For the second month I have published the cover in the colours of the Ukrainian flag as an ongoing show of support as the first refugees from the war are welcomed here in North Devon. Ukraine is referred to as the breadbasket of Europe, and you can read our correspondent Roger Hill’s concern for his fellow farmers working in the war zone (pages 3839). It’s heartwarming to see fundraising and aid collections are continuing locally. A Mother’s Day walk through South Molton Community Woodland saw the bees, birds and butterflies out taking advantage of the warm sunshine, and it brings us our seasonal photo of the month from regular contributor Karolina Andreasova. “A European honey bee is foraging for the first spring nectar from a blooming blackthorn. The sweet scented branches were buzzing with all sorts of pollinators,” said artist and photographer Karolina. “Photographing our most precious pollinators is a technical challenge, and pushes my camera and my reflexes to their limits. Beating their wings 230 times per second, bees are incredibly fast and effective on their journey. They never mix their harvests from different kinds of flowers, so what she’s carrying here is a pure blackthorn pollen. Clever!”

Call out for nature lovers
by Fran Sendell, Biosphere award winner Perhaps not everyone is aware that South Molton is right in the middle of the North Devon Biosphere, which is a UNESCO site and one of only seven in the whole world! Our patch is specifically selected because of its unique habitats and includes Lundy and its Marine Reserve, the sand dunes and burrows, the coastline, the extraordinary Taw and Torridge estuaries, Exmoor, ancient woodlands and the entire catchment areas of the Taw and Torridge rivers. Since lockdown there’s been a big increase in the number of groups and families who have been out walking, enjoying nature and being outdoors - and I believe we should try to keep this momentum going.

I am certain that many of you are nature lovers, and perhaps some have studied ecology and environment and have much knowledge to share. I am putting out feelers to see how many folk might be interested in having an open meeting, to raise ideas and discuss possibilities; everybody would be welcome (email below). In South Molton we already have the Quince Honey Farm, the wonderful Community Woodland, the Community Garden, the Sheep Fair Field Wildflower Meadow re-wilding scheme, the Save Frog Lane Campaign, South Molton Save Our Swifts and Britain in Bloom which all include elements of providing for nature. Among current ideas are a Hedgehog Highway, more tree planting, extra nest boxes and wild places, dormouse, bat and wildflower surveys, nature talks and outings. Perhaps someone might like to run a Devon Wildlife Trust Watch Group for our young people. The Biosphere Pledge for Nature Officer, Emily Willoughby, would be happy to come and talk to us at our first gathering. “It was such an amazing experience, especially being away in Italy with my parents in the stand,” the words of South Molton’s Emma Sing, after scoring a try against Italy in only her second appearance for England’s Red Roses rugby team in the prestigious Six Nations Championship. “Every opportunity I get I try to take with two hands, and be the best player I can be on the pitch,” added Emma. The 21 year old veterinary student had made her debut the week before against Scotland, putting in a dazzling second half performance (left). England captain Sarah Hunter told Molton Monthly, “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Emma into the Red Roses. She’s impressed us all in training and we’re all really excited to see her develop further.”

“It was amazing that she was selected again and we were so happy that she scored her first England try. North Devon link road upgrade ‘on target’ We are now almost half way through the £63 million upgrade of the A361 between South Molton and Barnstaple, but the biggest question on many local people’s lips is ‘what’s going on’? Molton Monthly interviewed project manager Huw Owen to give you the answers. We are 14 months into this three year project, will you finish on time and on budget? “It is currently running to programme with completion anticipated in December 2023.” What have been the biggest challenges so far? “Running traffic management along the length of roadworks that maintains the free-flow of traffic as much as possible.” What is happening this summer and when will people see more actual construction? “As the weather improves, we will commence earthworks and drainage operations along the entire length of the site. So far we have completed vegetation clearance and constructed temporary haul routes.” Lots of trees and hedgerows have been removed, what is replacing them? “Before we started, Devon County Council began planting 20,000 indigenous trees and shrubs to mitigate those removed. Overall approximately 0.7 hectares of woodland will be lost, but 2 hectares planted. There will also be a loss of 1298 metres of hedges with approximately 2922 metres of new hedge planted.” Will there be average speed cameras on the finished road, and will it all be resurfaced? “Yes to both.”

Why has such a large area of trees been cleared near the West Buckland junction? “To create space to construct the new bridge and its associated embankment. When open, this bridge will replace the current hazardous road junction at West Buckland.” What’s the best thing for you personally about working on this project? “Being in such a beautiful part of the world, meeting friendly and helpful Devonians, and contributing in some small part in improving the quality of people’s lives.”

Jobs to do in May 1. Plant up pots & hanging baskets and plant out summer bedding, once the risk of frost has passed from the third week of May. 2. Water newly planted trees and shrubs regularly and thoroughly as the weather warms to prevent drought stress. 3. To prevent Aubrieta becoming bare and leggy, give plants a hard prune after flowering, cutting back to near ground level. 4. To prevent potato tubers turning green in the light, earth up potato plants by drawing the soil around the stems to form a ridge 20-30cm (8-12in) high. 5. To keep raspberry plants under control, pull or dig out any new canes that emerge away from the original row of plants. May is the busiest month of the year at the nursery. We make several hundred hanging baskets and finally finish potting up the hanging basket and bedding plants. If you would like us to plant up your hanging baskets, drop them in asap, then collect them later in the month when they are ready to hang up. Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - of tanks and tractors by Roger Hill
We recently visited Slapton Sands and saw the Sherman tank raised from the seabed in 1984. It commemorates one of the biggest tragedies during the Second World War. 946 men lost their lives during ‘Exercise Tiger’, training for the D-Day landings. It reminds us of the futility of war, especially with all that is happening in Eastern Europe. As farmers we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian counterparts, but question how they can continue their work with tanks crossing their land, military planes overhead and gunfire echoing around the countryside - it’s reported they’re wearing bullet proof vests while planting crops. Before the invasion Ukraine was known as the breadbasket of Europe, with agriculture being its most profitable business. The country is one of the most fertile places on Earth thanks to its rich black soil known as Chernozem resulting in huge exports of wheat, barley, maize and as we’ve heard in the news recently, sunflower oil. Not only are the farmers now struggling but also their animals. A mercy mission from our own village delivered vital supplies for horses including food, medicine and blankets which was gratefully received. Amongst all the carnage and heartache, one piece of video footage made me smile. It was the sight of Ukrainian farmers recovering abandoned Russian tanks using their tractors. Celebrations planned for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Communities across North Devon are preparing a series of royal parties to honour Queen Elizabeth’s 70 year reign, over the special four day Bank Holiday from June 2nd to 5th. As preparations get underway in Chulmleigh, Liz Wesson sent in a great photo capturing the atmosphere at the Diamond Jubilee street party ten years ago (above right). This year the town is planning a beacon lighting on June 2nd, followed by thanksgiving service in the church on the Friday, a fete with games and refreshments on the Saturday, while Sunday June 5th will once again see a street party in the centre of Chulmleigh. South Molton is screening the Trooping of the Colour ceremony at the Pannier Market at its Thursday market, followed by a tea dance organised by the town’s Rotary Club. June 3rd will see a Heritage Crafts Day at the market run by Arts Destination South Molton, along with a specially commissioned dance event with Katy Lee and a new song being composed by Nick Wyke (read about grant support on page 55). From 5pm on Friday evening SoundWave Radio will be hosting a party with the band BackTrax, followed by a concert from the close harmony group Hummingbirds singing songs from the 1940s and ‘50s. On Sunday June 4th there will be a Royal British Legion parade leaving the town hall at 10.30am to the church, followed by a Spitfire parked in the Pannier Market, plus a street party with teddy bear’s picnic and the town band playing in The Square.

West Buckland is planning events every day, including a village cream tea afternoon from 3pm on June 2nd. Bishops Nympton will have a beacon lighting on June 2nd. Chawleigh has its fair taking place at the playing field on June 4th from 2pm to 10.30pm with performances, children’s entertainment and live music. North Molton has a beacon lighting on June 2nd, with an evening party with dancing to the Elderly Brothers on June 4th, followed by a family fun day, bring & share and tea party at the sports centre on June 5th. Umberleigh Village Hall is hosting a big breakfast on June 2nd and a late afternoon family barbecue on June 5th. Saturday 4th will see a party at the Rising Sun pub.

In Chittlehampton, plans are underway for a village concert on Friday June 3rd, while Chittlehamholt has an afternoon and evening of family fun and celebrations at the village hall on Saturday June 4th. The real ‘good life’ part 4 - avoiding the ‘hungry gap’ An experiment in sustainable living, by Amy Rhodes
Amy Rhodes lives on a smallholding in Chulmleigh, and along with three generations of her family is on a journey of sustainable living. They aim to produce all their own food for a year, only buying sugar, flour and salt. The last couple of months have been busy, beginning with my sheep lambing. We had three sets of twins and one single. It is so much fun letting them out into the field and seeing them skipping around. Sadly one of my oldest ewes Tess died when her lambs were just 3 weeks old, so we have been bottle feeding them since then. Now they are bigger than all the others! We had managed to survive the storms in late February/early March largely unscathed, although we were without mains electricity for 5 days. Happily my house is also self sufficient, and we could keep the freezers going thanks to being off grid with our solar panels and batteries - otherwise it could have been a disaster losing vital food we had frozen. I have really got going with sowing seeds and have everything from chillis to cabbages coming up in pots in the polytunnel. It has still been below freezing some nights, so there are only onions, broad beans, peas and carrots outside so far. Some new potatoes are just coming up, and I have to watch them and cover the shoots with soil to prevent them being killed by frost. We are starting to get worried about having enough to eat through the ‘hungry gap’. The potatoes are all sprouting, and there has been some mouse damage to them and the parsnips. We may end up cooking and freezing some to prevent them deteriorating further. We have lots of purple sprouting broccoli at the moment, but soon we will be more reliant on frozen produce, some spinach and salad until greens like broad beans and peas are ready.

Although grass growth hasn’t been great so far, the ground is dry and all my animals are outside which is a nice feeling. I hired a skid steer for a day to clean out the barn, spreading the muck around the fields and saving some for my garden. Community News pages 50-55 Explosions heard in barn blaze near Umberleigh Investigators say that a massive fire at a farm building at Fishleigh Barton near Umberleigh started accidentally (pictured right). Witnesses reported hearing explosions, thought to be gas cylinders, as flames shot into the night sky on Good Friday April 15th. At its height, more than 40 firefighters from all over Devon joined local crews in tackling the flames. The A377 was closed all night and through to around 1pm on Saturday because of the severity of the inferno. It’s believed the fire started in a caravan just after 9pm, before spreading to a barn.

A spokesman for the fire service said thankfully no one was hurt, “Crews confirmed that the barn containing multiple caravans, machinery and cylinders (containing argon, butane, propane) has been destroyed, but all persons on scene were accounted for.” Fire crews from South Molton, Barnstaple, Braunton, Torrington, Ilfracombe, Martock, Witheridge, Tiverton, Bideford, Danes Castle, Holsworthy and Exeter were on the scene for more than 15 hours.

League heartache for South Molton rugby team South Molton Rugby Club lost by the narrowest of margins to Exeter Saracens on St George’s Day, finishing a close second in the Tribute Devon One league this season.

They lost a thrilling encounter 31 - 34 at Unicorn Park on Saturday, April 23rd. They had gone into the final game heading the league table with a one point advantage over Saracens following an excellent season. Phil Searle was chosen as the man of the match for the South Molton team. A club spokesman said they were “gutted” at the result, but that they will regroup with a chance to turn the tables as they face the Exeter side again, away at Exhibition Fields in the Devon Junior Cup final on May 1st.

School’s jubilee tree
Ukraine aid continues
South Molton United Primary School have planted a Prunus Pink Parasol tree, kindly donated by Ash Moor Nursery as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy programme to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee this June.
Pupils at South Molton Community College raised more than £1,600 from a series of events in March and April to support efforts to help refugees from the war in Ukraine. Charities Together in Chulmleigh sent a cheque for £2,565 to the British Red Cross from initiatives in the town, and the Royal Oak in Withypool held a quiz night in late March raising £545. North Devon Council and The Pickwell Foundation have been coordinating local efforts to house people fleeing the conflict.

Free bowls sessions Have you ever wanted to try Lawn Bowls, keep fit and make new friends? If so, South Molton Bowling Club in Mill Street are offering an opportunity to any interested non-bowlers to join them and try the game. Every Monday evening throughout May and June (from 6.30pm), one of their qualified coaches will be providing free lessons. It’s an introduction to the game in a friendly environment, allowing you plenty of time to see if you would like to play regularly. All equipment will be provided, they just ask that you wear some flat soled shoes. Jade’s cliff run Fundraiser and athlete Jade Kingdom took on the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway and raced the train to the top of the 500ft cliff raising more than £2,500 for North Devon Hospice. It took just 21 minutes to run the steep zig zag path from Lynmouth bottom station to Lynton top station. Jade, who has Down’s Syndrome, has so far raised more than £25,000 pounds for the hospice.

Jubilee art grant Arts Destination South Molton has been awarded £7,000 from the Arts Council’s ‘Let’s Create’ Jubilee Fund by the Devon Community Foundation. It will ensure that creativity plays an important role in local community celebrations for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
