Missouri Weekly Hay Summary The hopes of Hurricane Dennis being our salvation to the drought faded quickly for the majority of the state. Other than the northwest corner of the state most areas are in a world of hurt. Many cattle are showing up at the sale barns because of no pastures and a lot of the ones that aren’t are now being fed hay. In a few small areas you can find farmers chopping corn because they have already given up on any grain harvest. Trucking hay is becoming a big issue this year with the sky high fuel cost. Hay prices would like to rise but it seems even with high fuel cost and low supply many buyers refuse to pay any more currently, so some cases sellers are also choosing not to sell as the chances of conditions getting better look more unlikely each day. Hay movement is moderate, prices are reported as steady to firm and supply is moderate to light. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay hotline available for buyers and sellers.
