Week Ending July 17, 2011 Agricultural Summary High temperatures and little rain decreased crop condition statewide but allowed 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply decreased rapidly from last week to 12 percent very short, 36 percent short, 49 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. The west-central district was 76 percent in the short and very short topsoil moisture supply categories, followed by the southwest and the south-central districts with 67 and 64 percent in the short and very short categories Field Crops Report Corn silked and beyond was 74 percent, moving 30 points from last week, but remaining similar to historic development. This was one day ahead of last year, and 4 days ahead of the historic 5-year average (normal). Corn dough stage and beyond was 11 percent statewide, 5 days behind last year, and 3 days behind normal. The southeast district was 43 percent at the corn dough stage. Statewide corn condition remained fairly good with 7 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 50 percent good and 13 percent excellent. However, corn condition in the southwest district was 49 percent in the poor and very poor categories. Soybeans blooming and beyond were 34 percent with the north-central district 49 percent. This was 1 day ahead of last year, and 2 days ahead of normal. Soybeans setting pods were 6 percent with the northwest district sitting at 14 percent. This was 2 days behind last year but the same as normal. Soybean condition was 3 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Sorghum heading and beyond was 5 percent, 15 days behind last year, and 14 days behind normal. Sorghum condition was 3 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Alfalfa hay 2nd cutting was 84 percent with the west-central and southeast districts nearing completion. This was 1 week ahead of last year and normal. Alfalfa hay 3rd cutting was 8 percent complete, 4 days behind last year, but the same as normal. High temperatures slowed alfalfa development across the central and southern districts. Other hay cut was 90 percent, 9 days ahead of last year, and 1 week ahead of normal. Pasture & Livestock Pasture condition in the good and excellent categories declined 16 points from last week to 3 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 37 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Weather Summary Precipitation averaged 0.62 of an inch statewide. In some areas water levels along the Missouri River began to decline. Temperatures averaged 3 to 6 degrees above average statewide with highs nearing or exceeding 100 degrees.
