speicherstadt becomes an urban backdrop for a sunglasses editorial that blends fashion-forward attitude with architectural clarity. At its center: a selection of iconic sunglasses – striking, modern, confident. The curated styles explore expressive, polygonal shapes, seen in designs by CAZAL, METROPOLITAN and CLEMENCE & MARGAUX.

Color variations, sometimes paired with transparent elements, define the aesthetic of DANDY’S and BARTON PERREIRA. More under-

stated styles make their way from Switzerland: GÖTTI and EINSTOFFEN. Completing the portfolio for Iconic Sunglasses for a Confident Femininity are models from BLACKFIN, HOFFMANN NATURAL EYEWEAR, and KADOR

Fashion-forward, edgy, with a touch of avant-garde – perfectly aligned with the sharp contours of the northern metropolis and tuned to the sunglasses selection. CURATED LEGACY In a world of fleeting trends, MATSUDA offers a compelling reminder that true style is eternal. The Heritage Collection is not just a nod to the past – it is a carefully curated archive of artistry and innovation, brought vividly into the now. Each frame in the collection is handpicked from the rich archives of MATSUDA and reimagined with a reverence for its origin and a vision for its future. These eyewear icons are meticulously handcrafted in Sabae, Japan – an epicenter of optical excellence. Here, over 71 hours and more than 250 intricate steps are dedicated to the making of each piece. The result is a harmonious blend of finely engraved titanium,

sumptuous Japanese acetate, and that unmistakable MATSUDA unisex elegance.

First launched in 1989, MATSUDA’s eyewear line quickly disrupted the status quo with its avant-garde edge and architectural precision. Drawing on artisanal techniques from the Meiji and early Shōwa periods – some dating back to the late 1800s – the brand fuses historical craftsmanship with cutting-edge engineering. The Heritage Collection bridges these worlds, crafting frames that transcend eras. Iconic reissues like the »10611H« – renowned for its intricate detailing – and the bold silhouette of the »10601H« embody this philosophy. These aren’t mere replicas; they’re re-interpretations of design legends, elevated through modern materials like lightweight titanium and refined acetate. Produced in strictly limited numbers, each frame is a wearable work of art – testament to a legacy built on precision, vision, and storytelling. At its core, MATSUDA’s mantra remains unchanged: “No future can exist without the past.” With the Heritage Collection, that past is not just preserved – it is reinvigorated. These frames stand as proof that design rooted in heritage can still lead the conversation.

Beyond the tangible, MATSUDA’s world is encapsulated in Apeiro, the brand’s latest manifesto. It’s a universe of infinite possibility where art, culture, and craftsmanship collide – unfolding in eyewear that defies both time and convention. The visual language of Apeiro is just as considered as the frames themselves. MATSUDA presents its icons in stark, cinematic compositions that evoke both intimacy and grandeur. Shot in shadowy light, with textures of metal, skin, and acetate catching the camera’s gaze, each image celebrates the sculptural nature of eyewear. This aesthetic – minimal, meticulous, timeless – mirrors the collection’s ethos: to bridge heritage and modernity through objects of profound visual and emotional weight. Just as MATSUDA crafts its frames with deliberate slowness and

ECO Eyewear once again redefines sustainability – this time with a

material built for the future: recycled aluminium. The innovative alloy, certified under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), contains 70% postconsumer recycled content. It dramatically reduces environmental impact without compromising on lightness, flexibility, or durability. Another confident step in ECO’s mission to unite sustainability, comfort, and timeless design in one refined vision. The new Recycled Aluminium Collection features five striking models: a balanced unisex pantos shape (»Neos«), a bold rectangular silhouette (»Thule«) a feminine hexagonal design (»Aura«), a feminine butterfly shape (»Beryll«) and a men's squared shape (»Helios«). Each frame celebrates the raw beauty of aluminium with a matte metallic coating that creates a satin finish and sculpted depth. Lighter than titanium, the material gives the frames a sense of elegant clarity – modern, confident, and effortless to wear.

SCULPTED SERENITY

BARTON PERREIRA – SHAPED BY LIGHT Between the Atlantic breeze and the dramatic backdrop of Table

Mountain, the latest creations from BARTON PERREIRA unfold in a light that reveals their full artistic depth. For our collection shoot, photographer Andrea Kadler brought the Californian luxury brand’s new release to life on location in Cape Town. This is a collection that pushes boundaries. Creative Director Patty Perreira speaks of “more sculpture, more dimension”. She speaks of frames “that don’t just adorn the face, but transform it.” And indeed, the new designs read like architectural statements: sculptural bevels, organic geometries, and contours that move far beyond surface-level styling. Every piece in this collection carries an attitude. A deliberate slowing down – standing in contrast to the rapid churn of industrial production. Instead: Japanese craftsmanship. Here, acetate is not simply cut, but shaped, polished, faceted – through a process that demands time, mastery, and a human touch. “Our artisans still work with files and fingertip precision,” Perreira emphasizes. “It’s a lost art – and that’s exactly what makes our frames extraordinary.”

The color palette? Quietly luxurious. Warm neutrals that behave like light glancing off glass, paired with classic Havana tones and ombré lenses reminiscent of Venetian Murano glass. Not loud fashion, but chromatic intelligence – rooted in emotion, memory, and the California sun. And as Kadler’s images prove, the collection’s understated nobility resonates just as powerfully in South Africa. Many models take their names from architects, artists, and visionaries – individuals who reshaped the world not through spectacle, but

through subtle, enduring ideas. These frames tell their stories without raising their voice. They create space for identity without overshadowing it. The new collection stands for creative independence, but also for global relevance. A NEW REALM OF PRECISION AND POISE After Sopraterra, EINSTOFFEN shifts its gaze further – beyond the horizon, into finer layers of air. With Ætherra, a new chapter begins: a collection that unites lightness, depth and balance. It reflects the brand’s evolution – a deliberate turn toward clarity, structure and artisanal precision. From 2026 onward, EINSTOFFEN will reorganize its collection: four lines, four perspectives – Roots, Essentials, Core and IX. Each line embodies a different facet of the brand, yet together they tell a story of continuity and renewal, of form, material and the art of seeing. The new premium line IX marks a highlight of this evolution. Part of the collection was created in collaboration with eyewear designer Cécille Hoggenmüller (CÉHO Studio). Manufactured in Japan and released in a limited edition, it combines technical perfection with intuitive design. In IX, titanium meets acetate, engraving meets shine – precision meets soul. IX is quiet, precise, refined – a tribute to craftsmanship, material culture and the timelessness of the extraordinary. Co-founder Ramon Studer offers insight into the latest developments of the Swiss brand – and explains the idea behind the new premium line IX.

Hello Ramon, EINSTOFFEN is still a comparatively young brand, yet it has quickly established itself in the market of modern eyewear labels. What does EINSTOFFEN stand for today?

EINSTOFFEN stands for independence, precision and the joy of

creating. Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly on our products – always with time, heart and a high standard of design and quality. We’re not driven by trends, but by doing things right. With joy, with intention – and with love for detail. Your orientation is young, cosmopolitan and urban. But since Sopraterra, the dialogue with natural elements has also become more prominent. How does that fit with you as an eyewear brand?

Nature has always been part of our identity. We come from St. Gallen, from a region where forest, mountains and city flow into one another. Our first claim once was “Raw Nature meets Urban Lifestyle” – and in essence, that idea still guides us today. We started with wooden frames, and many people on our team spend

153

a lot of time outdoors: in the mountains, in the forest, by the water.

So, nature and city don’t contradict each other?

No, they’re two poles that balance each other – and it’s exactly from this tension that our style emerges. With Ætherra you’re taking this a step further. What defines the new campaign?

Ætherra continues the journey: from the earth into the air. The campaign focuses on light, transparency and subtle transitions. It feels less heavy, less earthy – more atmospheric and open. A play of layers, reflections and balance. What can you reveal about your 2026 colorways?

Our 2026 palette remains calm, but gains more depth. The colors unfold like the first light of spring – natural, nuanced, somewhere between warmth and transparent coolness. And sometimes there’s a pop of color at the right place, occasionally more intense than usual. But always balanced, always with sensitivity. You’re dividing your collection into four lines – Roots,

Essentials, Core and IX. What do these four lines stand for?

They reflect what defines EINSTOFFEN: the dialogue between origin and change, between function and attitude. The four lines share the same signature: love for detail, refined subtlety. SPECTR // COLLECTION SHOOT

154

»Nævra« shirt PUMA

Is this also a step toward more identity or orientation –

EINSTOFFEN »Yllæra« shirt FILLING PIECES

internally as well as externally?

Yes, absolutely. The new structure first helped us internally. Our collection has grown so much in recent years that it was easy to lose overview. The four lines bring order to our planning – and simultaneously make visible to the outside what facets shape EINSTOFFEN. We’re particularly interested in the new IX line. First,

IX in one sentence?

IX unites all our experience in form, material and precision. Now in more detail: How does IX fit into the philosophy of EINSTOFFEN?

IX is the essence of our journey. Over the years we’ve learned what precision truly means – technically, but also emotionally. With IX, we deliberately set accents: through materials, engravings, small details that only reveal themselves when you look closely. The line is controlled and clear, yet it has presence. For us, IX is not a new beginning but the logical next step – the point where everything we’ve learned comes together. You describe the line as “quiet, precise and complete” – strong words. How does this translate into design and production? 155

SPECTR // COLLECTION SHOOT

EINSTOFFEN »Æsoris« shirt FILLING PIECES hat STYLIST’S OWN

At EINSTOFFEN IX, “quiet” mainly refers to the limitation and numbering: from the start we plan a fixed quantity – with no reproduction and no repetition. This creates an exclusivity that doesn’t need to be loud. No pressure in production. It takes as long as it takes. “Precise” means that every line is intentional, nothing is left to chance – from proportions to the smallest detail. And “complete” means that we only release a model when it feels truly resolved. IX doesn’t follow a collection rhythm; it appears exactly when a design is ready: coherent, balanced, complete. IX is produced in Japan. What does Japanese craftsmanship mean to you?

Japanese craftsmanship is like Zen in material form: calm, precision, patience. No rush, no noise. Just clarity – and that fits perfectly with EINSTOFFEN IX. Why was limitation so important to you?

With IX, it’s less about commercial goals and more about principle. We wanted to create a line for people looking for something with lasting value – something that still feels right ten years from now.

EINSTOFFEN »Ærun« jacket CALVIN KLEIN

That’s why we limit clearly and consistently. No repetition, no mass, but frames that have their own moment and are allowed to remain. Collector’s pieces in the best sense: consciously chosen, consciously worn. einstoffen.com SPECTR // COLLECTION SHOOT

WHEN HUE MEETS YOU – A STUDY IN CHROMATIC CONFIDENCE When form meets color, design begins to speak – softly, boldly, playfully or with precision. In Color Theory, the power of the right tone becomes unmistakably clear. Munichbased photographer Oliver Spies has created a visual series for SPECTR that elevates the color wheel to a fashion formula. Whether translucent shades, vibrant accents or rich solid hues – every frame here tells its own color story. The selection we curated is as stylistically diverse as it is chromatically daring: from the muted pink of MARKUS T to the vivid green of CAZAL, finely

tuned colorways from GÖTTI, J.F. REY and MODO, versatile tonal variations from OWP

and EINSTOFFEN, and striking blue-to-red gradient lenses on the PORSCHE DESIGN frames – perfect for the confident woman. Every nuance is a style statement – and a visual reminder that color expresses attitude. Each brand brings its own interpretation of Color Theory. Oliver Spies’ shoot is a call for more color in everyday life, more character in the details – and for eyewear that does more than simply “suit” someone: our curated eyewear models make faces come alive.

MASUNAGA is celebrating 120 years

of craftsmanship. What does this anniversary mean to you?

Celebrating 120 years is a remarkable milestone – not just for MASUNAGA, but for the entire optical industry. In a market where brands often come and go, MASUNAGA has remained a steadfast presence. Since its founding, the brand has followed one unwavering path: uncompromising quality. This anniversary is a tribute to that legacy, and to the trust that countless other eyewear brands place in MASUNAGA’s craftsmanship. The exclusive anniversary models, created in limited editions, are a technical showcase of what MASUNAGA stands for today. We 175

are extremely proud and honored to be a part of this journey for almost a decade. The brand has a long-standing tradition – what still makes MASUNAGA unique compared to other Japanese or international labels?

MASUNAGA is widely regarded as the

founding father of the Japanese optical industry. While many Japanese brands offer beautiful designs, none can match MASUNAGA’s depth of history, accumu-

lated knowledge, and century-long craftsmanship. What truly sets MASUNAGA apart is its rare commitment to full in-house production – a practice that ensures unmatched quality control and reflects the brand’s refusal to compromise. Which values and principles from the company’s early days still shape the brand’s identity today?

MASUNAGA has been guided by one

clear principle: absolute quality. The brand produces all its frames in-house, ensuring every detail meets its exacting standards. MASUNAGA is still a family-run company, with the current generation proudly safeguarding its heritage. Their presence at international trade shows –

To mark its 120th anniversary, MASUNAGA introduced exclusive models in very limited editions. These frames are a testament to the brand’s technical mastery, crafted with MASUNAGA’s seamless fusion of 18K gold and titanium, balancing elegance with everyday versatility. MASUNAGA is known for a rare fusion

of classic aesthetics and technical innovation. How is that reflected in the new designs?

MASUNAGA has always been recognized

for its distinctive timeless touch and exceptional technical mastery – qualities that make the brand a trustworthy longterm partner in every optical store. This heritage naturally carries through into the latest collection, where MASUNAGA’s signature blend of timeless elegance and cutting-edge craftsmanship is expressed more vividly than ever. How important are materials and technical solutions within the MASUNAGA philosophy?

Materials and technical innovation are at the heart of MASUNAGA’s philosophy. Every frame is crafted from pure titanium, high-density Japanese acetate, or a refined combination of both. Japan’s

In European optical stores, MASUNAGA is seen as a reliable and timeless brand. It’s favored by customers who value pure quality and unmatched wearing comfort. Once someone wears a MASUNAGA frame, they often return to the brand. MASUNAGA does not give in to tempora-

ry trends or passing fashion impulses; instead, it remains true to itself and to its design DNA. What role does the brand’s Japanese heritage play in communicating MASUNAGA across European markets?

MASUNAGA’s heritage remains a powerful part of its story, and many dealers become so inspired that they eventually travel to Japan to visit the MASUNAGA factory. This experience brings the brand’s story to life in a tangible and unforgettable way. Where is MASUNAGA headed in the coming years? What are the main areas of focus?

Brands may come and go – and with them, the consistency of their quality. MASUNAGA will continue to be the quiet

yet dependable force in the optical world – a long-term partner that opticians and customers can always rely on. The brand’s unwavering focus will remain on delivering uncompromising, outstanding quality. Looking back at this anniversary in five years’ time – what would you hope people will say about MASUNAGA?

We hope that five years from now, people will still experience that quiet moment of wonder when they hold a MASUNAGA frame – the kind that brings a smile and makes them say, “Does this level of quality and craftsmanship still exist?” That reaction is the highest compliment a brand can receive. PURE CREATIVE FREEDOM Where dreams and reality dissolve into one another, the visual journey of ENIGMA begins

MOREL »Enigma 11«

– the latest collection from MOREL. Photographed by the artist duo Narènte in Sardinia, a surreal cosmos unfolds: colors glow in a trance-like intensity, flowers turn into eyes, architecture seems to breathe. Beauty is celebrated, nature becomes theatre – a world suspended between daydream and wakefulness. ENIGMA is anything but a conventional design project. It is a manifesto of pure creative freedom. The frames – electrifying, eccentric, almost otherworldly – move within a bold spectrum of colors featuring unique two-tone combinations. This is where imagination meets tangible reality, merging into shapes that intrigue and seduce. SPECTR // COLLECTION SHOOT

Transparent acetates create a floating lightness, reminiscent of that fleeting moment between sleep and awakening. At the same time, deep tones ground the design, giving it substance and presence. MOREL’s renowned technical mastery – from patented hinges to flawless surfaces and intuitive comfort – remains unmistakable throughout. Narènte translates this duality into a photographic language rich with symbolism. The collection becomes part of a living fable, a world that raises questions rather than offering answers. Each frame is a visual riddle – a reflection of personality touched by mystery. ENIGMA embraces bold eccentricity without relying on volume. Reduction is not a sacrifice – it’s a mindset. ByWP, named after its founder Wolfgang Proksch, embodies this design philosophy with a level of consistency rarely seen. Since its beginnings, the brand has stood for a quiet, almost meditative visual language that balances technical precision and minimalist style in a new way. Less, but better – what sounds like a credo becomes tangible in every ByWP collection. The new models are not mere accessories, but wearable design objects that express both personality and progress. Crafted from ultra-light stainless steel or high-quality acetate, the frames combine innovative materials with precise engineering – proving how much impact lies in removing the unnecessary. The current collection, titled The Richness of Simplicity, is an aesthetic statement for those who recognize elegance in reduction. Fine engravings, subtle cut-outs and architectural lines add depth without ever demanding attention. The thoughtful folding of stainless steel recalls origami – artful, yet never decorative. A palette of muted natural tones, paired with matte and polished finishes, conveys a sense of timeless calm. What unites all models is the feeling of barely being there – the result of intelligent construction and a perfect fit. Here, form and function are not opposites but a deliberate unity. No surprise then that ByWP has received multiple international design awards. ByWP speaks to minimalists, architecture lovers, quiet aesthetes. Choosing ByWP means choosing understatement with intent – design that doesn’t shout, but stays. bywp.com 197

THE FUTURE IS PRINTED

As part of this SPECTR 3D Special, we take a closer look at a technology that has now established itself as a solid fixture within modern eyewear manufacturing. In just a short time, 3D printing has evolved from a prototyping tool into one of the most compelling production methods in the premium segment. Where frames were once milled, polished or cut, they are now built layer by layer from fine polyamide powder. Additive manufacturing stands not only for precision and innovation, but also for a new mindset: more sustainable, more flexible, more individual.

HOW 3D TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING EYEWEAR DESIGN Instead of recreating traditional frame components, ROLF integrates functionality

directly into the parts. Here: the patented Flexlock hinge.

manufacturing – the frame is no longer milled or cast from a solid block, but constructed layer by layer. An industrial printer applies microscopically fine polyamide powder, which is then fused with a laser beam. This process, known as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), is currently considered one of the most precise and stable me-

A NEW TAKE ON PRECISION FIT The term “custom made” takes on new meaning in the era of 3D printing. While traditional bespoke craftsmanship was often expensive and labor-intensive, the digital workflow suddenly makes personalization scalable. A detailed 3D scan captures the exact contours of the wearer’s face – from nasal

bridge to ear position. These data are applied directly to the eyewear design. The printer then manufactures the frame precisely according to these specifications – without manual adjustments or physical prototypes. “The real breakthrough came when we linked our software directly to production,” explains YOU MAWO. “It minimized errors while increasing speed and quality.” KLENZE & BAUM, with their fully para-

meterized models, blend customized and serial manufacturing. “We can adapt frames efficiently to individual anatomies without altering the original design.” Even brands that don’t use 3D printing primarily for personalization – such as NIRVAN JAVAN and its ZURICH collection

– benefit from the material’s inherent strengths: bold volumes with minimal weight, integrated hinges, structural sharpness and a level of design freedom previously unattainable.

Pure elegance in a new materiality – 3D printing reinterprets the design language of NIRVAN JAVAN.

i m a g e : KLENZE & BAUM

For NIRVAN JAVAN, this new materiality is an extension, not a departure: “3D printing is not a break from our values, but an additional dimension of our design philosophy.” For the eyewear industry, this marks a quiet revolution. 3D printing does not replace craftsmanship – it expands it. It creates space for new ideas, new surfaces, new ways of thinking. It enables local production to become relevant again – close

to the market, flexible, sustainable. “We are getting closer to our ideal than with any other manufacturing method,” says GÖTTI. “People don’t wear the frames because they are 3D-printed – they wear them because they are excellent.”

CONCLUSION 3D printing is no longer a niche topic but a defining force in the premium segment. The technology changes how eyewear

Beyond aesthetics, the ecological dimension plays a central role. 3D printing is inherently on-demand: frames are only produced when needed. No overstock, no waste, no complex molds. Many brands also handle the entire manufacturing process in-house, reducing transport and energy use even further. For companies like ROLF, GÖTTI and YOU MAWO, this is a clear advantage. ROLF

adds another layer by using renewable castor-based materials. The Tyrolean label also operates fully on-demand with 100% internal production depth – a consistent approach uniting precision, efficiency and responsibility. “Our Bean Glasses prove that high-tech and nature are not opposites,” says ROLF. KLENZE & BAUM also sets a clear sus-

tainability marker by using castor-based materials, and their frames – printed on an EOS machine – develop a deliberately distinctive design character. This illustrates how additive manufacturing is reshaping the industry on multiple levels. NIRVAN JAVAN, for example, sees strategic value in

the technology: it enables new production cycles that are more efficient, flexible and economically meaningful.

At the same time, 3D printing paves the way for entirely new business models. Opticians may soon be able to order frames directly from digital datasets, designers can produce prototypes in hours rather than weeks, and brands can react far more quickly to emerging trends. Ultimately, the technology brings production closer to the idea itself – or, as YOU MAWO aptly puts it: “We no longer design for the machine, but with it.”

ADDITIVE AVANT-GARDE The rise of 3D-printed eyewear in the premium class is the result of a careful balance between innovation and maturity. What sounded like science fiction years ago is now a proven manufacturing system – precise, efficient and aesthetically convincing. Brands that invested early are now reaping the benefits: technical lightness, creative freedom and a visual language that stands apart from classic materials. “Instead of reproducing conventional components, we integrate functions directly into the printed parts,” says ROLF. “Our Flexlock hinge is the proof – elastic, wear-resistant, without screws or additional hardware. We use 3D printing where it brings real added value – not to digitize old ideas.”

is conceived, developed and produced – from the CAD file to the finished frame. It stands for efficiency and responsibility as much as for creativity and expression. When fine layers of polyamide or plantbased materials are fused into frames in Zurich, Konstanz, Munich or Tyrol, it is no longer a futuristic experiment, but everyday reality. 3D printing is here to stay – bridging precision, sustainability and design culture. Fresh from the printer at YOU MAWO – and hand-

KLENZE & BAUM

ENGINEERING PRECISION MEETS DESIGN AESTHETIC Munich-based KLENZE & BAUM combines creative product design with technical precision, demonstrating just how tactile and emotional 3D printing can be. Each frame is built layer by layer from polyamide powder and refined through a proprietary finishing process that perfects both surface and touch. Thanks to fully parameterized models, serial designs can be efficiently adapted to individual anatomies without altering the original aesthetic. KLENZE & BAUM relies on local production, durable materials and

a service philosophy that goes far beyond simple economic efficiency. Signature elements include the patented, screwless hinges that disengage under stress and can be reinserted in seconds – a symbol of functionality, lightness and sustainability. The result is an eyewear aesthetic from Munich’s Glockenbach district that balances precision, emotion and longevity in equal measure.

GÖTTI Temples in 3D-printed polyamide or stainless steel – every DIMENSION frame comes with 100% GÖTTI DNA.

SWISS 3D DESIGN IN TIMELESS CLARITY For nearly a decade, GÖTTI from Zurich has been refining the art of 3D printing, bringing Swiss precision to the world of additive manufacturing. The Dimension collection is developed and produced entirely inhouse – from initial design through printing to final finishing. The result: frames with a surface quality and tactile feel nearly indistinguishable from traditionally crafted eyewear. Through consistent process optimization, meticulous documentation and an exceptional level of design control, GÖTTI has established 3D printing not as an experiment but as a deliberate, fully equivalent production method. The frames embody the essence of the brand: simplicity, technical maturity and timeless aesthetics. That customers now choose the models not because they are 3D-printed, but despite it, shows just how naturally additive manufacturing has become part of GÖTTI’s design culture.

TAILORED DOWN TO THE DETAIL YOU MAWO represents a new dimension in individualized eye-

wear design. The Konstanz-based team uses state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology to capture every contour of the wearer’s face – from nasal bridge to ear position – and transform this data into frames tailored with millimeter precision. The result is a physical object created from digital information that feels as if it were made for one person and one person alone. Produced in Germany using the industrial Powder Bed Fusion 3D printing process, YOU MAWO frames are sustainable, efficient and exceptionally precise.

They are lightweight, robust and defined by a velvety, skin-close texture that conveys both comfort and trust. ROLF 3D printing with the highest sustainability standards: Bean Glasses by ROLF.

RETHINKING NATURE What began with wood has evolved at ROLF into a visionary material philosophy. The family-run company from Lechaschau, Tyrol stands for design, craftsmanship and sustainability – and applies these principles consistently to 3D printing. With the pioneering Bean Glasses collection, ROLF was among the first to create frames made from plant-based material. Their foundation is castor bean oil, a renewable resource that is lightweight, durable and entirely bio-based. The frames are produced via 3D printing, enabling precise geometries, minimal waste and energy-efficient processes. The fusion of natural material and high-tech manufacturing yields eyewear that impresses not only with low weight but also with longevity: the brand’s virtually indestructible hinge, featuring a rotating rubber-ring mechanism, ensures flexibility and everyday durability. Each frame embodies ROLF’s ethos – RETHINK, REUSE, REDUCE – technology in service of a sustainable life cycle. As with all collections from the Tyrolean label, reduction to the essentials remains central. The design is clear, timeless and craft-driven, while production achieves the highest level of technical precision. The result: eyewear that proves the future, nature and design are not opposites but perfectly compatible partners.

NIRVAN JAVAN enters the world of 3D printing for the first time – adding a new facet to its purist design language with complex groove structures, a deep matte finish, and a screwless construction.

NIRVAN JAVAN

CLARITY WITH A COSMOPOLITAN SPIRIT With the ZURICH collection, Swiss brand NIRVAN JAVAN enters the world of 3D printing for the first time – embracing the technology not as an experiment but as a new creative dimension. Known for sharp lines and purist elegance, the brand uses additive manufacturing to further refine its aesthetic vocabulary: intricate groove structures emerge directly in the printing process, bold volumes remain surprisingly lightweight thanks to PA12 nylon, and a fully screwless hinge opens up new structural possibilities. A design collaboration with a renowned industrial designer – initiated for the brand’s 10-year anniversary – introduces a more organic, flowing language that contrasts beautifully with NIRVAN JAVAN’s signature angularity. Despite this new digital materiality, the collection remains deeply rooted in the brand’s identity: reduced form, quiet composition, matte depth – and above all, the iconic black that has long defined the label. For NIRVAN JAVAN, 3D printing is not a departure but a thoughtful expansion of its design philosophy: timeless, precise and driven by a cosmopolitan spirit that adds yet another facet to the future of eyewear.
