NEW REGISTRATION SOFTWARE
WPRF is Getting ACTIVE!
The City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation & Forestry Dept. (WPRF) will be implementing a new registration system software this fall from ACTIVE! We are very excited about the new ways that the software will impact our ability to provide excellent customer service. However, as with anything new, there will be some challenges as outlined below: • Customer Accounts: We are planning on importing account information (including payment and registration/reservation histories) into the new software. Please make sure that your address and contact information is up to date • Online Registration: The online registration in the old system is scheduled to stop at 4:30 pm on Sunday, October 10, 2021. The new system will offer online registration starting at midnight on Monday, October 11, 2021. Our plan is to have a seamless transfer of online login information and associated passwords. However, if the information transfer does not go as planned, we may need to change how your information is accessed. We will be in touch when we know more! • Before/Afterschool Payment Plans: For those using the payment plan and payment accounts, the registration itself will transfer over, however, the payment account (credit card) information will not. Payment account information will need to be re-submitted once the software is in place. WPRF will be contacting you by email and/or phone to inform you of the transition date and to request that your payment information be re-entered either through the new online system or by phone. Please note the following scheduled payments:
Month Covered October November
Payment Due Date 9/20/21 10/20/21
Registration System Current System New System
As the software gets implemented, there may be additional payment account options available. We will inform you when they become available. As with all technology implementations, there may be unforeseen impacts. We will do our best to keep you informed and to ensure as seamless a transition as possible.

BRANCHING OUT
Frequently Asked
Pruning Questions Who is responsible for maintaining the trees between the sidewalk and curb (street trees)?
Waukesha Parks, Recreation & Forestry Dept. (WPRF) is responsible for maintaining/pruning the trees that grow between the sidewalk and the road. These are commonly referred to as street trees. The street trees are owned by the City of Waukesha. How many street trees does the City of Waukesha maintain?
WPRF’s Forestry Division and its 8 full-time staff, currently maintains approximately 25,000 street trees. The Forestry Division is also responsible for maintaining an additional 5,000 trees growing on managed park land. As a historical comparison, 5,000 trees were managed 40 years ago with 9 full-time staff. Who do I contact if I have a concern about the street tree in front of my house?
If you are concerned about a city street tree, please contact WPRF at 262-524-3737. A trained arborist will evaluate the tree and determine what work may be needed. When are my trees going to be pruned? Mature Trees: keeping up with the pruning needs of mature
trees has become an increased challenge over the last 10 years, beginning with the loss of the American Elm from Dutch Elm Disease in the late 1960’s. Also, a large number of trees were planted due to increased development and addition of new subdivisions in the 70’s and 80’s. These now mature trees make up a larger portion of the tree population. Gypsy Moth infestations came in the late 80’s and 90’s and most recently, has been the devastating Emerald Ash Borer resulting in over 3,000 trees removed and 6,500 trees impacted by this insect. Formerly, all the trees in an entire neighborhood were pruned at one time on a six year cycle. Now, forestry crews prune “Full Streets” on a priority basis. Although pruning entire neighborhoods is still preferred from an efficiency standpoint, crews prune based on an established set of priorities. Large deadwood and low hanging branches top the list. Severe weather events and the continued expansion of city limits also influence those decisions. Young Trees: Newly planted trees are in a training pruning
program and are pruned on years two, four, and six. Training pruning allows trees to develop proper form and structure. This increases tree value and reduces future maintenance issues. The Forestry Division implemented training pruning in 1988. May I prune the city trees in front of my house?
Street trees should not be pruned by homeowners. Street tree pruning can be dangerous. Serious public safety, liability and tree health issues can be created if trees are pruned by other than trained, qualified personnel. We appreciate your intentions, but please let us do the work.
4
How do you decide what to prune?
The goals of pruning are twofold. The first is to achieve proper clearance for traffic, visibility and pedestrians. The second is to achieve proper form and structure to promote tree health and vigor. Good structure not only reduces maintenance issues, but also improves a tree’s ability to resist storm damage. Branches with poor points of attachment, weak crotches or that compete or rub are typically removed. Limbs that are dead, dying, damaged or obstruct visibility are also removed at this time to preserve public safety. Pruning for tree health basically involves the removal of tree material that may be infected by disease or infested by insects. In order to maintain proper energy relations with the tree, care must be taken to avoid the removal of too many limbs. Why did my tree get pruned so high?
Street trees are pruned to provide clearance for snowplows, garbage trucks and other large service vehicles. Proper clearance reduces damage to trees and reduces the number of service calls requested. In addition, the sidewalk side of the tree is raised to provide adequate clearance for pedestrians. Trees are raised and pruned in accordance with accepted industry standards for street tree maintenance. Remember, healthy community trees benefit everyone!
• Improved air quality • Reduction of the “urban heat island” effect • Reduces storm water runoff • Noise abatement • Improved mental health • Reduced heating/cooling energy bills
• Aesthetically enhanced landscapes and increased property values For more information on the benefits of urban trees, visit the International Society of Arboriculture web site: www.treesaregood. com

On the Road Trips
Jesus Christ Superstar is an iconic musical phenomenon with a world-wide fan base. In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, a new mesmerizing production comes to North America. Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) and award winning choreographer Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom), this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring. Featuring award-winning music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar. Our seats for this performance are in the rear orchestra section in Uihlein Hall at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, Milwaukee. **Masks are required in the Theater at this time – this is subject to change. City of Waukesha Clean Water Plant Tour
The City of Waukesha municipal wastewater treatment facility processes an average of 9-10 million gallons per day. Flow arrives at the plant through a network of 270 miles of underground pipe. There has been a continuously operating treatment plant at this site since the late 1890s with numerous upgrades taking place over the years. The City of Waukesha has some of the highest quality effluent (discharged waste) in the state. On a guided tour, visitors will see the primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment of the liquid waste. Additionally, guests will see the treatment of the solids removed from each of these steps, and the ultimate biosolids end-product which is land-applied to farm fields for valuable nutrient recycling. The facility is currently under construction for the next round of improvements, which include tertiary treatment upgrades to meet a lower phosphorus limit, and the return flow pumping of Lake Michigan water, so some areas of the facility may not be accessible. Formal Gardens Tour
Welcome to Waukesha’s botanical urban gem, the Formal Gardens at Frame Park. The park was dedicated on October 25, 1939, in honor of Andrew J. and Emma R. Frame who in 1928 donated land and funds to the City of Waukesha. In total thirty-five acres of land, including the two acres of the Formal Gardens, had been donated to or purchased by the City of Waukesha park system. Over the years, the Gardens have had minor changes from the original design. Rose beds have always been a significant attraction in the gardens. The most significant change was the removal of the “fishpond” water feature located along the pergola in the sunken Gardens area. The fish head waterspouts are still visible on the limestone wall. The Formal Gardens consist of ever-changing annual flower beds, colorful perennial areas and fragrant rose beds. Guests can discover how and why certain species of plants and flowers are used in the Formal Gardens from one of the horticulturalists who maintains them. Visitors should come prepared with questions and should not forget to stop and smell the roses. AGE

Outdoor Hobo Springs Watercolor Crayon Drawing Class
Hobo Springs is one of the oldest features in Frame Park. This small spring was named for “hobos” who camped around it before it was improved in the late 19th Century. There was a second spring in Frame Park called Orchard Spring, located near the current Formal Gardens. A century ago, Waukesha was known as “Spring City” because of its many springs. Several of the city parks have features or “treasures” relating back to the Springs era. Participants have a unique opportunity to create a watercolor crayon drawing of the Frame Park Hobo Spring. Beginner level instruction will be led by a volunteer instructor with years of experience in working and helping others with water media. Pre-registration is required. AGE

“I am a single mother. I must be at work while my son must be in school. This program gives the flexibility to work my full-time schedule. The financial assistance helps me a lot. I must pay a small amount that fits my budget. Both my son and I are happy that we were able to be a part of this program due to the help given.” ~Maria E.

Pickleball Drills & Skills Workouts for Equally Skilled Partners
Pickleball for Beginners
Most everyone agrees you can’t improve playing a game by just playing the game. If you are an experienced competitive player, come improve your pickleball skills with multiple workouts of repetitive drills. With minimal instruction and demonstration, the basic shots of the game will be practiced multiple times in various drills. The shots we will cover include serves, return-of-serves (drives), dinks, drop shots, volleys/blocks/smashes, and “surprise” lobs. At the end of each session, time will be given to play a game applying what’s been drilled. To get optimum benefit from these drills, come with an equally-skilled, competitive partner. Wear good indoor court shoes and comfortable sport-clothing. Eye protection is recommended, but optional. Helpful resources will be emailed to registered students.
Come have fun, get some exercise, and learn the fastest growing sport in America for all ages and abilities – PICKLEBALL – a great game with a strange name. This class is intended for first time pickleball players or beginning players who have not had formal pickleball instruction. Learn with a friend or come alone and be paired with a class partner. You will learn the FUNdamentals of hitting the ball for the basic shots in the sequence of a game. We will also cover the basic rules and etiquette of pickleball. You will become comfortable keeping score and moving on the court playing doubles. Time will be given to play games to apply what’s been taught. Paddles and balls will be provided. Wear good indoor court shoes and comfortable sport clothing. Eye protection is recommended but optional. Helpful resources will be e-mailed to registered students.

A Christmas Carol – The Musical The Palace Theater, WI Dells
A CHRISTMAS CAROL – The Musical: A Holiday classic brought to life on stage with musical numbers and great story telling. Ebenezer Scrooge is a prosperous curmudgeon who believes wealth is far more valuable than the happiness and comfort of others. With an infuriated “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge sums up his feelings of Christmas tidings and the idea of charity. He’s forced to face his selfish ways when three unique ghosts on Christmas Eve lead him through his Past, Present, & Future. Thanks to this magical journey through time, Scrooge experiences a transformation like no other. Recognizing the error of his ways, he greets Christmas morning with a cheerful “Happy Christmas” before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those that mean the most to him. A Christmas Carol is a spectacular adaptation of Charles Dickens’s most well-known story. Musical numbers include: Sing We Now of Christmas, Deck the Halls, God Rest You Merry, Gentleman and many more! The featured menu includes: Super salad, baked bread, entrée, dessert, and coffee. **Masks are NOT required in the Theater at this time – this is subject to change. AGE DAY
