Recycling in the Parks
With warmer weather, longer days and the sun shining, people are getting out to enjoy the parks. Parks are a wonderful resource for all to enjoy, but they also need help to keep them clean and beautiful. WPRF has a history of recycling: paper, batteries, scrap metal, oil, as well as chipping wood for mulch, and composting stump shavings to name a few. Knowing what to recycle can be confusing. What has been accepted for recycling has evolved over the years. Some things that are not accepted for recycling at home may still technically be recyclable if taken somewhere else.
WPRF has added permanent recycling containers to most of the parks and will continue to add recycling containers. However, we need the public’s help in ensuring the success of the recycling program. Looking for and properly using the trash and recycling containers is beneficial to all. A major problem facing the recycling industry across the country is contamination: trash and non-recyclables being put into recycling containers. When trash is put into recycling containers, the entire container is considered contaminated, and goes into a landfill with the other trash.
Here are some tips to know how to recycle not only in the parks, but also at home, work and school, knowing that you are supporting the recycling program rather than hindering and causing more trash.
• Recycle the classic, simple things—newspapers, cardboard, office paper, plastic water bottles and milk jugs, soup cans, aluminum cans, glass jars/ bottles and cartons (orange juice, soy milk, etc.). These items are universal to good recycling. All the recycling containers in our parks are comingled, which means all recyclables can go in the container together, no need to separate.
• Don’t try to recycle other random plastic, glass and metal things just because they are plastic, glass, or metal. No toys, no glass from old windows, no helium or propane tanks or tools or car parts. Stick to the classic basics listed above. Some of these other items may technically be recyclable, but not in your household, work, or school recycle bins.
Items that are NOT to be put in comingled recycling containers include:
•Paper soiled by food or grease, like pizza boxes
•Waxed paper
•Light bulbs
•Styrofoam
•Plastics NOT coded as #1, #2, #5.
•Plastic utensils, paper plates and paper cups
•Hoses
•String lights, electrical cords and wire
•Motor oil and antifreeze bottles
• Some of these non-comingled items can be recycled at drop-off sites. Check the City’s website for where and how different items can be recycled: waukesha-wi.gov/residents/collections/index.php
• Always pour liquids out of bottles, jugs, cans and cartons and rinse food remnants from jars and other containers. If you try to recycle a bottle with liquids still inside, it’s probably not going to get recycled, but sent to the landfilled instead. Put the plastic cap back on after emptying, as those are now recyclable too.
• Never put recyclables in plastic bags. Plastic bags have never been accepted in comingled or household recycling and are a major problem today. Simply place the above classic recyclables clean and loose into the recycle bin. Plastic bags are recyclable, and are accepted at most stores with bins near the entrances.
• Yard waste such as leaves and grass clippings are recyclable in their own way, and do not belong in the trash. Consider mulching the leaves and grass clippings instead of hauling to the drop-off site. The organic matter provides nitrogen for the soil. Excess amounts can be used for mulching other areas or composting to amend soil in your gardens or yard. For more information on composing and mulching, visit Waukesha County’s website: www.waukeshacounty.gov/composting/ or www.waukeshacounty.gov/landandparks/recycling/ yard-waste-and-compost/leaves/
• “When in doubt, throw it out” in the trash. This is better than “guess recycling” and ensures less contamination in the recycling containers. The key is
