Molton Monthly - July 2023
Welcome to the July edition of Molton Monthly. It is heartwarming to see that love is in the air, as traders Jo and Stafford got married at the awardwinning South Molton Pannier Market, where they have both worked for many years (cover photos; David & Amanda Glover) - congratulations!
The rural show season is well and truly upon us and we have photos inside from the superb South Molton Vintage Rally. Coming up next are the Mid Devon Show, Chulmleigh Old Fair (programme p12) and then the North Devon Show - Molton Monthly is once again sponsoring the latter two.
We have several reports this month featuring inspiring young people, with Eco awards and national horse riding accolades, alongside charity fundraising and building sustainable homes in the Exmoor farming community.
On the subject of sustainability, there’s an appeal to help plant new wildflower meadows, which the magazine is supporting as an Exmoor National Park partner.
And finally, with the school summer holidays approaching we have a what’s on section packed with great things to do!

Light in the shade
by Chris Metcalfe

“You will all want to know how I saved the world yesterday evening,” wrote photographer Chris Metcalfe on his popular Instagram feed (@farmertorque).
He described the scene in this Exmoor woodland (left) as like an alien attack, imagining “strange flying machines murmuring in the sky above, sending light death rays everywhere - the whole shebang!”
Like any true superhero, Chris set up his camera on his tripod (to thwart this intervention from outer space!), and captured this beautiful light dappled aura - chosen as our photo of the month.
After a dank start to the year, we’ve perhaps all be a bit giddy seeing the sun again (without the record breaking temperatures of last year), some maybe decidedly delirious!

Town’s last bank set to close
Lloyd’s Bank has announced its South Molton branch will close on September 19th “following an in-depth review.”
Despite being refurbished recently, Lloyds says the number of people using the town’s last bank has plummeted, as the use of online and phone banking increases.
Banking services for Lloyds and other banks are available at the Post Office in South Molton’s Spar Shop, and the bank’s branches in Barnstaple and Bideford are set to remain open. Lloyds say a ‘community banker’ will visit the town regularly after the closure and they’re looking at locations.
Locals took to Molton Monthly’s Facebook page to voice their anger at the decision.
Jacky Hiscock wrote, “More houses being built and they close the last bank!”
Ruth Hackman said, “It’s disgraceful - the waste of money doing the refurbishments, and a growing town without a bank. I feel so sorry for those who don’t have online banking. Use a cashpoint & draw out cash and use it - don’t let this cashless society come to fruition.”
In a statement, Lloyds said the number of personal banking customers has fallen by half since 2018, and business users by 63%. The number of people using the cash machine has also dropped by around 40%.
The bank says it will consult the local MP, charities and community organisations about the impact of the closure, especially for older people and those with access issues.

We’re getting married, in the market!
For years they have both worked at South Molton Pannier Market, Stafford Curle selling veg and Jo Walker selling flowers, and on Sunday, May 28th their workplace was transformed into a wedding venue as the couple said ‘I do’.
The marriage ceremony was conducted by Celia Long Howell in front of family, friends and fellow market traders. The grand pannier hall was dressed up to the nines with an orange theme to match the bride’s bouquet and dress, which had lace trim added by another local business person, Claudia Bento (Alterations Repairs Tailoring by CB).
“We have chosen to marry where we both work. We live in South Molton and it’s a fantastic community,” Jo told Molton Monthly.
It was the first ever wedding at the award winning Pannier Market, and the management team passed on their congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Curle. The reception was also held in the hall, with food, music and dancing.

Rural life on show
Photos by Peter Robinson
The annual South Molton Vintage Rally was bathed in sunshine at its new location at Frankhill Farm near Rackenford on the first weekend of June.
Thousands of visitors were treated to a taste of rural life from times gone by, with vintage bailers, tractors, steam rollers and engines, classic cars & motorcycles and more.
“Thank you to the members and friends who so generously helped during the rally weekend, as well as during the planning and preparation to transform the field to accommodate the show. Teamwork at its best!”, said SMVRC’s Linda Regan.
“A huge thank you to all the exhibitors and
Classic cars, tractors and steam rollers on display their gleaming machines and everyone who visited over the weekend.”
The rally raises thousand of pounds every year which is donated to local charities and good causes.

Lauren rides for England
The Year 10 student at South Molton Community College said her selection for the squad was, “A dream that I have worked so hard for in the last 10 years has paid off.”
England were competing against Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland in a series of races involving a mix of turns, handover, skill, vaulting and galloping against other the teams.
Lauren says she would like to carry on her riding and become a jump jockey - her ambition would be to ride in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National at Aintree.
Headteacher David Lewis said, “We are very proud of Lauren’s achievements and the other riders from our school who were competing at the show. As a school we endeavour to support this passion for riding among our students.”

Sowing new Exmoor meadows
An appeal has been launched to help create new wildlife rich meadows on Exmoor.
People are being urged to donate to the CareMoor for Exmoor ‘Sowing the Seeds’ fund to help the project grow - if you take part you can receive an Exmoor Meadows greetings card and certificate (pictured right).
The money raised will help fund new equipment and training, and a new wildflower nursery is being developed.
“Meadows attract a multitude of wildlife and often support flora and fauna that struggle to thrive in other habitats,” said Lucy Cornwall, the Sowing the Seeds Project Officer.
“Species-rich meadows are ‘climate sinks’ which help combat climate change. Diverse and deep-rooted plants store a substantial
amount of carbon in soil, and permanent grasslands help to protect soils which can mitigate against soil erosion and flooding.”
Donations can be made at national park centres or online: caremoorforexmoor. enthuse.com/cf/sowing-the-seeds-appeal

Jobs to do in July
1. Cutting back plants in baskets followed by feeding can encourage new growth and help revive tired displays.
2. Cut back Delphiniums and Geraniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second flowering period. Feed after cutting back.
3. Take softwood cuttings from shrubs such as Pyracantha, Cotinus, Hydrangeas and Spiraea.
4. Sow biennials, such as foxgloves, honesty, forget-me-nots and wallflowers, for blooms next year.
5. Make sure you leave a dish of fresh water out for the birds and hedgehogs.
The bedding plant season for this year has only just finished, but we are already planning for next year!
Later this month we will be off to Banbury for the Summer Showcase at Ball Colegrave. We buy most of our plug plants from them, and this is our opportunity to view all of their new plants which will be available for you in 2024.
Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - debating skills
by Roger Hill
How lucky was the Devon County Show with three dry days, considering only a week earlier many of the vehicles had to be towed out of the Sheep Association event in East Devon.
Something that sparked media interest at the show, including BBC Spotlight, was the Devon Young Farmers Club agricultural debate - ‘to farm or not to farm’ was the title. It asked the question; ‘is there enough opportunity for the next generation in agriculture’? There was an interesting discussion about the challenges in the industry and how these can be overcome.
It coincided with government announcements about various policies including the Sustainable Farming Incentive. This is intended to support farmers in combining a sustainable farm business with a healthy natural environment. Unfortunately very little detail has emerged even after two years of consideration, and as farmers we need to plan ahead for the long term.
In the meantime, harvest is in full swing at home as the photo (opposite) of my tractor shows with quality not quantity being the order of the day. Returning to shows, I hope to see you all at our local Mid Devon Show on July 22nd set in the grounds of the glorious Knightshayes estate.
‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)

Land appeal for young families
Can you help Exmoor’s next generation create their own new home? An appeal has been launched to find landowners who will sell a plot to a young local family in North Devon to build their own affordable home.
“We encourage you to show your generosity and do your bit to support the next generation on Exmoor, enabling young people to continue living where they call home,” said Megan Hunt from the group Exmoor Young Voices (EYV).
As well as finding cost effective parcels of land for self-build projects, the group also needs contributions of building materials, skills, equipment and tool loans, and funds to support those trying to create homes so they can live and work on Exmoor.
EYV is supporting local young people on the moor interested in building their own affordable homes.

South Molton Community Garden
by Rebecca Blackman
What a wonderfully busy month at the garden! The new shed is now complete and we have been spending time rearranging everything to suit the new space.
Our most recent team day was well attended, with over 30 people (above). We planted the corn, weeded and tidied beds and washed, labelled and organised the tools ready for the new shed.
We have some yellow courgette plants in the ground with more squash soon to be planted. The potatoes look good but the dry weather has made it difficult to keep seeds watered, so some haven’t sprouted.
There is still ongoing work to increase our water storage capacity, with two new water butts installed, now we need some rain!
We welcome new members! If you’d like to join us, come along on a Thursday afternoon, weather permitting, around 2pm. No gardening experience needed. Email us at: somocogarden@gmail.com
