Molton Monthly Magazine - September 2024

Welcome to the September edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. There is a well-known saying ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’ but I was probably more flabbergasted when, like some of you, I read of plans for a (new) ‘Molton Magazine’ locally.

Let me be clear, this is nothing to do with your award-winning Molton Monthly Magazine, founded in 2007 and delivered through your door every month for 17 years. We’ll continue to provide a roundup of the latest news and events, support local charities, businesses and jobs and be a voice for our community.

I’ve been lucky over the last 40 years as a news journalist to have worked on many innovative projects, sadly that also brings its imitators. However, there will only ever be one Molton Monthly Magazine and I plan to continue with business as usual. I hope you enjoy this issue.

The cover photo is one of the many delights from this year’s fantastic North Devon Show, a wonderful celebration of rural life. This month we also feature Chulmleigh Old Fair, South Molton’s own ‘Olympics’ and more.

Molton Monthly Magazine is also published free to read on our website moltonmonthly.co.uk and we have daily updates for news and events on Facebook and Instagram @MoltonMonthly

Doe a deer, and her twins

The beauty of nature in our local countryside never ceases to amaze, and moments like this might go unseen but for the dedication and skill of people like renowned wildlife photographer Dr. Jochen Langbein who captured this iconic Exmoor scene for our photo of the month.

“It was lovely to see this special moment with a Roe doe and her twins, amongst the stunning August purple, pink, yellow and green colours of Exmoor’s flowering heathers and western gorse moorland,” Jochen told Molton Monthly Magazine.

Blank greeting cards and prints, mostly of Exmoor deer and other wildlife, can be found at Jochen’s web-shop: langbeinwildlife.org

Whether it’s wildlife life like this, a landscape or seascape, rural life, nature, special events, sports, a local character or something elseplease keep emailing us your pictures. We usually only feature one each month in the magazine, but show more on our Instagram and Facebook pages: @MoltonMonthly

Exmoor National Park halves carbon emissions

Exmoor National Park Authority has announced a 50 percent drop in its carbon emissions since a climate emergency was declared back in 2019. Both Exmoor and Dartmoor have committed to becoming beacons for a sustainable future, using their partnerships to help meet

the UK’s climate change targets while also supporting thriving rural communities.

Andrea Davis, Chairman of Exmoor National Park Authority said, “We hope by demonstrating the great work we’ve done already halving our own emissions across Exmoor, we can now encourage other organisations to think about how they can reduce their carbon emissions and the impact of climate change.”

Alongside wind turbines like the one pictured above, there’s been a switch to electric vehicles and tools, environmental improvements at historic buildings, school activity sessions, plus tree and other planting schemes helping to draw down excess carbon from the atmosphere. Even the iconic signs and gates seen across Exmoor are being made from locally grown wood.

North Devon Show in pictures

(pages 18 - 21)

A few blustery showers failed to deter the thousands of visitors who flocked to the fields of Umberleigh Barton Farm for the 2024 North Devon Show.

Celebrating all aspects of rural life, the annual show was hailed a success by organisers, after previous years where ‘freak’ bad weather saw the charity losing tens of thousands of pounds in ticket revenue. Show secretary Theresa Soanes said, “We’re pleased it stayed largely dry. I’m really delighted we’ve got it right this year, with all of our traffic management and everything seemed to run smoothly.”

“We had a really bad financial year last year so hopefully we can now start turning it around again and keep going for the future.”

Old fair ‘on fire’!

It has been running for 771 years, and with a theme of ‘traditional folk songs’ the organisers say this year’s Chulmleigh Old Fair was a big hit.

It was proudly opened by retiring fair chairman Peter Older and his wife Sue with the crowning of ‘the Queen’.

“Peter was chairman of the committee for many years and we thank him for his long service, and for all the other things that he has been involved with in the community,” said new Chulmleigh Old Fair chair Sue Reed.

By popular demand the opening evening saw an impressive and fiery display by the Higher Beings Circus (photo right supplied by the group).

The week continued with the craft fair, fancy dress, country market, sports day and culminated with a street party on Saturday.

“A big thank you goes to the Chulmleigh Old Fair committee for organising this annual event upholding all the ancient traditions. Also to the army of volunteer stewards, firstaiders, the generosity of sponsors including Molton Monthly Magazine, and the support that our local businesses give, without which this event couldn’t take place,” added Sue.

South Molton’s ‘Olympics’

South Molton in Bloom organised a shop window competition with an Olympics 2024 theme across the town.

“It was overwhelming the amount of support and the effort everyone made was amazing,” said SMiB coordinator Sue Harrison. “There were so many unique and fantastic ideas that judging was incredibly difficult.”

Jacqui Footman, South Molton Mayor, judged all the windows on Friday, July 19th.

1st prize: South Molton NFU Mutual

Joint 2nd prize: The Rotary Club and The Shop on the Island

3rd prize: The Flower Shop

Highly commended: John Walker Insurance; The Cheese Larder; Refurnish; The Wooden Frog; Eastleigh Care Homes on East Street and at Raleigh Mead

Jobs to do in September

1. Cut back, lift, and divide summer flowering herbaceous perennials. Replant or pot up divisions as soon as possible and water well.

2. Replace summer bedding with winter/spring interest plants. Use fresh compost if growing in containers.

3. Plant spring flowering bulbs (except Tulips) and Prepared Hyacinths for Christmas.

4. Harvest pumpkins and winter squash when fruits are richly coloured and ring hollow when tapped. Cure fruits outdoors in the sun for seven to ten days before storing.

5. Clean out birdbaths with a mild detergent to help prevent the spread of disease.

Summer makes way for autumn this month at the nursery, with the greenhouse filling up with winter and spring plants.

Pansies, Violas, Panolas, Primroses, Polyanthus, Forget-me-nots, Sweet Williams and Wallflowers will all be ready by the end of September.

A selection of bulbs will also arrive here with us at Ash Moor Nursery in the first half of September.

Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - hello sun, goodbye Theo

At long last the sun shone for our local agricultural shows but it did provide a dilemma. Do we have a day off or stay at home harvesting? For most farmers we combined (excuse the pun) the two and for me, even watching some cricket.

On reflection, after such a dire winter and spring, the combination of frequent showers and warmth, crop yields have exceeded expectations. This is especially true of grass for which Devon is renowned.

One sad note for us was having to say goodbye to Theodore. He was our last remaining alpaca. He unfortunately lost his mate back in the winter of natural causes.

Alpacas are herd animals and although Theo did very well on his own, with just sheep for company, we had to make a decision. Either to buy another alpaca for friendship or move him on. In the end fate intervened, as a fellow farmer lost one of theirs and needed a mate for their remaining alpaca. Hence Theo has now moved home.

I already miss him, but with our new vineyard tours and tastings focussing our attention (quoitatcrossvineyard@gmail.com) we haven’t decided on his replacement. Watch this space! ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com)

Correction

Apologies to Dave Winter of South Molton for adding an ‘s’ to his surname last month, in the story about new water meters causing problems.

Green award for community garden

The South Molton Community Garden team were delighted to hear that we had been awarded a ‘Wildlife Gardening Award’ from the Devon Wildlife Trust!

Our garden is a wonderful space for nature; a home to toads, frogs, bees and other pollinators, slow worms, birds, hedgehogs and many other creatures. We work hard to maintain a safe and welcoming place for the wildlife and it was lovely to receive recognition for our efforts.

We’ve been continuing with the ‘mud kitchen’ and a group of us met at the garden to position the kitchen table. We’ve almost finished weeding and levelling out the mound of soil in the mud kitchen area, but the bind weed really got a hold in that soil. It’ll be an ongoing project to clear the last of the tough roots.

New members are welcome! If you’d like to join us, please visit the garden on Thursday afternoons at 2pm (weather permitting). See our website for more info: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or on Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

Delayed Link Road project ‘nearing completion’

As first reported in the July edition of Molton Monthly Magazine, contractors Griffiths claim the North Devon Link Road scheme is due to be largely completed by the end of September. Requests for up to date information in both July and August haven’t received a reply.

The £67 million project, designed to improve road safety between South Molton and Barnstaple, is nine months late and is on its third ‘completion deadline’. A Devon County Council report sent to the magazine on July 29th says the new West Buckland bridge junction is likely to be the last section to be finished. “Despite the unfavourable weather in the first half of 2024, the project has made good progress in all sections over recent months, with a number of key project milestones being met,” said a council spokesman.

South Molton Carnival - can you help?

Organisers are appealing for assistance with the town carnival that returns to South Molton on October 12th (advert page 14). They’re looking for people to be stewards and marshals, tea and coffee makers, raffle ticket sellers, collecting/donating raffle prizes, bucket money collectors walking alongside the parade and general runners/helpers. For all enquiries please email or call Claire Bracher: 07973 545530 or email info@bar27.co.uk

Northern Lights and meteors light up night sky

The Northern Lights put on another fabulous display overnight on August 12th/13th, captured on camera by a few lucky night owls. This time the aurora borealis coincided with the Perseid meteor shower, as can be seen at the top of this picture, as a meteor streaks across the dramatic night sky at Kings Nympton.

Opening time

South Molton saw two new facilities opening in recent weeks, with the new play park equipment near the swimming pool (top left) and the Skate Molton HQ in East Street (above). Special guests from the twin town Shama in Ghana joined the celebrations.

Special poppy appeal

The South Molton Royal British Legion is looking for crafters of all ages to make poppies to decorate the town. It is in the run-up to Remembrance commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day. All entries are needed by October 7th.
