South Africa. Images of sweeping savannahs, wildebeests, elephants and giraffes, lions lurking in the underbrush, a country of conflict and contrasts.

Springbok Rugby teams and fierce but friendly rivalry between our nations over decades and many other images, all spring to mind. What doesn’t immediately spring to mind is a country that produces world class boats, from superyachts to everyday recreational vessels as well as commercial and military craft. So it was with eager anticipation that veteran marine personality, Ron Czerniak, recently had the good fortune to get out on the Hauraki Gulf to test the Searaider 6.6 RIB, built by Stingray Marine who are located on the outskirts of Cape Town.

T

he Searaider 6.6 deep-vee RIB is built in South Africa by Stingray Marine and imported into NZ by Venom Boats NZ, headed up by Anna Leech and Paul Powney. This RIB stands out in a crowded inflatable boat market despite its close cousin, the 6.4 m catamaran hull version RIB, being a serious rival.

Trying to fit in a boat test day during Auckland’s winter is always a challenge. Still, a weather window presented itself in early June. It was off to the Gulf Harbour boat ramp at the tip of Whangaparaoa Peninsula to launch and test out this interesting African import.

Anna Leech and Greg Sowden met me, and while we waited for Doug Dukeson to show up for the photography session,

I had the chance to talk with Anna and Greg about the Searaider 6.6 monohull and learn a bit of the history behind the company manufacturing them in South Africa. How Anna and Paul came to set up Venom Boats NZ Ltd. Anna bought the distribution for Takacat Australia, Asia and the Middle East from Greg in January 2021. Paul also purchased the distribution rights for Takacat NZ and the Pacific around the same time. The decision was made to market the Predator Catamaran RIBs under the Takacat brand, extending their current catamaran range and setting up a new company to sell the monohull Searaider RIBs. The Stingray Searaider monohull RIBs will be sold under Venom Boats NZ Ltd and available in New Zealand, the Pacific, Asia and the Middle East through Venom Boats NZ Ltd.

CREDIBLE HISTORY

Stingray Marine (SA) has an impressive and credible history dating back to 1990, manufacturing fast patrol boats, workboats/landing craft, drysuits, commercial vehicle canopies for utes, and inflatable and rigid hull inflatable boats. Any company that successfully supplies vessels to the military and commercial sectors of the marine industry immediately gets my attention! These customers demand and expect the best, and if you don’t consistently supply what they require to meet the demands they envision, forget about trying to stay in the inflatable boat business.

Suffice it to say that Stingray Marine is one of the largest manufacturers of inflatable and RIB boats in the Southern Hemisphere, exporting as far afield as Europe, Australasia, North and South America, Asia, Africa and now New Zealand.

Having done some prior research about Stingray boats and having been one of the judges at the recent Hutchwilco Boat Show this year, who evaluated the sister vessel, Takacat T640P Catamaran RIB, nominated at the show for the most innovative boat award, and came second equal, my expectations prior to the actual on the water test, were relatively high. Would the Searaider 6.6 live up to expectations?

Spoiler alert! Yes! And as they say in New York, “Let me tell ya why”.

QUALITY HYPALON

Inflatable boats are generally constructed of two primary materials.

Hypalon or Panatex (PVC). Without a doubt, Hypalon is the superior material. However, it is also more expensive. But, as the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for”.

So, the fact that the Searaider 6.6 is constructed with Hypalon is an immediate plus.

When Doug arrived at the boat ramp, he took photos of the boat alongside the dock. I have come to realise that when you look over the shoulder of someone else doing the photography, you subconsciously look at the boat in more detail and with a more critical eye, often noticing things that you might otherwise miss.

Even as a casual observer, you cannot miss the construction quality.

Everything is of an extremely high standard, from the inflatable tube work to the fibreglass hull, interior deck and the seat fittings to the small but essential features such as the anchor rope jam cleat bow.

The Searaider 6.6 is carried on a single-axle Hosking trailer. With the large volume, fully inflated wrap-around tubes (divided into six separate compartments for safety), it complies with trailer towing road rules and with a more than ample and cleanly laid out deck space, it looks much more significant than its 6.6m length would suggest. Nonetheless, it weighs less than 750 kg on the trailer, so it’s easy enough to tow.

The top speed is around 53 knots.

The seating layout was chosen to leave plenty of clear deck space down the vessel’s centreline for easy access to the low transom Plenty of seating and yet still plenty of workable space.

The bow section dissipates the water providing a dry boat, with barely any spray coming over the bow or tubes.

FEATURES PLUS

One notable feature often commented upon is the fore and aft side seats, located on either side aft. They have a reversible backrest allowing passengers to sit facing inwards or outwards.

Each seat easily accommodates three adults, while the narrow helm console’s motorcycle-style straddle seat fits another two.

The boat is factory rated for up to 12 passengers.

The seating layout was chosen to leave plenty of clear deck space down the vessel’s centreline for easy access to the low transom – great for scuba diving or commercial applications such as ferrying resort guests. Engine cabling, hydraulic, and fuel lines restrict transom access somewhat. Still, in discussion with Anna, it was agreed that a full-width transom locker would tidy things up despite perhaps somewhat limiting transom access. The underdeck 90-litre fuel tank further contributes to the clean and uncluttered interior of the vessel.

During the sea trials off Gulf Harbour, I was particularly impressed with the helm seat/console design and layout. Simple, ergonomically thought out, comfortable and secure were all words that came to mind as I thrashed the boat through tight turns and over our self-created wake waves. The driving sensation is akin to controlling a jet ski at high speeds – albeit one helluva a big jet ski!

Even though we had reasonably calm seas the day of the test, I asked Greg how hard I could push the Searaider? As he and Anna braced themselves, his calm response was, “Go for it”. So I did!

At pretty much full throttle (and this vessel is capable of up to 53 knots in the right conditions), I spun the wheel as sharp as possible, hoping like hell that I wasn’t going to throw the boat

into an uncontrollable manoeuvre ending up with all of us in the drink. However, not the case. With my hands firmly on the wheel and my legs gripping the saddle-like helm seat as though I was on one of those bar room mechanical bucking broncos, the RIB spun in a tight arc revolving through a 360 deg turn as though the stern was tethered to a fixed mooring post. Repeating this sort of manoeuvre several times after bouncing off our wake, I was pleasantly surprised to discover how dry the boat was, with barely a hint of spray coming over the bow or tubes. Examining the hull with more scrutiny when loaded back onto its trailer after the test helped explain why the boat is so dry.

Venom Boats offer the Searaider in various colours, layouts, engine and equipment options, including different seating and console arrangements. So you can kit out the bareboat with just about anything you want. As the boat already incorporates fittings for a Bimini top and the helm console has ample room for an array of instruments, you can add a lot of extras for a modest investment. Searaider comes in multiple sizes starting from 4.5m (5 passengers) right up to 9.5m which can hold a massive 20 passengers. Perfect for commercial, dive and resort use.

As a lifelong scuba diver and dive instructor, I could not help but evaluate this vessel for use as a dive boat. At the same time, it was difficult not to compare this craft with the Takacat Predator T640 catamaran RIB, which I had examined in detail at the Hutchwilco Boat Show. Suffice it to say, I would not be unhappy with owning either of these vessels. Still, for the extra (apples to apples comparison) $10,000.00, I would put the Predator ahead of the Searaider if the primary consideration was as a dive boat.

TICKS THE BOXES

If you are looking for an extremely rugged, quasi workboat cum recreational craft, then the Searaider 6.6 ticks many boxes. This vessel is built to take punishment and, with a price tag of approximately $80,000.00, represents excellent value, especially in terms of performance and handling. And, as Anna explained, customers can mix and match console and seating layouts, engines, equipment options and colours depending on their budget.

We look at some of the BIGGER RIBS on the market and why they are so popular both in the recreational and commercial markets.

It wasn’t so many years ago that if you wanted a RIB, then your choices were limited to tenders and there was very little offered over about 4m. However, that has all changed now and RIBs have got bigger, more sophisticated and certainly far better designed and set up. Seeing RIBs over 6m is commonplace and the number of new models seems to be growing every year.

In a previous issue of Pacific RIB, we looked at RIBs around 6-6.5m, of which there were over a dozen to pick from. This time, we thought we would explore what was available over 8m, both from local builders and international brands. Surprisingly there are quite built locally, such as Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders (Catalyst), Sealegs, Protector, JB Ribs, Southern Pacific, Explorer, Assault, and Smuggler and leading imports such as Brig, Highfield, Ocean Craft , Tiger, Zodiac, Ribco and Sacs.

RIB ADVANTAGES

No matter what size the RIB, they all come with much the same advantages, such as lightweight, (approximately 25% less than conventional boats of a similar size), stability at rest, natural fender protection when coming alongside another vessel and safety provided by the inflatable collars around the hull. The Hypalon tubes today are virtually resistant to low impact collision, with multiple separate chambers around the hull that negate the impact of any punctures caused by minor accidents.

And no, they won't sink if you puncture a tube, due to the multiple air chambers so that in the event of a puncture the whole boat will not go flat. Most will have at least three or as many as twelve independent air chambers, depending on the size of the boat.

Effectively what you have is a big inflatable lifejacket around the boat and even if you leave the bungs out and it fills with water, it can’t sink. Also, your outboard powerheads will still be out of the water and won’t get damaged.

Larger rigid inflatable boats have a variety of uses.

They can be used for recreational and leisure purposes, or they also serve a much more serious purpose as tenders, rescue and patrol boats. Globally they are the first choice for coastguards, military and customs.

While just about every RIB up to 6.5m is either open or side/centre console, when you get into the 8m plus category, the size is available to offer wheelhouse and cabin boats. One of the earliest exponents of this was Rayglass Protector, that today produce a wide range of cabin boats from 8.5m through to 13m. Cabin boats are now offered by many RIB manufacturers, with the majority based on 8m plus hulls.

Local Kiwi builder Smuggler Marine have taken the design to a new level, by offering a mid-cabin with a walk-around aspect, that certainly makes excellent use of the available space.

If you are talking about size, then they don’t come any bigger than the Catalyst range of catamaran RIBS from Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders. Available with custom layouts from 38ft to 53ft they are a powerhouse on water.

POWER PLUS

When it comes to power, big RIBs need plenty if you want them to perform. Anything over 8m usually has twin, triple or even four outboards or a pair of reasonable size diesel or petrol sterndrives. The new Mercury V12 600hp Verado is a popular choice on the really big RIBs, as are Yamaha 425s and Suzuki 350s.

Big RIBs are based on traditional deep vee hull designs and so in the main their ability in the rough water is exceptional. Given the size and the horsepower, and the fact they are favoured by a lot of Coastguards worldwide, you would expect that handling big seas is what a big RIB is all about. The tubes not only provide a natural ‘cushioning’ when punching across the rough water, they provide a greater than normal beam to the boat.

For example; an 8.5m RIB will carry a beam somewhere around 2.75m, whereas an 8.5m GRP deep vee will be closer to 2.5m. This is also a bonus when at rest, providing extra stability, - as the rear of the tubes rest on the water- so the RIB settles in the water and is not so susceptible to a rolling motion. At speed the rear of the tubes, again provide some extra stability as well as a softening effect in rougher water. The geometry of the tube design acts like an extra wide chine and deflects spray for a drier ride than that of a conventional chine on a deep vee monohull.

There is the benefit of much wider ‘coamings’ than on a GRP or alloy boat and also the coaming height is a lot lower, so closer to the water. This can be advantageous when fishing or boarding/disembarking the boat, but the low coamings may be of concern if you have small children aboard.

If you are thinking of buying a big RIB, then you better have somewhere to store it in mind. If you are going to keep it on a marina, then best you invest in a floating dock system of some kind to keep the hull and engines out of the water. If you can’t do this then you will need to antifoul the hull and engine lower units.

Dry stacks are very popular for RIB storage and have the necessary beam to allow you to leave the tubes inflated.

Even if you have room at home, the transporting of a RIB with an over-width beam can be an issue.

Big RIBs can look very cool, with crisp, modern designs and sharp colours and graphics that stand out against a crowd of traditional boats.

In the 8m plus category, there are over 20 brands that are readily available in New Zealand & Australia and over 60 models.

Designed and built as a high-performance catamaran chase boat for the Emirates Team New Zealand Americas Cup challenge, these have varied roles from AC chase boats to superyacht support tenders, resort water taxis and water sport vessels to coastal weekenders.

This is a very versatile platform with a wide range of customisations available. It is offered with either inboard or outboard power and full custom interior.

JOKER (ITALY) Joker Boats are synonymous of innovation, high quality and fine craftsmanship made in Italy. Top of the range is the 10.7m mid cabin Clubman 35 with twin outboard power. Other models over 8m are the Clubman 30, Clubman 28 and Clubman 26 c entre consoles.

HIGHFIELD (CHINA) One of the world’s largest RIB builders, Highfield offer three models over 8m. In the Sport range there is the SP800 and the SP900, both centre console models feature interiors that are based on fun and entertaining. DECK CRANE FITTING

YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT Laurie Cranfield reports on updating his Salthouse 16m, Rapport with a new ADC deck crane, and Seafarer RIB. We’ve enjoyed our 16 metre Salthouse SportFisher, Rapport, for well over two years now and after more than 200 nights aboard find her a capable and comfortable cruising vessel. But when you buy pre-owned you inevitably make some compromises and in our case there were three; flexible plastic flybridge clears rather than glass, all electric galley rather than lpg and an inadequate dinghy.

We decided to live with the first two, but we really enjoy exploring areas in proximity to our anchorages and ideally wanted a 3 metre rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) with a 15hp 4-stroke outboard, lifted aboard by a crane. Rapport came without a crane and with an old locally branded but Chinese-made inflatable that we literally rubbished after a few weeks as it had so many air leaks. It was December and we urgently needed a tender that two of us could easily lift onto our foredeck cradle, so bought a new lightweight (33kg) Aquapro SLR 2.6m rigid-hulled inflatable and Honda 2.5hp 4-stroke air cooled outboard. We’d used the same outboard during our Med cruising years and found it to be very reliable and easy to lift and start. But for Rapport this was always a temporary solution and so aided by our best friend and long time boating companion, Frank, we started researching deck cranes and larger inflatables.

We knew this was going to be an expensive project and that making improvements to a boat doesn’t necessarily add value. A trusted marine broker’s thoughts were that future potential buyers of Rapport would expect a vessel of this size to carry a substantial RHIB and crane, so adding these would improve her saleability and value. We didn’t need too much convincing and reassured by his advice and the prospect of lots more fun ahead decided to proceed.

Breaking the project down into four pieces we researched deck crane, RHIB, outboard and ancillary gear.

FINDING A SUITABLE CRANE The RHIB with its outboard, fuel and gear will weigh about 150kg so we need a 24V DC powered crane with a safe working load of at least that. We find plenty of options for large cranes but few for smaller units.

Australia’s Davco is a popular brand but its delivery time was quoted in excess of six months at that time.

Motor Yacht Service Centre (MYSC) are the New Zealand agent for Brisbanebased Australian Davits and Cranes (ADC) and we find them very helpful having fitted many ADCs with good results. MYSC’s owner Dean Ryder checks Rapport and quotes $13,973 plus installation for their 350kg capacity crane mounted on our starboard side with its standpipe passing down through our master berth’s wardrobe thus minimising interior disruption.

Oceanlift cranes are produced on a bespoke basis in Rotorua and we find owner Mark Thomson also provides lots of information, quoting $13,711 plus installation for his 200kg capacity crane.

Both units will suit us however the ADC’s additional capacity will provide an extra safety margin, more future flexibility and enhanced resale value. These factors combined with the fact that MYSC install their ADC cranes whereas we need a separate contractor to instal the Oceanlift lead us to choose ADC. We expect the installation to take around three days and to cost around $6-8,000.

WHICH RHIB WILL SUIT US BEST? We’re looking for a rugged rigid-hulled RHIB about 3 metres in length with room for four adults, able to plane with at least two adults aboard using a 15hp outboard, with generous beam for lateral stability, a snub bow rather than a pointed bow for greater internal space forward, a false flat deck for easier internal movement and to keep contents dry, a high bow to deflect spray, robust pontoons with three separate air compartments, paddles rather than oars and rowlocks, internal lifting points, rubbing strakes, self-draining bung, storage for anchor and accessories and handles on the pontoons and bow. We’ll also fit top-of-the-line Beachmaster pneumatic wheels and two rod holders. We have a preference for a powder coated alloy hull (being lighter and easier to repair), but will accept GRP all other things being equal.

We eliminate centre console options as in our view they take up too much room in a 3 metre RHIB and add too much weight, complexity and expense.

I’ve had good experiences with Aquapro and Frank has with Quicksilver, so we make a short list including these plus Southern Pacific and Zodiac. Initially we weren’t aware of AB and Seafarer brands and later add these to our list. All sellers we speak to are able to provide a complete package including outboard and are willing to negotiate a deal.

DECK CRANE FITTING (TPU), blends of polychloroprene (“Neoprene”) with chlorosulphonated polyethylene (“Hypalon”) and lastly straight TPU. In each case these materials are used to coat a polyester or polyamide (“nylon”) fabric substrate. Although there’s lots of debate about the pros and cons of each material due to different product qualities and variations in design, manufacture and quality control, the above list represents an ascending order of technical excellence. Also we’re aware of two successful New Zealand brands that encountered major problems after they switched production to China, eventually reverting to New Zealand manufacture, so won’t consider Chinese options.

Historically the Neoprene/Hypalon blend was considered the gold standard, but opinion has largely turned towards TPU taking that spot. In fact the US Navy conducted a study of pontoons in 2001 concluding “tubes constructed of TPU exhibit better key physical properties than tubes constructed of Hypalon ... better tensile strength, tearing strength, puncture resistance and abrasion resistance.” It also has superior air retention, chemical (ie fuel) resistance and seams can be welded whereas Hypalon can only be glued.

Despite the above Frank and I have both experienced good results previously with pvc pontoons and their life can be maximised by using a storage cover and fitting chaps to provide the pontoons with extra ultra-violet, abrasion and puncture resistance.

We’d been inclined towards Zodiac, their brand being

synonymous with RHIBs, but they only offered us RHIBs built in Indonesia with GRP hulls and pvc pontoons while availability appeared to be an issue. Of the imported brands we’re most impressed by AB, produced in Belgium with an alloy hull and using a Neoprene/Hypalon blend for tubes.

However wanting a few custom features added we visit local producer Seafarer Inflatables, based in Dairyflat north of Auckland where we’re immediately impressed by owner Neil Curtling’s enthusiasm and willingness to share his extensive knowledge based on 35 years in the industry. Seafarer use a unique hot air welding process and their product incorporates all of the features we’re looking for and more, such as Ultralon’s U-Dek decking providing a great cosmetic appearance, grip and underfoot feel. They also produce for another well-known brand as well as repairing all types of inflatables and can produce pontoons using either a PVC/ TPU blend, Hypalon or TPU. We’re also impressed by their 10 year warranty. After discussions with Neil we decide to go a little larger than 3 metres and buy their SF340R, 3.4 metres long with a generous beam of 1.8 metres. Although we would have been happy with pontoons made from PVC/TPU we decide to go with the top of the line TPU, largely because this offers ultimate durability and in a worst case scenario our RHIB is our life boat. TPU costs an additional $755 bringing the price to $6,992. Neil’s attention to detail continued to impress, for example suggesting that he pre-drill the mounting holes for wheels and rod holders in the alloy hull prior to its powder coating to minimise future corrosion.

BRING ON THE POWER The RHIB with its outboard, fuel and gear will weigh about 150kg so we need a 24V DC powered crane with a safe working load of at least that. We find plenty of options for large cranes but few for smaller units.

Australia’s Davco is a popular brand but its delivery time was quoted in excess of six months at that time.

Motor Yacht Service Centre (MYSC) are the New Zealand agent for Brisbane-based Australian Davits and Cranes (ADC) and we find them very helpful having fitted many ADCs with good results. MYSC’s owner Dean Ryder checks Rapport and quotes $13,973 plus installation for their 350kg capacity crane mounted on our starboard side with its standpipe passing down through our master berth’s wardrobe thus minimising interior disruption.

Oceanlift cranes are produced on a bespoke basis in Rotorua and we find owner Mark Thomson also provides lots of information, quoting $13,711 plus installation for his 200kg capacity crane.

Both units will suit us however the ADC’s additional capacity will provide an extra safety margin, more future flexibility and enhanced resale value. These factors combined with the fact that MYSC install their ADC cranes whereas we need a separate contractor to instal the Oceanlift lead us to choose ADC. We expect the installation to take around three days and to cost around $6-8,000.

SEA TRIAL ADDING ACCESSORIES Chandlers supply storage covers in various sizes and these are essential for protection against harmful ultra violet rays and the elements. Frank used his Quicksilver for expeditions and carried all his equipment aboard.

Our Seafarer will primarily be used as a tender, so we’ll only carry basic equipment of life jackets, tiller extension, anchor, chain and warp, length of line for towing or other emergencies, orange safety square, bailer, sponge, telescopic boathook marked for depths, knife, basic tool kit and spare kill switch. Secondarily we’ll use it for expeditions when we’ll carry additional safety and other gear depending on each situation.

We’ll also carry aboard Rapport a spare propeller (of a different pitch) and sea water pump impeller. Total cost of accessories including Beachmaster wheels is $900.

We find the crane simple to use and the RHIB is very stable and even with the 6hp outboard performs well, easily planing with one person and achieving a near plane with two. It tows well and stays very dry too with heaps of internal space. The Suzuki finally arrives midJanuary and MYSC kindly swap the engines over for us.

Now the real fun begins and we can easily plane with four adults aboard and tow the grand kids on their toys.

We’ve been using the crane and RHIB for five months now and it’s met all our needs including providing the extra fun we wanted. If you’re embarking on a project like this give plenty of thought to the dinghy’s intended use. A 3.4 metre model with a 15hp outboard is a bit too big and heavy for use just as a tender that you want to be able to pull up above the high water mark.

However it’s ideal for us as our combination tender, water taxi, expedition craft and life raft.

INSTALLATION We place our orders by 20 July expecting crane installation and delivery of the Seafarer and outboard by end October. Melbourne was already under covid lock down and New Zealand follows in August leaving us wondering when we might see our crane. The Seafarer RHIB is ready by mid October but its outboard hasn’t arrived.

The crane arrives early December and MYSC complete a very tidy installation a few days later.

Fortunately we have a spare Mercury 4-stroke 6hp outboard to use initially.

PURPOSE Williams Jet Tenders have been designed as the perfect motoryacht companion. When it comes to a very compact RIB especially conceived to fit into a tender garage or transom platforms, the Williams 285 Turbojet is a perfect match.

illiams Tenders were established in Oxfordshire, England in 2004 and quickly became market leaders in four stroke turbojet tenders. This world recognised brand is now available in New Zealand through importer Sports Marine. The 2.90m 285 is one of two models in the Turbojet range, the other the slightly larger 3.30m, 325. Both have the same 1.70m beam and a stowage height of 0.76m (low profile) to 0.96m. However, if you have the space, then Williams also offers other petrol and diesel jet tenders from the Minijet 280 through to 7.1m Evojet.

POCKET ROCKET

Power for the Turbojet range comes from a 90hp Rotax ACE 903 engine through a very compact jet unit.

This is tucked away under the helm console, which hinges up well out of the way should you need to get in for maintenance or service. With safety in mind, the Turbojet comes with a fire suppression system located in the engine bay. Just ahead of the engine is a 40-litre fuel tank.

The 285 Turbojet is an absolute pocket rocket with a top speed of 40 knots. While most small jet tenders take a bit of driving to get sorted out, not so the Williams 285 Turbojet.

Right from the first time I engaged the jet unit the boat was as easy to drive as any outboard. Gone was

the need to correct and recorrect the helm at low speeds. The boat tracked perfectly and at all speeds was easy and very predictable to drive. One of the reasons is the fact the boat is fitted with small plastic fins at the rear of each sponson. These help to stop the hull sliding sideways at all speeds. It was a fun boat to drive. I liked the driving position, which made me feel very secure at speed. I still made sure I ran with the kill switch…just in case. The instruments are easy to read, the throttle is well placed, and the steering is effortless.

Coming alongside the dock or a boat, it is always prudent to remember that the jet unit is consistently producing thrust, even when it is in neutral, so you will find the boat is always wanting to move forward.

For a novice jetboat driver, Williams includes a power limiter to help new drivers learn safely how to steer and control the boat.

The grp hull and inner liner are surrounded by Hypalon tubes.

Fabric handrails on the tubes are ideal for anyone sitting upfront, plus there are a couple of webbing handholds below the forward seat.

The boat is designed as a four-seater with a single driver's helm seat right aft against the transom and seating for 2-3 forward. There are a couple of fold-away backrests which can be moved out of the way when not required. Okay, the internal spaces are tight, but considering the actual dimensions of the 285 Turbojet, I think Williams has done a great job in maximising the space. There are no

storage lockers but then it’s the sort of boat that doesn’t need them.

Should you take on any water, there are three drain bungs in the footwell, one forward and two aft.

You pull out the bung and once the water has drained out of the floor, replace the bung. Failure to do so will mean water will refill back into the footwells. Also, if you are going to tow the tender behind your boat, make sure you close off the towing valve, otherwise the engine space will flood, causing serious damage.

A bilge pump is also standard in the 285. Being a yacht tender that may be deck stowed, the Turbojet comes with four lifting points. Williams can even supply strops, so you know you have everything set up right for the boat's weight (300kgs) and balance.

BLING IT

While the standard boat has white and grey tubes and a white console, you can up-spec the Williams 285 with a variety of tube colour options, upholstery upgrades to match your boat, and you can even have

your boat name embossed in the upholstery.

There is also a teak option for the floor, side consoles and platform. The standard finish is white GRP, but it doesn't quite have the same bling factor as the teak or faux teak finish.
