Spotlight on… the Pannier Market in Bideford
The Pannier Market is a Grade II Listed landmark in the heart of Bideford at the top of Bridge Street with immense potential to become a thriving cultural, social and economic hub for the town. Its architecture and central location offer character and charm, and the Market is home to a fantastic range of independent retailers.
With the help of central government funding, Bideford Town Council will refurbish this historic asset this year.
Phase 1 of the works will result in a new roof for the historic building as well as improvements to the external masonry, and some upgrades to the mechanical and electrical systems. These works will not result in creating an immediate wow factor but will ensure the lasting protection of the building’s historic fabric.
Following these works, the Town Council is also hoping to respond to a pressing local need: Bideford currently has no large, purpose-equipped events venue. The Market Hall is already licensed for alcohol consumption and approved for hosting dance, film, and live music events, yet its infrastructure requires significant revitalisation if it is to fulfil its potential as the heart of the town’s cultural and social infrastructure.
The Town Council is looking to transform the Market complex into a flexible, multi-use venue and economic catalyst serving residents, businesses, and visitors. Planned enhancements, such as flexible staging and improved acoustics, would allow the Market Hall to host conferences, trade shows, and cultural events at a scale currently unavailable in North Devon.
The existing retail units remain a distinctive asset, supporting new and growing businesses. With new complementary businesses joining and existing traders expanding, Butcher’s Row continues to build momentum, positioning the Market complex as a regional foodie destination and driver of wider economic benefit.
Success must also be measured in community pride. Co-designed events, volunteer opportunities, and youth initiatives will ensure the complex reflects local aspirations. While nearby parking supports access, anticipated growth will require additional solutions, which the Town Council is committed to exploring.
Save the Date – Bideford Fair on 6 June 2026
Save the date in your diaries for the annual Bideford Fair on Saturday, 6 June 2026. A family fun day and community event in Victoria Park starting with the Mayor's Procession through the town. This isn’t just any town fair it’s a celebration of tradition, talent, and toe-tapping fun. Expect live music, stalls, delicious food, family fun, and non-stop entertainment. We have an aqua adrenaline show lined up, Exmoor Zoo are showcasing some of their furry and scaly residents and the Town Council will host a cream tea festival in the Mayor’s Marquee.
The Town Council will publish further details very soon, including the times for the Mayor and Civic Party's Procession through the town and the dog show.
There is no entry fee - everyone is welcome. Bring your friends, your family, and your four-legged companions we look forward to seeing you there!

Masterpieces of Modelling - Inspiration for the next generation- A free public exhibition at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon By North Devon Model Society.
