All smiles as festive crowds enjoy Christmas lights switch on!

Link Road one year late; Remembrance 2024; festive what’s on and much more PLUS inside...

Molton Monthly Magazine - December 2024

Welcome to the December edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. As the first blast of winter swept in, the community turned out in their hundreds to celebrate the big Christmas lights switch-on in South Molton.

My festive message at this time of year is to remind you that when you ‘shop local’, it supports jobs right here where we live and helps our diverse and wonderful rural businesses thrive. It’s also good for the planet, the soul and quite often for your pocket too!

If you’re looking for traditional Christmas events, look no further than this month’s what’s on section. It is bursting with carols, pantos, places to eat, social gatherings and a huge variety of things to do.

In the news this month, it’s perhaps no surprise that the North Devon Link Road works are still rumbling on, and are now 12 months behind schedule. Let’s hope they deliver an early Christmas present to local residents and motorists... and get it done!

Have a very Merry Christmas, and thank you for your continued support in 2024.

A winter’s chill on Exmoor

After a several weeks of mild and calm ‘waiting weather’ the first winds of change blew in, bringing snow and a sharp frost to North Devon and Exmoor as we passed through November.

Our breathtaking photo of the month was captured by hardy local photographer Chris Metcalfe, who braved sub zero temperatures at twilight on ‘the real moor’.

“On my way home from a snowy Exmoor I came across this delightful scene on Molland Common that just had to be photographed,” said Chris. “To the human eye the view was magnificent, if a tad chilly! But cameras cannot match the dynamic range of our eyes, so I was particularly pleased to capture this one.”

“It was taken with my Fujifilm GFX 100ii, very high ISO and with the medium format just about ‘froze’ the cow crossing the road - if it wasn’t frozen already that is!!”

Hunt for owners who abandoned two dogs

An investigation is trying to find out who left two dogs tied to a post in a lay-by on the North Devon Link Road near South Molton.

They were found and taken to safety on Tuesday, October 29th. Both are female - one adult boxer type and one ‘staffie’ puppy (pictured right).

North Devon Council’s Dog Warden team say that both are microchipped, but the details are out of date. A spokesman said, “Our investigation into who left them there is ongoing, and we remain committed to holding those responsible accountable.”

The council said it was on track to rehome the two abandoned dogs, and thanked the public for their support. Anyone with information should call the Dog Wardens: 01271 388870

Festivities begin as radio presenter turns on town’s Christmas lights

With a winter chill in the air, hundreds packed into The Square to watch John Acres from BBC Radio Devon turn on South Molton’s Christmas lights display on Friday, November 22nd.

“I am delighted to welcome so many people to South Molton, our Pannier Market and our shops for the Christmas lights switchon, and that John Acres of BBC Devon is doing us the honour of pressing the plunger,” South Molton Mayor Jacqui Footman told Molton Monthly Magazine

The community event was once again raising vital funds for North Devon Hospice. Continued on pages 20 & 21

The sparkling evening featured music from the local duo Bicycle Repair Man, the crowning of the Snow King and Queen (above), and of course an early visit from Father Christmas! The town also welcomed eight mayors from neighbouring communities to the event.

South Molton Town Council thanked Graham Seatherton for the donation of the magnificent Christmas tree and Dave Quick for delivering it.

Link Road work rumbles on - a year behind schedule

“Several upgraded sections of the North Devon Link Road are due to open by Monday, November 11th,” proudly announced a Devon County Council press release widely distributed online. However, at the same time the contractors Griffiths issued their latest traffic management bulletin announcing road closures and diversions up to at least December 19th.

The £67 million scheme designed to improve safety is now a year late; the original completion date was December 2023. The reality of the council’s statement on ‘opening’ related only to the short stretch between Barnstaple and Landkey, including the new roundabout and footbridge.

North Devon MP Ian Roome told Molton Monthly Magazine, “After nearly four years of construction, I am relieved to hear that the North Devon Link Road project is finally nearing its end. However, given previous assurances that work would be completed by the end of October, it’s disappointing to learn of closures now extending into December. Speaking as a motorist, I share the public’s frustration about what has felt like a long, drawn-out process.”

“For many in North Devon, the top-level planning between the Conservative-controlled Devon County Council and contractor Griffiths will have felt badly disjointed. That is particularly true for residents in Landkey, Swimbridge, Filleigh and various villages around North Molton, who have all had to suffer extremely inconvenient diversions and traffic for long periods.”

Several major parts of the scheme have been dropped to keep within budget. The delays are blamed on problems linked to the Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the cost of living crisis - all impacting materials and the supply chain.

John Lee, Operations Director for Griffiths thanked local people for their ‘patience’, “This has been a complex and challenging project. From the outset ourselves, Devon County Council and our supply chain

partners have worked collaboratively to deliver the scheme, overcoming numerous challenges.”

Devon County Council transport cabinet member Cllr Andrea Davis told BBC Spotlight, “Let’s see what the road is like next year when it is fully open. We’re nearly at the end. I’m incredibly frustrated it has taken this amount of time. I use the Link Road most days, so I’m affected as well. Local people have been incredibly patient, especially all those on the diversion routes.”

“I received an invitation to a celebratory VIP reception for the North Devon Link Road’s reopening. I will certainly welcome the project’s completion when it arrives, but given what has happened, I am not sure celebration is entirely appropriate,” added Ian Roome MP.

Remembrance 2024 marks D-Day 80th anniversary

Communities across North Devon turned out in large numbers for Remembrance services on Sunday, November 10th and Armistice Day commemorations on the 11th.

In South Molton, the Pannier Market was packed with standing room only following the traditional march through the town. Schoolchildren had created poppies that decorated The Square and made wreaths.

This year marked the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Crafters decorated the village pump in Chittlehampton ahead of their commemoration ceremony (below).

Your jobs to do in December

1. Plant up pots and baskets so they look good for Christmas. We still have a large range to choose from, Pansies, Violas, Primroses, Polyanthus, Heathers, Cyclamen, and foliage plants.

2. Improve heavy clay soil by working in plenty of bulky organic matter, such as farmyard manure or composted bark.

3. Finish the autumn tidy-up of leaves from beds and borders. It is especially important to clear leaves from alpines as they will die off if covered for any length of time.

4. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts, and remaining root crops.

5. Prune acers, birches, and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding. The sap falls in autumn to early winter as the plants lose their leaves and become dormant.

For the next few weeks our focus at the nursery moves to making holly wreaths, we are still taking orders if you would like some.

We are open every day until Christmas Eve.

Farm Life - seasons greetings

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year and hank you for your kind comments regarding this column. Also, I do appreciate your support in helping to raise more than £8,000 for my chosen charity Cots for Tots, by purchasing my Tupper the Tractor children’s adventure illustrated books.

It has been both a positive and negative few weeks. We are proud that our son Tim, who runs our vineyard, has won silver for his sparkling wine and bronze for the still white at the Devon Food & Drink Awards. Considering it is the first season to actually have wine in the bottle, it is just reward for his hard work over the last five years (photo opposite).

His worry is that with proposed changes to Inheritance Tax, many small family farms will struggle to be able to hand down to the younger generation.

I have been a long standing supporter of the Young Farmer’s Movement. There are so many skilled and enthusiastic young people out there who fear the rug could be pulled from beneath their feet. We need the next generation to ensure food safety and sustainability in this country especially considering the threat from world instability.

‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)

Calls to reverse ‘farm tax’

It’s claimed that up to 398 North Devon farms could be impacted by the so-called ‘family farm tax’, following the government’s decision to slash inheritance tax relief.

North Devon MP Ian Roome called on the government to reverse its policy, warning it could spell the end of many family farms which have been at the heart of communities for generations.

WW1 soldier’s medal returns home

Private George Joce from Chulmleigh was 25 years old when he lost his life on the last day of World War 1, November 11th 1918. Now, 106 years later, his medal is being returned to his home town and will be looked after by Chulmleigh Academy.

George is buried in Haifa Cemetery, and came from a well-known local farming family. Two of his siblings and his parents are buried in Chulmleigh Churchyard and his name is recorded on the War Memorial in The Square.

Holly Burls from Chulmleigh History Society said, “We were approached by the James Garnett Foundation about repatriating Pte. George Joce’s WW1 War Medal. We feel privileged to have taken part in this story and see his medal placed in the custodianship of Chulmleigh Academy.”

History teacher Dr Catherine McMahon added, “We feel honoured to remember Pte. Joce as a school, and recognise how the experience of war deeply affects families and local neighbourhoods both in this country and across the world.”

Community Garden winter prep

We’ve enjoyed several Thursday afternoons of glorious autumn sunshine up at the garden. The dry weather has given us time to finish off a few jobs in preparation for winter.

Our communal plots have been cleared and covered now (photo right). We still have leeks in the ground and chard for winter harvesting. The raspberries are just about finished and will be cut back after Christmas. More team sessions are lined up for the coming months, so hopefully we’ll be able to weed and tidy the willy-nilly garden, complete the work on the compost bins and organise the sheds.

We’ll be entering a tree for the South Molton Christmas Tree Festival this year. We usually leave the tree decorating to the children and I’m sure it’ll be as busy and colourful as ever, so look out for our tree at the parish church!

We welcome new members. If you’d like to join us, visit the garden on a Thursday at 2pm (weather permitting). Alternatively, see our website: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

£100k bill for polluting river

Taw and Torridge Coaches Ltd has been fined £25,500 and ordered to pay costs of over £80,000 after an estimated 1,000 litres of diesel leaked from tanks on their Barnstaple site into the Taw estuary.

In a case brought by the Environment Agency, the company’s managing director, Mark Hunt from Weare Giffard, admitted being responsible, but blamed the pollution on a nearby petrol station. Tests showed the diesel sold there was of a different type from that in the estuary.

Andrew Fuller of the Environment Agency said, “Mr Hunt consistently denied any wrongdoing even when the evidence was stacked against him and his company.”

Top award for ‘young voices’

Exmoor Young Voices has been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. It is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK - the equivalent to an MBE. A spokesman for the group said, “We wouldn’t be here without you and we look forward to continuing our work to support young residents and workers on Exmoor.”

Rally club donates record £20k to good causes

The largest donation of £3,500 was to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, a charity supported since the club was formed back in 1992. There were 18 other recipients of the awards.
