Cooler than average temperatures were felt across the state last week with temperatures averaging 71.4 degrees, 4.8 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 1.47 inches statewide, 0.69 inches above normal. There were 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending August 27. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 4 percent very short, 20 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 5 percent very short, 21 percent short, 72 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. Corn in the dough stage reached 96 percent. Corn dented reached 79 percent, up 15 percentage points from last week. Corn mature reached 11 percent, compared to 25 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Soybeans blooming reached 97 percent. Soybeans setting pods reached 85 percent. Soybeans coloring reached 5 percent, compared to 4 percent for the 5-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves was at 1 percent. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Cotton setting bolls reached 98 percent. Cotton with bolls opening reached 15 percent. Cotton condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Rice headed was at 95 percent. Rice condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 6 percent excellent.
