I hope everyone has enjoyed the many local events and activity's that have been happening over the past month despite the scorching weather we have had. I enjoyed watching the solar eclipse, I hope you caught it too. With the summer holidays coming to an end I would like to wish all of the students good luck with you next year of school. NDDH birth services temporary changes
Temporary suspension of births at North Devon District Hospital from Tuesday 11 August Despite extensive efforts to maintain services, births at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) have been temporarily suspended from Tuesday 11 August 2026. The difficult decision to suspend birthing services has been taken on safety grounds because there is insufficient consultant and registrar cover. We believe concentrating births in locations where safe medical cover can be guaranteed is the safest option for women, birthing people and their babies. The temporary suspension affects birthing services, face to face triage and special care baby unit only. Other services including community midwifery, scans, birth planning, ultrasound clinics and antenatal outpatient clinics remain open for women and birthing people in Northern Devon. In preparation for the suspension of birthing services, the Trust has contacted over 300 women and birthing people who are 34 weeks pregnant or more, as well as those identified as vulnerable or clinically high risk, to discuss their individual circumstances, care plans and the travel and transport support available. A dedicated helpline for pregnant women and birthing people is available – 01271 335773, (9am-5pm, Monday – Friday) and the maternity triage line is available 24/7 for those who require urgent medical advice – 01392 406616. In addition an information pack for women, birthing partners and families in Northern Devon has been produced alongside a set of frequently asked questions. Find out more. Alongside managing the temporary suspension, the Trust has already established a dedicated reopening programme, focused on recruitment, workforce planning and service resilience to enable a safe return of births to North Devon.

Atlantic to Pacific - The Long Rid
British endurance cyclist Joshua Moodie has announced plans for a groundbreaking, unsupported cycling expedition from the Atlantic coast of Europe to the Pacific coast of Russia, crossing two continents and more than two dozen countries over the course of a year.

Council launches consultation on renewal of Dogs Public Spaces Protection Order North Devon Council is inviting residents to share their views as part of a public consultation on the renewal of its Dogs Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which is due for review in 2027. Introduced in 2021 and last renewed in 2024, the PSPO is designed to tackle anti-social behaviour linked to dog fouling and dogs out of control, while ensuring public spaces remain accessible and enjoyable for responsible dog owners. The eight-week consultation opens today (Wednesday 5 August 2026), giving residents the opportunity to help shape how dog control measures are managed across the district. The existing order includes a range of requirements, including making it an offence for owners not to pick up after their dog; requiring dogs out of control to be placed on a lead when requested by an authorised officer; and mandating that dogs are kept on a lead in cemeteries, churchyards and graveyards, ornamental or formal public gardens, council-owned car parks and allotments. It also stipulates that no person may walk more than six dogs at any one time, with a maximum of three off-lead or on extended leads (over 2 metres). Dogs are prohibited from formal sports pitches and enclosed children’s play areas. Between 1 May and 30 September they are not permitted on Croyde or Combe Martin beaches. Dogs must also be kept on a lead in specified areas of Croyde Dunes at certain times of year and must not be walked in breach of any clearly signposted temporary restrictions. More details on the current PSPO can be found on the council's website. Councillor David Clayton, Leader of North Devon Council, said: “We know how important it is to get this balance right. The rules need to support responsible dog ownership while also protecting shared spaces for everyone. We’re keen to hear what local people think before any decisions are made.” Residents can take part in the consultation via the council's website. Paper copies are also available at Barnstaple Town Centre Hub in Green Lanes, Barnstaple (Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm), The Ilfracombe Centre, and the Amory Centre in South Molton. Full opening hours are available online. The consultation will close on 30 September 2026. 34
