Swaying palm trees in the tropical breeze, turquoise ocean water, the sounds of exotic birds drowning out the click of golf balls off the verdant green fairway, the allure of icy tropical drinks at The 19th hole. These are the sights and sounds of a round of golf in the Florida Keys.
A Tiger in The Woods Golf Tournament, hosted by the Key West Chamber of Commerce, takes place on April 23 at the Key West Golf Club. Fun for all, over $20,00 in prizes, plus raffles for the family. Inside this guide are the local golf and tennis clubs, from Key Largo to Key West, to play and enjoy while visiting or living here in paradise.
Inside are articles by top golf professionals on how to warm up, drive, chip, putt and maybe win a round with your friends every once in a while. There is also some good info on how to avoid heat stroke and flying bolts of lightning while out on the golf course. If you hear those sirens, get off the course not under a tree. Don’t fool with Mother Nature!
For you out there who don’t know when to say “when”, we have the Keys 100-mile Ultra Marathon in May, and the ReMARCable Tour De Keys bike race in September, both raising money for good local causes. While cruising the Florida Keys, don’t forget to stop by the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada, it has great shows on SCUBA’s origins and awesome underwater sea life exhibits.
Jimmy Buffet doesn’t call hanging out in the Florida Keys “Living in Paradise” for nothing. Get out there and enjoy… and don’t forget to hit the clubhouse when you’re all done playing.

Cruises departing from the Schooner Wharf Dock (202 William Street) are the Makai Daytime (1 hour), and Makai Sunset (90 minutes). The Makai Daytime cruise explores around the harbor in a nice quick trip. This is great for guests who want out on the water, but do not have much time. The Makai Sunset cruise has a quicker trip to sunset as it cruises around the Historic Seaport, Sunset Pier, Mallory Square, and Sunset Key before the famous Key West Sunset.
Cruises departing from Mellow Ventures (1605 N. Roosevelt Blvd.) are the Garrison Bight (90 minutes), Swim Stop (2 hours), Seaport Cruise (2 hours), and Sunset Cruise (2 hours). The Garrison Bight cruise is slower-paced and offers a preview of the Naval Base housing and Garrison Bight Marina. On the Swim Stop cruise, guests can hop in a mini sandbar or swim in a trench which is better for those who want to snorkel. The Seaport cruise cruises by the Historic Seaport, Sunset Pier, and Mallory Square during the daytime. On the Sunset cruise, guests get to view the famous Key West sunset from a tiki boat by Sunset Key.
Cruises departing from Hurricane Hole Marina (5110 Overseas Hwy.) are the Eco cruise (90 minutes), Sandbar (3 hours), and Hurricane Sunset (2 hours). The Eco cruise will allow you to explore the Florida Keys wildlife. On the Sandbar cruise, you will get to spend time at the local-favorite Boca Chica sandbar. The Hurricane Sunset offers a more secluded sunset cruise.

One Shot at a Time!
Celebrate Conch living and join our unrivaled “on the water” golf tournament.
The Conch Scramble is a one of a kind golf experience that people look forward to each year. There are no green’s fees, golf carts, or sand traps. Each foursome travels by boat from tee to tee, with a designated driver/caddie. Boats are docked and golfers come ashore. Each player gets two shots at the ‘floating targets’ from each tee venue. The golf balls are biodegradable. They turn into fish food after 90 hours. (This event occurs under a permit from FKNMS) After playing nine holes, the teams
celebrate at Chief Marine, with an awards ceremony, food, and fun.
All teams show their spirit by decorating their boats and dressing up in costumes. While it is not a requirement to dress up, a special award is given to the most spirited/ best dressed team.
The Conch Scramble is a 501(c)3 organization that makes grants to nonprofit organizations in an effort to enrich the quality of individual, family, and community life. With Over 240
participants in the golf event and hundreds in attendance at the kick off party, this is one of the most successful fundraising events in the Keys providing some of the largest grants to local organizations. Each year our Board requests applications from organizations that wish to be considered recipients of a grant. The CS Board selects local charities to be the recipients of the money raised. The Board’s decision is based upon application materials and organizational need.
This Year’s Conch Scramble Charity Golf Tournament will take place on September 27 & 28, 2024

Improve Your Fitness & Your Game
THROUGH CONCIERGE AT-HOME PERSONAL TRAINING
Whether you are trying to break 100 for the first time or are gunning for the club championship, golf is a competitive sport. Golfers are always looking for that one thing that will give them the competitive advantage: golf clubs, golf balls, lessons with the pro, time at the driving range, Etc... There is one piece of equipment that is consistently overlooked and will give the biggest bang for the buck when it comes to improving your game. Your own body!
Golf is a complex sport that requires the body to function as one kinetic chain. When we swing a golf club, power is being generated by the entire body and passes through subsets of muscles on it’s way to the golf club. If any muscle within the chain is over-tight or not firing properly the chain is broken. The result is a loss of range of motion and power which leads to a less efficient swing and the potential for injury.
What causes some muscles to be over-tight and others not to fire properly? The simple answer is daily life. Here is one example.
Spending the day sitting; be it at a desk or in a car, causes the muscles in the front of our hips, Hip Flexors, to become tight and our butt muscles, Gluteus Maximus, to become inactive or weak. This leads to loss of range of motion, loss of strength, and potential injury. This is one of the reasons your lower back can feel tight or painful when standing up after sitting for a period of time. This is just one example, but the scenario can play out in our ankles, hips, shoulders or neck.
What’s the solution? Identify the tight and inactive or weak muscles. The tight muscles need to be properly stretched and the weak muscles need to be strengthened. While you can certainly do this on your own, I recommend working with a professional personal trainer who specializes in corrective exercise. A professional trainer will be able to design a program that will help strengthen your body and improve proper movement. This will not only improve your golf game by improving your swing, it will improve your overall health and fitness.
Steven Hochman is a NCCA accredited, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Certified Nutrition Coach. He offers concierge at home personal training in the Fort Myers area. Consult with your doctor before beginning any fitness or nutrition program.
Golf Equipment Tips for Women
It may be easier to use one putter rather than two or more. By practicing with one putter you allow yourself to become more familiar with the characteristics of that one rather than trying to remember all the qualities of each putter. Practice often with your favorite putter.
To get the most from your golf equipment, it’s best to utilize equipment that is best fitted for your body and swing. With the incorporation of an optimized club and shaft, you could
increase your driving distance by about 15 yards without changing your swing.
If your normal score ranges in the low 80s to 70s a more traditional player’s club (or muscle-back club) will work best for you. Cavity-backed clubs have the weight of the club focused in the back around the edges. This helps keep distance in the event you miss the face center when taking your shot.
South Florida is one of the most vulnerable areas on the United States coast for a hurricane. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew, the most powerful storm in Miami-Dade County, registering as a Category V, and the third strongest in U.S. history with sustained winds in excess of 155 mph, came ashore and destroyed many marinas in south Miami-Dade County. Hurricanes that exceed 110 mph can be expected to occur in south Florida about once every 10 years. The population of Miami-Dade County continues to increase, bringing many boaters with little hurricane experience.
The wind will be the biggest enemy. There are several things to do to help minimize its overwhelming affects. Knowing how to secure your boat and where to keep your boat are the two primary concerns. The most important thing to remember is DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! Being prepared in advance by having a plan and practicing your plan will help to protect your life and property.
