Week Ending September 4, 2011 Agricultural Summary Warm weather with little precipitation allowed for 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork statewide. Topsoil moisture continued to decline with 32 percent very short, 36 percent short, 30 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.

Although the northwest fared best with 82 percent adequate, hail and wind damage were reported. Subsoil moisture supply was 22 percent very short, 36 percent short, 41 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

Notably, drought continued in the southwest and west-central districts and was also now prevalent in the northeast district. Field Crops Report Corn dented was 94 percent, 8 days ahead of last year, and 2 weeks ahead of the 5-year historic average (normal). Corn mature was 49 percent the same as last year, but 4 days ahead of normal. Corn harvested was 11 percent, 3 days behind last year, and 1 day behind normal. Due to the late planting and dry summer, the southeast district was 9 percent harvested compared to 56 percent in 2010 and 13 percent in 2009. Corn condition was 19 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 26 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Soybeans setting pods and beyond was 94 percent, 1 day ahead of last year, and 6 days ahead of normal.

Soybeans turning color and beyond were 13 percent, 2 days behind last year and normal. The southeast was well behind last year due to the late planting, but the northeast, west-central, and central districts were ahead of last year due to the dry summer. Soybeans dropping leaves and beyond was 3 percent, 2 days behind last year and normal. Similarly the northeast development continued ahead of last year while the southeast was behind last year. Soybean condition was 13 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Sorghum headed was 98 percent, the same as last year, but 6 days ahead of normal.

Sorghum turning color was 54 percent, 11 days behind last year, and 6 behind normal. Sorghum mature was 17 percent, 1 week behind last year, and 3 days behind last year. The west-central and south-central began harvesting sorghum. Sorghum condition was 6 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 1 percent excellent.

Alfalfa hay 3rd cutting was 90 percent, 1 day behind last year, but 5 days ahead of normal. Pasture & Livestock Pasture condition continued to decline with 22 percent very poor, 26 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 16 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Supply of hay and other roughages was 7 percent very short, 22 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Producers across the northeast as well as all central and southern districts reported feeding hay to livestock.
