Week Ending May 5, 2013 Limited planting and tillage progress was made across the state before late week precipitation halted fieldwork. The western and north-central parts of the state experienced snowfall of 1 to 5 inches May 2nd through the 4th. There were 1.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply was 2 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and 50 percent surplus. The northeast district was rated 80 percent surplus followed by the southeast district at 70 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was 2 percent very short, 8 percent short, 73 percent adequate and 17 percent surplus. Spring tillage was 44 percent, compared to 88 percent last year, and the 5 year average (normal) of 61 percent. Field Crops Report Corn planting was 22 percent complete, 27 days behind last year and 18 days behind normal. The northwest district increased 15 points to 18 percent complete. Corn emerged was 12 percent complete, 18 days behind last year and 9 days behind normal. Cotton planting was 2 percent complete, 23 days behind last year and 17 days behind normal. Rice planting was 65 percent complete, 22 days behind last year but 4 days ahead of normal. Rice emerged was 41 percent, 15 days behind last year but 2 days ahead of normal. Sorghum planting remained at 2 percent complete. Winter wheat headed was 13 percent complete, 33 days behind last year and 17 days behind normal. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. The heavy, wet snow flattened some wheat on the western side of the state with some able to recover. Pasture & Livestock Pasture conditions were 2 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 48 percent fair, 28 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Supply of hay and other roughages was 31 percent very short, 35 percent short, 33 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were 2 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus. Weather Summary Temperatures were 3 to 6 degrees below average across the state. Precipitation averaged 1.58 inches statewide. The 4 week average is 7.79 inches with districts ranging from 9.22 inches in the northeast district to 6.69 inches in the northwest district.
