As we settle into another year, it’s heartwarming to be able to feature more amazing local people doing amazing things in this month’s magazine. Our cover story shows James Bevan from Atherington and Dom Thorne from High Bickington, who are part of a crew rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to raise funds and awareness for mental health charities. At the time of writing they’re facing stormy weather and tough currents, but are getting ever closer to the finishing line in Barbados... one stroke at a time (pages 18-19). Closer to home fundraiser Jade Kingdom is planning to run uphill 500 feet, alongside the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway to support North Devon Hospice (page 51). As a North Devon Biosphere Business Partner it gives me great pleasure to report that they are receiving a game-changing £1.37 million grant to invest in the ‘green and blue economy’ where we live (page 27). The North Devon based UK Wild Otter Trust needs your help as they move into a new home (pages 28 & 29), and congratulations to South Molton Pannier Market voted into the top 10 in Britain for the second time (p22). After record high temperatures of 16C over the New Year, the first snow of 2022 fell on Exmoor on January 4th. The temperature had dropped more than 12 degrees in just 24 hours.

Honour for fundraiser Max After camping in his back garden for more than 600 consecutive nights, raising £700,000 for North Devon Hospice, Max Woosey has been awarded the British Empire Medal. West Buckland School student Max (pictured right) received a letter from the Cabinet Office telling him that his hard work had been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. The 12 year old is the second youngest person to be honoured by the Queen. Max said, “I’m so excited by this, but the hospice are the true heroes, they’ve done all the incredible work to look after people. I just hope this award will help raise even more money for them.”

Max, known worldwide as the ‘boy in the tent’, began camping in his back garden when the first national lockdown was announced in March 2020. He wanted to raise £100 for the hospice who had just cared for his friend and neighbour Rick Abbot. Before Rick died, the keen adventurer gave Max his tent and told him to go and have an adventure with it. He has had a trip to 10 Downing Street and been named a Pride of Britain award winner. North Devon Hospice’s chief executive, Stephen Roberts, said: “Every single plaudit that comes Max’s way is totally deserved. And to think it all started from that one moment, when the hospice team came to visit his neighbour. Sometimes life offers you small opportunities that could lead to big things. Be like Max and seize those opportunities with both hands.”

Devon duo aiming to row Atlantic in record time Twenty foot waves, howling gales, sleep deprivation, swirling currents and 3,000 miles of open ocean - one stroke at a time. James Bevan from Atherington and Dom Thorne from High Bickington (pictured right) are battling to row across the Atlantic in just 30 days. They are taking on this epic sea voyage to raise awareness of mental health organisations and the vital work they do, and are aiming to raise £40,000 for their chosen charities. “The thing that is getting me through the pain is the thought of my mum Gaynor’s Sunday roasts!” said Dom, who used to play rugby for South Molton and now coaches the women’s premiership team for the
Exeter Chiefs. “I have always wanted to push my body to the limits, and when offered the opportunity to row the Atlantic Ocean whilst raising money for an amazing cause, I didn’t think twice.”

James Bevan is a former Deputy Head Boy at Chulmleigh College and now works as a sports scientist in the academy at Exeter City Football Club. Headteacher Michael Johnson said, “He was a great role model, always ferociously determined, particularly in PE. He was the last one standing when given a challenge, time and time again. We applaud James for his incredible adventure and send him our very best wishes.” The Cockleshell Endeavour set out from Gran Canaria in December. The crew of four, along with a second boat ‘Atlantic Dagger’, will land in Barbados in early February. Rotating rowing duties, they rarely get more than 2 hours sleep. They can only send short text messages, but near the half way point Dom said, “We cleaned the bottom of the boat today, and had our first swim and clean in ten days - then saw some dolphins, had a glass of port and are back on it again!” Many of the crews taking part are service veterans with their own personal experience of mental health issues.

Pannier Market in UK top 10 South Molton Pannier Market has beaten off competition from more than 1,000 markets in some of Britain’s biggest towns and cities, to be voted into the top 10 for the second time. More than 30,000 votes were cast in the Great British Market Awards, run by the National Association of British Market Authorities, and South Molton has again found itself in the running for the prestigious title of the best market in the country. The final result will be announced at an awards ceremony in Birmingham on February 3rd. New trees for Queen’s Green Canopy

Lady Arran from Castle Hill Estate, Filleigh (pictured above) planted a tree in South Molton for the Queen’s Green Canopy campaign - an initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, which invites people from across the United Kingdom to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ this year. “It was a great honour to be invited to take part,” said Lady Arran. “This is the first of many events which the community are involved with as part of the jubilee celebrating Her Majesty’s 70 year reign.” Organised by Sue Harrison, the South Molton in Bloom coordinator, three trees were planted in a garden area alongside the Sheep Pen car park behind the Amory Centre on January 13th. A Prunus Pink Parasol was donated by Molton Monthly gardening correspondent Ash Moor Nursery, Lady Arran provided a Styrax Japonica Snow Fountain, and the South Molton in Bloom team planted a Euonymus Red Cascade. Site needed for wildflower meadow tribute A mother is appealing for help finding land to create a wildflower meadow in tribute to her late son. Sue Brinkman lost her son Craig (pictured right), affectionately known as ‘Les’ by many locally, in July last year. “I made a promise to plant a wildflower meadow for him. I am looking for a suitable site to purchase, preferably in the North Molton area, but I would be happy to consider sites in the South Molton area too,” said Sue. It doesn’t have to be a large plot so long as it has private access - anything from the size of half a tennis court up to half an acre.

Biosphere wins £1.37m grant to boost ‘blue and green’ economy North Devon UNESCO Biosphere is to receive more than £1 million to promote green growth and investment in the area, while improving wellbeing for local communities through nature based projects. The £1.37 million pound bid was the largest green grant awarded by the government’s Community Renewal Fund. “This award recognises the unique natural assets in our area,” said Tim Jones, Chairman of the North Devon Biosphere Foundation. “These include part of our treasured National Parks, some of the most important wildlife and agricultural assets in Devon and a huge marine area which includes Lundy Island.” Almost 200,000 people live in the biosphere’s catchment area. The new grant funded programme has two linked elements; the ‘Green Biosphere’, focused on woodland, regenerative agriculture and agritech; and the ‘Blue Biosphere’ focused on offshore wind, aquaculture, marine biodiversity and blue carbon. “It is excellent news for northern Devon,” added Selaine Saxby, MP for North Devon. “This project will aim to bring in a further £50 million of private sector investment into the area and potentially create up to 1300 new jobs by 2026.” Molton Monthly is proud to be a North Devon Biosphere Business Partner, and is committed to helping promote conservation, and raise awareness of efforts to tackle the climate emergency. Help needed for new otter rehab centre ‘Twilight over meadow and water, the eve-star shining above the hill, and Old Nog the heron crying kra-a-ark! as his slow dark wings carried him down to the estuary’ - so reads the atmospheric opening line of the much-loved classic Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson. Now, 95 years after the novel’s publication, the North Devon based UK Wild Otter Trust has relocated its rehabilitation centre to a site that was used in the film dramatisation of the book. The land is owned by the Earl of Lichfield, Thomas Anson, who is also president of the charity. “As early as my memory goes back, I have always had ‘Wyndham’ my otter puppet. I have Tarka the Otter and Ring of Bright Water cemented into my mind, and bizarrely ended up owning parts of the River Mole and Taw, and the old mill building and waterwheel used in the Tarka filming!” the Earl told Molton Monthly. “All wildlife needs our help, and I feel very honoured to be a part of this organisation. Their ongoing conservation work is paramount to the continued success for this iconic species.” Volunteers have worked tirelessly to get the new centre up and running, and they saw a record 35 orphaned otter come through their doors in 2021, most have been released but 11 are still being cared for. Jobs to do in February 1. Prepare your seed beds. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, you can cultivate beds and start to warm up the soil with fleece, polythene or cloches in preparation for sowing in the coming months. 2. Cut back shrubs, such as Cornus and Salix cultivars (grown for their colourful stems), down to their bases. 3. Prune overwintered Fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. 4. Prune raspberry canes. It’s your last chance to cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new canes to fruit in the autumn. 5. Trim deciduous hedges before the birds start nesting. At the nursery the potting starts again in earnest this month. Hundreds of varieties of alpines and perennials will be potted up now for sale in March and April, when the soil is moist and starting to warm up. This allows the roots to grow and settle in before the drier summer arrives. Alpines are perfect for smaller gardens, they look great in rock gardens, raised beds and crevices. Farm Life - pond world by Roger Hill
February offers a few glimpses of spring. Yes, there are snowdrops and other brave flowers, but one thing always fascinates me - the arrival of frogspawn is a joy to behold. We usually hear the gurgling sound of frogs before actually seeing them. Ponds are such a rich and vibrant ‘party of life’. Dragonflies, pond skaters, damselflies, water beetles, mayflies, newts and much, much more. It is though, the return of our frogs every February that excites me. How do they know how, when and where to return? Not to be confused with toadspawn which appear as egg strings, frogspawn is such a nature lesson as we watch it develop into tadpoles and ultimately adult frogs. We dug our first, albeit small pond, many years ago and within weeks we had a multiplicity of action which accelerated throughout the year. We have increased our ponds over the years and I would encourage everyone to create one to suit their own garden if they can. Still my optimism for warmer weather is short lived. The real ‘good life’ part 2 - coping with the weather An experiment in sustainable living, by Amy Rhodes
Amy Rhodes lives on a smallholding in Chulmleigh, and along with three generations of her family is on a journey of sustainable living. They aim to produce all their own food for a year, only buying sugar, flour and salt. December and January have definitely seen some variable weather, from very mild to very wet to below freezing. In my vegetable beds I use ‘no dig’ methods, and this seems to help the soil and the plants withstand these extremes. During the mild spell around Christmas many plants actually grew, and on January 5th we had our earliest purple sprouting broccoli ever! Sometimes I panic that we won’t have enough food in the months ahead, but mostly I think we will be alright. The biggest worry are the potatoes as they are such a big part of our diet. I just hope they will last until the first new ones are ready. We recently finished the last of our stored carrots, but still have swedes, parsnips, turnips and celeriac. The greens in the garden are doing well and with the length of days increasing, the hens have started to lay more eggs. We have lots of stored cooking apples. Having stewed apple every day is a bit tedious but at least we are getting some fruit! It is always tempting to start planting when the New Year comes and I am trying to hold off until it gets warmer. Amy with her cow ‘Cammy’

Recently I planted out some broad beans. From the garlic that I planted at the end of October only a few have come up and I think possibly they rotted in the wet weather. I may try some spring varieties or we will be short later in the year. It is fantastic that my parents are so enthusiastic about this project. We all have our different interests and areas of expertise, and it makes it much easier having others to share it with.

Dozens line streets for funeral of rugby player Ben Warren Heartfelt tributes have been paid to popular South Molton rugby player Ben Warren. “The news of his death came as a huge shock to everyone who knew him,” said his sister Amy, who thanked everyone for their support. “Ben was a much-loved and larger than life character. He was someone who once met you never forgot him, and he was always the life and soul of everything.” Ben was hospitalised in November with a severe throat infection. His family say he appeared to be on the road to recovery when he suffered a pulmonary embolism as a result of a deep vein thrombosis. People lined the streets of South Molton as

his funeral cortege headed through the town and passed by the rugby club on December 22nd. Ben, who was 31, had been captain of the second team and was delighted to have been selected to play for the first team this year. He grew up in Filleigh and helped on his parents farm, as well as working with local farming contractors after leaving school. He is survived by his father Gordon Warren, siblings Amy and Laurie, and girlfriend Lucie Slape.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak met local business owners during a visit to North Devon on January 12th. Among those invited to the event in Ilfracombe were South Molton based rugby equipment manufacturer Aramis. CEO of Aramis Rugby, Vikas Mahajan said it was an honour to meet the chancellor. “It was great to have a frank discussion where I laid out challenges faced by small businesses here, including labour and housing shortages, and red tape on exports. He was very understanding and assured us of continuing support for North Devon.” The chancellor had been visiting Ilfracombe based pharmaceutical company Pall Corporation, who have helped with the Covid vaccine rollout and announced a £60 million investment creating 200 new jobs.

Fundraising triathlete Jade Kingdom has set herself a new challenge - she will ‘race’ the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, running UP the 500 foot zigzag path next to it! “Beating the railway or not isn’t really what’s important,” said Jade. “What is important is that whilst being active and working with the local community to have a little fun, we raise some vital funds for the North Devon Hospice - so please support and donate whatever you can.” Jade, who has Downs Syndrome, has already raised more than £20,000 for the hospice. Rare gold coin worth a fortune A metal detectorist has found what is believed to be one of England’s earliest gold coins whilst searching farmland at Hemyock near Tiverton. The coin (right) is made from gold and depicts King Henry III. It is thought to have been made in 1257, and could make half a million pounds when auctioned.

Business magazine Service Dealer presented the awards to owner James Hayes (right). James said, “This is a fantastic achievement for us, especially as we are only a small company when compared to others across the UK.”

In the swim - pupils raise money for defibrillator 83 children swam a combined total of more than 20 miles, to help raise funds to buy a life saving defibrillator for their school. The pupils from years 5 and 6 at South Molton Community Primary School took part in the ‘swimathon’ on January 17th at the town’s swimming pool. They have now raised more than half of the £3,000 needed. Other fundraising events at the school have included a sustainable fashion swap shop, Christmas gift shop, pumpkin trail, teddy bear raffle and a hamper raffle from Lush Hair Salon. Covid cases ‘stabilising’ The number of positive Coronavirus cases hit record levels in January, but with restrictions now easing, they have starting falling again according to official figures. By the third week of January they had fallen 536 to 836 in North Devon, and were down 283 to 605 in Mid Devon - still almost double the number at the same time last month. Devon’s Director of Public Health Steve Brown said, “We know that the Omicron variant is highly infectious, and we are now seeing an increase in hospitalisations in Devon. Thankfully, it’s not leading, to the same extent, to deaths or stays in Intensive Care Units.” Meanwhile more than 85 per cent of those eligible for their Covid-19 booster vaccinations have had their jabs.

Donation for volunteers NFU Mutual and their staff at the local South Molton branch, nominated charity South Molton and District Volunteer Bureau to receive a donation of more than £6,400 last year. The donation comes from a national £2 million ‘Agency Giving Fund’ launched by NFU Mutual. The service is a lifeline for those who do not have friends or family able to help, and volunteer drivers have continued to provide a vital service during the pandemic.

Filleigh cash boost
Cameras on council staff
Filleigh Village Hall is to receive a grant of £36,394 towards the refurbishment of its main hall, meeting room and foyer. The money comes from cash contributions from developers locally, through North Devon Council’s Section 106 fund.
A number of North Devon Council officers will be allowed to use ‘Body Worn Video Cameras’ whilst carrying out their duties from this year. It’s hoped the cameras will help improve safety for staff if they face physical or verbal abuse.
