BRANCHING OUT

Monarch Butterflies are in decline!

Did you Know?

Okay, winter is over (hopefully) and spring is upon us. Time to think about what we want to see in our landscape. Flowering trees, shrubs and perennials. Lots of color and variety. Maybe a little movement with that? A waterfall or a windmill or windsock? Possibly a bird bath to attract various birds of different color and sizes? What else could we imagine? What about something subtle yet eye focusing? What about something that brings us back to our childhood and just reminds us of peace and quiet? Butterflies. Ah yes, Butterflies. Monarch Butterflies. But have you heard? Monarch butterflies are on the decline. This decline is blamed on the reduction of milkweed and other nectar rich plants that are essential for the monarch butterfly to survive and multiply. Monarch Butterflies migrate every winter central Mexico. Each spring they across North America to breed Monarchs will have multiple important that there is throughout their travels

to areas of coastal California and the mountains of leave their overwintering areas and return to vast areas and lay eggs on milkweed, the monarch’s host plant. generations throughout the spring and summer so it is plenty of milkweed, not only at their final destination, but as well. The reduction of milkweed plants through extensive use of herbicides and loss of habitat is the main reason for the decline in the monarch’s population. In late summer and early fall adults will migrate back to their overwintering areas and not reproduce until the following spring, when the migration phase starts over again. Though caterpillars will only feed on milkweed, adult monarchs will feed on other nectar rich plants as well. Providing a source of milkweed and other nectar-rich flowering plants is one way we can all help to support monarch populations as well as attracting these and other beautiful, eye focusing butterflies to our landscape. Some examples of these plants that can be included into your landscape are Black-eyed Susan, Eastern Purple Cone- flower, Maximillian Sunflower and Ontario Blazing Star to name a few. These are all sun-loving plants and will work well here in Wisconsin. A more complete list of plants is available from the (NWF) National Wildlife Federation’s website www.nwf.org. One way that the City of Waukesha is helping this effort is Mayor Shawn Reilly, along with other cities, local governments and communities throughout the country, have entered into the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge. Through the efforts of the Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department’s Conservation Committee and volunteers, we will be implementing various actions to maintain and create favorable habitat as well as educating our citizens on how they can make a difference within our community. The four steps to the pledge are (1) taking the pledge, (2) specifying specific actions we will be taking, (3) taking those actions, and (4) reporting our progress to the NWF. This is a twelve-month pledge and can lead to special recognition within the NWF’s Mayors’ Monarch Leadership Circle as well as increasing the number of monarch butterflies seen within our own community. Finally, a beautiful, interesing insect that we want to see more of within our community rather than a pest that we want to eradicate such as the emerald ash borer, Japanese beetle of the pesty box elder bug. But that’s another story.

I hope this information was not only informative, but helps you to get excited and motivated not only for stewardship of your landscape but our community and nation’s as well. - Dave Rauterberg, City Forester For more information about the monarch butterfly please visit the following web sites: www.nwf.org / https://xerces.org Feature Photo by Annette Wilkinson

TRADITIONAL PLAYGROUNDS

Bring on Outside Play! Playground Program / Traditional Drop-Off/In Sites Ages 7-12 years (must be 7 by 6/8/18) Calling all kids! Do you love to be outside in the summertime? Do you love to hang out with friends, play games and NEVER worry about boredom?! Then this is the program for you!! Our playground leaders love to have fun and engage participants through playground activities, new and old. Activities will include sports, games, arts and crafts, nature, and of course, Knock Hockey! We’ve got a little something for everyone! This program is designed to provide “drop-in” activities for children (if you are looking for childcare we would suggest the Cool School Summer Explorers program on page 20) • At this playground program, attendance is neither mandatory nor enforced - leaders will supervise activities and encourage your child to participate, however, they will not prevent your child from leaving supervised activities if your child desires to do so. • We ask all parents to discuss with their child when they may leave the playground and their behavior while attending playgrounds. • We also ask parents to encourage their children to participate in supervised activities within the park to ensure maximum safety. • Regular activities at each site will not be provided on Fridays. Special Friday Events will be offered at different locations throughout the summer. Transportation will not be provided. Rain Policy for traditional playgrounds: If we see lightning, hear thunder, experience heavy rain/wind in the area, the park program will close and children will be asked to leave the area for a minimum of 30 minutes. If the storm continues, the park will remain closed the rest of the day. Please call the information line (262-522-9356) in the event of inclement weather to obtain the most current information. You may want to discuss alternate options with your children in the event of severe weather. *RIVERS CROSSING and SARATOGA PARK: due to expanded shelter, program will not cancel in event of inclement weather. Programs for Children & Families

Children age 3 years through those finishing 6th grade From June 1 – August 4, kids who participate in the Summer Reading Club read books & win prizes. Not only is it fun and a great excuse to visit the library, but participation in the program keeps kids reading—and learning—all summer long.

Under the age of 3 years It’s never too early to start reading to your child! Parents can learn early literacy techniques and little ones can earn a book. This reading club is designed for children age birth to 35 months and their parents.

The Waukesha Public Library’s Summer Reading Club is dedicated to motivating children to read. Our goal is to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. While some children may be motivated by the incentives, we hope that most of the joy will come from the satisfaction of reaching a personal goal, parental enthusiasm and the sheer pleasure of reading.

Many of the programs offered at the library are made possible through the generous support of the Friends of Waukesha Public Library. Friends receive funds through membership dues, merchandise sales and donations. If you are interested in joining the Friends, please ask at one of the desks for information or on the library’s website.

HOW TO REGISTER: Online – Go to the library’s event calendar, www.waukeshapubliclibrary.org and click on the day of the event OR at the library OR call 262-524-3692.
