Molton Monthly - December 2023 Welcome to the December edition of Molton Monthly. The Christmas celebrations are now in full swing, as communities and familes across North Devon put up their trees and switch on their festive lights. After a largely wet, windy and gloomy month, the colourful decorations bring some much needed cheer, and also hopefully a welcome boost to our hard working local businesses. With so much rain (double the normal average in some parts of Devon), you might be interested to know that the main Roadford Reservoir is now at 62% full (38% this time last year) and Wimbleball 96% (from 29%). We have a packed festive what’s on section, with many events raising funds for good causes. This is reflected in this month’s popular Farm Life column, with farmer and author Roger Hill launching his third ‘Tupper the Tractor’ book supporting the charity Cots for Tots - the neonatal unit at Bristol Hospital covering the whole of the South West. Remember, shop local is for life, not just for Christmas! And Merry Christmas from me... Peter Robinson, Editor & publisher

Nature finds a way by Linda Thompson

Mentioned in the Doomsday Book, 13th century Stoke Pero Church sits high atop Exmoor, more than 1,000 feet above sea level. Until recently there was no electricity on this part of the moor and the church relies on candles and fuel stoves in the winter. “I was amazed how nature has found a way inside the walls around the window, giving a beautiful splash of natural greenery in this tiny church,” said Linda Thompson, who captured this moment of serenity for our photo of the month. “Stoke Pero Church is reputedly the highest church in Somerset. It is high up on the side of the moor and often approached from the steep wooded Combe below, springing into view as you come around a sharp bend in the road climbing up to Stoke Pero Common. The views from the common across Exmoor and to the Bristol Channel are quite outstanding on a clear day.” You can see more of Linda’s photography on her Facebook page: Linda Thompson Photography Whether it’s rural life like this, wildlife, a landscape, nature, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. Star nights success The night skies over Exmoor National Park were celebrated with a series of more than 60 events in late October during the annual Dark Skies Festival. Now in its seventh year, over 2,500 people of all ages were able to learn more about what to see in the night sky, as well as learning about space and light pollution, and the negative effects it can have on wildlife and on humans. Dan James, Rural Enterprise Manager for Exmoor National Park Authority, said, “We have some of the darkest skies in the country and are proud of the designation we received back in 2011 as Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve. Our dark skies are now considered as one of the

national park’s most special qualities that we conserve and celebrate.” “Festival-goers were treated to clear skies during many of this year’s events and the experience of seeing the detail of the moon, or Jupiter and the rings around Saturn through a telescope, are memories that will last a lifetime.” Dark Sky Discovery Hubs were a new addition for 2023, and included the Poltimore Inn at North Molton which has its own observatory, and hosts family stargazing events throughout the year (advert page 52). “There will be plenty of opportunities in the coming winter months to look up and study the sky and we encourage everyone to wrap up warm and go outside to enjoy the darkness,” added Dan. Further information on enjoying Exmoor’s dark skies throughout the year can be found at: exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/stargazing

Local radio star brings Christmas cheer to town pages 18 - 21 BBC Radio Devon breakfast show presenter John Acres had the honour of switching-on South Molton’s Christmas lights this year, as thousands packed-out The Square to celebrate the official start of the festive season in the town. Collections on the night were being made for North Devon Hospice, aiming to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity. “It’s a real pleasure for the town council to host free events like this, that bring our wonderful community together,” said South Molton Mayor, Jacqui Footman. “It’s fantastic to have so many children and families involved, and so great to see our awardwinning pannier market and local businesses have extra opportunities to trade in the approach to Christmas. I hope everyone will enjoy coming out to shop and support them.” Erin West, from the North Devon Hospice fundraising team, paid tribute to the organisers and everyone who attended, “It is humbling to receive your support. We’re proud to be involved in the South Molton Christmas lights switch-on, and your generous donations will provide care to those in this community, as they face the devastating impact of life-limiting illness like cancer.” The lights switch-on, held on the evening of Friday, November 24th, marked the start of the Christmas festivities in South Molton with music from Britain’s Got Talent star Josh Curnow, a children’s lantern parade, late night shopping, street food and the added attraction this year of free ice skating sessions at the lorry park.

Renowned South Molton artist’s work in new exhibition Painter and collagist Wilfred Avery, who was born in South Molton, went largely unrecognised in his lifetime, but now his work is being displayed at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon for the first time. Museum Manager, Alison Mills says, “We’re proud and excited to be exhibiting the work of such a hugely talented artist, including some pieces never before seen by the public.” “It is particularly special that Avery hails from South Molton, and the very familiar North Devon landscape can be seen in his enigmatic work. We would urge visitors to come along and enjoy this beautiful collection while we are fortunate enough to have it.” It is the first exhibition of Wilfred’s work since his death in 2016. ‘Wilfred Avery and the Unpredictable Image’ shows a selection of newly acquired works, alongside loans from private collections and national institutions. Avery focused on striking and stylised landscapes and the male body, but his work was overshadowed by that of his twin brother, the painter and later novelist Samuel Lock. The exhibition will run until January 27th 2024 in Barnstaple. The museum opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and entry is free.

South Molton schoolgirl aims for Hawaii world champs! 10 year-old Piper-Louise Page (pictured right) is on the verge of qualifying for the 2024 Pokémon World Championships, being held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pokémon is a Japanese video and card roleplaying game, based around building a small team of monsters to battle other monsters in a quest to become the best. A pupil at South Molton Community Primary, Piper-Louise is currently ranked 5th in the UK and 11th in Europe, having travelled the country entering tournaments. If she reaches the required points to qualify, which should be by the end of November, her family will start fundraising to help her to get to the world championships in Hawaii next August.

Dad Paul said, “As her parents we are extremely proud of her and think she deserves recognition for her achievements.” They plan to hold a series of fundraising events around South Molton and are asking businesses or individuals who can help with sponsorship or prizes to get in touch; pbannister1969@gmail or 07857 615585

Jobs to do in December 1. Free-standing apple and pear trees should be pruned every winter to keep them productive and control their size. 2. Take hardwood cuttings of Abelia, Deutzia, Buddleia, Cornus, Forsythia and Philadelphus. 3. Prune acers, birches, and vines before Christmas when the sap is falling and they are dormant, bleeding is minimised at this time. 4. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts, and remaining root crops. 5. Reduce watering of houseplants. In winter, houseplants can be left for a week or two without water as long as the room temperature is cool. Another year is nearly over but we still have more plants arriving this month. In the next few weeks, we will take delivery of all the bare root plants; roses, hedging plants, fruit and ornamental trees. These will all be potted up as quickly as possible so that the roots don’t dry out. Thank you all for your custom again this year. We wish you a very Happy Christmas! We’re open every day in December, closing at 1pm on Christmas Eve, and will reopen on Thursday, January 4th. Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - festive thoughts by Roger Hill

I make no apologies for promoting my third children’s adventure book - ‘House on Fire’. It tells the story of Tupper the little old tractor, once again saving the day by rescuing Grandma from her burning home and putting out the fire. Most importantly the books have raised a huge amount of money for our chosen charity Cots for Tots - the neonatal unit at Bristol Hospital covering the whole of the South West. Many thanks to all of you for supporting this great cause. There are many charitable needs highlighted throughout this festive period. Spare a thought for those that are hungry, are struggling to keep warm and who are lonely. Many have to work over the holiday period from the emergency services to community care. As farmers we still have to look after our crops and animals. I recall, one Christmas Eve, having to call the vet for a very difficult calving. Thankfully both mum and twin calves were saved, but our very own James Herriot only just got home in time to see his children open their stockings! Whatever you are doing I wish you a joyous Christmas and thank you very much for reading my ‘Farm Life’ column each month. ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)

Fireworks boost for hospice Thousands of people flocked to the annual South Molton Town Council fireworks display, held in the Central Car Park on November 3rd. Collections on the night raised £1,050 for North Devon Hospice. “We had a great time at the fireworks night, thank you to everyone for their generous donations,” said Erin West from the hospice.

Vintage rally helps charities South Molton Vintage Rally Club donated a massive £18,250, raised through its events in 2023, to charities and local good causes. There were 18 recipients, with the Children’s Hospice South West and the Devon Air Ambulance Trust each receiving £3,500. Exmoor Search and Rescue, Everything Ellie, Ask for Jake and Young Live vs Cancer were among the other causes supported. A special presentation evening was held at the Assembly Rooms in South Molton on October 21st. Most of the money raised came from the club’s annual Vintage Rally, on June 4th and 5th this year, which moved to a new site just outside Rackenford.

Air ambulance shop reopens Having had to close to the public during the Covid restrictions, South Molton’s popular Devon Air Ambulance charity shop (above) is now open for business again. Pete Valance from Devon Air Ambulance, said, “Our South Molton team is excited about being immersed in the heart of the local community and welcoming back those valuable donations that help to keep our crews responding to emergencies.”

Village hall going ‘green’

Community shop fundraising

Chittlehamholt Village Hall is set to receive £34,000 to make a range key environmental improvements. It will be installing solar panels and an air source heat pump, making it more environmentally friendly and economically viable. The toilets are also having a major refit with dedicated access for people with disabilities - they will be available 24/7.

An auction of promises held at The Poltimore Inn in November, raised £7,700 towards a new community shop and hub for the village of North Molton. Almost sixty prizes were donated by local buinesses and individuals. The organisers thanked everyone for their support and say they’re working on a ‘share offer’ programme to raise more money.

The majority of the funding is coming from North Devon Council’s Section 106 scheme, with just over £7,000 coming from the Action with Communities in Rural England Platinum Jubilee Village Hall Fund. Leader at North Devon Council, Councillor Ian Roome, says, “It is a step forward in creating a more inclusive, environmentally conscious, and self-sustaining space for the community to gather, celebrate and connect.”
