Molton Monthly Magazine - February 2026 Welcome to the February edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. We have some good news to share, as the UK Wild Otter Trust has been saved by supporters - who raised ten times the target amount in a matter of weeks. The much-loved charity was forced to find a new home after being evicted last year, now it is secure for years to come thanks to the generosity of the community. Someone must know the ‘Exmoor arsonist’. Fires were started deliberately over Christmas in the same area as similar arson attacks last spring - this has to stop. We had a chilly start to the year, but that meant some clear skies for our intrepid photographers and we have a stunning image of January’s ‘Wolf Moon’ to share with you, from the lens of Chris Metcalfe. Next month, we take a poignant look at the 4th anniversary of the war in Ukraine, from the perspective of a young person who fled the invasion and is now studying at Chulmleigh College - the interview has been conducted by her fellow students. Peter Robinson, Editor & publisher
Molton Monthly Magazine is also published free to read on our website moltonmonthly.co.uk and we have daily updates for news and events on Facebook and Instagram @MoltonMonthly

The cold and frosty weather in the first weeks of January brought about some clear skies at night, allowing hardy photographers like Chris Metcalfe to capture some stunning celestial magic! On January 3rd the ‘Wolf Moon’, the first full moon of 2026, lit up the sky at night and Chris ventured out into the bitterly cold evening at Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. After thawing out, he said, “Dunkery Beacon was quite colourful this evening! Were you one of the people at the summit?” The next full moon is the Snow Moon on February 1st. Suspected arsonist strikes several times on Exmoor
Firefighters dwarfed by the flames and inset, work continued for hours over several days
Detectives are investigating a series of “deliberate fires” which burned through large swathes of land on Exmoor. The suspected arson attacks happened in the same area as similar blazes last March, at West Anstey Common and Meldon Common. This time six fires were started over five days, starting on Christmas Day. Dozens of firefighters from across the area, including a crew from South Molton, spent hours battling the flames which were fanned by strong winds late into the night. PC Julian Fry of Devon and Cornwall Police, said, “It is a criminal offence that destroys wildlife habitats, threatens historic sites and puts lives at risk. Arson is punishable by prison or a large fine.” If you have any information call the police on 101 using crime reference: 5025039466

Help create a wildlife corridor Volunteers are needed to help plant a wildlife corridor and small woodland at Woodside Stables near North Molton. Wildlife corridors help to provide a protected route between various more isolated habitats and are said to increase biodiversity by sheltering and feeding mammals, birds and invertebrates, helping to ensure their survival. “We will be revisiting this site to plant a 320 metre wildlife corridor, that’s 1650 trees and shrubs! We will also be adding a small, widely spaced woodland of 125 trees. Over time, these will seed and spread naturally,” said Kathy Sturgeon from the organisers Protect Earth. There was already a small, ancient woodland on the land and the trees being planted include hawthorn, crab apple, hazel and rowan, which will help to feed the local wildlife, as well as a further 125 larger trees such as oak and beech to increase the original woodland. It will take place on Saturday, March 6th and Sunday, March 7th (10am to 4pm) and volunteers can spend as much time as they can spare over the weekend. No experience is needed, and training, tools and refreshments will be provided. The group Protect Earth first planted trees on the site in 2023 and returned last November to create a 400 metre wildlife corridor to help the landowners boost biodiversity. To take part you can register online here: protect.earth/events/treeplanting-south-molton-march-2026

BBC radio programme to be broadcast from village hall Chittlehampton’s recently renovated village hall will play host to BBC Radio 4’s popular ‘Any Questions’ panel show on the evening of Friday, February 20th. “The ability to host such a prestigious event is a direct outcome of the recent hall upgrade which was a fine example of our community working together to create a warm, bright and energy efficient space,” said village hall secretary Sarah Tierney. Any Questions is topical discussion programme in which a panel of personalities from the worlds of politics, media and elsewhere are posed questions by the audience. Free tickets are available - see the graphic opposite for details. Doors open 6.30pm.

Double donation for community hospital
South Molton Community Hospital is celebrating two major donations which will enhance patient care on the Hugh Squier Ward. The hospital’s League of Friends has provided £120,000 (pictured above) to create four new wet rooms at the bedded ward.
22
Contact Molton Monthly Magazine: 07484 290500 email: info@moltonmonthly.co.uk
It has also managed to secure £7,778 from local NFU Mutual fundraisers (pictured below) for equipment that will enable staff to safely lift patients in the event of a fall.
Kate Constable, Royal Devon Hospitals Community Fundraiser, said, “These generous donations are both brilliant examples of how the local community can help enhance patient care beyond what’s possible with NHS funding.” “South Molton League of Friends has been doing this incredibly well for many years and we can’t thank them enough for making such a difference to their local hospital.”
More volunteers needed South Molton Community Hospital League of Friends are looking for people to take over as Chair and Secretary of their organisation from May, as the current officers are retiring. They are also looking for anyone who would like to join their volunteer team. They have four meetings a year plus a few social get-togethers and fundraising events. A spokesman said, “Please consider joining us or taking on one of the vacant roles within our committee, it’s not too time consuming.” Contact the hospital or phone: 07760 325555 Please mention Molton Monthly Magazine when contacting advertisers

Otterly amazing! Charity supporters smash fundraising target Facing eviction from their long term home near Kings Nympton, the UK Wild Otter Trust set up a fundraiser hoping to cover moving costs of £15,000. That goal was reached in just 48 hours, and three months on they have now secured the charity’s future raising a whopping £150,000 through public donations, grants and business sponsorship. “What began as a moment of crisis has become a story of hope, with our volunteers creating a new forever home in just weeks which will be operational by April. Their determination, resilience and kindness have been nothing short of incredible,” said UK Wild Otter Trust founder Dave Webb. “We are utterly amazed and deeply thankful to everyone who made this possible with such generosity”. Long term supporter Colin Anderson bought and donated the four acre Lea Meadow site near Mariansleigh in late 2024. What was due to be an additional location for the charity, and a community garden to help tackle climate change, will now become their permanent home. “I bought the land because I love animals, especially otters. I’ve supported the UK Wild Otter Trust for more than 13 years, and when I came into some money through inheritance, I knew right away that I wanted to put it to good use - it’s as simple as that,” said Mr Anderson. “I wanted to help secure the future of the charity and to ensure that the otters and other wildlife will be looked after for generations to come.”

The new centre will ensure the UK Wild Otter Trust can continue rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing otters for years to come. The charity has praised the overwhelming public response as a powerful reminder of the impact collective support can have on wildlife conservation.

Your jobs to do in February 1. Plant out snowdrops and bluebells in the green. They are available at the nursery now; you will have much better results planting them in the green than planting dry bulbs in the autumn. 2. Plant out fruit bushes, we have a very wide range in stock, including blueberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, raspberries, rhubarb, blackberries, tayberries, loganberries, gooseberries and strawberries. 3. There is still time to plant out bare root hedging, we still have a limited selection available for you. 4. It’s good to get new fruit trees planted this month, they will have time to establish before it gets too dry. We have a large selection of apples, pears, plums, cherries, walnuts, quince, and Asian pears. 5. Our sweet peas have been sown and they will be ready to plant out soon. By the end of the month, we will be potting up thousands of fantastic perennials and alpines, these will grow away rapidly as the weather warms up and can be planted out in about 6 weeks’ time. Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - Valentine joy by Roger Hill
With the festivities over it is time to look ahead, although we have only just finished my wife’s Christmas cake! To be fair it was January before we started it because we were so fortunate with all the other goodies available. We are lucky to have such an array of home and locally produced food. Spare a thought for those less fortunate. I often wonder why people waste so much and how many would crave that which is thrown away. Our cattle are also well fed especially through the harsh weather to keep them warm and healthy. February, albeit a short calendar month, can throw up many vagaries from bitter cold to winter sunshine mixed with rain, sleet and snow sometimes all in one day. I believe that hard frosts help in many ways, from curbing diseases to preventing seedlings germinating too early. It is heartening to see green shoots appear but ideally within the rhythm of the season. My bedtime reading is seed catalogues both for the farm and garden because I don’t envisage a Valentine’s card at my age. With luck though, a cuddle on the fourteenth instead - from our two spaniels! ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)

Bloom team needs you The multi award-winning South Molton in Bloom volunteers are putting out an urgent appeal for keen gardeners and willing helpers to join them in 2026. They won gold twice in the prestigious RHS South West in Bloom awards, but haven’t been in position to enter since their last victory in 2022. “Spring is approaching and we have areas around South Molton that we still maintain and enhance, but we’re desperate for more people to join our friendly team of volunteers,” said co-ordinator Sue Harrison. “This year we’ll have displays supporting England and the football World Cup. Here’s to another colourful year and keeping South Molton a beautiful united town!” South Molton in Bloom has received funding from South Molton Town Council, North Devon Council, Devon County Council and a private sponsor. A recent fundraiser with singer Jason Toft raised £650 enabling them to put up a Tawny Owl box at Gateway Path. They wish to thank all of the many local businesses and organisations that support them in bringing colour to the town. To get involved, email Sue: sue@southmoltoninbloom.co.uk

South Molton Community Garden news by Rebecca Blackman
With the cold start to the year, the Community Garden is looking beautiful in the frosty weather. Many of us have had a little rest from gardening but we’ll no doubt be very busy as spring approaches! Jobs on the to-do list include ordering seeds for the coming year, finalising the planting plan and preparing the plots ready for growing again. The mason bees will be ready to emerge in only a few weeks, as soon as the first flowers bloom. We’ll be Photo by Karolina Andreasova incorporating more early flowering plants in the garden to provide plenty of food for the bees during early spring. Our annual AGM will be held on 30th January 2026, 7pm, at the Methodist Church Hall, North Street. Please come along if you’d like to find out more about the Community Garden. All welcome! If you’d like to join us, please visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon, around 2-3pm weather permitting. Alternatively, please see our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or on Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

News Roundup pages 50 - 53 Historic glass replacement Work is now starting to restore South Molton Pannier Market’s historic glass roof (photo right), thanks to a £234,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Devon based Mercury Construction Ltd have been appointed to carry out the work on the Victorian Patent Glass roof lights, and South Molton Scaffolding have devised a scheme so that the market can remain open during the restoration work. The panels extend along the 77 metre length of the building, which was constructed in 1863. It is one of the largest glazed market hall roofs in the country.

Weather brings problems A cold snap at the beginning of January brought problems on the roads with black ice and a dusting of snow, particularly on high ground (pictured right). The winter chill was followed by Storm Goretti over January 8th & 9th. Although North Devon missed the worst of it this time (winds up to 111mph were recorded in Cornwall), it still brought trees down and rail services on the Tarka Line were suspended.
Free meditation classes There is a weekly meditation class held in South Molton every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Rose and Crown Clinic in South Street. The classes are free and for more information contact Simon Millward: 01769 579829

Emma for England in 2026 Former South Molton Rugby Club player Emma Sing has been named by Red Roses head coach John Mitchell in his 47-player squad for the first training camp of 2026. The 24-year-old picked up a World Cup winner’s medal last year (right) after helping England’s women become World Rugby Champions for the first time since 2014. Emma has won three back-to-back premiership championships with her club Gloucester-Hartpury and ended last season as the league’s top scorer. Not only is she a top-flight rugby player, she completed a degree in bio veterinary science at Hartpury University after leaving South Molton Community College.
