Out of this world!
by Karolina Andreasova
2024 seems to have been the year of the aurora borealis in North Devon, but on Thursday, October 10th the night sky lit up with the most spectacular show of vibrant colours yet.
Luckily regular contributor Karolina Andreasova got a tip-off from her friend Vicky Haines in time to capture this phenomenon from Sheep Fair Field in South Molton for our photo of the month. “I said the word ‘incredible’ possibly a hundred times whilst shooting!” said Karolina. “By 10pm the whole sky was illuminated by the most incredible colours. As it was too big for one ultra wide shot, I combined four images for this picture.”
On the far left is a distinct red line which may be a ‘Steve’ (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), an even rarer spectacle only recently discovered by scientists. Little is known about its formation and why it can sometimes appear during an aurora display. You can see more of Karolina art and photography here: karolinaandreasova.com
