Molton Monthly - November 2021 Welcome to the November edition of Molton Monthly. We’ve turned our cover gold this month in honour of the wonderful South Molton in Bloom volunteers, who have been awarded gold and a class win in the South West in Bloom competition. Congratulations to everyone involved! Not only has it been fantastic for the community, it’s helping our environment too, with lots more healthy blooms for our vital pollinators. Here’s to next year when the town will be entered in the champion of champions section (see pages 20 - 21). Also check out the launch of the Cyril Cole memorial meadow competition (pages 46 - 47), and find out how to volunteer to monitor our rivers in the fight to tackle climate change (page 8). Congratulations to local rugby star Emma Sing, who has been selected for the senior England squad (pages 18 - 19). We’re all being urged to ‘do our bit’ in the face of surging Covid-19 numbers. Hospital admissions and positive cases both doubled in Devon in October, and more than 800 NHS staff are off work due to Covid (page 52). The key message is to make sure you’re up to date with both Covid and flu vaccines, practice social distancing, wear face coverings and isolate if you’re feeling poorly. All this comes against a backdrop of local businesses preparing for the festive season, and a packed diary of public events planned across November and December. As always, please shop local and stay safe. Pete Robinson, Editor & publisher Molton Monthly is also published free to read on our website moltonmonthly.co.uk and we have daily news updates on Facebook and Instagram @MoltonMonthly

A Common Blue butterfly roosts atop a Ragged-robin plant, displaying the intricate and vibrant colours of its underwings. Photographer Martin Brace had a 4am start to capture this moment of sheer beauty at a nature reserve in North Devon, for our November photo of the month. “I am keen wildlife photographer with my main subject of interest being insects particularly butterflies, dragonflies and damsels,” Martin told Molton Monthly. “This rare meadow flower is as beautiful as the butterfly itself and certainly made the early morning rise worthwhile.” We seemed to have an amazing amount and variety of butterflies this year, especially in the warm weather through September. You can see more of Wayne’s photography online: flickr.com/photos/waynebrace instagram.com/waynebracephotography Whether it’s nature like this, rural life, sports, special events, wildlife, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. Climate emergency - you can help monitor local rivers

Autumn on the River Bray, Filleigh Photo by Karolina Andreasova

Could you be a ‘citizen scientist’? The North Devon Biosphere’s Pledge for Nature project is teaming up with the Westcountry Rivers Trust’s ‘Citizen Science Investigations’ to develop a network of people to help look after our local rivers. The Environment Agency’s most recent assessment of the ecological status of the 100 waterbodies in the Biosphere concluded that only 15 of these were in ‘good’ condition, a decline on previous surveys. “By volunteering people can monitor water quality, record wildlife and invasive species, and identify pollution sources - all of which will support our charity’s mission to restore and protect our rivers, lakes, and estuaries,” said Lydia Deacon, Westcountry CSI officer.

Iconic species like the freshwater pearl mussel are at risk of extinction in the Biosphere, and the latest studies put the Atlantic salmon as “at risk” in the Torridge and the Taw rivers. As has been seen by the recent mass fish deaths on the River Mole near South Molton, experts say the Biosphere’s rivers and streams need monitoring as they are extremely vulnerable to pollution. Mike Moser, from the Biosphere said, “Getting more ‘eyes on rivers’ will monitor river conditions and identify possible pollution.” Volunteers will be trained to take water samples and complete surveys. If you would like to help monitor and protect these vital habitats by becoming a river citizen scientist, please complete a ‘Create a Pledge’ form online: biosphere.org.uk/ pledge-for-nature/create-a-pledge (In ‘Description of Activity’ include the name of the river/stream you would be willing to monitor)

Red Roses call-up for rugby Emma South Molton’s Emma Sing has been selected for the senior Red Roses rugby squad to play against New Zealand, Canada and the USA. The England team is made up of a mix of youth and experience, featuring 11 uncapped players. All matches will be shown live on BBC Two. Emma, who now plays for Gloucester-Hartpury WRFC, scored from a conversion kick on her debut for the under 20s national team in March 2019 (pictured right). She began her rugby career aged just 6, playing for South Molton RFC alongside the boys until her early teens. “It’s a huge honour to be selected,” Emma told Molton Monthly, shortly after hearing the news. “This season I’ve just been focusing on playing the best I can be for Gloucester-Hartpury. I’m constantly learning and I can’t wait to be able to develop my game over the next few weeks.” Her mum Wendy said, “We are enormously proud of Emma’s massive achievement. Her dedication and hard work has paid off with her being selected for the senior England squad.” South Molton’s current crop of young female players say they are thrilled to hear of Emma’s selection. “We’re all ecstatic that Emma will be featuring in the autumn games. It’s an amazing achievement and she is a huge inspiration to us all,” said Ashleigh Rollins. “We’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved so far and can’t wait to see how you do. Good luck Emma!” We’ll be featuring more on South Molton’s vibrant girls’ rugby programme soon: southmoltonrfc.rfu.club

Gold for town’s bloom volunteers

Left to right; Margaret Chester, Reverend Jane Lucas. judge Richard Taylor, SMiB coordinator Sue Harrison, Mary McMonnies and Elaine Symons

“Huge and wonderful thanks to all our hard working volunteers and all our sponsors and supporters,” the words of South Molton in Bloom coordinator Sue Harrison, on hearing of the town’s success in the 2021 South West in Bloom competition. South Molton was awarded gold, won the Ayre Cup and its overall category, and the community gardens were cited as ‘outstanding’ in the ‘Its Your Neighbourhood’ section of the RHS supported awards. At the presentation ceremony at the Winter Gardens Pavilion in Weston super Mare on October 7th, judge Richard Taylor said there were many “high class” projects. He said, “It was a fantastic & well deserved award. The valiant, united and ambitious group fed off Sue Harrison’s dynamic & diligent leadership. They worked well with the local council and businesses.” Fundraising and planning is already underway for South Molton’s 2022 entry, with a quiz (opposite) and a stall at South Molton Pannier Market on November 11th. As we start to come to terms with life with Covid-19, it’s great see a whole host of special events lined up throughout November and December after so much was cancelled last year (see what’s on p11 - 14). Local businesses are bouncing back and adapting to new ways of working, and there’s a great choice of shops and services to choose from... and don’t forget, shop local isn’t just for Christmas - it’s for life! By spending with our many fabulous retailers, hospitality venues, markets, farm shops and business services you are supporting local jobs, improving the local economy and helping the environment.

The town’s Christmas Lights switch-on will be a separate event on the evening of November 19th from 5pm in The Square.

There are firework displays in North Molton and Kings Nympton on November 5th, and George Nympton on the 6th. South Molton follows on the 12th with fireworks in the town’s Central Car Park, entry is free with donations to North Devon Hospice (page 11).

Following the success of South Molton’s first Festival of Food & Drink in September, the town council are delighted to announce a follow-up festive themed event on Sunday November 28th from 10am to 3pm. (Continued on pages 28 & 29)

This year the honours will be performed by Mayor Mervyn Way and Jade Kingdom. Jade has Downs Syndrome, but set herself the challenge of completing the London Triathlon in August, raising more than £15,000 for North Devon Hospice.

Taking place inside the town’s Pannier Market, under the twinkling of the Christmas lights, the event promises to offer visitors a wonderful selection of food and drink from some of the best sellers the West Country has to offer.

With Christmas being less than a month away the food festival may provide the perfect opportunity to pick up some early gifts, whilst supporting the area’s local food and drink producers. Worried about supermarket supplies? Why not head to your local butchers, farm shop, vegetable supplier, grocery store or delicatessen. You can get your Christmas trees and logs from local business too!

The Southernhay Sale features Judith’s work along with bronzes from Dinsdale Petch, homeware and sculptures from David Ames, and Jenny Wilkinson with her handmade rugs and knitwear.

If you are looking for unique and special gifts and enjoy investing in local quality makers, then drop in to Southernhay in North Street, South Molton between Friday November 26th and Sunday 28th (see advert page 14).

This is an opportunity to talk to the artists themselves, and understand more about what goes into their creative processes.

Southernhay is the home and studio of printmaker Judith Westcott, and from here she creates stunning handmade woodblock prints inspired by the natural world.

The popular Winter Wonderland event run by South Molton Business Association is a daytime event this year. It is scheduled to go ahead on Sunday December 5th between 10am and 3pm. Molton Monthly is proud to be one of the sponsors.

Jobs to do in November 1. Plant tulip bulbs in pots and borders, covering them with at least twice their depth of soil or compost. 2. Plant bare-root hedging, roses, fruit bushes and trees before the weather turns really cold. 3. Protect plants that are borderline hardy, such as Agapanthus, by either moving them into a greenhouse if they are in pots, or cover with a thick mulch of straw or garden compost if planted in the ground. 4. Prune fruit bushes once they are dormant, including blackcurrants, redcurrants, whitecurrants and gooseberries. 5. Check bonfires carefully before lighting to make sure no hedgehogs or other wildlife are sheltering inside. Autumn is always hugely busy at the nursery as we pot up all the perennials, shrubs and climbers. In November we must wait for deliveries of bare-root roses, fruit bushes and trees to arrive, then pot them up as fast as we can before the Christmas season is upon us. This autumn we have bought in more varieties than ever before, which means more choice for you next year! Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - Remember, remember the Fifth of November by Roger Hill

We were invited to Castle Hill Dog Show and Fun Day at Filleigh, where I have never seen so many dogs together in one place! Our Lottie (pictured right) was a star on our stand, promoting my children’s books as she can be found hiding on every page. Families loved the link between the stories and being able to stroke a real live furry celebrity! Together we raised money and awareness for our chosen charity ‘Cots for Tots’. The day also reminded me of the unique bond between owners and pets, and how valuable that has been over the past eighteen months. A dog is for life, whether working, sporting or companionship. They need constant love and attention, but also discipline. The latter is so important especially in the countryside where there is livestock. We hear too many horror stories, but with training of both owners and dogs we can live together in harmony. November can be a frightening time for all our pets as fireworks light up the night sky. A little care and compassion is required, whilst remembering the attempted blowing up of Parliament. As my old history teacher asked, ‘Where would we be today if Guy Fawkes had succeeded?’ ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)

Fond farewell to show president Family and friends gathered under late September’s blue skies to celebrate the life of Roger Savery (right). He was well known to many as the president of the North Devon Show in recent years. Roger passed away aged 78 on August 26th, and was laid to rest at Atherington Church on September 22nd following a service at his family home. His final journey through the village was by horse drawn hearse, with a team of Shires from Waterers’ Working Horses. Funeral arrangements were taken care of by Jonathan Blackmore of H. N. Blackmore & Sons Funeral Directors, South Molton.

He leaves behind his wife Brenda, daughters Mandy, Polly & Amy and three sons-in-law, grandchildren Thomas, Matt, Lucy, Chloe, Alfred & Sidney, and his sister Shirley.

A collection for Devon Air Ambulance in his memory has so far raised £1,330.

Among the many tributes, the team at the North Devon Show said from next year the main ring at the event will be named ‘The Savery Ring’. “We are all thinking of Brenda and his family at this sad time. Roger will be sorely missed by us all. Such a character, such a gentleman, his passing will leave an irreplaceable hole in show family,” they said. His life involved being a dedicated family man, landlord, builder, hunt and horseman and friend to many. Donations to Devon Air Ambulance can be made through H. N. Blackmore & Sons.

Cyril Cole wildflower meadow competition You are invited to take part in the inaugural Cyril Cole Wildflower Meadow Competition. Cyril worked tirelessly to create and maintain the wildflower meadows on his land, and he supported many others to do the same on theirs. He was a source of wisdom and inspiration and when he passed away last year we lost a great advocate for wildlife in Devon. As a mark of remembrance, and to continue Cyril’s great work, his family would like to invite people in northern Devon to create or improve a wildflower meadow, and enter it into the competition next year. The competition will have three categories: Garden meadow - anyone with a garden can put over a part of it to wild flowers (gardens can be up to 1 acre in size, no minimum size) Community group meadow - community groups and schools with a communal space are invited to create their own meadows (no minimum area)

One of Cyril’s beautiful meadows

Landowner’s meadow - this category is open to people who have more land (over 1 acre) and are able to put aside more space for wildflowers. To take part simply create or improve your meadow this year and then send a short description of your work (150 words) and three photos. The judging will be carried out by a small panel of local wildlife enthusiasts who knew Cyril and worked with him on meadow creation projects. The prize will be £100 for the winner of each category. The overall winner will also receive a small trophy which will be engraved and passed on to future winners. Please submit your application to: meadowcompetition@gmail.com Deadline for entries is July 15th 2022

Community News pages 50-55 Mission Unbreakable returns with a big splash! 600 brave souls conquered the mud, marsh, rivers, hills and obstacles at North Molton Sports Ground, aiming to raise up to £30,000 for North Devon Hospice. After a Covid-enforced absence in 2020, ‘Mission: Unbreakable’ returned on October 10th - featuring an array of tough challenges on a specially built commando course. It was a poignant occasion for friends and family of David Campbell and Keith Regan. Both men had taken part in Mission Unbreakable before, but each had sadly passed away since the previous event in 2019. Both were supported by the hospice throughout their illnesses.

Coming up for air - photo by Steve Batchelor

David’s wife, Clare Campbell said, “It was emotional coming up that final field to the finish line, knowing that David and Keith would have both loved every second of it. David took part in the event four or five times, and I could feel his presence around the course.” Jess Burford Redgrove, from North Devon Hospice, said it was incredible to see everyone taking part again. “After a year when so much fundraising had been cancelled, and our charity shops had to be closed, it was a worrying time. We need the support of the community to continue providing care for local people who face lifelimiting illnesses like cancer.” She paid tribute to 24 Commando Royal Engineers who run the course, and all the volunteers and sponsors for their support.

New rural landing site for air ambulance A unique partnership has successfully established a new night landing site for Devon Air Ambulance on farmland in Romansleigh, near South Molton.

The Webber family joined by project partners at the new landing site

It will be located at Romansleigh Barton on land owned by the Webber family. Toby Russell, from Devon Air Ambulance, explained the background of the project, “Several years ago, Richard Webber kindly contacted Devon Air Ambulance to see if part of his family farm could be used as a community landing site. These floodlit and surveyed sites are used by our crews to safely fly into the heart of isolated communities when it is dark.” Richard Webber of Romansleigh Barton added, “We are delighted to have been able to provide this site for the community, not just for Romansleigh but hopefully also serving some of our other neighbouring small villages and rural inhabitants.” Rural broadband provider Airband gave permission for one of its rural telecommunications masts to be used for the lighting. Funding was provided by Romansleigh Parish Council in partnership with local district and county councillors.

Covid-19 cases surge The number of patients in Devon’s hospitals with Covid-19 almost doubled in the first three weeks of October, and the number of positive cases in North Devon has risen sharply again to 454 (from 360 last month) and 528 in Mid Devon (from 200 last month). Parents can now book Covid-19 vaccinations online for their 12-15 year old children. NHS Devon’s Chief Nurse Darryn Allcorn said, “Coronavirus rates are currently highest among people of school age in Devon. Many pass the virus on to their parents and family members.” “We strongly recommend youngsters take up the opportunity to have the vaccination whether in school or at one of our local vaccination centres. It will reduce their chance of feeling very unwell and having further disruption to their education if they catch Covid.” The National Booking System can be used to book appointments for a first dose for 12 to 15 year olds in Devon at Barnstaple Leisure Centre or Greendale Vaccination Centre, Woodbury Salterton, Exeter - phone 119 or go online at: nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/

Covid-19 booster vaccinations are also now being administered in Devon. The NHS will let you know when it’s your turn. You’ll be offered a booster at least 6 months after you had your 2nd dose. Please wait to be contacted via letter, text or email before trying to book.

Home-grown Manager for South Molton Swimming Pool Local lad Sam Mason (right) has been appointed as the new Development Manager at South Molton Pool by the operator 1610. Sam trained as a lifeguard at South Molton Pool at 16 years old over ten years ago, as well as qualifying as Level 1 Swim Teacher. Aquafit classes have resumed at the pool (see page 50), but Dan Bryant from 1610 says public swimming might not resume until later this month due to a shortage of lifeguards, “Recruitment has been a struggle, as it currently is in many industries. We have a lifeguard qualification course scheduled for the end of October, so provided candidates pass we’re looking to reintroduce limited public swimming from November onwards.”

Super donation for footballers

Sainsbury’s has rewarded South Molton Football Club for its work in the community with a voucher for £200. South Molton AFC have teams in most age groups, from 5 years old up to adult football. They say they welcome new members and volunteers to their thriving club. The donation will be used to support upcoming events and activities for all their teams.

Firey fundraiser

22 brave people took part in a charity fire walk on October 8th at the youth homelessness centre in Chawleigh, raising £3,200 for the charity. The Amber Foundation runs Ashley Court, which is home to up to 30 local young people, who face a range of issues including homeless, unemployment and mental ill health. Fundraising manager Becky Fry said, “We are so grateful to everyone who came and supported this event- it was a brilliant evening. It would be fabulous to make it to £3,500 raised, so please do donate if you can.” Above, Aiden hot stepping
