Gardening tips September 2024

Jobs to do in September

1. Cut back, lift, and divide summer flowering herbaceous perennials. Replant or pot up divisions as soon as possible and water well.

2. Replace summer bedding with winter/spring interest plants. Use fresh compost if growing in containers.

3. Plant spring flowering bulbs (except Tulips) and Prepared Hyacinths for Christmas.

4. Harvest pumpkins and winter squash when fruits are richly coloured and ring hollow when tapped. Cure fruits outdoors in the sun for seven to ten days before storing.

5. Clean out birdbaths with a mild detergent to help prevent the spread of disease.

Summer makes way for autumn this month at the nursery, with the greenhouse filling up with winter and spring plants.

Pansies, Violas, Panolas, Primroses, Polyanthus, Forget-me-nots, Sweet Williams and Wallflowers will all be ready by the end of September.

A selection of bulbs will also arrive here with us at Ash Moor Nursery in the first half of September.

Until next month, Jenny Howells
