Molton Monthly Magazine - May 2026 Welcome to the May edition of Molton Monthly Magazine.

I would like to introduce myself as the new publisher of the Molton Monthly Magazine.

I currently publish The Bideford Link magazine and my brother Danny, publishes The North Devon Insight and EX33 Magazines.

I would like to thank Peter for everything he has done to build The Molton Monthly over the years and wish him a happy retirement.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter holiday and I’m sure everyone is already looking forward to the Mayday bank holiday on 5th May and the spring bank holiday on the 25th.

With the longer evenings now upon us and finally some nice weather it might be time to dust off the barbecue.

I would also like to wish everyone good luck with their upcoming exams an A levels.

The ‘No-Prick’ Revolution: How a Two-Person Devon Nursery Mechanised to Beat Labour Shortages and Head to RHS Chelsea

As the UK horticulture industry faces an ongoing crisis of labour shortages and extreme weather, one Devon nursery has secured its future by mechanising one of gardening’s most tedious tasks: pricking out.

Celebrating their 35th anniversary this March, Hannah and Nick Wade of Gardeners Delight Nursery in Barnstaple have radically streamlined their 100% peat-free growing process. By investing in specialist machinery that sows seeds directly into compost-filled cells, the duo has completely eliminated the traditional, labour-intensive pricking-out stage.

Hannah Wade explains: “We work to the light and do long hours on the nursery and Nick now does most of the seed sowing with a machine that shakes the seed and drops it directly into the cells.

The reality is, we are short on labour. It’s hard to find staff who want to do a highly physical job through all weathers. As we’ve gotten older, we are embracing technology to lighten the load and keep production high.”

High Yields, Low Headcount The shift to mechanisation has not only saved time; it has effectively future-proofed the business.

Boasting a failure rate of less than 5%, the new system allows the couple, alongside just one part-time employee working three mornings a week, to fill an entire 60-foot polytunnel in a single day.

Hannah Wade adds: “I did a couple of talks to garden clubs last year, and they couldn’t believe how mechanised we are. We’ve made our lives as efficient as possible to produce as much as possible, despite our small size.”

From Devon Doorstep to the Great Pavilion This newfound efficiency has freed up the Wades to return to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. Their 2026 Great Pavilion display, ‘Plants For Pollinators,’ will showcase hundreds of plants grown entirely peat-free at their Barnstaple site.

Crucially, the 2026 stand will focus on container-grown perennials, tapping into the booming demand for eco-friendly gardening in small spaces. The display aims to prove that high-impact pollinator planting is just as achievable for a renter with a doorstep pot in South London as it is for a large country estate in Devon.

Having luckily avoided the worst of the recent extreme rains in North Devon, the nursery is focusing on high-impact, shade-tolerant plants like Thalictrum ‘Black Stockings’ and ‘Splendide’, alongside Dicentras, Iris, and Geums, with maples providing structure and canopy.

Umbels as Landing Strips A major feature of this year's Chelsea display will be the extensive use of umbel-shaped flowers, all grown from seed.

Hannah Wade notes: “To complement the other perennials that tend to have bigger heads, we will be interspersing with umbels. With their open, round heads, they act as the perfect landing strips for bees, butterflies, and vital insects.”

Staying true to their grower roots, the Wades are taking a pragmatic approach to their final Chelsea plant list. “We grow a massive amount of seed, see what’s looking good on the nursery, and then work with our colour theme to create a complete ecosystem in a pot.”

MARKET UPDATE – REALITY VS WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR Across a 20-mile radius, 30-50 properties are being added or reduced in price everyday. With over 4,000 homes currently on the market - some listed for months or even years - supply is high and competition is strong.

This has created a challenging marketplace. Many properties remain overpriced relative to current conditions, while transaction times are lengthening and fall -through rates are increasing. In short, it ’s taking longer to secure the right buyer at the right price.

Since the market peak of 2022, demand and therefore achieved values - has softened. The unusually low stock and intense demand seen during the post-Covid period created inflated expectations. We are now seeing a continued correction as supply significantly exceeds normal levels.

Asking Price vs True Value Yes, some asking prices have risen - but asking price is not the same as value. it ’s easy to value property based on what we see ‘For Sale’ creating a false inflated market.

A marketing price reflects expectation.

A sold price reflects reality.

When sellers benchmark against other “For Sale” properties rather than completed sales, expectations can become artificially inflated. This risks prolonged time on market, price reductions, and ultimately achieving less than if the property had been correctly positioned from the outset. A stagnating property bleeds value as the longer a property remains on the market at an inflated price, the further behind it falls as conditions evolve.

A Buyer’s Market Requires a Smart Strategy Demand dictates value. Without demand, there is no leverage and no value.

To achieve the best result in today ’s market, pricing positioning must: - Create immediate interest - Generate viewings and demand - Extract the strongest possible offer from a proceedable buyer, before the market falls away Statistically, the easiest way to undersell a property or not sell at all is to overvalue it at launch.

This is not about selling cheaply or rushing a sale. It is about understanding the market as it is - not as we hope it to be - and positioning correctly to maximise outcome. True worth is what someone is prepared to pay.

If you want to sell, listen to the market, price strategically, and negotiate intelligently when you buy. Don ’t value your own based on what a similar property is listed at and has been for months, or even what they paid during a stronger market.

Market conditions are unlikely to change dramatically in the short term. Acting decisively and realistically now typically secures a stronger result than waiting, while the market adjusts around you.

Your jobs to do in May

1. Plant out summer bedding towards the end of the month, these plants will give you a wonderful display of colour until the first frosts.

2. Plant up hanging baskets and keep them protected until later in the month when the risk of frost has passed. Water and feed them regularly.

3. Earth up potatoes as they grow, to protect the early shoots from frost damage and ensure the developing potatoes aren’t exposed to light, which turns them green.

4. Prune spring flowering shrubs such as Chaenomeles, Choisya and Ribes after flowering. Evergreens such as Viburnum tinus can also be trimmed this month.

5. This time of year is nesting season so check for nesting birds before clipping hedges.

May is the busiest month of the year for plant sales, so whilst it’s very tempting to buy all the plants which are flowering, try to choose some varieties which will flower later in the year as well so you have a succession of colour throughout the summer and autumn, or pop back each month and keep buying the ones which are flowering!

Farm Life by Roger Hill

A swarm in May. The world is in turmoil and even if we are not directly involved, conflicts affect our day to day lives.

Escalating costs put pressure on businesses and to remain solvent, price increases are passed on to you and me.

As farmers we are quite resilient but when core products are in short supply, as well as becoming more expensive, it is a worry. This impacts on the mental health of growers and producers especially coming on the back of a very wet winter.

One example has been that many hives of bees have been lost. Our neighbour has no survivors including the several hives on our fields. This is despite him checking and giving them extra food through the winter.

The old saying of ‘a swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay’ might have to be revised to three loads.

Fortunately May sees the start of the agricultural show circuit with the Devon County beginning on the 21st.

It does give the opportunity for farmers to get off their land and mingle with others. Chatting, although not always solving the issues, does allow for a problem shared to be a problem halved.

South Molton Community Garden news

The Community Garden has been bustling with activity and we’re making good use of the drier weather.

Our shed and field kitchen have been given some TLC and have had a fresh coat of wood preservative. Many of us have tidied our plots and removed weeds ready for the new growing season. We spent one of our team days clearing and preparing the communal plots, so they are almost ready to use.

Next on the list is tidying up the raspberry patch before it all gets too wild.

The children spotted some frogspawn and tadpoles swimming about in a shallow puddle on the plastic sheeting. It was drying out, so they moved the tadpoles to the safety of the pond. The following week, we checked the pond and counted 3 frogs, 4 newts and lots of tadpoles!

News Roundup pages 50 - 53 South Molton Town Council has awarded funding to WayMakers Devon Community Interest Company to develop an exciting new project, partnering with UK organisation Young Enterprise.

The resulting programme aims to support young people in South Molton to build employability skills, confidence and a unique pathway to the world of work.

WayMakers will work with both young people and local mentors, to recognise and harness the benefits of neurodiversity in the workplace, whilst developing and launching their own business concepts.

This is particularly significant as it marks the first time in Young Enterprise’s 60-year history that the organisation will deliver a community-based programme. The initiative will act as a pilot designed to meet the specific needs of young people in the South Molton community, which has been identified as a youth unemployment hotspot.

Tony George Partnership Manager for Department for work and Pensions said “ we warmly welcome this new initiative to support young people to build their employability skills and move closer to the world of work”.

The programme will be open to 12–15 young people and will run from autumn 2026 through to summer 2027. Local businesses interested in mentoring are invited to express their interest by contacting emily.abbott@northdevon.gov.uk.

Exmoor National Park 2026 Nature Festival Programme Launches.

Exmoor National Park Authority (ENPA) are delighted to announce that this year’s Exmoor Nature Festival event listing and printed programme is now available.

The festival running from Saturday 16 May to Sunday 31 May features over 50 events. From meadow yoga to woodland talks, farm tours to pool dips, there’s a wide range of wildlife and wellbeing activities across North Devon and West Somerset.

Festival organiser Julie Colman, Rural Enterprise Coordinator with ENPA, said: “The Exmoor Nature Festival is such an exciting fortnight, highlighting the health benefits of nature and the beauty of the National Park. Visitors and the local community will be able to enjoy all manner of experiences, celebrating what our unique natural environment has to offer. Our thanks to the Somerset and Exmoor Local Visitor Economy Partnership for their support.”

Ten adorable otter cubs saved by UK charity to be released back into the wild After many months of care, including veterinary treatment, hand-feeding, and round-the-clock dedication, ten otter cubs are now big and strong enough to be released back into the wild. The cubs have been nursed back to health and raised to independence by the UK Wild Otter Trust.

Based in North Devon, the charity - run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers - rescues otters from all across the country, always with the aim of rehabilitating them to the point where they can safely and successfully fend for themselves in the wild.

Typically, otter cubs remain with their mothers for just over a year, learning the essential skills they need to survive.

So when tiny, helpless cubs are found alone, with no sign of their mothers, the experts at the UK Wild Otter Trust step in to give them the best possible chance of survival.

Just before Christmas 2024, two tiny twelve-week-old cubs,Tinsel and Star, captured the public’s hearts with their story.

Found just days apart in Norfolk and Wiltshire, respectively,and each weighing roughly the same as a bag of sugar, the pair were introduced to support each other’s development.

The charity later shared that they had become “best friends,” helping one another learn the vital skills needed to thrive independently in the wild.

Dave Webb, Founder of the UK Wild Otter Trust, said, “Releasing these ten otters back into the wild is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Every time we receive a call from a concerned member of the public about an abandoned or injured cub, our hope from that very moment is to give that animal the chance to live a full life in the wild, as nature intended.

“Sadly, it’s not uncommon for it to already be too late by the time we’re alerted - being without their mother at such a young age can be catastrophic. That’s why moments like this mean so much. To be able to rescue a cub, nurse it back to health, and watch it grow into a strong, independent animal ready for release - that’s exactly why we’re here.”

This week, the pair have been successfully released back into the wild alongside eight other rescued - most likely orphaned - cubs. As with all releases, the charity aims to return the animals to areas close to where they were originally found, where possible.

The release comes as the charity reaches a major milestone, relocating from their home of the past five years to a new permanent site, after being unexpectedly told to leave the land where they had established their rescue and rehabilitation centre.

“It’s been an incredibly challenging six months or so for everyone at the charity,” Dave continued. “Not long ago, we didn’t know what the future of the Centre would look like. All we knew was that we had to find a way to keep going, not for ourselves, but for the otters in our care.

“We’ve been working tirelessly to plan the move, but our priority has always remained the same: the welfare of the animals.

That’s why it feels especially meaningful this week to see ten of them strong and healthy, returning to the wild where they belong.”
