Whether it’s to improve your health and fitness, learn a new skill, or spend more time with family and friends, our Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has something for you!

We have a wide array of sports and fitness programs available for the young to the young at heart. These programs are a great way for the whole family to stay connected and to keep moving on those cold winter days. Now is a great time to learn something new! Sign up for beginner pickleball, a dance class, or perhaps sharpen your skills in a cooking class. We have a diverse selection of classes available no matter what your skill or ability level may be.

If you are looking for more opportunities to create some lasting family memories… why not give JanBoree a try. This year’s theme is Call of the Wild and there will be plenty of opportunity for adventure as we celebrate from January 13-22. Explore the Lowell Survival Camp at the opening ceremonies on January 13 and stay for the Wild, Wild Sky Fireworks display. New this year, the Aurora Borealis Laser Light Show will light up the sky at Lowell Park on Saturday, January 14. Visit JanBoree.org for a full list of JanBoree events. In March, once the snow has melted, bring your family out to the “Too Many Carrots” Family Adventure Walk. Explore educational stations along the path in Frame Park that support the themes of this year’s featured book. Don’t let the winter chill stop you from enjoying the flurry of activities that Waukesha has to offer! Grab your sled, ice skates and snowshoes… winter has begun. See you at the park!

Arborist (and Other) Help Wanted

The City of Waukesha, like many employers nationwide, has seen a decrease in applicants for many of our job openings. Changes in demographics, expectations and long-term goals may be impacting today’s workforce. However, the fact remains that Waukesha will always have a need for hard working and dedicated Arborists and other employees in the Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department (WPRF) and other City departments. Seasonal workers and interns are also needed to help accomplish the many great services that our various divisions provide year-round.

An Arborist is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “ a person whose job is to take care of trees and make sure that they are healthy and safe…”. With the City of Waukesha, an Arborist plants, prunes, treats to control insects and diseases, repairs and removes trees in the City Right-of-Way (Street Trees), trees in City Parks and on other City property. Occasionally, an Arborist with the City responds to storm damage to City trees and private trees that impact the Rightof-Way (generally City sidewalks and the roadways).

An Arborist’s duties are performed using a variety of tools and equipment, ranging from handsaws and pruners to large trucks, brush chippers, stump grinders and front-end loaders. Here in Waukesha, each Arborist can operate all the equipment necessary to maintain the City’s 27,000+ managed trees. Additionally, Arborists assist with snow removal for both the Public Works Department and the Grounds Division of WPRF. They also assist with Special Event set up. Working as an Arborist is an interesting and fulfilling career. The road to becoming a municipal Arborist begins with one of two general directions, first with schooling, either at a four year university or a two year technical college. The second route is by gaining field experience with a private tree care firm or a utility line clearance company. Historically, the City has hired Arborists from a variety of backgrounds.

Some work performed by an Arborist can be done by an individual. However, most of the work is accomplished by a team, or crew, consisting of two to six people. Working as a crew to obtain a mutual goal adds to the sense of accomplishment at the end of a day or project. In 2021, the Forestry Division responded to 1,214 Service Requests, planted 644 trees, removed 665 trees, pruned 2,524 mature trees and 1,697 immature trees, removed 646 stumps, treated 705 Ash trees to prevent Emerald Ash Borer and 16 American Elms to prevent Dutch Elm Disease. All of this was accomplished with just seven Arborists!

Anyone looking for an interesting, rewarding and secure job should consider becoming an Arborist and especially consider seeking employment with the two-time Gold Medal Award Winning City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. The City of Waukesha website routinely has job openings posted, and one may be the perfect fit for you.

April 19 – CATHERINE (CATHY) LABINSKI – Hospice Chaplain

Our guest has worn many and varied hats in her lifetime. Each has been very special to her, but one that is particularly significant is that of hospice chaplain. In her book Gifts in Hospice she relates how the hospice program is not only beneficial to the patient’s family, but also, to the caregiver. A story filled with great dedication, compassion and love.
