Molton Monthly - March 2022 Welcome to the March edition of Molton Monthly. Storm Eunice has swept across Devon and the rest of the UK leaving a trail of damage, prompting a rare red weather warning for our part of the county and the council declaring a major incident. Homes and businesses were left without power, some for more than 48 hours, roads were blocked by falling trees including the link road (cover photo by Sophie Griffiths) and buildings were badly damaged. Thankfully there were no reports of serious injuries in our area, despite the 80mph plus gales. There’s a round-up and photos inside (pages 18-19). I delayed printing this month, to include the fantastic news that the brave rowers featured last month have completed their epic 3,000 mile Atlantic Crossing! It hasn’t been plain sailing for local lads James Bevan and Dom Thorne, but they are safe on dry land in Barbados and have raised thousands for mental health charities (pages 26-27). Are you planning a party for your community for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June? Doubts for future of Chittlehampton school
A consultation is underway over the future of Chittlehampton C of E Primary School due to falling pupil numbers. Founded in 1865, the school could close as soon as August 31st. North Devon MP Selaine Saxby (above) visited the village recently and said the future looks bleak, “I do understand why this consultation is taking place but if it does close, it is likely to be closed forever which would be very sad.” The school has a capacity of 56, but currently has only 15 pupils with five due to leave at the end of this school year. Writing on Facebook, parent Rebecca MacMills said, “This wonderful school is so much part of the community, it would be a tragedy if it closes. The kind of caring and personal education that the children get is just so special - it really is worth saving if it can.” Mum Davina Haydon said, “The teaching is amazing at this school. My son is only in reception but has already learnt so much.” Stuart Govier added, “Such a shame. Storm Eunice batters Devon

Winds of more than 80mph felled dozens of trees, damaged buildings and brought down power lines as Storm Eunice blasted across the county, with North Devon among the worst affected areas. The storm on February 18th prompted the Met Office to issue a rare red weather warning, due to the possible risk to life and Devon County Council declared a major incident. There were more than 170 power cuts leaving 35,000 households across Devon without electricity, some for more than 48 hours, including properties at Kings Nympton, Filleigh and on Exmoor. The Square and surrounding roads in South Molton were closed when the roof of the clock tower (above right) was lifted by the storm, along with damage to other buildings.
South Molton Swimming Pool (above) was closed when part of the roof was ripped off. The community woodland was also badly affected, with several trees brought down. Schools were closed for the day as a precaution, and bus and rail services in North Devon were cancelled. Gusts of 83mph were recorded at the weather monitoring station at Chivenor. Roads were blocked with fallen trees, including the A361 link road at West Buckland (opposite right). The A377 was closed with trees down at Portsmouth Arms and Eggesford and power lines near Umberleigh. Trees also blocked roads at Chulmleigh, North Molton, Filleigh, George Nympton, Meshaw and Heasley Mill.

Pop up vaccine clinic success Almost 70 people took advantage of South Molton’s first pop-up Covid-19 vaccine clinic held in the Assembly Rooms. Organisers say they were pleased with the response, stating that there was a wide mix of ages, and about 30% of those attending getting 1st and 2nd vaccine doses. Local vaccine co-ordinator John Thornton said, “That’s very encouraging as it shows the benefit of bringing the vaccine clinics to local communities like South Molton, especially as there are people unable to get to Barnstaple, whether that’s down to disabilities or time constraints.” “Those getting their first vaccines say they were delighted to finally have had it.” Members of the Armed Forces (above) were deployed to help with the vaccine roll-out. Pop clinics in South Molton were held on January 25th and February 22nd, with a third due to go ahead on March 22nd. As the government lifted remaining Covid restrictions, positive cases remained high locally with 613 in North Devon, and 612 in Mid Devon recorded in the third week of February (down from more than 1,000 each).

The team at Quince Honey Farm have become a ‘Dementia Aware Company’. Through the Purple Angel Global Dementia Awareness Programme, staff have learned how to provide a welcoming and understanding service to those with the condition.
Dementia programme ambassadors Stephen and Christine Lock (above) say they’re delighted to welcome the South Molton tourist attraction to the scheme, “Staff have gained the knowledge of how to recognise people suffering from dementia and help them enjoy their visit.” Quince Honey Farm team manager Karen Jewell added, “It’s important to make sure all our visitors feel comfortable. We’re very proud to display the Purple Angel symbol in our window.”

Two months at sea - rowers complete Atlantic Crossing For almost 60 days, they rowed and rowed, and rowed. 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from Gran Canaria to Port St Charles in Barbados. Four men in a tiny rowing boat, Cockleshell Endeavour, facing the raw power of the sea and winter storms, and even running out of food. Two of the quartet are James Bevan from Atherington and Dom Thorne from High Bickington, they were too exhausted and hungry to talk about their epic experience on landing on February 20th. Their first words off the boat were, “We’re never doing this again!” Their support team said they were immensely proud. “The boys have endured the hardest of conditions over the last couple of months. The grit and determination they have shown has been remarkable. It has all been worth it to support mental health and give it the visibility it deserves,” said Hannah Gascoigne, their social media manager and Dom’s girlfriend. Dom used to play rugby for South Molton and now coaches the women’s premiership team for the Exeter Chiefs. James is a former Deputy Head Boy at Chulmleigh College and now works as a sports scientist in the academy at Exeter City Football Club. They took turns on the oars, each pair rowing for two hours, while they other two tried to snatch some sleep - 24 hours a day. The lads nicknamed their boat ‘Stanno’ after the Exeter City football player Adam Stansfield who died aged 31 from a rare form of cancer. They ran out of food with a week to go, surviving on emergency rations. Among the highlights, James Bevan celebrated his 25th birthday half way across the ocean. They embarked on the sea voyage to raise awareness and funds for mental health charities - so far raising £12,000 of their £40,000 target. Jobs to do in March 1. Prune clematis. Prune early flowering varieties once their flowers have finished and summer flowering ones before they start into active growth. 2. Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow-release fertiliser by lightly forking it into the soil surface. 3. Continue to deadhead winter pansies to stop them setting seed. This will encourage flushes of new flowers throughout the spring. 4. Mulch rhubarb with a thick layer of well-rotted manure to keep it healthy and reduce moisture loss through the soil. Take care not to cover the crown. 5. Keep an eye out for slugs as the weather warms. Pay attention to soft, new growth, which slugs love. Use nematodes, beer traps or night-time hunts with a torch. This month at the nursery it’s all about bedding, patio and hanging basket plants. We will pot up tens of thousands in the next few weeks, so they are ready for you to plant into baskets from mid-April, or to plant out from mid-May onwards. We are very conscious this year that there will be a lot of patriotic red, white and blue colour schemes so we have ordered lots of extra plants in those colours! Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - new arrivals by Roger Hill
March is traditionally the busiest month for lambing here in Devon. Long working hours. Sleepless nights. 24/7 care, but very rewarding. Ask any shepherd and they will say it is the most magical time within the farming calendar. I’m sure it was the same 11,000 years ago when the first sheep were domesticated. The next busy period is usually shearing in early summer and my back is testament to the thousands I have clipped! Today though, it is popular to winter shear before the ewes lamb. It enthrals me to watch the skill of the young shearers and how quickly the ewes adapt by eating an extra breakfast (see photo right). Many towns like South Molton were originally built by the wealth of the wool trade, and it remains such a versatile and sustainable commodity. Not just for clothing but carpets, duvets, insulation and even as a mulch. Unfortunately the 3kg to 4kg of fleece is now worth very little, but for the long term health of the sheep they have to be shorn each year. There was one exception in Australia where one ram had escaped the gathering for more than six years. The Queen’s Jubilee - looking back as preparations begin Communities across North Devon are busy making plans for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. As we look forward to marking Her Majesty’s incredible 70 year reign, we’re taking a look back at some of the special commemorations since her Coronation. While there have been several jubilees, it was perhaps the Silver Jubilee in June 1977 which was the most memorable, and photographer Gordon Bray has sent in these wonderful pictures from South Molton. There is a four day bank holiday weekend for this year’s Platinum Jubilee from Thursday June 2nd to Sunday June 5th.

South Molton Town Council are working with local groups to plan a series of special events including street parties in The Square, music and themed jubilee markets. Arts Destination South Molton is running a Heritage Crafts Day in the Pannier Market on Friday June 3rd. They’re looking for people working in rural heritage skills to join in - for example; hurdle making, willow weaving, ironwork and blacksmithing, beeswax candle making, felting & working with natural dyes. The real ‘good life’ part 3 - the arrival of spring An experiment in sustainable living, by Amy Rhodes
Amy Rhodes lives on a smallholding in Chulmleigh, and along with three generations of her family is on a journey of sustainable living. They aim to produce all their own food for a year, only buying sugar, flour and salt. Mid February and early March feels like the start of the farming and gardening year to me. Signs of spring are everywhere, lambs are being born and we can finally get started with sowing vegetable seeds. It is a busy time, but a rewarding one. Recently I brought my six ewes into the barn ready for lambing (pictured right). The first ones should be born before the end of February. It is wonderful when they first go outside and skip around the fields People sometimes ask me how I can eat the animals that I have reared. It isn’t easy, but I believe that if I am going to eat meat I would like to know where it has come from, and that the animal has had a good life, which I try to give them. I also have my breeding animals which I hope will be with me for life so I can get to know them, get attached and form a relationship with them. When the calves and lambs are born I know that most of them will eventually become meat so I try not to get too attached. It is always a sad day when they leave though. In the last week I have begun sowing seeds, all in trays inside at the moment until it warms up. I’ve sown onions, chard, Brussel sprouts and chillis, plus some garlic in pots in the greenhouse since the ones I planted in the garden never came up, and I have some broad beans outside which are doing well. To keep things interesting with cooking, my parents and I decided to do our own version of ‘The Great British Menu’. Each of us cooked a meat and a vegetarian meal and a pudding. I enjoy the challenge of cooking with what is available from our North Devon smallholding and creating tasty meals. March is a busy month but an exciting one as new life begins to appear. Community News pages 50-54 Goodbye baby! Well known midwife retires Debbie Thorne has looked after mums and babies in the South Molton area for the past 19 years, but now she is retiring this month after a 30 year career as a midwife in North Devon. Deb, who lives in Warkleigh, was a community midwife in Barnstaple before moving to work more locally in South Molton in recent years, and says she has really enjoyed being part of the local community. Well known for her approachability and practical advice, she has been with some families for five pregnancies - and is now starting to see babies she delivered, growing up and having their own children! Her family say Deb has never lost her enthusiasm for pregnancy, birth and babies. She plans to spend her retirement helping her husband with his local electrical business, caring for her menagerie of pets... and awaiting her own grandchildren! Pannier market at awards Bury Market in Lancashire scooped top prize in the Great British Market Awards, but the team behind South Molton Pannier Market left the competition with “their heads held high” after finishing in the top 10 for the second time. The prize giving ceremony was held in Birmingham on February 3rd. Melanie James said, “We could not be prouder of our wonderful ‘little’ market. We may not have won, but our attendance at the Great British Market Awards highlighted what an achievement it was to have made it into the top 10 against some very big city markets.” They thanked everyone who voted for them, and stallholders and customers.

Trees for Queen’s Green Canopy West Buckland School students have planted 100 hazel, 100 birch, 70 wild cherry and 130 mixed species of hedgerow trees, to provide food and habitat for wildlife. They are focusing on sustainability to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, by taking part in Her Majesty’s Green Canopy initiative. As well as inviting everyone to plant new trees, the Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 ancient woodlands across the United Kingdom, and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate her seven decades of service to the country. Students said that it was wonderful to see birds and hares around the planting site which could enjoy the berries from the trees, as well as using the undergrowth for nesting and for protection.
Tourism awards for attractions The Nectary Restaurant at South Molton’s Quince Honey Farm has been selected as a finalist in the Devon Tourism Awards 2021-22 in the ‘Café/tea room of the Year’ category. Rock and Rapid Adventures at South Molton is also a finalist in the ‘Experience of the Year’ category at the awards being announced on March 10th.

New films look at ‘unnoticed’ South Molton “It may not be a big place, even by North Devon standards, but South Molton is perfectly formed and definitely special,” says acclaimed local poet Richard Westcott. Rally club on the move

South Molton Vintage Rally Club’s spring tractor and commercials run will be held on Sunday April 24th. Classic vehicles will meet at the Central Car Park in South Molton for a 10am departure. Meanwhile the 2022 South Molton Vintage Rally will be on June 4th & 5th as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The new rally site is off Alswear Old Road, opposite South Molton football ground.

Performances of the Shakespeare adaptation ‘Capulets’ will now take place on March 4th, 5th and 11th in West Buckland, Goodleigh and South Molton (see advert page 12). They had been due to be held in January, but were postponed due to Covid.
