Welcome to the beautiful season of autumn! We have many events and activities to look forward to as summer wraps up and we settle into fall.

The City will be offering our 2nd annual Neighborhood Beer Gardens later this month. Thursday, August 23-Saturday, August 25, the Beer Garden will be in beautiful Rivers Crossing Park. Thursday, September 6-Saturday, September 8, it will be in Merrill Crest Park. These will lead up to our 3rd Annual Waukesha Oktoberfest in Frame Park, Friday & Saturday, September 21-22. Music, dancing, food, and fun for the entire family will fill Frame Park. Sign up for the new Bags Tourney this year (See page 23). And before I forget, we’ll wrap up the Tribute Tuesday season with a tribute to ZZ Top on Tuesday, September 11 in Cutler Park. We will also pay tribute to our first responders and veterans at the concert. Right around the corner is Halloween. Trick-or-Treat will take place on October 31 from 5:00-7:00 pm in Waukesha. Bring the younger children to Howl-O-Ween on Friday, October 12 taking place at Retzer Nature Center. It’s a great time for children, 10 and under, to enjoy an “un-haunted” Halloween with crafts, hikes, games, and a dance. And don’t forget our Veteran’s celebration . . . Operation Honor: A Salute to Veterans returns Saturday, November 10, 4:30 pm at Schuetze Recreation Center. Honor the men and women that have sacrificed for our country with music, food and tributes to all service divisions. Hope you and your family find time to collect many fall memories . . . and to be active!

Four of the City’s poll locations are being moved to address school security concerns and accessibility issues at our poll sites. Voters impacted by this change received a postcard in the mail. Changes will be in effect for the 8/14/18 Partisan Primary Election and forward as follows: •

BRANCHING OUT

So, who watched the 4th of July parade here in Waukesha? Did you see our forestry bucket truck as well as our chipper truck with chipper? What was the log out the back of the chipper with the Emerald Ash Borer Sign #1,128 all about? Well, this July marks the middle of our 5-year Emerald Ash Borer Management Program which is meant to maintain a healthy population of ash trees within the city of Waukesha. This 5-year management approach includes injecting (and therefore protecting) 3,500 ash trees while removing the remaining unprotected ash trees within a 5-year period. Number 1,128 marks the halfway point of removing all the city’s unprotected ash trees which started at over 2,200. So, a lot of work has been done by the forestry crew but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. With all this time spent removing ash trees I’m sure many of you have been noticing the effects of all this work. First, you may have noticed standing trunks around the city. This is a result of removing larger trees in a two-step process by removing the top (topping) of the tree when only the branches are small enough to be chipped by our chipper. The large trunk will remain standing for another time and requires a different set of equipment. Second, you may have noticed a lot of stumps in the terrace area and in the parks. Because this also requires another set of equipment, this too will be done in another process at another time. It is just more efficient to keep the crews moving rather than going back and forth to the shop to get different equipment. The third is the loss of tree canopy. This is very noticeable on streets that are predominantly ash. Fortunately, most of these full streets of ash have been protected from the borer.

However, even streets that have been planted with at least one other species of tree, can show a significant void in the tree canopy when the ash are removed. Sometimes we take these trees for granted until they are lost forever. With all this time spent on managing our ash trees, what else has the forestry crew been up to? Well, this spring we planted 356 trees, many of which were the result of removing ash trees the previous year. We had a couple Arbor Day celebrations in the parks which marked our 39th year as a Tree City USA. So, watch out for next year as our 40th comes around. We don’t get out to do our scheduled pruning like we would like, therefore, “service requests” are on the increase and we are busy attending to those. As I’m writing this article, Japanese beetles are attacking our newly planted elm and linden trees. We are treating those trees to prevent defoliation. A dry spell this July has initiated another round of watering of our newly planted trees so don’t forget about your own trees in your landscape. Both an early and late fall watering, if we haven’t been getting adequate moisture, will be very good for plants heading into the dormant season. So that in a nutshell is what the forestry crew has been up to. I hope this sheds a little light on the how and why of what we do. If you have an ash tree I hope you have a plan on what to do with it because the emerald ash borer is here to stay. See you again in the spring. Dave Rauterberg, City Forester

READING WITHOUT WALLS CHALLENGE

“Reading is a fantastic way to open your minds and hearts to new people, places, and ideas. I’ve met new friends, learned new facts, and become a better person.”

–GENE LUEN YANG, former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature

Following Yang’s philosophy, we invite you to take the “Reading Without Walls challenge!” 1. Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you. 2. Read a book about a topic you don’t know much about. 3. Read a book in a format that you don’t normally read for fun — a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, or an audio book.

READING WITHOUT WALLS Kick-Off Event

September 8, 10:00 a.m.-noon. Register for this simple, but rewarding reading challenge! Enjoy scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, and comic book making. Each time you complete the three challenges listed above, your name will be entered into a monthly prize drawing starting October 1 thru May 2019.

Pickleball Classes WPRF Pickleball classes have grown immensely since they started in 2011. We have approximately 200 players of all ages and abilities playing this great game. The fall classes are designed to allow people with similar abilities to play together, with consideration towards wait times and number of people registered. See you on the courts! Pickleball – Social The name is funny but the sport is full of action. Pickleball is a blend of tennis and ping pong played on a badmintonsize court. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, especially in Senior Communities. Pickleball provides plenty of exercise and eye-hand coordination. This class is structured for players who have learned the game and are looking to improve their skills while having fun. Players should be working towards consistency in serving, returning serves, and sustaining a rally of volley and ground shots. This play is considered “Social Play”, while providing a competitive edge. Players will continue to rotate on and off the courts during sessions. Tennis shoes are required, eye protection is encouraged. AGE 16+

FREE Memory Screen Are you concerned about your memory? It is important, as we get older, to recognize the changes we may experience, especially in relation to our memory. A cognitive screen/ memory screen is defined as a wellness tool that helps identify possible changes in memory and cognition. It creates a baseline of where a person is at so that future changes can be monitored. This is not a diagnostic tool, but a screen that can provide early detection for dementia. The memory screen process is very simple in which you will be asked to answer some questions and complete a task. The screen takes about 15-30 minutes. Early detection is important because: It allows persons with dementia to prioritize and to be proactive in planning for their futures; Current treatments are more effective in earlier stages of Alzheimer’s Disease; There is greater opportunity to educate caregivers; It may improve quality of life for persons with dementia and their families and may help to control long term care costs.
