Welcome to the August edition of Molton Monthly. We have a new government and a new MP in Ian Roome of the Lib Dems (see report inside). As I said before the general election, I hope this means we can move to a more sustainable future and a society with less division.
The cover story this month is a great success for the people of North Molton, who have worked tirelessly for the last 18 months to fund and open a new shop and community space - good luck for the future. Shopping locally is important on so many levels.
We look at issues with new smart water meters being rolled out, which have caused some residents to get very big bills. The message here is, check your meters and check your water bills. I had mine replaced recently and I’m keeping a close eye on it. This comes as Ofwat announces a proposed price rise of around £13 a year from March 2025 to 2030 to help fund improvements to water services in Devon.
As we head into the school summer holidays we have another packed what’s on section, let’s hope the weather gives us a break!

Making hay, the old fashioned way
by Debbie Tucker
At Higher Biddacott Farm on the edge of Chittlehampton, Jonathan Waterer guides his team of four handsome heavy horses to turn the hay, leaving a dusty haze in the wake of their hooves. This traditional rural scene was captured by Exmoor photographer Debbie Tucker for our photo of the month. “I love watching such majestic horses doing what they are made for,” said Debbie. “It was a privilege for Jonathan and Fiona Waterer to invite me to take photos of them working on the farm.”
“I have always had a passion for photography. Being brought up on Exmoor there was always something you wish you had a camera for!” You can see more of Debbie’s photography and buy prints from her Facebook page Debbie Tucker Photography, and to find out more about Waterers Working Horses go to: heavy-horses.net

Rare butterfly on Exmoor
One of the rarest species of butterfly in the UK, the Heath Fritillary (above), has been spotted at a new location in Exmoor National Park. It was seen by a visiting holidaymaker and verified by the group Butterfly Conservation who work in partnership with the national park.
A long-term project to restore oak coppice has seen them breeding at Hawkcombe Wood for several years, but this sighting was around five miles away at Ashton Cleave.
Traditionally known as the ‘woodmans follower’ because of its habit of occupying recently coppiced areas, the nationally rare Heath Fritillary has also been recorded at Heddon Valley on the North Devon coast.
Senior Woodland Officer for Exmoor National Park Authority Graeme McVittie said, “This bodes well for potential colonisation of other local habitats, historically occupied by this rare and beautiful species of butterfly.”
Molton Monthly is proud to be an Exmoor National Park Partner, promoting sustainability and work to restore nature.

New MP calls for “one united North Devon”
An unseasonal cool rain was being blown by a brisk breeze outside Barnstaple’s Tarka Leisure Centre, as acting Returning Officer Ken Miles announced at 3.50am on Friday, July 5th that Ian Roome of the Liberal Democrats had been elected as the new MP for North Devon.
He ousted the Conservative Selaine Saxby, who had held the seat since 2019, with a majority of 6,744 - a swing of more than 12%. Nigel James of Reform UK came third, with Labour’s Nicky Edwards in fourth, followed by Cas Lay of Green Party with Independent candidate Steve Cotten finishing last (a full list of results is on page 20).
Speaking to Molton Monthly after being elected, Ian Roome, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for North Devon, said, “I am honoured to have been elected to represent North Devon in Parliament. This is a victory for our community and a clear message that we are ready for change. For too long, the Conservative government and our incumbent MP have taken North Devon for granted, failing to address the essential needs of our area.”
“Healthcare services have been stretched to their limits, our beautiful rivers and beaches have suffered from sewage pollution, and the cost of living has skyrocketed under their watch. It’s time for a new approach, centred in localism. I will be North Devon’s champion in Parliament.”
“I am committed to reducing NHS waiting lists, ensuring everyone has access to a GP and dentist,” he continued.
“As one united North Devon, we will build a brighter future for our area, one where every resident can thrive. I look forward to working tirelessly on your behalf and making sure our community’s voice is heard loud and clear in Westminster.”
Ian Roome MP - key issues: tackling the crisis in the NHS; securing fair treatment for local farmers; enhancing environmental protections; reforming water companies; housing in North Devon; underfunding of education and children’s services; poor local transport; implementing policies to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
Continued on page 20
Above, newly elected Lib Dem MP Ian Roome delivers his winner’s speech, as defeated Conservative Selaine Saxby (far right) looks on with the candidates from the other parties
Outgoing MP Selaine Saxby told Molton Monthly, “Being the MP for North Devon has been the privilege of my life. I have worked tirelessly for over four years for the people of North Devon, our communities, businesses, schools and charities.”
“Thank you to those of you that did still put their confidence in me on July 4th. I know for many it was a difficult decision, and not a vote for the party I stood for.”
She also spoke of the “very personal and vile abuse” received on social media, saying she hoped politics would resume “a politer tone”.
“I wish Ian Roome, the new MP for North Devon, the best in representing all our interests. Being an MP is more than a full time job, it is your entire life. You take responsibility and are often blamed for everything and anything, particularly if you sit on the government benches.” Political commentators described the results as an ‘electoral earthquake’ in the South West, as seats switched from Tory to both Liberal Democrat and Labour across large swathes of the region.
North Devon has had a history of flipping between the ‘Liberals’ and Conservatives since the 1950s. The last Lib Dem MP here was Nick Harvey who lost the seat he had held since 1992 to Tory Peter Heanton-Jones at the 2015 General Election.
‘Check your water bills’ warning, after new smart meters see big bill rises
New ‘smart’ water meters being fitted to homes have led to “massive” rises in bills, people in South Molton have reported. Some said they were not given any notice by South West Water (SWW) that their existing meters would be replaced, meaning they were unable to take a reading before it was swapped out.
Maddy Tyler says she was billed £3,020 - reduced to £37.50 a month after she called SWW, while others said they were told there must be a water leak when they complained. Dave Winter (opposite page) told BBC Spotlight, “Our latest bill came to £260 despite normally paying about £40. We’re very careful with water, the trouble is South West Water are not.”
His bill was reduced to £64 after they complained. Mr Winter said they weren’t told about the meter change, so didn’t have a chance to take a final reading.
The water company says the new meters (right) are part of their ‘Green Recovery Programme’ to manage water use more efficiently. It says information is being sent to residents, and that final meter readings would be taken during the installation, with the new one starting at zero.
Mr Winter urged other residents to check their meters and their bills, especially if they pay by direct debit. He featured on BBC Spotlight on July 8th in a bid to raise awareness of the issue.
If you think you’ve been incorrectly billed, you can contact South West Water on 0344 346 2020 on message them on WhatsApp.

It was all smiles, as the new North Molton Community Shop opened its doors to customers for the first time on Wednesday, July 10th. It followed 18 months of hard work and fundraising by the volunteers behind the project.
“We are very grateful to all of the donors, shareholders and businesses that have supported us throughout the process of creating our village shop and community space,” said David Heath, secretary of the North Molton Community Shop Ltd. Located at The Old School House near the church, the shop will be open 8am-6pm
Monday to Saturday and 9am-12pm on Sundays, subject to availability of volunteers. More volunteers are needed - if you can help go to their website: northmoltonshop.com or tel: 01769 740093.
Walking to help the vulnerable
North Molton fundraiser Frances Clemson raised £362 by walking 70 kilometres to historic North Devon churches as part of Christian Aid Week, supporting vulnerable people worldwide.

Plan for new ‘otter hospital’
The UK Wild Otter Trust, based just outside Kings Nympton, has launched an appeal to raise funds to build a new ‘otter hospital’.
Founder Dave Webb said, “We currently have six indoor cub rooms, which unfortunately isn’t enough for the numbers of young otters we’re treating.”
“Having this additional space is vital to give rescued cubs the best chance of rehabilitation and release back into the wild.”
They’re appealing for help raising the funds needed to build the new facility, after a local company offered the materials at a discounted rate of £2,000.

Jobs to do in August
1. Most rambling Roses flower just once in summer and as they flower on the old wood they should be pruned after flowering. Thin out one in three of the old stems at the base and tie in new replacement shoots.
2. Apply nematodes for control of vine weevil larvae later this month or early next. Target plants prone to attack, such as Heuchera, Sedum and Primula, especially in containers.
3. Give hardy Geraniums a light trim to encourage another flush of flowers.
4. Lift spring sown onions and shallots once the foliage yellows and topples over. Dry bulbs in a single layer in full sun outdoors, or in a greenhouse or well-ventilated shed.
5. Cut established perennial wildflower meadow. Leaves clippings on the ground for a few days to encourage self-seeding.
In spite of August definitely being a summer month, this is when we begin stocking autumn and winter plants. Winter flowering Pansies, Violas and Cyclamen will all be available later in the month. With spring flowering bulbs available at the end of the month or beginning of September.
Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - herbal grass sowing
by Roger Hill
We drilled a herbal ley (grass) for the first time recently. I say we, but it was done by a contractor with far superior machinery to our ‘dinky toys’.
How things have changed in my lifetime. Every new crop was preceded by ploughing the land, working up a fine soil structure and broadcast on top with a spreader (actually my dad used a hand fiddle walking miles in a day). Then it would be harrowed in and rolled to keep the moisture in the earth. Today it is usually one pass and the job is done efficiently and quickly.
What is a herbal ley you may ask. It consists of an array of deep rooted species including perennial ryegrass, meadow fescue, timothy, white clover, chicory, yarrow, plantain and sheep’s burnet.
Ours is specifically for sheep and it will be interesting to see if they like it. I’m quite confident. We are at that stage of the year when plans are put into operation to feed the livestock through the winter. Already silage, hay and corn has been harvested and put into storage.
Soon we shall be planning ahead for next year’s crop planting. Farming doesn’t stop! ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com)

Men’s Shed South Molton
by Wally Stephens
Many of us like to watch the Repair Shop on TV and marvel at the items that are repaired. Here at the Men’s Shed we also can repair items that have been damaged or broken. We may not have the varied skills of the Repair Shop and maybe not as much knowledge, but we do our best with amazing results!
We mainly work in wood at the moment, but with new members joining skills are broadening. We are always after donations of tools, so if you have old unwanted, unloved tools, working or non working, then please give us a thought - we can repair them to sell, which will help us to pay our rent etc.
On Saturday, August 10th (10am to 2pm) we’re holding a surplus tool sale at the Men’s Shed, Cemetery Workshop, Mill Street, South Molton EX36 4AR. There will be garden and DIY tools, all will have been cleaned, tested, repaired, refurbished and will be in full working order.
We also make things like bird boxes, dormouse boxes, hedgehog houses and feeders, or maybe there is something that you would like us to make for you. Call in or phonel Wally: 07857 605816
South Molton garden is ‘on song’
by Rebecca Blackman
We’ve kept the garden ticking along nicely over the past few weeks with most vegetables doing well so far. Work on the ‘mud kitchen’ is still ongoing. We’re clearing and weeding the space and making progress, slowly but surely.
Our first ‘Songs From the Shed’ music session took place on July 6th (above right). Due to the stormy weather, the garden was too soggy to host a gathering! Instead we enjoyed ‘Songs NOT From the Shed’ at the YMCA, with live music from Mike Rigby, Mick Osborne, Llongstone Moon and Arnwyn. Thanks to our performers, organisers and the audience.
If you’d like to join us, visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon at 2pm (weather permitting). See our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk
Sad to be closing down
The North Devon Animal Ambulance service is set to close down on August 31st. Founder Diana Lewis (pictured right) said the “difficult decision” had been made partly because of trustees retiring, but also because of rising costs making it hard for them to continue to afford to keep running.
The Cobbaton Combat Collection at Chittlehampton has also announced it will be closing to the public from the end of September. The team said they will continue to host special events, open days, military vehicle restoration and militaria fairs, stating, “This has been a monumental decision and we will really miss the familiar faces of our many visitors.”
Hoping for good weather
The 2024 North Devon Show is nearly upon us, with the event taking place at its usual location at Barton Farm, Umberleigh on Wednesday, August 7th (advert page 12).
Celebrating the region’s rural life with new family friendly attractions this year, show secretary Theresa Soanes says they hope “the weather will be back to normal” after a freak storm caused problems last year.
Santas in summer!
You might have thought your eyes were deceiving you if you saw Father Christmas riding by on a motorcycle in summer! But on Sunday, June 30th the ‘Santa’s on a Bike’ group stopped off South Molton’s Quince Honey Farm - they were raising funds for Children’s Hospice South West.
Fete move
Chittlehampton’s annual fete and dog show on Saturday, August 10th (advert page 16) will be held at the cricket ground due to ongoing renovation work at the village hall.
Vintage thank you
The chairman and committee would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who took part in the 2024 South Molton Vintage Rally. “There had been much planning and hard work getting ready for the event. We were very lucky and were blessed with warm June sunshine all weekend,” said Linda Regan. “A special thank you to all of the exhibitors, the stall holders and our many visitors.”
