Welcome to the July edition of Molton Monthly. This month marks eight years since I took over publishing the magazine - how time flies! It has grown significantly, evolved and won awards, but community and sustainability remain at its heart. A massive thank you to all of the advertisers, contributors, my delivery team and you the readers for your continued support.

The General Election is on July 4th, the first since December 2019. In that time we’ve racked up five Prime Ministers! David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Whatever the result, let’s hope we can move towards a sustainable future and a society with less division. The Parliamentary Candidates seeking your vote in North Devon are on p50.

In this issue, the roadworks on the Link Road are rumbling on until at least September. It is odd that this update was sent to councils, but not so far as I’m aware to local media (despite requests for information).

Plus, we have D-Day 80 coverage, South Molton Vintage Rally photos and a packed what’s on section - lots to do this July!

Acclaimed motorcycle sports photographer Haggis Hartman was in the perfect spot to capture this spectacular action, even down to the blades of grass sent flying by Dan’s Honda! The next racing will be the club’s 25th anniversary at the picturesque Sloley Park, Berrynarbor on the North Devon coast on August 3rd and 4th (see advert page 12)

Woman and dogs rescued from fire

A woman and her six dogs have been rescued by fire crews from a blaze that broke out in the thatched roof of a cottage on West Street in Bishops Nympton. South Molton Fire Station were called-out at around 6.20pm on Sunday, May 26th and were joined by eight crews from North and Mid Devon and a water bowser from Exeter - it took around seven hours to bring the

flames under control and prevent them spreading to neighbouring properties. Other animals at the property included llamas and horses, but they were outside and not harmed, the fire service said.

Obituary - Barry Price

Former South Molton resident Barry Price passed away on April 7th, 2024 aged 80. Barry joined the Royal Air Force as a ‘Boy Entrant’ and rose to become a commissioned officer working for some of the most senior RAF Commanders. He was an outstanding athlete excelling in football and marathon running.

Following retirement, he became well-known in the town, maintaining his interest in the Armed Forces through his membership of the Royal British Legion. Sadly missed by his brother Colin, friends and former RAF colleagues.

In brief, our packed Five Day Fair is as follows:

Tuesday 23rd – Opening evening starts at 6pm by Chulmleigh Town Hall with the opening, crowning of the Queen, North Devon Pipes and Drums, Children’s Races and back by popular demand entertainment from Higher Beings.

Wednesday 24th – Craft Market and Country Fair with Sheep Show. Vintage Vehicles and Tractors, Dog Show, Falcon Display, Flower and Produce Marquee, Entertainment and Food.

Thursday 25th- Tennis Tournament, Sports Day, Motor Scavenge and Kid’s Disco.

Friday 26th – Treasure Trail, Junior Football, Clay Pigeon Shoot.

Saturday 27th – Coffee Morning, then an afternoon of Fun and Games, entertainment to include Borderline Morris and the reintroduction of the Road Race. The day will culminate in a Street Party with Live bands and Street Food.

Troubled Link Road project expected to be ‘finished’ nine months late

Local councils have been sent information stating that the main parts of the A361 Link Road improvement works will now be completed “in late September”, nine months late and the third new deadline set.

Transport cabinet member at Devon County Council, Councillor Andrea Davis wrote, “I know this will be very welcome news and I would be grateful if you would pass on my thanks for the public’s forbearance, support and tolerance.”

The £67 million project, designed to improve safety and reduce congestion, should have been finished in December last year. Despite being scaled back due to spiralling costs, it was first delayed until spring 2024, then summer and now at least September.

Devon & Cornwall Police reported that average speed cameras will be in place this summer over an 8 mile stretch between Landkey and North Aller Cross.

Landscaping will continue over the winter.

“This is the biggest investment North Devon has had into the transport infrastructure for decades and I am very pleased to have been able to do something for my local community. Not quite all finished, but tree planting/landscaping won’t be as disruptive has it has been,” added Cllr Davis.

Events were held across North Devon on Thursday, June 6th to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Communities including Burrington lit beacons at 9.15pm (opposite page) as part of the International Tribute.

In South Molton, the town band played a selection of songs from the era, alongside Mike Latham’s World War II Willys Jeep.

It was on the beaches and cliffs of North Devon that thousands of troops perfected the art of breaching the fortified Normandy coast in preparation for the D-Day landings in 1944, to help defeat the Nazi occupiers in France and liberate Europe from tyranny.

Sun shines on vintage rally

Crowds flocked to the 2024 South Molton Vintage Rally, held at Frankhill Farm, Rackenford over the first weekend in June.

A wonderful celebration of farming heritage and rural life in North Devon, visitors were able to enjoy watching traction engines in action cutting logs and baling hay. Perhaps the stars of the show were the vintage tractors which drew one of the biggest crowds to the parade ground.

Classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles and stationary engines were also on display, while the popular Sheep Show entertained the crowds, young and old! Every year South Molton Vintage Rally Club donates thousands of pounds to local charities and good causes raised by its local events.

Jobs to do in July

1. Keep your summer baskets going by watering daily and feeding weekly, dead head regularly to stop the plants from going to seed.

2. Cut back Delphiniums and Geraniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second flowering period. Feed after cutting back.

3. Take softwood cuttings from shrubs such as Pyracantha, Cotinus, Hydrangeas and Spiraea.

4. Sow biennials, such as foxgloves, honesty, forget-me-nots and wallflowers, for blooms next year.

5. Pick courgettes before they become marrows. Courgettes grow incredibly fast so they need to be picked promptly when they reached the optimum size.

This month we get a bit of a break in the nursery, apart from watering and weeding there isn’t much to do.

Hopefully you are also enjoying your garden for the summer, with all your baskets, pots and borders looking fabulous, time for a barbecue!

Life - the tortoise and the hare

I was asked by Peter, our editor, to take some photos of our visit to the Devon County Show, one of which I could use for this month’s article. Honestly, there were so many choices from prizewinning cattle and sheep, to both modern and vintage machinery. Crafts in abundance and so many countryside pursuits from heavy horses to dog agility.

All this plus much much more can be found at our forthcoming local agricultural shows such as our Mid Devon Show on July 27th swiftly followed by North Devon on August 7th and others. To me though it is the people that make these events. Catching up with friends old and new. Discussing our respective lives including ups and downs.

Two aspects come to the fore - mental health and safety awareness. Farmers typically work alone and for long hours. Pressure can build in an effort to get the job done resulting in stress and accidents.

That’s why I chose the adjacent photo. Not for novelty but as a lesson. It’s not always wise to be the hare in striving for the finishing line. Why not be the tortoise? Slow down, take a deep breath and you’ll get there calmly and safely.

Go slow - giant tortoises debuted at this year’s Devon County Show

Organisers say that plans are progressing well for the return of South Molton’s popular carnival in October, with the theme of ‘Be Yourself’.

It is set to take place on Saturday, October 12th, with the main parade setting off around the town at 6pm.

Parade entry forms & conditions are now available on their Facebook page (South Molton Carnival 2024), together with the ‘Carnival Ambassador’ application form. You can also download a drawing competition template for younger children.

Printed copies are available from the Carnival Communication Points; Bar 27, The Cheese Larder, Rachael’s Bakery, The Rotary Shop & The Amory Centre in South Molton. Posters are being distributed soon.

Last held in 2018, South Molton Carnival had to be cancelled due to bad weather in 2019 and then Covid restrictions in 2020.

The volunteers organising this year’s parade say a lot of hard work has already been done to put on a great event for the community.

Community Garden News

The weather has been on our side recently and it allowed extra team days on several consecutive weekends, in addition to our regular Thursdays. We’ve made amazing progress in such a short time!

The sweetcorn, potatoes and leeks are all planted now, as are the group beans. We’re starting to get on top of the grass mowing and strimming and the garden is looking wonderful.

We’re very excited to announce a new live music project from the garden called ‘Songs From the Shed’. Our first music session will be held at the Community Garden (at the top of the Sheep Fair Field) on Saturday, July 6th at 2.30pm. Bring refreshments to enjoy and share. Suggested donation £1 for members, £2 for non members. In case of poor weather, we’ll move the music to the YMCA on Mill Street. General Election 2024 - six candidates for North Devon

The list of Prospective Parliamentary Candidates standing in the North Devon constituency for the 2024 General Election on Thursday, July 4th has been finalised.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day.

County show gets sun and rain

Tens of thousands of visitors flocked to the Devon County Show, which this year was supporting the charity Bowel Cancer West. Held over May 16th-18th, the sun gave way to heavy rain on the Saturday leaving dozens of drivers having to be towed off the site at Westpoint by tractors.

North Molton shop opening

A new community shop, café and meeting space is opening in North Molton in July.

After a long fundraising campaign the volunteer team behind the project say they are finally ready to go.

“We have signed the lease and have the keys, and we look forward to welcoming you all,” said Dave Heath, secretary of the North Molton Community Shop.

“The interior has been decorated, secondary double glazing fitted, new lighting and heating has been installed. A manager has been appointed and we’re now placing orders for equipment and services.”

Schoolchildren help at turf cutting for village’s new homes

The first turf has been cut to mark the start of construction at a new housing development in North Molton by Westcountry housebuilder Cavanna Homes.

The development of 39 open market and affordable homes has been named Hollywell Meadow, after a unanimous vote by pupils at North Molton Primary School.

Five children from the school took part in the ceremony, with their Headteacher Angela Fernyhough, alongside Parish Council Chair Sir Richard Peek, North Devon District Councillor, Liz Bulled and Director of Land and Design at Cavanna Homes, Michael Newman. The scheme will include a village green, allotments, a play area and a footpath to the village sports and community centre.
