The founder of the charity ChemoHero has been battling cancer herself for ten years (see page 8).

However, Covid-19 infection rates remain high in both North and Mid Devon and a new campaign has been launched to encourage young people to get vaccinated (page 29).

Harvest on high

A bird’s eye view of a golden summer harvest, as farmer Jon Becklake brings in the wheat read for thatching. Photographer and filmmaker Martin Pailthorpe from King’s Nympton captured this timeless scene using a drone camera for our September photo of the month.

Looking down from on high helps us see the symmetry and precision as the bales of wheat fly off his vintage tractor and baler, and are then stacked in ‘stooks’ by hand by a team of farm workers on this field alongside the George Nympton to South Molton road.

Martin told Molton Monthly, “I am starting a project to film interviews with people who grew up in King’s Nympton and surrounding area in the 1960s and before, as the way of life they knew is disappearing fast! One interviewee, Amy Bowden - nee Luxton, remembers driving the

tractor while harvesting like this - her dad was riding the harvester giving hand signals to keep her cutting straight rows. She was just 11 years old!”

ChemoHero founder Lisa Wallis receives British Empire Medal “It was very special for me, and a proud moment to gift my medal to my son Stanley,” said Lisa Wallis on receiving her British Empire Medal from the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, in August.

“I ask you all to continue to support my charity ChemoHero. Life is getting much harder for me and I want to tell you all how much I love you.”

Lisa chose to have her medal presented at North Devon Hospice, an organisation that provides vital care for many local cancer patients. She worked tirelessly to set up and run the charity ChemoHero, despite being diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 2012 aged just 29 years old.

She was awarded the British Empire Medal in Queen’s New Years Honours list in 2020 for her services to people with cancer and their families. The presentation was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Lisa received the prestigious award alongside a small group of family and friends.

“My friends and family, and my truly incredible son Stanley, have been those that have held me together over the last decade of treatment and I want to say how thankful I am to them all,” said Lisa.

ChemoHero provides ‘boxes of kindness’ containing 40 items chosen to help bring relief and comfort to cancer patients. The charity has so far sent more than 1,000 boxes to local chemotherapy patients here in North Devon.

Police helicopter finds missing six year old girl “Have you got her?” asked the helicopter crew. “Yes, yes she’s alive and well,” came the reply from relieved officers searching on the ground.

This was the dramatic moment the National Police Air Service’s South West Region team was able to spot a missing six year old using their infrared camera system. The small black dot in the centre of the image right, is the girl lying asleep in a farm field next to a tree.

The drama unfolded on the night of Saturday August 14th when the youngster was Image: NPAS reported missing from her rural home in the Umberleigh area around 9.30pm. A massive search swung into action, including police dog handlers from the Devon & Cornwall force. The police helicopter spotted her asleep in a field more than half a mile away from her home at around 10.40pm.

A spokesman for the National Police Air Service said, “In this instance, a massive team effort from the police control room, the police officers on the ground and the officers in the air got this child home safely to her terrified parents.”

The young girl was taken to hospital to be checked over as a precaution before being returned home, ending what officers described as “every parent’s worst nightmare”.

Stark warning on climate change The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published their latest report in August, with the most updated understanding of the climate system and how our climate is changing.

Their message is bold; we are experiencing unprecedented climatic changes at an alarming rate that will impact us all.

We are lucky to live in the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve area. However, despite the beauty found in our coastal areas, rolling countryside hills and woodlands, experts say we are not immune to the impacts of a changing climate.

Mike Moser, Chair of the Biosphere’s Nature Improvement Group says, “Climate change is increasingly one of the root causes of nature’s decline across the North Devon Biosphere, compounding the historical loss of natural habitats, intensification of land use and the use of insecticides and herbicides.”

“Our newly launched nature recovery plan aims to make natural habitats more resilient to climate change by increasing their size and quality, and through increasing connectivity and dynamism so that species can move across the landscape.”

The Biosphere team is looking at local actions to increase carbon sequestration in soils, hedges and woodland - described as a “win-win” for nature and the wider climate.

“Restoring wetlands will sustain river flows and help reduce flood risk. Meanwhile, restoring natural coastal habitats can play a key role in buffering the effects of sea level rise,” Mike told Molton Monthly.

He says there is hope and great opportunity for action to reverse nature’s decline, but this requires commitment and action from us all.

A361 roadworks mean changes at busy North Molton junction There will be overnight road closures on September 1st and 2nd on the A361 between North Aller and Bish Mill roundabouts. Temporary local diversions will be in place.

It’s the next stage of the link road improvement scheme, as contractors Alun Griffiths start putting in safety barriers to protect their workforce.

After that, the North Molton junction will be altered while work continues, removing the option to drive straight over the A361 between South and North Molton at Borner’s Bridge. Instead drivers will have to make loops around the two roundabouts to turn off (see graphic above).

All the fun of the (very) old fair!

Chulmleigh Old Fair has been running without break for the last 758 years, and the organisers were determined not to stop that historic tradition because of the pandemic.

“With a fair chartered to us in 1253 and continued through two World Wars and Foot & Mouth, we weren’t going to let Covid break that tradition!” said Chair Peter Older.

They were determined to bring some much needed cheer to the community after so much isolation over the last 18 months.

More than 20 events went ahead during the week at the end of July, with the street market and country fair proving very popular.

The sports day attracted enthusiastic competitors and supporters of all ages, and the week ended in spectacular style when the centre of Chulmleigh became a street party, with a variety of games, dancing, three live bands and street food.

“All of us on the committee would like to thank all the hard working volunteers, sponsors and local businesses as well as the fairgoers for all their support,” said Bride Knight. “Many thanks also to Molton Monthly magazine for their consistent encouragement and help with publicity.”

The organising committee are already focusing on 2022 and delivering an even more spectacular Chulmleigh Old Fair.

“It was a great success despite everything that has happened, and even the odd spot of rain didn’t dampen spirits - we trust that it will continue for another 758 years,” added Peter Older.

New Covid-19 vaccine campaign targets younger people The rate of Covid-19 infections in both North and Mid Devon remained above the national average for the second month in a row.

Now a new ‘Together for Devon’ campaign is being launched on social media to encourage younger people to get vaccinated (right).

NHS Devon’s chief nurse Darryn Allcorn said, “Many of the people in hospital with Covid-19 this summer are younger and unvaccinated.”

“People who are double vaccinated may find it easier to access places such as nightclubs and events, and now will no longer have to isolate if they’re in close contact with someone who has Covid-19.”

Positive cases in our area remain the highest

they’ve been since the start of the pandemic - in mid August they were at more than 370 in North Devon and 270 in Mid Devon.

Free Covid tests are available at the mobile unit in centre of South Molton on Tuesdays (9am - 12.30pm) and Fridays (1.30pm- 5pm).

Jobs to do in September 1. Order and apply nematodes in September for control against vine weevil larvae, slugs and lawn pest such as chafer grubs and leather jackets.

2. Take semi-ripe cuttings of hebes, privet, heathers and viburnum.

3. Lightly trim beech and hornbeam hedges to keep them neat. This will allow time for some regrowth, and the new, juvenile growth will be held throughout the winter.

4. Prune summer fruiting raspberry canes, cut back to ground level. Select strong young canes that have grown this year and tie them in 3 to 4 inches apart along the wire supports.

5. If your pond is near deciduous trees, scoop out excessive leaves with a net before they drop to the bottom.

Celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by being part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Everyone across the UK is being invited to plant trees from October 2021 when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

New stock of container grown ornamental trees will be available at the nursery from the beginning of September, and bare root fruit trees will arrive in November.

Farm Life - thirty days hath September

Yummy... apple pie, blackberry and apple crumble, plum pudding. Just when you think that summer is over, September provides us with nature’s bountiful harvest from our orchard and the hedgerows.

To celebrate, many harvest festival services take place. Slightly scaled down from years gone by when the church was overflowing with sheaves of corn, vegetables and preserves. Sports amongst the cow pats on the farmer’s field, followed by a hearty supper in the village hall raising money with an auction of produce.

Another day out in September is the local ploughing match and although I no longer compete, I still like to check out the straightest furrow. My favourite sight though is the heavy horses. A majestic tribute to days gone by when man and beast worked so hard together.

Back to our small orchard. Apples, pears, plums, crabapples and damsons provide exciting ingredients for preserves and pies to fill the larder and freezer. Out in the barn we as a family work together to extract and bottle some juice from the fruits. Oh and did I mention cider? If my ramblings for next month are a little blurred, then you know I’ve done a few tastings!

Local author is flying high!

For one mum in South Molton lockdown has brought out her creative side, and Jo Blake (right) has now published her second children’s book.

Jo had always dreamed of writing and illustrating her own children’s books from a young age, “I used to love reading to my daughter when she was little, stories would bring up emotions and important messages to be learned! Rhyming stories are my favourite, especially if they incorporate some humour within the text.”

Her second book, ‘Chiri the Hummingbird’, is about a small, sparkly hummingbird who likes to fly faster than any other birds in the Amazon rainforest. On a journey of self discovery, where he learns about empathy

and kindness. This book was inspired by Jo’s first book ‘Shy Skye Flies High!’, about a hyacinth macaw, who finds the courage to overcome her fears and play with her friends.

Community News pages 50-53 Fine for 15,000 fish deaths The North Devon company that caused a pollution incident leading to a devastating fish kill on the River Mole near South Molton, has been fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £9,836 in costs.

Agricultural contractors, A J Sing and Son Ltd, of Pillavins Farm near South Molton, pleaded guilty when they appeared at Exeter Magistrates Court on Wednesday July 28th.

Ryan Adams, an employee of A J Sing and Son Ltd at the time of the incident, also pleaded guilty, and was fined £667 with costs of £2,000.

In July 2019, Environment Agency officers found an estimated 15,600 dead fish along a

4.7 kilometre stretch of the River Mole (above), including salmon, brown trout, sea trout, bullheads, stone loach and minnows.

Environment Officer Nicola Rumsey said this was a “truly shocking” fish kill on a previously pristine stretch of water, adding, “It may take a number of years for the fish population to fully recover.”

The incident was caused by a spill of anaerobic digestate, a kind of fertiliser packed with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, due to an unrepaired leaking pipe followed by a period of heavy rain.

S.O.S. Save our Scouts

Olympic pride

For 100 years Chulmleigh Scouts have been serving the local community, but now that’s under threat due to a lack of team members.

North Devon athlete Phil Norman said he was proud to have achieved his dream of competing in the Olympics in Tokyo. A late muscle injury meant he finished his heat in the 3000m steeplechase event in 13th place. The 31 year old thanked everyone for their support.

The 1st Scout Group urgently needs six new volunteer leaders to be able to resume it’s activities for local young people. Training will be given to those who join up.

Pony round-up on Exmoor

The spectacular annual gathering-in of the herd of Tippbarlake Exmoor ponies (left) took place in early August on Brendon Common in Exmoor National Park. They are rounded up to record them and for health checks.

Beaver is first born in 400 years A baby beaver has been born on Exmoor for the first time in four centuries. Known as a kit, it was spotted on camera (below) at the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate, where the animals were reintroduced just 18 months ago. Rangers say the family is thriving.

Fiery challenge at Amber Can you take the heat? Local youth homelessness charity Amber are looking for brave souls to take part in their first ever fundraising fire walk!

It takes place at their supported living centre in Chawleigh, near Chulmleigh on October 8th. Participants will be challenged to walk across a 20 foot lane of hot embers! It is being run in partnership with ‘BLAZE the fire walking experts’, who will provide training for all those taking part.
