Molton Monthly - January 2024 Welcome to the January edition of Molton Monthly. This first issue of the New Year is packed with community positivity. I think we are lucky to live here in North Devon, surrounded by beautiful coast and countryside. On the cover as we head into 2024 are the fab folk from ‘Santas on Bikes’ who raised more than £2,000 for Children’s Hospice South West with their latest ride. They were met by town Mayor Jacqui Footman, and I took the opportunity to ask her to write a New Year message for you which you can read inside. Planting is getting underway at the new Kings Wood on Exmoor, thanks to an amazing gift of £25,000 in memory of West Buckland couple Denys and Cicely Richards. There were so many great events locally in December, and there’s a photo feature from one of the most popular, the annual Christmas Fatstock Show. The brown hare, or Lepus europaeus, is known for its long legs, black-tipped ears and fast running. Britain’s fastest land mammal, it can reach speeds of 45mph. It can be difficult to spot these enigmatic creatures especially, if like this one, it is hiding in deep undergrowth up on Exmoor. Photographer J. Ladner recently moved to North Devon and is already immersing herself in nature and her passion for photography, “We were lucky enough to spot this hare in the rushes out near Picked Stones (Cow Castle area). We were out walking our dog and enjoying the moor.” “We are loving the long walks and stunning views on the moors. I’m a keen amateur photographer with a passion for wildlife photography and all outdoor activities on the moors,” she added. The hare is steeped in our folklore with pagan, sacred and mystic associations, by turns benign, cunning, romantic or most famously in its March courtship rituals, mad! Name change for natural beauty North Devon has become one of 46 newly designated ‘National Landscapes’ in the UK. These are places with national importance, protected for the nation’s benefit, and cared for by local teams with a deep understanding of the things that make these places special. The ‘North Devon Coast National Landscape’ is the new name for what was previously called the North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said, “We’re incredibly fortunate to be blessed with some beautiful countryside and coastline, and our National Landscapes are an important asset for local communities, visitors and our environment.”

The National Landscapes will focus on habitat restoration to ensure the protection of some of our most endangered species, and help more people to enjoy time spent in beautiful places like North Devon. Kings Wood tribute to West Buckland couple A family who made an incredible £25,000 donation to the Caremoor for Exmoor ‘Woods and Trees’ appeal, have planted the first trees in the new ‘Kings Wood’ near Simonsbath. The Richards family, who have a strong connection with Exmoor, wanted to celebrate the lives of Denys and Cicely Richards who lived in West Buckland for many years and loved Devon and Exmoor. The robust chestnut guard protecting the first parkland tree, will bear a plaque dedicated to the couple and the opportunity for other families to do the same has just been launched by Exmoor National Park. Donor Mark Richards said, “My sisters and I are looking forward to spending time here with our children and grandchildren for years to come. The trees and dedication plaque are the perfect way for our parents to be remembered and it’s wonderful to be a part of nature recovery on Exmoor.”

Mayor’s New Year message As we usher in 2024, Molton Monthly asked South Molton Mayor Jacqui Footman for her thoughts as we head into the New Year. Thank you to Molton Monthly magazine for giving me the opportunity to express a New Year’s message for our community. I’d like to wish everyone reading this a positive time of peace and happiness in 2024. I hope that as a community we can continue to unite around the values of kindness, compassion and collaboration. Thinking considerately about and caring for one another, animals, nature, the planet; knowing that when we care for others and our environment, we also are caring for ourselves in the only sustainable way - because everything and everyone is interconnected. For our part, at South Molton Town Council, we want to enhance our community and we will be looking at the values from national community development standards of: - Community empowerment - Working and learning together - Collective action - Social justice, equality and anti-discrimination

Around 100 bikers dressed as Santas were welcomed by South Molton Mayor Jacqui Footman and hundreds of well wishers as they cruised through the town centre on Saturday, December 9th. The ‘Santas on Bikes’ annual Devon ride-out raised at least £2,300 for the charity Children’s Hospice South West, with the grand tour ending up at Little Bridge House in Fremington bringing some festive cheer to the young residents there and their families. The charity’s fundraiser Emma Perry said, “Our families loved seeing the Santas and the amazing gifts and donations were so generous. Thank you also to our South Molton supporters, Lynda Sudlow and the team from sponsors Griffiths, who collected donations and arranged the amazing refreshments for the bikers. This truly was a community effort, thank you.”

Jobs to do in January 1. Now is a great time to get organised for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plan new planting schemes. 2. Plant bare root deciduous hedging plants and trees if the ground is not waterlogged or frozen. 3. Sow sweet peas, Begonias, Lobelia, Salvia and Pelargoniums in a heated greenhouse or propagator. 4. Rhubarb can be planted up to the middle of February. You can also start forcing established plants this month. 5. Carry on feeding the birds. January and February are the toughest months for wildlife in the garden. Water is also incredibly welcome when it is freezing. As a result of the incredibly wet autumn, we will finish potting up bare root Roses, Ornamental and Fruit trees this month. The wholesalers were unable to lift all their stock from the fields before Christmas so delivery will be delayed until mid January. We are back to our part time hours for January and February. Farm Life - New Year plans by Roger Hill
A very happy New Year to you all. It’s often a time to look forward with renewed hope and optimism. Maybe thumbing through holiday brochures seeking summer sun, adventure or relaxation. If you’re a gardener it will be seed catalogues, planning what to grow and whereabouts to plant. As a farmer it is always nice to sit in front of the wood burner of an evening and check out the shiny new machinery on offer in the trade magazines. Price of course is no problem as I imagine driving the largest, most colourful tractor with tea making facilities and televised sports events! Neighbours line up in their fields to marvel at my new purchase. They are cheering and shouting and then start poking me in the ribs, “Wake up! Wake up! I need your help with a pregnant ewe!” Startled from my dreamy slumber by my nearest and dearest, clad in boiler suit, thick coat and wellies, it is time to face the bitter chill and head outside to the lambing shed. South Molton Community Garden - in tribute to James by Rebecca Blackman
The gardeners received some very sad news that James Sendell, a much-loved member of our community, has passed away. James designed and built our field kitchen and also the wonderful new shed and water catchment system. His work in the garden has been so very much loved and appreciated and will contribute to the everyday running of the garden for many years to come. To use the words of my young daughter, James will always be a part of the Community Garden. He will be remembered fondly by us all. With the mixed bag of weather, a few of us braved the frosts, wind and rain to cover some of the communal beds. The wind was so gusty it was blowing the plastic covers off before we could weigh them down! We may lift the covers on a calmer day to pull a few weeds and level the ground.

Bill brings home the cows When author Bill Symondson wrote a book about his childhood on a North Devon farm, he dedicated it to his daughter Georgia Woods. Tragically, Bill would not live to see it published, passing away just before it went to print in August 2023. Now, Heasley Mill based publisher Brambleby Books has teamed up with Georgia (pictured left) to release ‘Bringing home the cows’, Bill’s touching story of growing up as a young boy in the North Devon countryside in the 1960s. Nine-year old Bill moved with his family from the suburbs of London to a dairy farm in North Devon, an idyllic environment where he grew up for the next ten years. Here, daily chores of looking after the cows and helping with the harvest, often turned into disasters or adventures! With his dog Lucy, he roamed the countryside observing wildlife, his passion, encountering birds of prey and his beloved butterflies and moths. In later life he would become a professor of bioscience, spending 30 years researching the diets of insects, birds and reptiles pioneering of the use of DNA to investigate the diet of animals to aid conservation. ‘Bringing home the cows’ is available at Waterstones and direct from the publishers: bramblebybooks.co.uk

Community News pages 50-55 New NHS dental helpline After more than 1,750 people in North Devon signed a petition calling on the government for urgent improvements to NHS dental services, a new phone-in service has been set up. A dedicated helpline has been developed for Devon and Cornwall to help patients find an NHS dentist for routine care and arranging urgent NHS dental treatment for people who do not have a dentist. North Devon MP Selaine Saxby recently met the new Dentistry Minister Andrea Leadsom to stress the depth of the problems in the area, “I would like to reassure residents that Government ministers know exactly how difficult it is for constituents to find a dentist

I have also spoken with local dentists to get their ideas, but fundamentally we need more dentists to undertake more NHS work, which is the first thing the new minister plans to tackle.” Responding to the dentistry petition a government spokesman said, “NHS England and Devon Integrated Care Board are aware of the particular challenges in North Devon and are working with local dentists to enable practices to take on more NHS patients.” “NHS England recently procured additional primary care dental capacity in Devon which means an increase in access to dental services for those patients who do not currently have a dentist.” To speak to the NHS Dental Helpline phone: 03330 063 300
More money for road repairs Meethe Hill and nearby roads at Kings Nympton are on a priority list to be repaired, after Devon County Council was awarded an extra £6.663 million for highway maintenance. The money is being shared out by the government following the scrapping of the HS2 rail line extension to Manchester.

Spread the joy of reading
A new look at local war history
Children’s literacy charity Schoolreaders is looking for volunteers who can help spread the joy of reading to children in primary schools in North Devon. It’s reported that every year, 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. Schoolreaders recruits volunteers to listen to children read in primary schools. Volunteers are asked to listen to children read once a week in term time and to commit to an academic year. Charity founder Jane Whitbread said, “If more children gain pleasure from reading from an early age and their reading fluency and confidence improves too, communities and society will reap the benefits alongside the children themselves.” More information: schoolreaders.org
‘Our Darkest Hour, Our Finest Hour’ is the latest local history book published by author Derrica Hodgson (above). Launched at South Molton Library on December 4th, it looks at how people in South Molton lived during the dark days of World War II. It is available to buy at the Amory Centre, Exmoor Hardware and Simmons Greengrocers in South Molton, with all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal.

Festive cheer at church The popular annual Christmas Tree Festival was held in St Mary Magdalene Church in South Molton over five days ending on Monday, December 4th. One of the highlights at this year’s event was local primary school children singing festive songs and carols (pictured right).

Plough Service celebration The Devon branch of the charity Farming Community Network are holding their annual Plough Service in Bishops Nympton. The Rev. Alison Rogers will lead the service at St Mary the Virgin Church at 3pm on Sunday, January 7th 2024 (advert page 12). It will incorporate a blessing of the soil, seed and the plough and prayers particularly for the agricultural community. “This is an opportunity for the local farming and rural community to meet together to celebrate, reflect and look forward to the coming year’s planting and growing season,” said Jackie Skinner from the FCN. Share offer for new shop The volunteer team working to create a new community shop and hub in North Molton, are launching a share offer so that local people can support the project. The aim is to raise £25,000 towards the £75,000 funding requirement (details pictured right). Rotary donation The Rotary Club of South Molton made a donation of £750 in December to the Saunders Good Samaritan Trust, a charity helping local people in need. It was the second £750 donation they made in 2023.

Vintage rally club thanks South Molton Vintage Rally Club sends their good wishes to all their members and supporters for a happy and healthy 2024. Club spokesperson Linda Regan said. “A huge ‘THANK YOU’ for the generous support given during 2023, which enabled the club to donate over £18,000 to local and national worthy causes.” The 2024 Vintage Rally will be held at Frankhill Farm, Rackenford during the weekend of June 1st and 2nd, and the organisers say they’re hoping for another successful year.

Bloom back for 2024! South Molton in Bloom is set to return to the town in the New Year after taking a break in 2023. The volunteers will be aiming to repeat their success, having picked up gold awards in the RHS South West in Bloom competition in both 2021 (photo right) and 2022. “We are so grateful to all the businesses who keep us going,” said coordinator Sue Harrison. “John Walker Insurance who insures the group, Molton Monthly who help us with publicity, The Welcome Fryer who promote us on their display in the window and also to Day Lewis who allow us to promote our work in their shop window.” Condate Biogas is designing a new display from February in the town’s Day Lewis Pharmacy. A fundraising bingo night is being held at the Conservative Club on March 15th. The ‘In Bloom’ group is also appealing for any knitters who would like to help with the competition to get in touch, along with active gardeners.
