BRANCHING OUT

It’s all about the Trees! The Community Roots Program

Wow! I guess winter is here! As I am writing this the low temperature for tonight is supposed to dip down to 14 degrees and it’s only the middle of November. The forestry division is busy planting the last few trees for the year and is still plugging away at removing targeted ash trees to help control the invasive emerald ash borer as well as gearing up for some winter tree pruning. We have just completed our 40th Tree City USA application recognizing the hard-work and commitment that our community has for trees within our beautiful city. When completing this application, it’s a time for reflection on all the work that has been completed throughout the year and the changes and growth to our urban forest which has occurred throughout the last 40. I have been here for 32 of those 40 years and have personally witnessed many of these changes. Remembering large park trees lost to past storms or disease, planting their replacements, and wondering how these small trees (in comparison) could ever take their place. Witnessing the development of new subdivisions and parks, void of any vegetation, and envisioning what the new street and park tree plantings would create in future years. When looking back, it’s sometimes hard to remember those large trees of past or the barrenness of those new subdivisions and parks because now I see trees (though not mature by any means) that have grown significantly to a size that reflects an urban forest that is not only beautiful and appreciated but benefits our community as well. Trees that fill a void in a landscape that nothing else can. Trees that support a healthy environment not only for us but for the wildlife they attract.

As Abraham Lincoln said, “He who plants a tree, plants a hope.”

The City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department has a tree planting program called The Community Roots Program. This is a program where individuals, families, groups or organizations can make a monetary contribution to have a tree planted to honor, commemorate or memorialize individuals or events in one of our 49 parks throughout the city. The forestry staff will assist with the site selection and the appropriate tree for the occasion. Once the tree is planted the names of those honored will be inscribed on a Recognition Leaf which is placed on the Recognition Tree displayed at the EB Shurts Environmental Education Center at the Fox River Sanctuary located at 810 W. College Ave. The current cost for sponsorship is $220.00 which is set by the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Board annually. So please consider supporting our community by enhancing our environmental-quality by having a tree planted in honor of someone or important event that will live on for generations. “When you plant a tree, you plant a legacy.” David Rauterberg, Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry City Forester

Planting trees is a way to support and enhance a healthy environmental-quality for our present community and for generations to come. It is a way to remember and honor events and people that have affected our lives.

Order in the Court Series Power of Attorney for Health Care – What You Need to Know About Advance Directives Creating an advance directive is key to ensuring that your voice is heard. An advance directive is a legal document that allows you to express your decisions about end-of-life care and share that information with family, friends and health care professionals. Despite knowing how valuable these documents are many people don’t take the time to create them because they feel the process is intimidating. This workshop will allay those fears. Join ProHealth Care’s, Jillian Witkowski, MSW, for a step-by step guide to understanding, creating and using these crucial documents. This workshop will examine the purpose and legal standing of advance directives. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to leave the session with a completed document. AGE

Estate Planning (Trust, Wills, Pay or Transfer on Death Designations, Joint Tenancies, and More) No matter how large or modest, everyone has an estate. Your estate is comprised of everything you own – your car, home, real estate, checking and savings accounts, investments, life insurance, retirement funds, furniture and personal possessions. Estate planning also includes planning for your most important assets: underage children, pets or other loved ones. There are many vehicles that you can use to plan your estate. Plans can vary from simple to complex depending on your assets and goals. Planning your estate is not a “one size fits all” approach and Estate Planning Attorney, Melissa Robe, will discuss the many aspects involved including the distribution of assets upon your death, tax minimization, funeral planning and avoiding probate/court proceeding. This workshop is designed to give you an overview of Estate Planning. After the presentation, Attorney Robe will be available to schedule an individual consultation to review your personal estate planning options. The best benefit is peace of mind knowing you have a properly prepared plan in place. AGE

ADULT ENRICHMENT

Power of Attorney for Finance Don’t delay any longer – complete this document in this two night program! We encourage you to bring your spouse or other appointed person to the presentation. A durable power of attorney (aka Power of Attorney for Finance) for finances is a simple and reliable way to arrange for someone to manage your finances if you become incapacitated or otherwise unable to manage them. A financial power of attorney is a good document not only to protect yourself, but it can also be a great blessing for your family. If you become unable to make decisions for yourself and you haven’t prepared a durable power of attorney, a court proceeding is probably inescapable. Your loved ones will have to ask a court for authority over at least some of your financial affairs. Having a Power of Attorney for Finance in place that has the correct language in many cases is also the difference between being able to protect assets in the case of a nursing home/disability situation or having to spend them down. Making “Cents” Out of Government Budgets and Taxes Would you like to learn more about the city budget process, tax levies and tax rates? And, most importantly, how they impact your tax bill? This presentation will take you on an interesting journey through the process. You’ll walk away with a better understanding about how city budgets are balanced, managed and what services are funded through property taxes. You’ll see how the tax rate is calculated and what things can impact it, through easy to follow examples. This session will conclude with a simple dissection of a real property tax bill, including information about your eligibility for property tax credits. Please join Denise Vandenbush, CPA, MST, Special Projects Accountant for the City of Waukesha, for insight into this important process. Ms. Vandenbush has more than 20 years of experience in municipal finance and local government, including previously serving as Finance Director for the Village of Shorewood and the City of Oak Creek, as well as the Finance Manager for the City of Brookfield.
