Getting A Grip

Ron Czerniak takes an objective overview as to which type of anchor winch may be most suitable for your boat.

Mat Hewetson discusses two key methods for targeting kingfish in deep water, both work well and will help you catch more of the tough, green-backed fighters.

From the high peaks of Chile/Patagonia to the dry dusty plains of Argentina a group of Kiwi jet boaters took on a great adventure. In the first of a two part series Matthew Fallow recounts the team travels in Chile/Patagonia.

In this buyer’s guide to tiller steer boats, we look at some of the production models available in New Zealand from 3.5m through to 6m.

AT THE OTHER END While the alloy hardtop is the flavour of the month, in fact, years, well actually the last five years plus, not everyone wants, needs or can afford one. When I stepped out of the hardtop world over three years ago, I decided to go right back to where a lot of my boating started…tiller steer dinghies. I spent many years as a kid and growing up, with first an old plywood dinghy and a Seagull outboard and then later one of the earliest alloy dinghies, a De Havilland 12. Over the years I progressed and as my kids started to get into boating, I always seemed to have a 10ft or 12ft alloy dinghy, either a Parkercraft or a Fyran on the section. Living by the beach meant having a boat, no matter what size was compulsory. While the Seagull was a great little introductory outboard, it was well superseded by the time my kids got on the water, so we moved up to a more modern two stroke Evinrude 5hp. For many years that engine and others like it powered a wide range of alloy dinghies and RIBs. Once we progressed to larger trailer boats, the last of those, a 10ft Fyran lost its appeal and was left all but forgotten behind my garage. Twenty years on it is still there and I even have a 3hp Mercury outboard to power it. Maybe something my grandkids can use one day. I have sort of gone full circle and am now an owner of a tiller steer boat once again. While my McLay 481 with a Mercury 75 and Big Tiller is a lot more than any tiller steer boats I have had in the past, essentially it’s much the same but on steroids. In this issue, we look at the tiller steer market, which I found to be a lot bigger than I thought. After doing some research, we identified around 100 different tiller steer production alloy boats, albeit about half of those are from two Australian builders, Quintrex and Savage. The reason we included them is they both have dealer representation in New Zealand. However, from the Kiwi manufacturers, there is still a huge range from 3m through to 6m and most of those models are also available with centre or side console. I also had the opportunity to review a trio of tiller steer boats from newbies, Nuline and Adventure and the well established Commando Boats and although all around the same size they were all very different. And that’s the beauty of alloy, you can change things around to suit, no matter if it’s a 7m hardtop or a 4m dinghy. Each boat offered something unique to the brand and each could be totally customised. Check out our listing and pictorial on tiller steer boats on page 78. If you are in the market for a small open boat, then there’s certainly got to be a model to suit amongst it.

NEW GENERATION KIWI KRAFT Kiwi Kraft 590

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #10

10

Kiwi Kraft pontoon boats have been around for some years and more recently have been marketed by Paraparaumu-based Boat City. The range is extensive and runs alongside the Aqualine models, although there are subtle differences between the two. The company has recently released three entirely new models; 520 Fisherman (See review this issue), and the 590 and 620 hardtops. While all are still based on the same

well proven Hush Tec pontoon hull form, the new boats carry more beam than their predecessors and have a stylish new pontoon design. Gone is the round tube look in favour of flatter sides both externally and internally. The cockpit’s offer maximum beam, plus there’s more storage in the boats. The hardtop models provide excellent undercover protection as well as twin berths that are suitable for overnighting. The interior is all fabric

lined, offering a warming appeal to the boat. The hulls are built to the highest standards with both CPC and MSA classifications and are virtually unsinkable. The pontoons are welded and pressure tested to MSA standards, adding extra reserve buoyancy. Look for full reviews on both the 590 and 620 hardtops in AB #11 (Sept release) www.boatcity.co.nz

news Maggie, a 12m Roger Hill design.

TWO ALLOY POWERCATS LAUNCHED Tauranga based Alloy Cats recently launched a Roger Hill Yacht Design, (www.powercatsnz.com) 12m displacement cat for an Auckland client. To be based at Bayswater Marina, the all alloy power cat has been finished to an exceptionally high standard. Power is a pair of 270hp V6 Hyundai diesels, which gives a top speed of around 26 knots. The 4.52m beam Maggie has a light ship displacement of 7870 kgs and heavy ship of 8993 kgs. Opua-based NSR Alloy Solutions (contact@alloyboatbuilders.co.nz) recently launched their first large recreational power cat and already have a second one (15m) in build. Garfield, a 14m Alan Walker, designed all alloy power cat has been constructed for an experienced yachtsman, looking for a genuine offshore cruiser. The hull is full displacement canoe stern design, which provides an easily driven hull with low horsepower. Named Garfield, it is built tough with 6mm hull and 5mm topsides and displaces 14 tonnes (light). Builder, Terry Forsbrey says that both power cats are designed for serious passage making and have the tankage and fuel economy to suit. While the 14m version carries 3800 litres, the 15m holds 5000 litres, both enough for a TransTasman and Pacific Island crossing with plenty to spare. Top speed is an impressive 23 knots, with a range of 2300nm @ 9.5 knots, for 1.5 lpnm. Garfield is powered by a pair of Hyundai 270 hp engines through conventional shafts. The layouts are entirely customised by the owners, with spacious hulls and a wide 6m beam to provide exceptional space for accommodation and recreational areas.

NEW ZEALAND’S LARGEST BOAT SHOW IS ABOUT TO GET EVEN BIGGER According to Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show general manager Dave Gibbs demand for more space, from both new and existing exhibitors, has been “intense”. As a result, the 2017 show, at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane, Auckland on May 18-21 will boast a very impressive extra 700sqm of stand area! Dave Gibbs says exhibitors wanting to showcase a substantially larger than usual number of new brands (and new models from existing brands) is largely behind the increased demand. Here’s an example of just some of the new alloy models that will be unveiled for the first time at this year’s show: IMAGE BOATS: 6.5 PONTOON Renowned for their conventional rough water capable designs, Invercargill boat builder Image Boats is now producing a Pontoon line as well. At the show, they will unveil their new 6.5 Pontoon, a smaller version of 7.08 Pontoon that was launched late last year.

The big news in 4-strokes are the new Tohatsu 50,40, 30 and 25 HP engines – which boast new features, with more options matched with even better performance. • Low end Torque with Immediate Throttle response and acceleration

ULTIMATE 18 CUDDY An entry level 6-metre boat, starting from $46,500 with a 90hp two stroke outboard. Like its larger sibling (the Ultimate 21), it can be customised, has a 17-deg deadrise and fine entry for soft riding and a 200-litre flooding keel for increased stability at rest.

• Introducing "TOCS", Tohatsu On-board Communication System (NMEA compatible) • Variable Idle Control (850,950.1050 rpm) trolling simplicity • Improved fuel efficiency • Easy Flushing connection system (no engine run) • Modern and efficient cowl design

NULINE 450 CENTRE CONSOLE Woodbine Marine is releasing their brand of Nuline aluminium boats ranging from the Nuline 450 Dinghy to the 480 Centre Console. Made in New Zealand from marine grade alloy, Nuline Boats is targeting everyone from first timers to dedicated fishing gurus with turnkey packages, seating 4, from $16,995. SEALEGS 7.7M SPORT D-TUBE Designed and built in-house by Sealegs, the new 7.7m Sport D-Tube is aimed at those wanting more volume, coupled with additional features for fishing. The open layout allows anglers to play fish right around the centre console while the placement of the inboard powerpack on the transom allows for additional under-seat storage beneath the helm seat.

CJD OFFER WORLD’S MOST EFFICIENT WATER MAKER

CJD Watermakers are Kiwi designed and manufactured that have set a whole new standard for reliable, efficient water makers. Available in two versions that suit marine applications, CJD Watermakers claim that their DC60 is the most efficient water maker in the world. Producing 60 lph and only using 19 amps @ 12 vdc, the DC60 is ideal for boats with a limited power supply, such as no generator. Good battery or solar power is all you need to run this unit. It carries an RRP of $NZ9600 plus gst. The secret of the efficiency of the DC60 says its designer and company owner, Chris Dent, is built around a 100% reliable energy recovery system with a pump, that based on power (watts) per litre of water produced is the lowest in the world. Dent claims it is up to 300% more efficient than some competitive units. Dent says that he saw a need in the market for a unit that offered efficiency and reliability, the two main items that have been achieved through using minimal moving parts and developing his seals. Running at an incredibly low 42 rpm, the unique four-cylinder CJD pump, the very heart of the system, cuts down dramatically on seal wear and can, in fact, run dry for hours without doing any damage. The pump and the energy recovery system are all combined into one compact unit. CJD Watermakers are not stopping with the DC60 and have in development the DC120, a unit with double the capacity of the DC60, but still retaining the highest levels of efficiency. COMMUNITY BANDS TOGETHER TO HELP SAVE LIVES

...when quality counts

After years of effort and fundraising, as well as generous contributions from major funders, ‘North Shore Rescue’ has been being launched. Shoppers at a popular North Shore market have helped contribute $250,000 to the build cost of a new, purposebuilt Coastguard Rescue Vessel. The vessel is the newest addition to the 28-strong Coastguard fleet that supports Coastguard’s marine search and rescue activities around the Northern Region. Built by AMF Boats, the 9.5m alloy-hulled Quick Response Vessel is custom designed to be suitable for the variable conditions of the Hauraki Gulf. Powered by a pair of Yamaha 250hp outboards, the new North Shore Rescue replaced their existing vessel that’s completed almost a decade of service with the North Shore unit and was one of the busiest vessels in the country. Its proven design is reflected in the lines of the new ‘North Shore Rescue’ vessel.

Volvo Penta’s Battery Management System HELLA LED FLOODLIGHTS NOW WITH DUAL COLOUR OPTIONS Bright white light is great when working or performing a specific task but often a softer tone or secondary colour is desired. Owners can now benefit from two alternating LED hues with the new Dual Colour Sea Hawk-XL lamps from Hella marine. Measuring 170mm W x 68mm H x 58mm D these stylish lamps keep a low profile. Two rows of bright white LEDs producing 750 lumens for working, docking, diving or fishing. A third row of alternate colour LEDs increases versatility. Red LED models preserve night vision for commercial use, ocean racing or sportfishing. A blue LED version enhances the boat’s appearance, and a warm white option matches interior lighting and creates a softer hue for more comfort. The Sea Hawk-XL lamps feature a corrosion-resistant, thermal polymer ceramic housing that is completely sealed to IP 67 standard. Its unique design distributes heat away from internal components for longer life. A heavy duty, Swiss-made Grilamid lens provides exceptional resistance to impacts, and both UV and chemical damage. Volvo-Penta has released its new Battery Management System, bringing simplicity and ease of use for vessels owners all at the touch of a button. The modular system monitors remotely control and manages power supply from the boat’s battery groups. The system can be installed with the Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system or as stand-alone system, non-EVC. The system consists of four components; the Battery Control Module (BCM), 2.5” Battery Management Display, Battery Sensor and the e-Key Remote. For boat builders and marine technicians, fewer components significantly simplify the electrical installation as much fewer components are needed. The Battery Control Module (BCM) acts as the main hub for the boat’s electrical system making battery status reliable and easier to monitor from a display at the helm. The Battery Management (BM) display lets users remote control the main circuit breakers individually or in groups and with the addition of the e-Key remote, vessel users can manage the main power functions onboard the vessel with a single key fob. www.volvopenta.com

Matte Black

Suzuki

Suzuki Marine has introduced a new matte-black version (with SS graphics) of its inline four-cylinder DF200, originally designed in 2014. Suzuki engineered the DF200A with a 10.3:1 compression ratio (9.7 percent greater than in the DF175A) and a new cowling to provide cooler air directly to the engine’s long-track tuned intake manifold. Twin intake and exhaust valves allow the engine to breathe more efficiently. Suzuki’s Lean Burn Technology that optimises the fuel-to-air mixture once you establish a cruising rpm also contributes to efficiency. Knock, oxygen and water detection sensors monitor and control engine operating parameters, resulting in superb reliability.

Raymarine FLIR’s latest compact pan and tilt thermal cameras, the new M100 and M200, provide a huge safety advantage for those travelling at night, in fog or in heavy weather. With an integrated multicore video processor to deliver superior image quality and advanced artificial intelligence, the new M100 and M200, when paired with Raymarine’s new AXIOM multifunction displays, enable skippers to take advantage of Raymarine FLIR’s clever new ClearCruise intelligent thermal analytics technology. Using new artificial intelligence and video analytics technologies, ClearCruise identifies “non-water” objects (such as other boats, obstacles or navigation markers) in the vicinity and then alerts those on board by highlighting them on the AXIOM MFD screen and sounding an alarm. “This is of huge benefit for those fishing, cruising or racing at night,” says Mark Milburn, CEO at New Zealand Raymarine FLIR distributor Lusty and Blundell. “ClearCruise will pick up objects that would not otherwise be visible and will visually and audibly alert the crew so they can, if necessary, take evasive action. Engineered with Raymarine FLIR’s Boson high performance thermal camera core, the M100 and M200 both feature an integrated multi-core video processor to deliver superior image quality. They are quick and easy to install, using just a simple Ethernet connection to network with multiple compatible MFDs. The full resolution 320x240 Raymarine FLIR M100 and M200 thermal vision cameras start at just $4592 and will be available nationwide from Lusty and Blundell’s network of leading marine dealers. www.lusty-blundell.co.nz.

SURTEES 700 GAME FISHER

Boat shows regularly offer a prize to encourage people to attend. However, no show in Australasia (or, as far as we know, anywhere else) has ever offered anything like this. The 2017 Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show’s tempter is a 7m hardtop Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize Package worth an astonishing $150,000!

towing a biscuit or quietly anchored and having lunch. Regardless of our activities, the 700 Game Fisher was performing exactly as advertised. The ride, irrespective of the sea state and our angle of attack, was smooth, soft and predictable. Of course, with a 20 deg deadrise and a reasonably high hard top (easily able to accommodate those well over 2m), one does need to pay attention to trim, especially with a large contingent on board and prone to moving about. However, a set of Lectratab auto retract tabs, complete with LED control panel, made this a relatively easy issue to fix.

Twin berths are long enough for overnighting.

It is definitely a prize worth winning. Sitting atop a stylish, Epic trailer and a Balex Auto Boat Loader is an extra-packed Surtees 700 Game Fisher powered by twin Yamaha 115hp four stroke outboards. One of Surtees most popular offshore models, the 700 Game Fisher is something of a floating showcase for what the company calls “Surtees IQ.” A combination of water ballast technology, non-pounding deep V hull and engineered

sub-floor systems, the system, according to CEO Adam Dyck, is designed to ensure the boat slices smoothly through the chop and provides a stable fishing platform at rest. Having spent the best part of two days on a sometimes reasonably choppy Hauraki Gulf, it is hard to disagree with any of that. At times there were just two of us on board; at others, up to seven. On occasions we were blasting at full tilt across the chop, then we were soft bait drifting, water skiing,

While most owners would probably choose to go with a single engine (probably a 250hp), the prize boat has been fitted with a pair of Yamaha 115hp four-stroke outboards and, as we discovered, there are definite advantages in that (See sidebar). Two that stood out to us were the stability of ride at speed, especially in the rougher water, and the exceptional load carrying. On the advice of the team from Yamaha, the prize boat’s port engine has been fitted with a counter-rotating gearbox. This means that while the starboard engine turns clockwise in the usual fashion, the port engine turns counter-clockwise. This

means the engines are throwing their “dirty water (the water that has just been through the propeller) outwards, away from the boat and, most importantly, away from the other propeller. This means both propellers are churning through clean, un-aerated water, ensuring good grip and minimal, if any, slippage. Having two props, with their increased surface area, chewing through clean water in opposite directions like this produces a smoother, more stable ride, especially in more moderate and rougher conditions. That increased surface area also ensures more bite when hauling up a skier. The increased torque also improves load-carrying, which is one of the reasons a twin engine set up is so popular with charter boats, water taxis and the like.

BUILT TO FISH While Surtees boats are no doubt used for other activities, there is no doubt that they are first and foremost, designed for fishing. The large cockpit has been purpose built to accommodate serious fishers and all their gear. There is a Surtees bait station (complete with Ezemount, three rod holders and drainage house) centrally positioned on the transom and the plumbed live bait tank is close at hand under the port side walk-through. There are another three rod holders per side in the coamings and a further six up in the integral rocket launcher. There is more rod and general stowage in the deep side pockets and handy toe kicks on the both sides for those needing to brace themselves while fighting something decent. Acknowledging that fishing can often include prolonged periods of inactivity (while at the same time being thirsty work), Surtees has ensured its side

TWO OUTBOARDS VERSUS ONE To better understand how two smaller outboards compare to one larger engine, we contacted Yamaha Motor NZ Ltd’s technical sales advisor, Hugh Stewart. Hugh is a big fan of twin rigs, in particular for those keen on blue water fishing, and here’s why: • Better balance when underway, creating a more stable ride, especially in a seaway and when battling big swells. • A margin of safety, enabling one to get home on a single engine in the unlikely event there is a problem with the other. • Better when trolling, making it easier to maintain a constant speed rather than having to “hunt” for the right revs/speed. • Better manoeuvrability, particularly at the low speed, enabling the boat to be positioned using just the throttles. • Better load carrying (hence their popularity with charter operators, water taxis and dive boats).

The large cockpit has been purpose built to accommodate serious fishers and all their gear.

decks are wide enough to comfortably accommodate even the most widebottomed of us, while also thoughtfully inserting a stainless steel drink holder alongside each of the rod holders. There is also LED floor, cabin and floodlights for those out after dark and a triple Century Batteries system under the transom to ensure there is always enough power. A 280-litre fuel tank ensures this prize rig has a good cruising range and

• Better “noise”: although the punch from the hole is about the same, the harmonics of the twin rig are a sound sure to thrill any petrolhead.

its large cabin, complete with infill bunks, means one can easily overnight.

Hugh recommends anyone installing a dual rig to fit a counter-rotating propellers to ensure a better ride, cleaner water over the props and minimal slippage.

EXTRAS GALORE Combining the Surtees 700 Game Fisher and the twin 115hp four stroke Yamahas would create a pretty amazing prize package, even if one stopped there. Luckily for the exceptionally fortunate person who will take home this package after May 21, neither Surtees nor the show organisers

He also advises against using only one engine for trolling, saying people think it will save them fuel but the opposite is actually the case.

BOAT TEST SURTEES 700 GAME FISHER choose to do that. Instead, they have fitted the boat with an incredible range of practical and desirable extras. For a start, the trailer the prize package sits on is no ordinary trailer. Instead, it is a stylish, black Epic tandem axle braked trailer, the sort of transportation system that makes people want to take a second look, even when sitting on its own in the car park. Making it even more desirable is a set of new Surtees protective stone guards, a pair of striking mag wheels and a Balex Auto Boat Loader. This Kiwi invention is an automated launch and retrieval system that, among its other attributes, enables one to launch the boat simply by pointing a remote control out the sliding side window by the helm station and pushing the appropriate button. The Garmin electronics package is also a highly enviable one. Worth around $12,000, it includes a 12’ GPS/Map 7412 multi-function display, including 3D G2 vision charts; a GM24 xHD radar (whose radar dome graces the hardtop), a TM265LH CHIRP fishfinder, complete with a 1kw transducer and a VHF. Other extras on board include a Lone Star GX2 drum winch system (complete with Sarca anchor and rode), which is exceptionally easy to operate, a Fusion UD750 stereo system for great music both underway and at rest, a Jabsco washdown pump to keep everything clean and a driver’s side Exalto window wiper, which proves handy in the cross breeze coming home. Ultraflex hydraulic steering

and a Softrider pedestal helm seat enhance the driving experience. Crew seating is provided by a fixed seat facing forward on the port side, with a padded seat on the handy Icey-Tek chilly bin below and the wide side decks. Completing the package are the painted hull and cabin, a set of sliding windows in the hardtop (so appreciated on a hot day!), a canvas cockpit shade extension (ditto), cabin carpet and a fold-down transom bench seat (which is also sturdy enough to stand on if needed). Also included are the standard Surtees’ 10year recreational hull warranty, a year’s worth of Yamaha Marine Insurance and a family pack of Hutchwilco Surtees lifejackets. And, so that the winner need not waste valuable time ashore, the fuel tank will be full and the Epic trailer will be both registered and warranted. The draw for the $150,000 Surtees/ Yamaha Grand Prize Package is open to anyone who attends this year’s Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show (at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane, Auckland on May 18-21), having bought their ticket either online at www.boatshow.co.nz (before May 10) or at the gate.

Drum Reel Anchor Winches

Conventional Rope/ Chain Anchor Winches Ron Czerniak takes an objective overview in regards to which type of anchor winch may be most suitable for your 5 to 9 m trailer boat. Hopefully, by the time you’ve finished reading it, you will feel reasonably confident in deciding on either a drum reel anchor winch or a conventional rope/chain anchor winch for use on your vessel.

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

Various DrumWarp ropes, 8-Plait (Braid) and 3-Strand Nylon ropes illustrating actual diameters

As for any product, especially a marine product, it’s a case of “horses for courses”. As you read this article think of a drum reel winch as being similar to a fishing reel, wherein the fishing line wraps around a drum as the operator cranks the handle to haul in the line. Think of a conventional rope/chain winch as being similar to a sheet winch on a sail boat. The line (or sheet in sailing terms) wraps around the winch drum as the operator hauls in on it, peels it off the drum and tails it into the cockpit or onto the deck as the sail is trimmed. CONVENTIONAL ROPE/ CHAIN ANCHOR WINCHES: When automatic rope/chain anchor winches (windlasses) hit the market about 25 years ago, virtually all of them, whether a vertical or horizontal type (see image below), were deck mounted with the rope and chain feeding out of (anchor deployment) or into (anchor retrieval) the ‘chain locker’ (often called the anchor locker). Whether an all chain rode or a combined rope/chain rode is being used, the main consideration has always been how much rode can be fitted into the vessel’s chain locker. The factors determining the amount of rode to be used have always been a reflection of what the boat is being used for and, most importantly, in what depth of water the boat is going to be anchored. In addition, the basic rule of thumb regarding how much rode to deploy when anchoring has always been a minimum of three times the depth of water. So, if you are anchoring in 50 metres of water, you need to be able to carry and deploy at least 150 metres of

Various splices: DrumWarp, 3-Strand Nylon, 8-Plait (Braid) Nylon. The bottom two ‘splices’ – rope to chain joints - illustrate a metal rope clamp and a whipped joint. Neither are recommended.

anchor rode. Providing your chain locker is big enough for the amount of rode you need to carry for your particular anchoring situations, then usually there aren’t any problems. However, if the chain locker is too small for the amount of rode you want to use, that’s when the problems start arising. Using a simple analogy, no matter how much you would like to put two litres of water into a one litre container, it ain’t going to happen. Same with your chain locker. One hundred and fifty metres of rope and chain won’t fit into an anchor locker with only enough volume to hold one hundred metres of rode. Despite the fact that most recreational trailer boats have been using ‘conventional’ automatic rope/chain windlasses or simple capstan winches for the past quarter century, drum reel winches have been around even longer. However, up until recently, they were mainly seen on commercial vessels. Particularly, commercial fishing boats. Over the years, the needs of the boat owner have not always been provided for by the boat builder in terms of anchoring requirements. It often seemed like the boat designer and/or builder treated the chain locker as an afterthought. Consequently, when “Joe Fisherman” wanted to anchor in 50 metres of water, but his anchor locker would only accommodate 100 metres of rode (remember the three times rule?), he was out of luck regarding how much rode he wanted to stow on board. Although boat designers/builders began to realise that the chain lockers they were building into their vessels often had to be bigger, this wasn’t always possible. Keep in mind that today’s

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

boat owner demands a lot of ‘stuff’ on a typical 6.5 metre trailer boat, and often the anchor locker was the boat designer’s last consideration after cramming in forward bunks in the cuddy cabin, space for ice chests, hydraulic seats, heaps of electronic gear and even a marine toilet, etc. The end result frequently being an afterthought anchor locker not much bigger than a shoe box! This comment is not intended to denigrate boat designers/builders, but is simply a reflection of the fact that boat design sometimes doesn’t keep up with the developmental advances in marine products and vice versa. The amount of rode that can be fed into the chain locker using a conventional rope/ chain winch is proportional to the volume of the locker. But not always directly so. A nice deep, wide, V-shaped locker allows for a lot of rope and chain to fall into the space without piling up and ‘jamming’ the winch. However, the same volume configured like a shallow, rectangular box (imagine like aboard a catamaran), which is perhaps only 250 cm deep, but no matter how wide and long it is, isn’t going to ‘automatically’ allow the same amount of rode to drop into this locker compared to the deep V-shaped locker mentioned above. DRUM REEL ANCHOR WINCHES: Enter the drum reel winch. As mentioned earlier, drum reel winches have been around ‘forever’, but only recently have some manufacturers developed more practical designs suitable for use on trailer boats without having to mount them on the deck (not a popular or aesthetically pleasing alternative for most recreational

boat owners), but rather in the chain locker. But why the sudden interest in using drum reel anchor winches aboard recreational trailer boats? Simple. Anchor locker volume. Refer previous comments above. It becomes immediately apparent that by wrapping the rope and chain around the drum, a lot of rode can be stowed in a relatively small volume. Basically, if a drum reel winch, designed to hold 150 metres of combined rope/chain rode, can still be physically installed in a given anchor locker, then ergo, so can the rode wrapped around its drum. In theory, although this all sounds straight forward, and you may now be thinking (all other considerations being equal – i.e. cost, pull capability, reliability, etc.), “Why would I think about installing anything other than a drum reel winch?” The reality is never that simple. The prime concern regarding a drum reel winch is to ensure that the rope and chain feeds evenly back and forth onto the drum when retrieving the anchor. A fishing reel solves this by having a guide that runs back and forth over the drum evenly feeding the line as it is wound in. With the exception of very expensive and very technically sophisticated captive reel winches (most often found on sailing superyachts to wind sheets and halyards), no current drum reel anchor winch manufacturer has come up with a cost effective way to do this on their designs; relying hopefully on the fact that the rode will want to ‘fall off’ the high point of the rode as it wraps around the drum. Imagine a simple home garden hose reel and you’ll get the idea. Usually works, but not always. So, whereas a conventional rope/chain windlass can malfunction due to rode building up in the chain locker, so too can a drum reel winch malfunction if the rode doesn’t feed properly onto the drum. However, the biggest benefit of a drum reel winch is that, in general, it means that you should be able to fit more rope/chain rode in a given anchor locker (especially if it has limited volume) than you might with a conventional rope/chain windlass using the same length and size of rode.

SIMPLY SUPERIOR NEW 3D SONAR AND AXIOM MULTIFUNCTION DISPLAYS

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: One of the main things that will help ensure trouble free operation, whether it be a conventional rope/chain windlass or a drum reel winch, is the type of rope being used. When considering a conventional winch, it is strongly recommended that the rope being used be high quality 8-Plait (braid) nylon or, at the least, quality 3-Strand nylon rope spliced to suitably sized high test, short link chain. Most rope/chain windlass manufacturers/distributors can also supply you with suitable rope/chain combinations for any of their given winch models. In the case of a drum reel winch; although 3-Strand or 8-Plait nylon rope can be used, it would appear that the most suitable rope is one recently developed by a New Zealand company who claim that their “DrumWarp Braid”, made up of a high strength double braid blend of fibres with good abrasion resistance and over 25% elasticity at tested break strength, works the best on drum reel winches. In lay terms, why is this strength important? Because, when retrieving your anchor, you’ll probably drag your bow under water (slight exaggeration, but you get the idea) or burn out your motor (no exaggeration) before the rope will break. Plus this rope’s elasticity will ensure that there are no ‘gear damaging’ shock loads while at anchor. Meaning that DrumWarp Braid characteristics can be favourably compared to high quality 8-Plait (braid) nylon rope with typically similar strength and elasticity characteristics. However, because of

the nature of DrumWarp Braid rope, you will be able to get more rope on a given drum reel than you would if you used equivalent strength 8-Plait Rope. Although other types of very strong ropes are available on the market (such as polyester, Dyneema or Spectra, for example), these should be avoided as they have virtually no elasticity, meaning they may shock load the anchor off the bottom and/or put severe loading on the winch and its mountings. Which brings up another anchoring fact; unless conditions are quite calm, you should never anchor off your winch. Instead, the anchor rode should be tied off on a suitably strong deck cleat or bollard. Conversely, and a topic I won’t go into detail now, is the fact that you should always motor up to the anchor before recovering it, rather than using the anchor winch to pull your boat to the anchor when retrieving it. Whether you end up choosing a drum reel winch or a conventional rope/ chain winch, one other very important factor must be addressed. Your anchor rode must have a correct and proper rope to chain splice. If the splice is not done correctly, it could easily become the weakest and most problematic section of your anchor rode. In the case of conventional nylon ropes (either 3-Strand or 8-Plait) the rope splice must be correctly done to ensure a smooth transition of the rope/chain joint around the ‘chainwheel’ and then through the windlass into or out of the chain locker. Fortunately, reputable rode suppliers (often the windlass manufacturer/supplier themselves) will provide you with the correct rode you require and already properly spliced. Although the method

used to connect the rope and chain with ropes such as DrumWarp is different than that used on standard nylon ropes, it is equally important that this joint is done correctly. For example, a whipped loop of rope around the end chain link portion of the rode, is simply not strong enough and will cause problems; not least of which is the rope separating from the chain under high load. SO, WHICH IS BETTER? A DRUM REEL WINCH OR A CONVENTIONAL ROPE/ CHAIN WINCH? Neither. It all depends on what is going to be best for your actual boat and your specific needs. “Horses for courses”. In an ‘apples to apples’ comparison, you will likely find that in terms of performance, reliability, price, control accessories, warranty, etc., that the most suitable conventional rope/chain windlass will be equivalent to the most suitable drum reel winch on just about any trailer boat which has a reasonable anchor locker. Interestingly, it seems that to date the majority of drum reel winches have been installed on trailer boats constructed from aluminium as opposed to those constructed from fibreglass or wood. But, the material the boat is constructed from is not an issue in respect to your deliberations regarding whether you should install a drum reel winch or a conventional rope/chain winch on your particular vessel. However, whether you end up installing a conventional rope/chain windlass or a drum reel winch on your craft, make sure it is fitted correctly. Nearly all anchor winch manufacturers have a website and most of the information you will need or

If you get the feeling that the information you’re receiving is all ‘smoke and mirrors’, start shopping elsewhere. However, to get you started, below is a brief descriptive list of the main drum reel winch and conventional rope/chain windlasses manufacturers/ distributors.

LONESTAR Created in 2010, LSM manufacture drum winches for boats from 3.6m-25m. Innovation is at the forefront of Lone Star Marine and they have introduced many new features, products & accessories to the drum winch market. They claim to be the only company to utilise a twin shaft bearing system which

greatly increases drive train longevity and to have created the first winch motor with a fully waterproof AU Certified IP68 rating (GX Series). The GX Series utilises hi-spec drives and feature Italian manufactured transmissions with marine rated outputs. LSM utilise stronger all machined (not cast) bearing hubs and gearbox flanges. Featuring AU made spool, shafts, cradles, bearing hubs and motor exterior, the GX Series is said to contain more AU made parts than any other drum winch on the market. LSM have also created the world’s first and only range of brushless variable speed anchor winches, the Elite, featuring the world’s first billet machined transmission on any anchor winch. Lone Star offer an industry leading, 5 Plus Lifetime Warranty, 5 years against defects and a lifetime against water getting into the motor. There are 12 different anchor winch models in the LSM range across seven standard drum sizes from 200-750mm in both standard (GX) and brushless (Elite) configurations and all units are fast for drop and retrieve right out of the box with no add ons. All winches feature an Emergency Manual Release as standard. 85% of Lone Star’s

current volume is made in Australia. www.lonestarmarine.com.au

SAVWINCH Savwinch is a well-recognised brand of drum anchor winches that are purpose designed and built for the harsh saltwater environment. They recently introduced the world’s first electronic fast fall system, which has no mechanical clutches. The new electronic fast fall (SAV-EFF) variable speed Savwinch range is Australian made and built to the highest standards and comes with a industry leading 7-year warranty. This system allows you to drop your anchor as fast as a free fall system and is electronically controlled. Using the same technology as the SAV EFF, the SAV EFF2S offers the boater a 2 - speed system, so a more cost effective system of increasing the speed of your winch.

STRESSFREE Stressfree Marine is one of Australia’s premier winch and marine manufacturers. They specialise in building anchor winches using premium materials for faster, safer and more reliable operations, in addition to custom winch solutions and accessories. Stressfree Marine’s patented Freefall ranges is the only genuine freefall winch on the market. Their latest range has innovations specifically designed for the unique New Zealand marine environment. Seeing the need for a motor and design to better respond to volcanic sea beds, and deeper ocean environments, Stressfree Marine have responded with a range of upgrades to their popular patented Freefall range. The Stressfree range is extensive and caters for every size trailer boat and bigger, from under 5m to over 11m. The smallest, the Mini Me is capable of holding 60m of 6mm double braid eye spliced to 3m of 8mm nylon and 4m of 6mm link chain. From there the range gets bigger, with the Mini and Mini Extra designed to hold up to 100 m, the Midi, 200m, the Maxi 100m and the Mighty, up to 170m. The length of the rode is determined by the warp and chain sizes and can vary on each drum. The NG Series Stress Free is built to the same quality as the standard series, with the power up and power down feature

as well as the fully engineered, patented freefall mechanism, all executed with the flick of a switch from the helm. In the event of an electrical failure all standard and NG Series models have manual override to deploy the anchor. www.stressfreemarine.com.au

MUIR Tasmanian based Muir offer four sizes of drum winches, although it is the DW08 and DW10 that are most applicable to trailer boats. All the models are available in a free fall option (DFF) and also feature, power up & power down, or manual release free fall on the one unit. Mechanical auto & manual release free fall means no troublesome electronics need to be mounted on the drum or in your chain locker. The drum shaft is on a serviceable bearing centre for smooth hassle free operation even under full load. The Muir designed HDPE & UV protected heavy duty brake means no over-run of the drum during free fall. The DW08 is a compact unit that weighs in at 15 kgs and is capable of a line speed of 33m/min, with a working load of 75kg and a maximum load of 180kg. The DW10 is designed for the larger trailer boats and has a max load of 260 kgs and working load of 75 kgs. All up weight is 30kgs. The DW12 and DW15 are both more suited to small cruisers. www.muir.com.au In addition, Muir manufactures a range of horizontal and vertical automatic rope/ chain windlasses suitable for trailer boats. The H600S/HFF600S and HR700/ HFF700 horizontal range is designed for vessels 5-8m (16-26ft) and theH900 for boats up to 11m (35ft), all offering fast powered retrieval and smooth rope chain combination operation. Ideal for recreational users and for serious fishermen. The Muir vertical range consists of the Atlantic and Storm series with the minor end of these models being most suitable for trailer boats 5-8m+ (16-26ft+).

MAXWELL MARINE As this edition of Alloy Boats goes to press I have learned that Maxwell Marine is finalising the development of a drum reel winch to add to their current range of anchoring products. This all new Maxwell drum reel winch is being developed in conjunction with a well-known, industry leading New Zealand aluminium boat manufacturer. More information will become available prior to and at the Auckland On Water Boat Show (September 28th to October 1st, 2017). www. maxwellmarine.com Maxwell, a New Zealand company that will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary this year, has long been known for their comprehensive range of vertical and horizontal automatic rope/chain anchor winches suitable for the trailer boat market. Their vertical range consists of the popular RC Series (the RC6 and RC8), with the RC8 model available with our without capstan drum, being the most appropriate for trailer boats. The purpose designed HRC Range is more suited for above deck mounting, where space in the anchor locker is limited – the HRC6 and HRC8 range are the most suitable for trailer boats.

VIPER The Viper Pro Series II Range, consisting of the Micro, 1000 and 2000 models and manufactured by Bell Marine in Australia, has set new standards in anchoring systems. With a marine grade stainless steel electric motor, Viper Drum Reel Winches have become one of the best-

selling anchor winches in Australia. They are now distributed in New Zealand by Kiwi Yachting. Bell Marine claims that with a fall rate of 45 meters per minute and a retrieval rate of over 41m/ minute, the Viper winch will ensure you get onto your GPS mark, first time, every time. Bell Marine claims unsurpassed Viper reliability with twice the torque of a conventional drum winch. The Viper Pro Series II comes with a life time warranty against water intrusion, and a 5-year Viper performance warranty. Viper has just released their new S Series winches, which are a 100% 316 stainless steel electric drum winch. The new S Series uses the Viper stainless steel gearbox with the same specification as the Pro Series II winches. Being built in stainless steel, also means that the new S Series are exceptionally strong. All models of VIPER winches are available in the “S” Series versions. www.bellmarine.com.au

they do sell a Quick drum winch under licence for Stress Free Marine. In turn Stress Free runs all Quick running gear, which they market under the SF range. Tenob, Quick’s largest customer In Australasia sells the TB512 Tumbler Capstan, their most popular capstan in NZ. Most Quick windlasses are equipped with a gypsy that are designed to work with both rope and chain and are available in two versions: with or without a drum. The drum gives you the opportunity to use a second rope other than the one already in use for the anchor. Quick windlasses are available with different gypsy sizes from 6 mm until 14 mm based on model and windlass size. Popular models are the DP2512 Prince windlass and the Genius GP21200FF and GP2200FF. Quick offer an extensive range (25 models) of vertical and horizontal rope/ chain windlasses that suit the trailer boat market, such as the Prince-DP1 and DP2 Series, which are offered in a low profile or capstan version. Quick’s horizontal range consists of the Genius GP2 - 500, 1200 and 1500 models, Hector H3-700,1000,1500 and the Heroes HR5 -1700,2300 and 3500 which are completely above deck mounted. www.tenob.co.nz

BIGGER By Freddy Foote

Everyone wants to go bigger, and in the case of Sealegs, the company has responded to demand to introduce a larger version of one of their most popular models. Freddy Foote checks out their latest model - the new 7.7m Sport D-Tube.

A Yamaha 200hp fourstroke outboard will push the 7.7m Sport D-Tube close to 40 knots.

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

BOAT TEST SEALEGS 7.7M SPORT D-TUBE

A large and open layout has been designed to appeal to fisherman

Sealegs has firmly entrenched itself as not only a great New Zealand technology company, but also a great Kiwi boat builder. As well as partnering with boat builders around the world by supplying their Sealegs technology to make boats amphibious, the Kiwi company has steadily been developing their own range of boats with now seven designed and built models in house, complimenting the handful of other boats developed in conjunction with other boat manufacturers. Designed and built in-house and based on the 7.7 Wide Console RIB Sealegs, the new 7.7m Sport D-Tube joins the company’s popular 6.1m model in the D-Tube range. The new larger model is set to appeal to those who want more volume in their amphibious craft, coupled with additional features to make it an all round and capable fishing machine. Sealegs CEO David McKee Wright says the new model was developed to meet market demand. “Our new 7.7m Sport D-Tube was developed in response to international sales demand. The initial response has been fantastic, and the new model is now in full production,” says McKee Wright. “The 6.1m has been a favourite boat for us, especially in Australia where they love

the durability of the aluminium construction and the versatility that a centre console configuration offers.” “Customers told us that they wanted a boat with a large open area for more fishing space and higher sides so that they could lean over more when playing a fish.”

FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT McKee Wright is correct. The new 7.7m Sport D-Tube enjoys an open and functional layout that fishermen will enjoy. Aft, there is access into both corners should you be playing a fish, and scuppers will ensure any water that comes over the side drains out quickly. There is wide shelf storage on both sides of the cockpit built into the top section of the D-Tube, and the top of the coamings come equipped with three rod holders on each side to compliment the two incorporated into the removable bait board. In the centre of the transom sits the engine box for the 22hp Honda that powers the Sealegs hydraulics system. This provides extra passenger seating and frees up the helm seat console for storage. The helm seat itself features a fold back bolster, meaning you can push it forward should you want to drive standing, or so you can sit and face aft while at rest fishing

42

or socialising with your passengers. The helm itself is very impressive and is certainly very busy. Featuring prominently is a 12” Simrad MFD with the Yamaha engine instruments and drive controls alongside. Below, is a Raymarine VHF radio, with a Fusion Marine Stereo alongside, linked to a pair of speakers in the bow, and another on the helm console. While underway, skipper and passengers are well protected via the single piece windscreen, and there are numerous handholds throughout the boat for passenger comfort and security. Should you wish, a bimini or a T-Top is available as an option providing extra protection from the elements. Access to the bow area is easy with plenty of room on either side of the helm console. In the bow, there is a small seat with wet storage underneath. The entire cockpit floor of the 7.7m Sport D-Tube is finished in 3M anti-slip deck tread, with this same product continuing onto the tops of the coamings as well.

WHEELS UP The Sealegs system works by having powerful motorised wheels, one at the front and two at the rear which gives the skipper a variable speed of 0-10km/h (forward and

reverse) powered by an onboard 22hp Honda driven hydraulic power pack. Once in the water, the Sealegs wheels are quickly retracted into the ‘Up’ position and are completely out of the water. The boat is then driven and used as normal. When approaching land, the Sealegs wheels are lowered into the ‘Down’ position while still moving in the water. The 7.7m Sport D-Tube is rated from 150hp outboards through to the 200hp four-stroke Yamaha option we see on our test boat. With the 200hp Yamaha four-stroke humming away on the transom, we achieved a top speed of 38.5 knots @ 6000rpm, using 72lph. Peg that back and you can expect to see a cruise speed of 19.5 knots @ 3500rpm using 21.9lph. In my experience, a Sealegs vessel is

always a little heavier than something more conventional, and of the same size, so a bigger outboard is preferable. Overall the 200hp Yamaha four-stroke performed well. It’s a big boat, designed for a total of eight passengers plus gear and with the high capacity 180L fuel tank you’re going to want the extra thrust of the 200. The ride was very good. The aluminium hull very quiet underway and even tackling some rougher water, there was no hull noise or slapping. Most of all, in the more blustery conditions we encountered on the Hauraki Gulf, the 7.7m Sport D-Tube was also very dry, the chines doing a good job of deflecting any spray down and away from the boat. If I were to be critical, I would say it was probably a little sensitive to lateral balance.

The aft bench seat houses the 22hp Honda power pack that powers the hydraulics system.

The forward area in the bow is well protected, and has seating and storage. Due to the positioning of the wheels aft, trim tabs are unable to be fitted. No big issue, you can easily balance the boat by shifting your passengers around. The 7.7m Sport D-Tube has a beam of 2.26m which is slightly narrower than what you would usually find in a boat of a similar size. There is a reason for this. Sealegs have a strong export market, and so the boat is designed to fit in a shipping container. The narrow profile doesn’t seem to impact the stability of the boat at rest. The chines resting in the water and with three of us moving around the boat, it showed very little sign of lean.

CE STANDARD

The cockpit is open and allows users plenty of room to move throughout the boat.

The 7.7m features a six chamber, 5mm aluminium pontoon D-Tube construction and it’s also important to note that like all Sealegs boats, it is built to the very stringent and demanding standards of CE and United States Coastguard. So who will the 7.7m Sport D-Tube appeal to? Fishermen for sure. Those who want an open layout and the ability to cast baits 360 degrees. I can see the boat having great appeal to the Australian market, especially fishermen who like to venture into the remote waters of the Northern Territory and Northern Queensland. The 7.7m Sport D-Tube will allow anglers to access

floodplains and shallow mangroves, and explore remote areas that would be impossible in a conventional boat. What’s more, with the wheels down, and the boat itself out of the water, they’ll be able to fish well out of reach of the crocs!

DEEP WATER FOR This boat is looking for jack mackerel schools to catch their live baits. This can take a couple of hours at times, so head out early.

Mat Hewetson discusses two key methods for targeting kingfish in deep water, both work well and will help you catch more of the tough, green-backed fighters.

By Mathew Hewetson

APPROACH KINGFISH Kingfish are a tough fighting customer and will fight dirty to earn their freedom. This 18kg fish was caught over a wreck at 100m.

Kingfish are one of our beloved fish species in New Zealand and up the top of most Kiwi anglers lists to catch. They fight hard when hooked and fresh kingfish for sashimi, pan fried or the smoker is a favourite. Most boaties head out to target snapper and might be lucky to hook-up to a kingie which is attracted to their bait, berley and struggling fish in the water from their resulting fishing. However, if you really want to have more success with kingfish then you need to actively target them and there are two sure ways to increase your captures in deep water by using live baits and jigging. Let’s examine both methods and what you will need.

LIVE BAITS FIRST Kingfish can’t resist a live bait. Jack mackerels would be the best bait to offer them, followed by small kahawai, piper, squid or koheru. Jack mackerels are usually much easier to find and catch as they are common and found in large schools. Getting up early and on the water, is well worth it as finding the schools can take time some days. The change of light is a perfect time to catch mackerel, if you have underwater lights and a berley trail going, you will see them and they are easy to catch. Otherwise, you will need to spend time looking for the schools over shallow water reefs or sandy bays. Look for the bait schools on your sounder and drop sabikis, baited with tiny bits of pilchard on light rods and reel sets. Keep moving if you have no luck until you find hungry fish. Take it steady reeling them up as they can easily fall off the small sabiki hooks. Put them into your live bait tank, if you don’t have one, you can use a large chilly bin but you will need to keep putting fresh sea water in every 10-15 minutes. You will want to catch between 30-50 mackerel as some will die and it is surprising how many will get picked off the hooks without hooking up to a predator. TACKLE & RIG You need to have a 15-24kg rod and reel set, preferably a lever-drag reel is best as you can set a light drag when the kingie takes the livie and push up the drag lever to set the hook. I use a Shimano Tynos 30 and Kilwell 15-24kg roller tipped rod, spooled with 24kg braid and 80-120lb mono leader. Braid lets you keep in better contact with your live bait and the heavy mono leader is crucial as it helps prevent bust offs when the kingfish heads for cover in the reef or foul. Use a running rig with a 2-4oz ball or egg shaped sinker sitting above the swivel, which is then attached with a long 8-10ft supple trace of 80-120lb mono, with a 4/0-7/0 circle hook on the end.

D6-400 DPH is here – the world’s most powerful Diesel Sterndrive. The compressor- and turbo-charged 5.5 liter engine delivers a massive 400 hp and unparalleled torque, transformed into sparkling acceleration by the refined Duoprop drive. Of course, it’s available with plenty of smart features such as Joystick Docking, Powertrim Assistant and Cruise Control. All at your fingertips.

This photo illustrates the long trace needed when live baiting, with the large egg sinker shown sitting above the swivel.

We call it easy boating.

Bevan Mills poses with his fish that took a live bait over a reef at 90m.

Sometimes you will need to use a smaller 4/0 circle hook if your live baits are small, this helps keep them alive as larger hooks are too heavy and they struggle to swim and die. These 4/0 circle hooks are surprisingly strong and good brands to consider are; Black Magic, Gamakatsu and Owner. Make sure you have at least 80lb-120lb supple mono for leader, this is better for tying your knots and you need it to prevent bust offs. TACTICS Going wide to fish in deeper water from 70-150m, you are looking for structure such as reefs, pins, wrecks or foul where bait schools gather and kingfish like to hunt. A good sounder is key, as you are searching to find where the kingfish are holding over the reef. The edges are usually the best places to start and once in position, drop your live bait down to the bottom and retrieve several metres back so the livie is up off the bottom. Drift through your mark/structure slowly, the skipper needs to reverse when needed to keep the line vertical and always watching the sounder to identify the drop offs or edge of the structure. Often the kingfish will be well up off the bottom, so use the sounder to identify what depth and then you can use the coloured braid depth breaks to put the livie in the zone. Eg, if your braid is coloured in 10m

sections and the kingfish are holding over a reef at 60m, you need to count 6 colour changes of braid. Your live bait will start to get nervous when it gets attention, you will notice the rod dipping and the line twitching. Once the weight starts to come on more, push the drag up and start winding. The circle hook will do its job and hopefully the hook will be embedded in the corner of the kingfish’s mouth. Don’t be surprised how many livies manage to get removed off the hook by kingfish, it may take a few livies before success. But at least you know they are producing the bites.

is then connected straight to the solid, hook ring on the jig. The best knots for tying leader to the braid is the PR Knot or FG Knot, Google these online to show you as there are numerous videos available. Take a selection of different weights and colours, from 200gm – 400gm jigs. Weight is more important than colour, on calm days with little current you can use lighter 200-250gm jigs. If there are stronger winds causing the boat to drift more quickly or there is more current, then heavier 300400gm jigs are best.

JIGGING TACKLE Our other approach in deeper water is to jig for kingfish. Mechanical jigging with large jigs is very effective on kingfish as their predatory nature means they will chase down fast moving lures. For this we need to switch to a different rod and reel set. A typical jigging rod is shorter and very strong, matched with either a highspeed ratio overhead reel or a spin reel that can hold 250-300m of 24-37kg braid. Braid is crucial as you need to keep in direct contact with the jig and use them vertically, and braid has no stretch. The reels also need to have good drags, offering at least 10-12kg of drag to help put the hurt on big kingfish. Again, you will need to tie an 80lb-120lb mono leader of approximately 10-15ft which

Jigs predominately hook-up in the mouth, this is good for releasing fish in better condition.

Jigging over deep water reefs is very effective. This 37kg Accurate and Synit Rod set is very strong and can put considerable drag on fish, you need this stopping power to prevent bust offs.

Heavy 200-400gm jigs can damage your rod guides when moving in the boat. It pays to place them in the rod holder as shown.

TACTICS Again, when fishing deeper water over 70m+, you are looking for the same structure such as reefs, pins, or foul where kingfish like to hunt. Use the sounder to locate where the kingfish are holding over the mark, the skipper will need to keep you right above it. Drop your jig down to the bottom and crank it back up using a quick half turn of the reel handle and a short lift on the rod at the same time. This makes the jig stall and jinx on its way up, mimicking an injured bait fish. It is an awkward style at first until you get into a good rhythm, but a lot of first time jiggers do well as their erratic style works. As when live baiting, often the kingfish are well up off the bottom, so again use the sounder to identify what depth and use your coloured braid depth breaks to drop the jig to where the kings are. Eg, if the bottom is 130m and the kingfish sign is at 70m, you need to count 7 colour changes of braid. This means you are saving time and energy by not going all the way to the bottom! Jigging is a fun and more active method of fishing for kingfish, but combined with live baiting and actively fishing in deeper water, you will see your kingfish catches increase. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

BOAT TEST KIWI-KRAFT 520 FISHERMAN Invercargill built Kiwi Kraft, has been given a major market boost. While the Kiwi Kraft has always been at the forefront of pontoon boat manufacturing, Kiwi wanted to take it further. Ian Coutts, Sales Manager for Boat City explained that while they loved the Kiwi Kraft brand and so did their customers, they felt they need to get more involved with the design to better reflect what their customers were asking for. In close cooperation with builder and designer Rodney Harris they have now come up with a whole new look. “We call them our New Generation models and so far we have released three, the 520 Fisherman, 590 HT and the 620HT and have more to follow”, says Ian. He adds that the boats don’t only look more modern and stylish, the internal spaces have been better utilised and all the while not changing anything about the hull’s running surfaces. In 1988 Rodney Harris sold his first Kiwi Kraft aluminium pontoon boat and since then 1000s more. While initial orders were all around the Southland area, the word soon spread north and it wasn’t long before Kiwi Kraft boats were appearing throughout the country. Roll on nearly 30 years and this iconic Kiwi brand has established a strong following not only in New Zealand but also in Australia and the Pacific Islands. The range is extensive from open dinghies and hardtops, runabouts and cabins, and all share the same ethical standard for firstclass workmanship and attention to detail. However while quality, strength and a superior build quality is the catch cry of every Kiwi Kraft, just how good the boat performs on the water carries equal respect. I have driven a number of Kiwi Kraft models over the years and have always stated, that size for size, the Kiwi Kraft is one of the best riding alloy pontoon boats on the market. The hulls are based on what the company call, Hush Technology or simply Hush Tech. Is this any different to any other alloy pontoon boat? Well yes, it is and while it’s not radical, it is innovative and very efficient. The traditional round tube shape with soft chines are used to trap air between the sponson and the hull, contribute to the smooth ride. The variable deadrise that runs from the fine bow entry

The 520 Fisherman comes with walk around side decks.

to 18 deg at the transom helps with the soft, dry ride and at rest or underway, the 520 is still a very stable boat. Twin planing strakes that run the full length of the hull assist in the lift, leading to a low planning speed. The strakes also give the Kiwi-Kraft boats better grip and stability on the turns and in following seas. My experience driving the 520 in choppy waters of Plimmerton Beach certainly brought out the best in the boat and while the 520 is rated for up to 115hp, a 4 stroke 60hp CT would be more than adequate. The extra weight of the Mercury 90hp 4 stroke does assist in the balance and trim of the boat, pushing the 520 hard out in choppy water, the 90hp is perfect. The 90hp Mercury, running an 18”Vengeance gave the 520 a top end speed of 38 knots, with a fuel burn of a

very respectable 30 lph. Drop that back to a cruise of around 24 knots @ 4500 rpm and the fuel gauge stops around 22 lph. At that speed and based on a 45-litre tote tank, the 520 would have a range of around 40 nm. The 520 – in fact, all Kiwi Kraft- has positive buoyancy, making it virtually unsinkable, even when full of water and contingent of passengers. This is achieved by a system of pontoons between the hull and the floor. Each of these pontoons contains up to nine compartments, depending on the model and is tested to 5 PSI during construction. While the hulls are built to CPC standards, they are also made to MSA and pass all their rigid flotation requirements.

NEW GENERATION While the 520 is essentially a replacement

for the hugely popular 550, a lot has been changed. The big difference is the new model is bigger all round. The 520 is 5.65m overall, compared to 5.50m for the 550. However, while the external beam is, in fact, 20mm narrower in the new 520, it’s the internal beam that has gained considerably. “We have had a lot of customer feedback that they would like to see more beam in the boats, especially in the cockpit, so that was one of the first things we looked at when developing the new generation models”, says Ian. The internal beam in the cockpit of the 520 is now 1610mm, 50mm, or close to 2” wider than the 550 it replaces. Might not sound a lot, but it has been well utilised and is quite noticeable. The cockpit sole is flat, right across to the tubes, which have been squared off, to give maximum useable deck

space. Also, the 520 has wider side shelves, recessed into the pontoon. These come with a high upstand, so things don’t fall out and a pair of rod racks either side. The side decks are wider, the coaming height higher (800mm) and they come standard with two-rod holders per side. Also visually, the 550 and 520 are nothing alike, with the new model one of the first with the new generation stylish tube shape. “We looked at the traditional round tubes and felt we needed to give the boats a more elegant and modern look above the waterline, while still retaining that round pontoon shape underneath”, says Ian. The transom design has also come in for special attention and follows some of the ideas used on the Aqualine boats, a sister brand to Kiwi Kraft. The transom has been

moved further aft, the cockpit is longer and the walk through transom is now a standard feature on all Kiwi Kraft. If you want to add an optional live bait tank that goes in under the step through. Twin transom lockers look after any batteries and provide extra storage. Our 520 came with a single 45-litre tote tank, instead of two 22 litre totes and you also have the option of fitting an underfloor 150-litre tank. The large bait board is another standard item with the 520 and again you can upgrade that to a custom made Kiwi Kraft bait station complete with tackle drawer. I liked the full-width aft boarding platform that allows you to walk around the engine. Attention to detail extends right down to the clean way all the engine cables and fuel line have been routed.

Twin hatches open to give access to the bow.

Another feature of all Kiwi Kraft is the splash back recess across the transom, which is designed to help keep the water out of the cockpit when backing up or retrieving your boat in surf. If you are going to create a boat for fishing, then you must offer an uncluttered cockpit. Nothing worse than being all blocked up with seating. So what Kiwi Kraft have done is provided a sliding seat, which can be placed anywhere from behind the twin pedestal forward seats to the transom. If there’s only you or another mate fishing, then you can pull it out and leave it at home. Not unique to Kiwi Kraft, but a great feature on a smaller alloy boat. Tube matting on the cheque plate flooring is optional.

BOW BINS Standard seating is a pair of gasoperated pedestals complete with plastic seats (cushions are extra), with full swivelling and sliding capabilities. For the passenger, there’s a large wrap around alloy handle and both seats have foot rests with recesses for small bags. The dash of the 520 has also been given a revamp, with a much bigger area to handle large MFDs and an eyebrow to help eliminate some of the glare. Imitation carbon fibre

covering would be a good option to consider. Another very cool new design feature on the 520 is the bow access, achieved with a double folding system. Firstly the centre of the screen folds open and then the So Pac deck hatch is also hinged to lift out of the way. This allows you easy access to the deep anchor locker, which in a lot of Kiwi Kraft these days is fitted with a drum winch. Obviously, there’s not enough room under the foredeck for any berths, so Kiwi Kraft has come up with a couple of vinyl gear bags, which keeps everything dry and off the floor.

INSTANT SUCCESS Released four months ago, Ian says that the new generation 520 Fisherman has been a great seller. You can get one on the water under $40,000 for the entire B/M/T package, which is an excellent price for a boat of this size and quality. Plus the 520 Fisherman is loaded with standard items that most alloy boat brands list in their options list. If you liked the 550, then you’ll love the 520. Kiwi Kraft has listened to their customers who wanted an increase in internal space but with no sacrifice of the ride. With the 520 Fisherman, I score them 10 out of 10.

CRA TER R E Z LA VEMAS DI

When the Lazercraft brand re-launched onto the market a couple of years ago, we tested their 580 GT Sport model and have since tested their 640 model as well as their new 650 Hardtop. (See the next issue of AB for a full review). As with Lazercrafts of the past, we’ve been rapt with just how good these new generation boats are. The 580 Divemaster isn’t an all-new model to the Lazercraft line-up. Longtime Lazercraft dealer, Bay Of Islands Marine sold high numbers of the Divemaster model during the 90’s, with the configuration being perfect for the ‘blokey’ type who wanted a capable fishing and dive boat to explore the expansive waters of the Bay of Islands. The new look 580 Divemaster is largely based on the same hull as the 580 GT Sport, albeit with a few minor tweaks. Plus it is now an all aluminium construction, where the GT Sport model featured a fibreglass top deck.

Divers and fishermen will love the open and functional layout.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS The 580 Divemaster is all about functionality. Aft there are two sizeable boarding platforms, both with handrails to aid in re-entering the boat from the water. In the starboard corner, there is a considerable drop down T-style boarding ladder that divers will love. Cockpit access is easy via a walk through that comes complete with a removable infill. The transom is fairly sizeable, and there is large storage space in either corner, big enough to accommodate a large cooler bin. There are two hatches built into the transom to accommodate miscellaneous items, with further storage below that via a large hinged hatch. There is also a live bait tank complete with a viewing window in the port corner, plus a ski pole, which can also be converted to accommodate a bait board. Side shelf storage on either side of the cockpit will handle long rods and any other lengthy items you may have, and is big

enough to accommodate dive bottles. The coamings are finished with Ultralon Surfgrip decking, which also extends to the boarding platform and across the transom. The forward cabin consists of a single bunk to the port side with limited storage underneath, while there is room to store other items on the floor. The seating configuration is in the form of two upholstered, adjustable pedestal seats mounted on bases with storage underneath. Between the two seats is a large underfloor storage locker that is big enough to hold a couple of dive bottles. The dash area is neat and tidy. Engine instruments and switches are cleanly mounted into the aluminium dash as well as a Garmin MFD display, and a VHF fitted below. Anchoring is done from the helm via a Maxwell auto capstan. Up on the foredeck is a large open area that could be used for casting soft baits. Though there is access around the side to the foredeck, I’d like to see the spray

dodger split to provide a walk through to the foredeck; a step up would also be a great feature. As this is the first 580 Divemaster out of the Lazercraft factory, I understand that there will be a few changes made to hull #2 and that a split spray dodger is being considered. Though it wasn’t fitted at the time of the test, a rocket launcher and bimini top are going to be added.

POWER DOWN Our test boat was powered by a Yamaha 115hp four-stroke outboard, swinging a 16” stainless steel propeller. Water conditions during our test day were perfect for boat testing, fairly choppy, with a stiff breeze running across Auckland’s inner harbour, the kind of conditions you usually face on

your return trip to the boat ramp after a day on the water. The 580 Divemaster performed well with the 115hp four-stroke, and achieved 34 knots at 6000rpm, with a maximum fuel burn of 40L/H. 4000rpm achieved a comfortable cruise of around 20 knots using 17.7L/H. Our test day saw us with little extra gear, two adult passengers and around 80L of fuel. The Yamaha 115hp fourstroke outboard was the ideal match for the 580 hull. It gave plenty of torque and grunt when you needed it and returned healthy fuel numbers. If you were to use the 580 as a serious dive boat and haul a lot of gear, you might want to opt for the more powerful 130hp engine or even the maximum rated 150hp. Lazercrafts traditionally don’t mind a lot of horsepower, so it could

61

easily handle the bigger engine. Like other Lazercraft’s I’ve been on, the 580 Divemaster was mega on the water. In the choppy conditions, it seemed to enjoy a reasonable amount of trim and a good dose of throttle to get us up and skipping over the top of the chop. Three of us all drove the boat on our test day, two of us for the first time, and we were all impressed with the performance the boat.

DODGE ME The spray dodger configuration isn’t something we see too often on boats. Many manufacturers have done them in the past, and there are some builders who offer the configuration on some of their models. How a spray dodger works, is that the lip on the top edge of the all aluminium

The solid alloy dodger is quite high, and some might struggle to peer over it when seated to drive. For maximum visibility, I elected to stand to drive. Underway, we remained dry, and the spray dodger seemed to work well diverting the wind-up and out of our faces. At rest, we tested the stability, and with two of us to one side, the boat remained very stable. As tested, this package was $64,995 as tested and has a lot of great features

When I got to the boat ramp to test the 580 Divemaster, all I was told was that it was a new dive boat from Lazercraft. Admittedly, when it arrived on the trailer I did think to myself it was a bit different, and I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the aesthetics. However, having spent a few hours aboard the 580 Divemaster, and photographing it, I was completely sold. A fantastically functional boat with exceptional on the water performance.

Negotiating the road through the Andes mountain range.

A world away from our homes In New Zealand and Australia, four purpose built CWF Hamilton & Co. Ltd 141 alloy jet boats arrive in Puerto Aisen Patagonia/Southern Chile, having left Christchurch New Zealand three months earlier. The 4.5m (14.7 feet long) boats feature 10mm high tensile aluminum bottoms, HJ 212 water jets propelled by Chevrolet 383 cubic inch (6.3 liters) V8 motors. An experienced group of some twenty Jet boat adventurers, still fresh from past expeditions in Africa and the Himalayas, meet up in Coihaique to check over the equipment and boats transported in a single purpose built 40 foot sea container. This is to be a challenging and difficult expedition, a large proportion of which is venturing into unknown rivers and roads only recently constructed as far 50 deg South. Lower Patagonia is a rugged area where glaciers and volcanoes are spectacular, active and very dangerous.

We were forced to manufacture our own tow bars at a local workshop, no mean feat as this far south raw materials and welding equipment is almost impossible to source. After a days work using light steel box section, concrete reinforcing bar and timber bolt fasteners we were ready to hit the road. Ahead of us the mountainous topography of Chile and the baron desert plains of Argentina. Traveling south to our first launching we had to cross sections of the Andes in some very spectacular and steep country, the roads were very rough and by days end nearly all trailers had suffered significant damage. Most had lost their stanchion poles and all but

Corrosion Control SALT REMOVING TREATMENT Salt-away is a must for engine flushing, washing boats, trailers, trailer brakes, fishing and dive gear

The local modes of transport has not changed in hundreds of years.

WARNING! 9 out of 10 engines fail from salt corrosion. ACT NOW and protect your valuable boat, engine, trailer, fishing and dive gear. Salt-Away will protect aluminium castings and water jackets. Stop engines from rusting (yes, aluminium corrodes). A regular flushing program for your engine with Salt-Away (mixing unit recommended) will prevent corrosion and decrease metal deterioration by eliminating build-up of rust in water passage ways. Flush your engine for 30 seconds after every use with our mixing unit, you can even use salt water! Salt-Away super concentrate breaks down and removes salt build-up with repeated use and is the most concentrated salt removing product available. Just 90 mls will flush your engine and remove salt from your 7 metre boat, trailer and trailer brakes.

one had broken trailer springs which were replaced with spares at the road side, this was to set the tone for the rest of our road travel in the coming weeks. The following day we were told a short 30 minute drive from our overnight accommodation at Cochrane to the Baker River would be ‘easy’, however this took 4 hours with more trailer springs broken, our steel trailer mud guards had now fatigued and disappeared, while a spring hanger had to be repaired, at this rate we would run out of spares before our second days boating! The road was through heavy wet forest in parts and our first launching was at an idyllic confluence with the Baker River, huge sheer ice capped mountains in the background set a story book scene. Upon arrival we heard a large roar and over the next 10 minutes witnessed a large avalanche, the result of a huge overhang collapsing and traveling many kilometers almost down to the river.

RUNNING REPAIRS We were soon distracted having discovered that two boats had suffered split fuel tanks in at least 6 places. The tanks were removed from the boats and repaired on the spot with “two part putty” and epoxy bandages. Patagonia was certainly sending us a clear signal of how tough she can be and we were not even on the water yet. Following repairs 135km’s was covered upstream through high country and moderate white water, a few larger difficult rapids were negotiated before we headed back down stream. We beached at Tortel, a small remote fishing and logging village clinging to a rocky outcrop, flanked by dark bleak mountains, fjords and glaciers; a rugged place and sure to be bitterly cold and isolated in winter. Frenchman and Mt Everest Veteran Philippe Reuter, who has lived in Chile for some 20 years, joined us for a few days and provided a

great deal of local knowledge and history. We departed Tortel early for an hour long run up stream on the Baker River back to the trailers, a couple of boats had a look up a clear running creek with hope of reaching a moraine lake seen on the map, however time caught up with us and had to turn about. With all boats back on trailers we headed up the dirt road to refuel 4 hours away, however one 4x4 with boat in tow clipped an on coming truck almost ‘head on’ nearly sending the other vehicle down an sheer embankment. The back wheel of our vehicle was driven into the rear wheel arch and body, the axle torn off the springs whilst the drive shaft was unceremoniously pulled from the gear box. After a couple of hours the suspension was patched back up massaging springs and brackets with the 14lb sledge hammer, U-bolts and springs pieced back together with fencing wire and bearings re installed. The other vehicle more worse for wear with the front end suspension destroyed was retrieved from its precarious situation and we were on the road again.

BLUE SKIES AND GLACIERS After some rest we launched into another section of the Baker River and boated down to our camp at Balsa Colonia through some very large beautiful valley systems, enjoying perfect weather and clear blue skies, this allowed us to view the many glaciers and peaks in the area. After a big cookout around the camp fire we headed for the Glacier Lake Cachet Dos via the Rio Colonia, a confluence only a few km’s away. The Rio Colonia almost soup like in consistency such was the huge amount of glacial debris suspended in the water, this would be sure to inflict high amounts of wear on the jet units. Braided on the lower sections, heavily wooded midway up and steep towards the top this river made its way through massive glacial carved valleys. A few boats had some very big hits in the milky violent white water, some boats significantly damaging their transoms and another boat close to sinking as the rear corner was pushed under water. Rather than cause more damage or lose a boat we decided to abandon our trek up to the glacier and head back. The trip back to the trailers had us boating under hanging glaciers

with spectacular blue skies and with some spare time and fuel we explored a gin clear side stream. We spent a relaxing night in the Green Baker lodge with a huge feast of mutton cooked on an open fire, then on the road at 5am to Coyhaique to repair the trailers, minor tow bar welding, weld a broken engine mount and fix the numerous fuel tank leaks. The tanks were removed for repair and refitted again; prior to this we had been running some boats directly from fuel jerry cans. This area was the only place in southern Chile to have any sort of engineering work done, so we took full advantage before we headed north into even more remote areas of Chile and ultimately Argentina. Chile has certainly thrown all challenges imaginable at us, rewarding none the less with perfect weather and truly spectacular countryside. With spares almost completely depleted we face tough days ahead making our way over the Andes to the desert plains of Argentina.

If your passion is spearfishing, but you love your fishing and also family boating, then having a purpose built boat makes sense. Barry Thompson checks out one man’s answer to getting the perfect boat.

Allie is Paul Spence’s 16th boat and was custom designed for him by Mt Maunganui -based Hall Marine Design and built in Hamilton by Everyman Boats. At 11m overall, this is the biggest boat ever built by Everyman Boats and while it follows similar lines to their ‘smaller’ 9-10m models, it is in fact very much a personalised product built to exacting standards required by the owner. Having had alloy boats before, Paul was adamant that his new Everyman had to be built extra strong and so chose 8mm bottom plate over the standard 6m, and 5mm sides. The

73

result is a very stiff boat on the water and one that Paul says will handle anything. He also didn’t want a painted hull, something that is now almost the norm on large alloy boats. “That’s just another thing has to be looked after and as I use the boat for fishing and diving I didn’t want the extra worry of maintaining a pristine finish”. Since launching the boat in early 2016, he and wife Sandy have made numerous diving and fishing trips to Great Barrier Island and the Mercury Islands. Paul is a well-known Kiwi spearo and has not only represented New Zealand overseas but was also

a regular on the local spearfishing circuit. Today it’s more about doing his own thing, but his love of spearfishing is still as high. “Although I am no longer competing like I used to, my passion is still spearfishing, so I was looking for a boat that would suit not only my sport but also be suitable for fishing and the occasional family day out or weekend away”, says Paul. One request was for six berths, which has been achieved with the forward section split into four bunks and the dining table in the saloon dropping to a generous size double. The 2.3m long upper and lower berths are part of the optional layout and make up the forward accommodation area. However, this whole space can be configured quite differently being a custom design. There is huge storage space under the lower berths, as well as handy shelves beside each upper berth. The boat also had to have an external toilet and shower compartment. “I would never have a head/shower inside as no matter what you do they smell and it’s also not that practical in a boat this size, as it takes up space. The advantage of having it outside is that we were able to design a bigger than

average shower space and there’s room to move around and wash all your bits”. There is a very simple holding tank built in under the toilet, which is gravity flushed overboard by simply opening a gate valve. No pumps to go wrong or clog up. Very simple and very effective. There was also a question of the overall size of the boat and although he already had a 15m marina at Gulf Harbour, Paul was looking for something around 10.5m with a wide beam. In close collaboration with the designer and builder, Paul settled on a boat of 10.8m LOH and 11m LOA, with a beam of 3.07m, deadrise of 18 deg and full load displacement of about 4500 kgs. “It’s a big, solid boat and I love it,” says Paul.

DIESEL OR OUTBOARD After sorting out all his special needs with builder Russell Spiers, it was then time to make a power choice. The option was simple, single diesel sterndrive or twin outboards. Not wanting to have a stern leg hanging in the water all the time, meant that the diesel sterndrive option was out. Paul also liked the simplicity of twin outboards

and the fact he had the extra safety factor of two engines. “I had priced a sterndrive at around $120,000, but then when I looked at the twin outboard option, I realised just how much more cost effective the outboards were. “Not only did I spend nearly half for the two engines, but I also didn’t have to sacrifice any space in the cockpit, plus the transom layout was perfect for diving with the space available between the two engines.” says Paul. He adds that the twin Honda 250s have proven incredibly economical and he is averaging around 55 lph for both engines @ 22 knots. Top speed is more than 40 knots, but Paul says he rarely ever goes there. Allie carries 950 litres of fuel and 400 litres of water, so the cruising range is extensive. “It’s 35nm from Gulf Harbour to Great Barrier and on a good day we get there in just over an hour and a half….as long as we don’t stop for a fish under the birds on the way”. Another plus for the outboards was they can be trimmed out of the water when

the boat is sitting on the marina and apart from maybe antifouling the legs, the maintenance is minimal. However, Paul decided to go one step better and now has the boat sitting on an Air Berth, so the entire boat and engines are well free of the salt water. No antifouling, no corrosion and no electrolysis issues. “Initially I wasn’t going to go to the expense of a dry berth but after I saw the Air Berth in action and realised the potential of it, I knew I had to have one”, says Paul. Driving on and off is an effortless task and only requires a few minutes of pumping air in our out of the two huge tubes. When we arrived at the marina to take the boat out for day’s fishing and diving, the first thing Paul did was hit the pump-out switch on the Air Berth control. By the time we had loaded the fishing and dive gear, plus a few cold ones, the boat was sitting in the water ready to go. It was much the same when we got back. It also meant we were able to give the hull a total fresh water clean and also flush the engines.

The wheelhouse is cosy, with a functional layout.

READY FOR THE CRAYS The layout of Allie is very much what Paul wanted and the builder says that he can configure that to suit the client. With Paul’s passion for diving, one of the first things required was easy water access. This has been achieved with a very wide opening between the engines and a significant drop down ladder that can be used even with full SCUBA gear. The full boarding platform is also a perfect place to toss your gear or your bag of bugs when you come back from a dive. There’s also a deep wet locker so you can stow your catch. The same wide access between the engines is carried through to the transom opening, which comes with a drop-in alloy panel, for extra safety if you have small children aboard. Central in the 7.5 sqm cockpit is an island bait station, with open storage under for buckets, tackle boxes and whatever you like to have close at hand when fishing. While this was designed primarily as bait prep area, Paul says that they also use it as

an afternoon and evening dining table and sit on the wide coamings rather than have additional seating. Most of the filleting is on either of the wooden boards across the transom. The four side trays (2 aside) are extra long and means you can stow the longest rods and spearguns, and there’s still coaming rod holders as well as a rocket launcher on the cabin top. The wheelhouse roof not only supports the Southern Pacific Puffin tender and inflatable paddleboard but also has a 150-watt solar panel, which provides enough power to run the fridge constantly. Running central under the cockpit sole (covered with non-skid tube matting) is another massive aft wet locker, with the fuel tank and water tanks forward. The only seating in the cockpit is a cushion on the starboard side LPG bottle locker, and there’s always the top of the ice box. A sunshade overhead adds some extra all-weather protection to the forward cockpit area and isn’t so far back that it gets in the way of your rods.

Easy access for divers between the engines.

COSY WHEELHOUSE While Paul was happy to leave the cockpit and external areas reasonably spartan, apart from the false teak decking on the coamings, the interior has been given an all-over fabric finish. It’s got a warm and cosy feel to it and on the number of trips I have had on the boat, it never feels cramped, even with 4-5 people aboard. An Eberspacher heater would be a nice addition for the winter boating. The port side table has been designed to comfortably seat four for a meal or playing cards in the evening. A pair of Hi-Tech adjustable pedestals allow you to drop the table down and with the addition of a couple of squabs, you have a 2.2m long double berth. There is four long pull out drawers beneath the raised dinette floor, plus a couple of huge storage bins under the wheelhouse sole. Add to this the room available under the dinette seats and there is plenty. While the galley is reasonably basic, with a two burner hob and stove, it is more than adequate and according to Paul, it’s all they need when away overnighting. The Formica benchtop provides plenty of servery space and the drawers beneath the storage. The helm in Allie has been fitted out with a Simrad 16” MFD, Simrad AP20 autopilot and Garmin engine monitoring. A Simrad RS12 VHF and Fusion MSAV750 are mounted overhead. “It’s a great driving position, with good vision all around and the helm seat has proven very comfortable on our trips out to Great Barrier”, says Paul. Paul says that he has been extremely happy with the boat and wouldn’t change a thing. It’s suitable to fish 4-6 anglers or take the same number of divers, although if Paul is overnighting, he restricts that to four. There have been plenty of big snapper and crays coming aboard and that’s not likely to stop anytime soon. ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

A BUYERS GUIDE

3.5M - 6M TILLER STEER BOATS

Getting a GRIP Alloy tiller steer boats are unpretentious, efficient and make great tenders or fishing platforms. We take a pictorial look at some of the production models available in New Zealand from 3.5m through to 6m.

While hardtops have become the most popular new mode of alloy boat design, there are still those whose boating needs are a lot less both in size and cost. The first alloy boats from builders such as Fyran, Parkercraft, Starcraft and De Haviland were all tiller steer. Kiwi boaties were brought up on Parkercraft 12s and 14s and there are still many thousands sitting around in holiday homes, that are still being used. Centre consoles and runabouts came in a lot later and cabin boats and hardtops followed. Tiller steer dinghies were and still are an excellent introduction to boating. Over the years as the market changed and new styles were introduced the number of manufacturers offering small tiller steer dinghies dropped away. The money was in the larger boats and when companies like Fyran decided to do a run of 12s, they built big batches, like 100 plus at a time to make production more cost efficient. For a while it looked like RIBs would take over completely from the small alloy dinghy and while this has certainly been the case when it comes to yacht and launch tenders,

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

the small alloy tiller steer tinnie is again a popular option, especially for fishing. While you can still buy very basic tiller steer dinghies around 4m, there are now a lot more styles and as aluminium boats are so adaptable, you can just about have any size as a tiller steer. Most outboard manufacturers provide tiller steer kits right through to their 200 hp plus models, so your next tiller steer boat is only restricted by your imagination. However, if you are looking at the production models, offered by local builders, the range consists of around 50 from Kiwi builders and almost as many from Australian builders Quintrex and Savage. Both brands are available in New Zealand through local dealers. Sizes start at around 3m and go right through to 6m, with a huge number in the 4.1m to 4.6m range. Most have 3mm or 4mm hull bottoms and are available as either a conventional monohull, pontoon and even catamaran. Check out our Buyers Guide for models available on the local market from both Kiwi and Australian manufacturers.

BOAT TEST COMMANDO SCOUT 3.9

NEW BREED The 3.9m Scout is the latest model to be released by the new owners of Commando Boats, and while unashamedly aimed at the niche rowing market, it should prove very popular with inshore fisherman.

BOAT TEST COMMANDO SCOUT 3.9

When Phillip Barrack brought the established Auckland based Commando Boats, it heralded a new era for this hugely successful brand. Started 24 years ago by Bruce DeBaugh, Commando Boats has been at the forefront of aluminium boat building in New Zealand and while maybe not one of the high production players, the brand has established an enviable reputation, particularly in the commercial market. If you’ve seen an outboard powered barge or rubbish boat on Auckland Harbour, chances are it was built by Commando Boats. New owner Phillip still plans to continue that tradition but is also keen to develop new markets. Being an enthusiastic supporter of rowing, he could see a niche market for support tenders. “The idea behind the 3.9mm Scout was to develop an entirely new small boat package that was purpose designed for the rowing support and coaching market”, says Phillip. The Commando 3.9m Scout is based on the long discontinued Commando 12 but with a wider beam, longer LOA and a higher freeboard. Phillip was looking for a sturdy, strong and stable platform that offered a low wake attitude and the necessary speed to keep up with the fastest of skiffs. It seems he has achieved all he wanted in the 3.9m Scout.

Ray Bryant of Bryant Marine, in Half Moon Bay, was given the task of rigging the first boat just before me taking it out for a run on the Tamaki River. Firstly this is a calm water boat and isn’t designed to be anything else. Overall length is 3.9m, with a beam of 1.5m and a shallow `3 degree deadrise. Construction is a 3mm bottom and 2.0mm sides all pressed at the Commando factory. A wide, downturned chine and double spray strakes either side help to create a dry boat and soften the ride. One of the necessities for the rowing community was the ability to be able to stand up when running alongside a skiff. The Commando 3.9m Scout can be built with a full length or half length flat chequer plate floor, something that a lot of boats this size don’t offer.

LIKE IT USED TO BE While the Commando 3.9m Scout is essentially targeted at the rowing support market, it is also equally suited to inshore sheltered water fishing. It’s the type of light, easy to handle, low powered open runabout that has been very much part of the Kiwi boating lifestyle since the first Parkercraft 12 was released over 50 years ago. The standard boat comes with twin bench seats with built-in inflation tucked under,

with a third bench seat option. This allows you to configure the boat to suit your needs. If you are into your fishing, then I would suggest the two bench seat option more suitable. Our boat had the three seat option plus a 300mm Perspex screen. The standard boat comes with a 300mm high alloy solid screen, which acts as both a windbreak and spray deflector. The Perspex screen also makes a good anchor point for a canopy and allows you to still see through the screen when driving. I made the comment that it looked like you could forward mount the steering, but Ray was quick to point out that the hull is too narrow in the forward sections to accommodate that much weight, without running bow down. “We can totally reconfigure the layout and fit a centre console, which still leaves plenty of useable space around the boat and keeps the weight balance where if should be”, says Ray. There is a small storage space under the foredeck to keep the anchor, but if you prefer, Commando Boats can make an open deck anchor locker. Old story, being alloy it’s amazing what can be altered. Steering is done by tiller from the rear seat and that seems to work fine. Power options are up to 20hp. Our power for the test was a Mercury Pro Kicker 15, a 2S, electric

Boat Supplied by: Ray Bryant Marine Ph +64 9 537 0114, raybryant@xtra.co.nz start engine with a tiller option. This gave a top speed of 36 km/h. The Pro Kicker differs from the standard Mercury 15, through having power trim and tilt, electric start, a bigger gearbox and a taller gear ratio. Essentially it’s an engine design to push weight at slow speeds, with good low down torque. Ideal engine for the rowing community, where speed is not essential…well for the support boat that is! There is space aft of the rear bench seat for a 25-litre tote tank and battery, on

dedicated raised trays, or if you’re running a manual engine, room for two tote tanks. Not that I would suggest you would need them as the Mercury 15 will go a long way on 25 litres. When you are aiming a boat at club level, there is always a question of costs. Commando Boats have managed to put the boat together with a $5500 (inc GST) price tag and that relates back to $15000 $17000 for a boat, motor and alloy trailer total package such as we tested.

BOAT TEST NULINE 45 DG

EMPHASIS ON QUALITY Nuline is one of the newest names in the alloy boat market and has been developed as a range of affordable, entry level boats with an emphasis on quality.

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #10

86

The Nuline range is the result of the owners of Woodbine Marine seeing the need for some new product in the small boat market. With the demise of the Fyran brand, Sam Harvey, MD of Woodbine Marine says they were left with a void in their range that needed to be addressed. Sam explains; “We could see a real gap in the market and from experience knew what was needed in the way of boat sizes and styles to fill it. The Nuline range was born and our plans are to develop and nurture it as the market and our customers dictate”. Nuline was designed as a range of affordable, quality built, boats with custom layouts that have a bent towards fishing, diving and general family boating. Currently, the range comprises two hull sizes; the 4.5m 45 and the 4.8m 48, with both available with an open dinghy layout, runabout/cuddy or side/centre consoles. The hulls are identical, apart from the larger model being 300mm longer. Both are construction with a 4mm hull and 3mm sides, plus a 4mm chequer plate floor and what looks like a more than the average number of stringers. With a background in building commercial boats, the builders of the Nuline range for Woodbine Marine, have carried on that same requirement for

a commercial grade toughness but with a recreational quality finish. It certainly shows great kiwi workmanship. While there may only be 300mm difference between the boats, the feeling on water is quite different, with the 480 especially good in the more choppy water. Might have also had something to do with the centre console and extra weight which can certainly help the ride and handling. Our experience on the Tamaki River with a 48 centre console and a 45 DG tiller steer probably wasn’t enough to really test the two boats to the max, but they both felt solid and predictable and very easily driven with the moderate horsepower. The standard 45 DG tiller steer dinghy offers seating for four, with two aft corner seats and two forward cushions on alloy frames, with deck mounted alloy grab handles. If the seats were hinged they could be dropped out of the way when fishing. The seating up forward is a little different style to most, but being an alloy boat, it’s also very changeable so you can have what you like. The wide side decks come with four flush mount rod holders, plus there are a boarding platform and well-placed handrails for you and your passengers. A drop down boarding ladder

87

is optional. The chequer plate floor has natural buoyancy under, so there is plenty of flotation in the boat. While our boat had a single level floor, you could have a raised casting deck built into the bow area, which would also double as a big dry storage area. The tote tank can be tucked under the port side seat and there is room for a second one under the driver’s seat. This area can be used for a battery if you have an electric start outboard. However, one tote tank is probably going to be all you will need for a day’s boating. I wouldn’t image that a 30hp would use much more than 8-9 lph flat out and half of that cruising, so 25 litres is going to give you plenty of time on the water. Storage is available in 2m long side trays and a locker under the foredeck. This can be altered to include a solid hatch or a soft vinyl curtain. The 45 DG comes with an open anchor locker and if you delete one of the bow rails you could easily fit a Minn Kota. If you like the idea of an auto anchoring system, then I suggest a small drum winch would be ideal and would slot very neatly into the locker. There is plenty of space on the lower shelf for a battery to run both a Minn Kota and a winch.

Our boat had an optional side mounted bait board, which can be fitted anywhere you like on the boat thanks to the Railblaza mounts. Power options are obviously outboard only, with a choice of 2 stroke or 4 stroke engines from 25-40hp. Our boat was running an Evinrude ETEC 30 and was the perfect size engine for the boat. Top speed was 21.6 knots (40 km/h). It was quick to get on the plane and run maximum rpm

with the weight of two guys, plus some gear. If you are looking for a small, versatile, lightweight dinghy for fishing/diving or just towing the kids around, then you need to put the Nuline 45 DG on your watch list. It is also extremely well built and to the highest standards, so it’s a boat that’s certain to be tough and durable. For $NZ16995, you get a boat, on a trailer, powered with a 2 stroke Suzuki and 185mm x 130mm

While currently there are only two hull sizes available, this is certain to change and already there are plans for a bigger volume 5m version. I predict Nuline is a brand we are going to see a lot more of. Look for a full review in AB #11 (Sept release) of the Nuline 48 Centre Console.

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

BOAT TEST ADVENTURE 1450D

Adventure Boats started less than 12 months ago and currently offer three models based on the 1450; in tiller steer, centre console or cuddy cabin. According to Conder Marine’s, Russell Conder, the most popular has been the centre console, followed by the tiller steer Dinghy and the Fisher. “We developed the Adventure range of boats to suit the type of boating that a lot of our clients use their boats for in our area especially”, says Russell. He adds that the boats not only had to have a sharp modern look, with a practical layout, but also be great performers. “We reckon they punch above their weight (size) when it comes to ride and handling and the feedback we get from customers is they aren’t afraid to run them hard in the choppy water”. Our test day on Tauranga Harbour was about as calm as you would find the harbour and despite heading out through the entrance and past The Mount, the best I could find was a low swell.

STYLISH PONTOONS The 4mm pontoons are split into three chambers per side with full buoyancy under the sole, making the boat virtually unsinkable. Externally the pontoon shape is flat, with none of the rounded looks of earlier pontoon boats. It not only looks good,

but it also allows for maximum use of the beam. Wide side decks make great seats and the coamings are high enough to be safe when you have youngsters aboard. A chequer plate sole gives some degree of surefootedness and you can always add tube matting. The internal layout is straightforward and practical and much as you would expect to find in a big open dinghy. Seating is provided with a sliding rear bench seat and a padded cushion (optional) at the bow. The bench seat can be moved almost three-quarters forward from the transom. You can add another second bench seat or other seating options such as fixed pedestal or cantilevered, but personally in a boat this size the openness is what makes it so appealing. I found that steering the boat from the bench seat was very comfortable and works well with the standard tiller. If you had an extended tiller, you would simply slide the seat further forward to achieve the desired position. The bow seating is essentially just the padded top on the locker. This is also where you find most of the boat’s dry storage with plenty of space for a couple of small gear bags. It also doubles as the anchor locker, so you may want to have a separate bag or bin for the anchor and rode, so the rest of the space stays dry. There’s also enough space here for a small

ALLOY BOAT 2017 ISSUE #11

90

drum winch. Being an alloy boat, the position of the forward bulkhead could easily be moved aft and without encroaching too much on the cockpit floor space, you could significantly increase your storage space. This also acts as good casting deck if you are into your soft baiting. A storage shelf runs all the way around the boat under the wide flat gunnels. The shelves are available with either tube rails or a solid lip. Our boat came with a tube rail, but my choice would be for a solid up-stand, so small items don’t end up in the bilge. One advantage of the tube is it provides a convenient handrail. Apart from that, the cockpit is open and ready for your fish and bait bins, tackle gear and rods. The standard boat has fourrod holders, two in each side deck. The boat comes with a short boarding platform either side of the outboard and there’s an optional ladder available.

MODERATE POWER We ran a 40hp 2S Tohatsu, which was fed from a tote tank. You could easily fit two totes under the rear seat, but it’s probably not necessary. While we didn’t have a fuel gauge, in fact any instruments, my best estimate would be the Tohatsu 40hp wouldn’t use much more than 8-10 lph @ around 4000-4500 rpm. Plenty if you are just inshore fishing. Flat out the Adventure

1450D ran at 28mph on a calm Tauranga Harbour. The Adventure 1450D is rated for outboards from 25hp-40hp, tiller steer only. If you don’t fancy the tiller steer option, there is the 1450CC, which is a centre console version of the 1450D or the 1450R runabout model. These are rated a little higher from 40hp50hp. My run on Tauranga Harbour quickly showed how stable and agile the boat is. Throwing

it into hard turns, I found it hung on so tight I had to brace myself to stop sliding off the seat. I also made sure I had the kill switch lanyard around my wrist. While it’s only a small boat, it’s got all the attributes to handle some reasonably choppy seas.

CUSTOMISE Overall a nice boat that is exceptionally well finished and ideal for anyone looking for an easily handle, easily towed and indeed

Salt-Away is the most concentrated salt removing product on the market. Using our Mixer Unit and 40mls of Salt-Away you can flush your engine, wash the salt off your boat, trailer, trailer brakes, fishing gear (boats up to 7 metres in length), for as little as .95c per wash, and it leaves a protective film. Salt-Away breaks down and removes salt build-up with repeated use and is made in the USA. NZ FREEPHONE
