Exmoor’s northern lights

On St. George’s Day a rare astral spectacle adorned the night skies over North Devon and Exmoor, and Louise May was one of those lucky enough to see it and record this special moment for our photo of the month.

“Seeing the Aurora has long been a dream of mine, but I never imagined that I would see it with my own eyes, right here on our beautiful Exmoor. The Northern Lights are quite pale to the naked eye and often can only be seen by the camera, but at times we could see the pillars dance across the sky,” said Louise.

“I was amazed when I looked through the camera to see the stunning display of light and colour - and the Lyrid Meteor - an experience shared by my daughter and I that we’ll never forget.”

“I spend a lot of time on Exmoor and the surrounding areas capturing special connections between couples and the beautiful landscape, so to see this spectacle here and so close to home was incredible.”

New woodland fit for a king

To mark the Coronation of King Charles III, a new woodland called ‘King’s Wood’ is being planted on Exmoor. It is being created at Simonsbath, where Charles and Camilla visited in the summer of 2019 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the UK’s national parks.

“It has been a pleasure to visit the site of King’s Wood and hear about the variety of species to be planted there,” said Somerset Deputy Lieutenant and this year’s High Sheriff, Robert Drewett.

“It is a fitting tribute for the coronation, and very much in keeping with His Majesty the King’s passion for the natural world.”

It is the second major new woodland being created by Exmoor National Park in a bid to help tackle climate change. 13,000 native trees have been planted at Bye Wood, thanks to members of the public, including Molton Monthly magazine, donating trees through the CareMore for Exmoor project.

In pictures - celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla

Pages

18 - 27

Communities across North Devon and Exmoor came together to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Saturday, May 6th 2023.

Despite the mixed weather, events were held in towns and villages across the three day bank holiday weekend, from live screenings of the procession, ceremony and concert, to street parties, tree planting and volunteering.

A royal meeting

Some travelled from Devon to London to soak up the atmosphere. It proved to be a trip to remember for young Lara Crane from Chulmleigh (right), who had the surprise of a lifetime meeting ‘Princess Kate’.

Catherine, Princess of Wales took time to pose with Lara for a picture during a royal walkabout in Windsor ahead of the Coronation Concert on Sunday, May 7th.

Westminster Abbey

Among those from North Devon attending the Coronation at Westminster Abbey was West Buckland student Max Woosey BEM (above), who has raised more than £700,000 for North Devon Hospice.

As part of The Big Lunch on Sunday, May 7th, North Molton’s oldest and youngest residents came together at the street party to cut a stunning Coronation cake baked by Anne Samuel, featuring a crown and all the flags of the Commonwealth countries. Events over the weekend raised £700, which will be split between The Prince’s Trust & The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Jobs to do in June

1. Deadhead early annuals, perennials, and repeat-blooming roses regularly to encourage more flowers.

2. Cut back early-flowering herbaceous perennial, such as Pulmonaria and oriental poppies, if they are looking tired. This will encourage a second flush of flowers.

3. Shrubs which have flowered in the spring on the previous year’s growth, such as Weigela and Exochorda, should be pruned now.

4. Tender plants started off indoors, such as aubergines, courgettes, squashes and tomatoes can be hardened off and planted out this month.

5. Remove strawberry runners during the early part of summer, to avoid energy being diverted from developing fruit.

At the nursery this month we can finally relax, all the potting is done and all the hanging baskets made. We still have lots of bedding, patio and hanging basket plants left if you haven’t done your planting yet.

Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - forest schools

What a celebration the Coronation turned out to be (see photos starting on page 18)! I was impressed with ‘The Big Help Out’ supporting charities on a wet bank holiday Monday.

It reminded me of our visits to see the important work of Forest School projects. We represent a local charity which encourages horticultural education in primary schools. I am amazed at the enthusiasm and commitment of volunteers who help young children learn about the food cycle.

We as trustees provide funds to buy tools, wheelbarrows, gloves etc (photo opposite), plus seeds, compost, plants and fruit trees. The result is that the children are shown how to sow crops and tend to them through the season. They then learn to harvest, prepare, cook and most importantly taste the fruits of their labours.

One of the volunteers did relate the story of apple pressing with the juice coming out as a brown liquid. ‘Yuk’ was the cry from the children... until they tasted and loved the flavour! We feel it is so important for children to learn about food production and preparation, albeit on a small scale.

Hopefully they will become the next generation of growers, chefs and consumers. ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)

South Molton school’s pupils banned from shop over shoplifting allegations

The Spar Shop has banned all South Molton Community College students from going into the town centre store, following the alleged theft of stock running into “tens of thousands of pounds.”

Devon & Cornwall Police are working with the school’s management team and the business to tackle the issue. It’s reported that other shops in the town have also been affected. In a letter to parents, the school said, “We place heavy emphasis on community values with our students when at school, and we would ask that you reinforce this at home if you feel your child/children may be involved in some way.”

The letter states that it is, “a small minority of pupils tarnishing the reputation of other students and the school.”

“Spar may be looking to prosecute offenders as their loss of stock is now in the tens of thousands of pounds, and some of their staff have also been subjected to abuse by students when suspected shoplifters have been challenged.”

“We want to divert students away from actions which are causing great distress in the community, their community, and ensure that they make the right choice and not get involved in actions that may adversely impact on their future life chances.”

South Molton Community College says it is also taking steps to combat reports of bullying at the school, after concerned parents set up an anti-bullying Facebook page which now has 56 members.

One alleged incident is being investigated by police who said, “Devon and Cornwall Police are aware of allegations of bullying linked to pupils from South Molton Community College, and our enquiries continue.”

Roads flood in heavy rain

Heavy rain at the beginning of May left several local roads flooded, with the Kings Nympton, Umberleigh and Chulmleigh areas reported to be the worst affected.

It peaked on May 9th, leaving the A377 barely passable near the Portsmouth Arms, also the B3226 from South Molton, and the road from Kings Nympton to Head Bridge towards the railway station (right).

Despite a wet April and start to May, the area remains officially in drought after last year’s exceptional dry spell and South West Water says the hosepipe ban remains in force across most of North Devon.

Weather forecasters say more than 3 inches of rain fell in the first few days of May, 137% of the normal average for the whole month.

‘100k’ Swimbridge drugs raid

Two men from Bideford were arrested when police discovered a large suspected cannabis farm at a property in Swimbridge.

Officers from Devon & Cornwall Police seized production equipment and suspected cannabis plants with an estimated value of £100,000 in a raid carried out on April 27th.

Police say a man in his 70s was arrested on suspicion of producing a Class B drug, and a second man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of cultivating a Class B drug. Both men are from Bideford and have been released on bail until June 8th pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or by telephone on 101, quoting reference 50230127302.

Alternatively, if you can assist police with this or any other suspected crime, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or the charity’s website: crimestoppers-org.uk

A361 crash - drug arrest

A 27-year-old man from South Molton was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving while under the influence of drugs, following a collision on the link road which left a motorcyclist with “life threatening” injuries.

The A361 was closed for more than seven hours on Sunday, May 14th. Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a blue Renault Traffic van, a white Nissan Qashqai and a red Honda motorcycle at around 12.55pm on the A361 at Rackenford. As a result of the collision, the motorcycle rider, a man in his 40s, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital.

If you witnessed the incident or have any information or dashcam footage that could help with enquiries, please contact police via their website or call 101 quoting reference number: 50230141536. The man arrested has been released on bail until August 11th.

Chittlehampton hall upgrade

Following consultations with the community, a planning application has been submitted for the refurbishment of Chittlehampton’s ageing village hall.

The hall committee says work will be carried out in phases as grants and fundraising allow, adding, “When complete, it will bring this 70 year old hall up to modern standards - it will be a community facility for the village to be proud of.”

The plans include a new roof, toilet extension, external cladding to improve insulation and weatherproofing, alterations to the internal layout, stairs to a loft area, a refurbished kitchen and the installation of doors from the main room to access a new veranda and patio - to make the most of the hall lawns and the views across the valley.
