Crisp, fall air might be right around the corner, but the fun, family activities continue! Make sure you and your family are signed up for fall fitness and recreation. There is truly something for every member of the family from pickleball, to dance, to Tae Kwon Do, to cookie decorating and so much more!
I encourage everyone to help us celebrate the Fox River and all it means to our area by participating in It’s Our Fox River Day events on Saturday, September 16, on page 22. You and your family can put on provided waders and explore life in the river behind the EB Shurts building or participate in a learn to kayak event at High Rollers in Frame Park. Registration is required for some of the events and is available at: Waukesha-wi.gov/specialevents.
We can also spend these final summer days together with neighbors and friends! Stop by one of our Neighborhood Beer Gardens at Rivers Crossing Park August 24-26 or Merrill Crest Park September 7-9, on page 21. And don’t forget about Oktoberfest on September 22-23, (back cover) where there is fun for the whole family. There is even a Das Bags Tourney and Bier Foam Fun Run to check out at Oktoberfest this year!
Whether you head to an event, sign up for a class, or just enjoy your local park, I hope you have a fantastic fall here in the City of Waukesha.

Community
NEW! Free Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Everyone in the community is welcome
A trauma informed approach to yoga makes practice safer and more accessible through intentional language and movement. A certified yoga therapist has received additional training around potential trauma triggers in certain demographics as compared to standard certification. When we live through traumatic experiences, as our community has done, it changes how we interact with the world. Our minds may adapt by reliving the past, disconnecting from our bodies, or becoming hyper alert of what might happen in the future. As adaptations help us survive traumatic experiences, they can make it hard to live in the present and feel like we’re in control of our lives. In this class, participants will be guided through gentle moving yoga poses that will help you strengthen your body, be mindful of your breath and help build energy.
Everyone welcome – most people experience or will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives. Participants welcome to participate in a chair or mat (please bring your own) as modifications will be made.
Ballroom Basics for Balance™
Challenge and improve your balance with basic moves of ballroom dance! A different dance will be introduced each week. Dances include Waltz, Merengue, Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Fox Trot, and Tango. This class is ideal for all participants (those who have a fear of falls, those who want to improve balance/safety mobility or those who feel that have good balance but simply want to learn to dance and learn preventative balance skills through dance movement). On 9/12 and 10/17, participants will complete pre and post balance testing after class.
No experience or partner needed! Dances will be taught in line formation with options to dance with a partner.

Return of the Spongy Moth
The moth formerly known as Gypsy Moth is now referred to as the Spongy Moth because its egg mass looks like a sponge. Since the late 1990’s, Waukesha has been dealing with this tree defoliating insect. Spongy Moth populations increased in the City of Waukesha and Waukesha County to the point that the DNR was trying to control it through aerial spraying of biological controls including Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki, a naturally occurring soil bacteria.
In the more recent past, the insect has become more endemic, meaning it is still here, but in numbers that don’t cause severe damage. The DNR no longer has a “control the spread treatment program” for the moth. Occasional outbreaks occurred in small pockets throughout Wisconsin, but in the southeast part of the state, they have been relatively quiet. This is beginning to change again.
Moth Caterpillar
The Spongy Moth starts as an egg and hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar stage is where it does damage. The insect eats more as it gets bigger. After it has done damage, it will pupate. After it has completed its pupation, you may see the moths flying and looking to mate and lay eggs. The Spongy Moth will feed on tree leaves of many different trees and in large numbers can completely defoliate mature trees.
If you would like to get help controlling the Spongy Moth, you can use the Wisconsin Arborist Association’s find an arborist page found here: waa-isa.org/find-certified-arborist/
Female and male Spongy Moths
Some of the biological controls that have kept the moth at bay for many years become less effective when the weather is dry during the caterpillar portion of its life cycle. Last year, and continuing into this year, we have had relatively dry springs and summers. This has allowed the population to explode. You can still try and control the insect on your property by destroying the caterpillars before they lay their spongy egg masses, as well as destroying the egg masses which prevents hundreds of the caterpillars from damaging your plants next year.
Information about the spongy moth can be found on the WI DNR website at: dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/foresthealth/spongymoth

“Pick Your Own Memories”
Apple Holler and O&H Danish Bakery
There is something wonderfully special - almost magicalabout “old” high school friends, returning to their small hometown in rural Wisconsin to celebrate a wedding!
Your Ag-Venture will combine childhood wonder with the refreshing simplicity of living in the moment. This unique adventure may reshape how you view life on the farm and orchard. We will experience:
•Touring Apple Holler’s beautiful 78 acres of family farm, apple, peach and pear orchards and enchanted forest on a tractor- drawn ride;
•Picking ¼ peck of apples and learning about earth-friendly growing practices;
•Visiting the golden goat bridge and feeding the goats;
•Enjoying lunch - a turkey gobbler sandwich, pickle spear, chips, potato salad, strawberry applesauce and beverage complete with homemade, high top, hot apple pie and ice cream.
Time will be allowed to shop at the old-fashion country store, bakery, and gift shop. Your adventure does not end there. We will travel to the O&H Danish Bakery for a Kringle presentation and opportunity to celebrate like a Dane. “Hygge” (creating a nice, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life). Since 1949 the Olsen Family has been faithfully committed to baking quality Kringle and other delicious pastries, using methods and passion passed down through generations in small town Racine.
On our bus ride you will receive a copy and enjoy a discussion of Shotgun Lovesongs a rare work of fiction set in Wisconsin that explores friendship and the ties that bind us to home. A truly remarkable book—a novel that once read will never be forgotten.
Join us for this merry, sparkling, tuneful, boisterous Broadway musical version of the world’s most beloved Christmas story –Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Based on the popular musical movie starring Albert Finney, SCROOGE THE MUSICAL tells this time-honored tale of redemption and love as only The Fireside can – with a beautiful and rousing musical score (including the well-known “Thank You Very Much”), breathtaking dancing, beautiful period costumes, uproarious comedy, and heart-warming drama.
