Molton Monthly - April 2024 Welcome to the April edition of Molton Monthly. At the time of writing, spring is doing its best to burst through the gloom and damp of the last few months. Our gardening correspondent Jenny recorded a whopping 8.5 inches of rain at her Rose Ash nursery in February!

Along with the drought of 2022-2023, these are records we could do without, but are a sign of our ever changing climate.

On the cover this month, we join South Molton’s SMART Swim Centre team in celebrating their first anniversary.

It’s a testament to their hard work and professionalism that they are making the pool a success again. Plus, they are launching a new community initiative to open up free swim sessions for those in need. Well done!

We have answers this month to some of the questions I asked the Link Road contractors back in January. Only time will tell if they meet their new summer 2024 deadline.

With the school Easter holidays there’s a packed what’s on section, and don’t forget the clocks go forward an hour on March 31st!

A drover’s tale

Exmoor has beauty in many forms, changing with the seasons and the weather. For our photo of the month, Chris Metcalfe captured this dramatic view as part of a short video he created called ‘Which way now’ for local farmer John Richards (@jr_richards_yarner).

“John invited me to make a film of his beautiful Exmoor Horn sheep coming home over the heights of Exmoor for the winter,” Chris told Molton Monthly. “I was privileged to capture this iconic scene. It shows just how special Exmoor Horns are and displays the best of Exmoor.”

Rare lichen is sign of good air quality on Exmoor

A rare organism that is thriving on Exmoor is a positive sign for nature, according to wildlife experts. The Beard Lichen (above) is highly sensitive to air quality and therefore will only grow in areas with low pollution levels, staff at Exmoor National Park say.

The delicate species, often found anchored onto the bark of tree trunks and branches, is formed from a mix of fungi and algae.

Exmoor National Park ranger Charlotte Wray said, “Lichens are a wonderful example of cooperation in nature, as they bring together a plant species with a fungi species and have existed for millions of years.”

“On Exmoor we have many lichen-rich habitats such as the woodland through the Barle Valley, the coastal woods that stretch from Porlock to Countisbury and the temperate rainforest at Horner Wood which supports many vital, rare lichens.”

A Woodland Trust spokesperson added, “It’s effective against bacteria including tuberculosis and was traditionally used to treat wounds and things like gangrene.”

Swimming to success!

New community project marks pool anniversary South Molton’s SMART Swim Centre team are celebrating their first anniversary of saving the town’s previously troubled pool, by launching a new initiative aimed at getting more local people in the swim.

Pool owner Lisa Bousted has joined forces with Natalie Pinto and Tracey Hommell to found the SMART Action Project CIC (SAP), to provide opportunities for people under the age of 25 not only to learn to swim, but also training, work experience and social events alongside other groups in the town, including the YMCA and Skate Molton.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community,” said Natalie Pinto, chair of SAP. “We understand that not every household

has the opportunity to attend regular activities at the centre, so we wanted to create something with local people’s wellbeing at its heart. SAP will provide more opportunities for swimming and lessons, but also extend our offer of school holiday activities, work experience and employability options through training.”

The SMART team, led by Lisa Bousted, Darren Horwood and Charlotte Smart, bought the pool in 2023 when the previous operators 1610 Leisure Trust were forced to close it, citing spiralling costs and rising debts; 1610 had taken over running the facility from the original trustees in 2019.

“As a family we have used South Molton pool many a times. We were saddened for the community that they had lost their pool again,” Lisa Bousted told Molton Monthly.

“With our experience and expertise, we felt as a family we had the drive, passion and love of water to bring South Molton’s pool back to the community and surrounding areas,” continued Lisa, who is herself a highly qualified International STA (Swimming Teachers Assoc) swim tutor.

“The best thing has been meeting local people and providing a safe space for families, friends and individuals to exercise, relax and feel part of a growing community. We’ve also loved seeing our team of 37, most of whom had never been in the industry before, grow and develop as the business has grown. They are the people that are making SMART a success.”

Under SMART’s ownership the pool (pictured below) has been further modernised and upgraded, receiving many five star reviews for the way it’s been run over the last 12 months.

Nationally, swimming pools have been struggling due to rising energy costs and cuts to local authority budgets. Swim England is calling for urgent government support for the sector.

South Molton’s pool is now a self-funded business, and the owners echo the words of Terry Woods, who helped secure grants for the first heated indoor pool back in the 1990s, “The community has their pool, now you’ve got to use it!”.

Link Road contractors respond to criticism Drivers are being warned to watch out for frequent changes in the layout of the Borners Bridge junction between North Molton and South Molton, while contractors work towards finishing the final design (pictured right).

“You will see a lot of changes here over the next two months as we complete the new alignment,” said the project manager for Griffiths. “We would advise motorists to exercise caution as road layouts will change frequently due to the complex nature of the roadworks.”

Molton Monthly revealed earlier this year that the £67 million North Devon Link Road upgrade is now facing a delay of at least six months until “summer 2024”. Large parts of the roadworks had already been scaled back to try to keep within budget due to spiralling construction costs.

Many motorists and locals not only criticised the delays and disruption, but also the perceived lack of quality of the new road surfaces. “As we progress towards the summer we will be focusing on giving all sections of the project its final surfacing. This will address the current poor condition and provide the road with a new lifespan,” the spokesman continued.

In the coming weeks, Borners Bridge roundabout, West Buckland bridge and Landkey footbridge are all set to move nearer completion, alongside final resurfacing work.

The north spur road to West Buckland will be closed during the (early) April school holidays to allow work on the new bridge and its walls, and the junction access roads.

Landkey footbridge installation is planned to start in mid May and will take three weeks to complete. There will be a new road layout and traffic switch from Swimbridge to West Buckland, to enable ‘deep drainage’ works to take place on the north verge.

Griffiths say that while the traffic lights have been removed, there will be further nighttime closures on the A361 right through to the end of the project in summer 2024 to keep work on track. “A big thank you to the local communities for their enduring patience and support,” they added.

‘Dinosaur’ trees planted in North Devon They were alive 200 million years ago, when dinosaurs were roaming the earth. Now, in a major new global conservation project, six endangered Wollomia pine saplings from Australia have been planted at RHS Rosemoor.

Scientists say there are now fewer than 100 Wollomia trees growing in the wild, so the team at the botanic gardens near Great Torrington in North Devon are helping to save them from extinction. The pines narrowly escaped being wiped out completely by wildfires in 2019-2020, which burnt about 25 million acres of land in eastern Australia.

“The species is now classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature,” said Roz Mitchell from RHS Rosemoor. “The pines we have planted are part of the first global ‘metacollection’ designed to safeguard the species from extinction.”

For the first time, collections of saplings are being made available to botanic gardens across the world. Locations have been chosen with a suitable climate, best suited for the trees to survive the climate changes ahead as part of global efforts to preserve threatened plants.

The tree saplings went through strict quarantine after being imported from Australia, and have now been planted on a woodland bank on the northern border of RHS Rosemoor.

Police appeal after local crime spree Detectives are urging residents to check doorbell and CCTV footage, and take extra security precautions, after another spate of burglaries and thefts in Devon including at Chulmleigh, Rackenford and South Molton.

Officers now believe five recent break-ins may be linked to 15 burglary reports before Christmas. The latest offences took place between February 19th and March 11th.

Detective Inspector Guy Biggar said, “Sadly we’ve seen a and later found abandoned continuation in this series of crimes, and I would urge the public to be extra vigilant securing both houses and vehicles. If you have seen any suspicious behaviour or have been a victim of an offence and not yet reported it, please get in touch with us (crime number 50240040188).”

Several properties were broken into including one at South Molton Street in Chulmleigh, Fulford Drive in Cullompton, plus Rackenford, Thorverton, Exeter and Sidmouth. Officers say intruders damaged door locks, reached through a cat flap or got in via insecure doors and windows.

Once inside they stole car keys, bank cards and the cars themselves. Of the eight cars taken in the five most recent burglaries, police say four have since been recovered.

“We would ask residents to ensure that their homes are secure by keeping their doors locked at night and when they leave their property,” added Det Insp Biggar.

South Molton business Baker George had their distinctive green van stolen between 10pm on March 11th and 5am on March 12th. It was found later in the day damaged and stuck in a muddy field, following a social media appeal. Thieves also stole a quad bike, motorcycle and tools from a rural barn at Rackenford a few days before.

In late February, officers from the South Molton Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out an operation with the Roads Policing Unit on the A361 near South Molton. It followed a run of high value caravan thefts, vehicle offences and burglaries. Sergeant Rob Brown said, “We want to provide reassurance to those that live in our towns and villages that we are listening to their concerns and taking action.”

Jobs to do in April 1. Mulch rose and shrub beds with 2-3in of organic matter. This will retain moisture during dry spells, reduce weed build-up and over time improve soil structure.

2. Tie in climbing and rambling roses as near to horizontal as possible. This will restrict sap flow, causing more side-shoots to grow along the stem, and so produce more flowers.

3. Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. Plant out autumn-sown sweet peas that have been raised in pots.

4. Plant out Broad Beans. Seeds which can be sown undercover include celeriac, courgettes, squashes, pumpkins, marrows and leeks.

5. Consider planting shrubs or trees which provide food for birds such as holly, hawthorn, rowan and cotoneaster.

During April we continue potting up thousands of hanging basket and bedding plants every week. Then, when we reach the middle of the month, we turn our attention to making hanging baskets.

Farm Life - spring forward

After such a seemingly long and wet winter with incessantly miserable weather, April comes like a breath of fresh air. Helped along with the spring flowers, there is positivity for the exciting days ahead.

This time of year, as the grass growth begins to accelerate, it is an ideal opportunity to turn out cattle from their winter housing. It is always a pleasure to watch them skipping around the fields of North Devon and Exmoor.

Spring sowing of crops is the other main job, but has to be timed to perfection. Too early, when the soil is still cold and wet, can lead to poor germination and even soil compaction.

Leave drilling too late, especially with grass re-seeding, and there is the risk of hitting dry, hot weather which reduces yield. We farmers are never completely satisfied but with a combination of knowledge, skill and a degree of luck we hope to produce high yielding and quality crops to feed the nation.

Another facet we need is patience, especially with our young vineyard. First planted in 2019, we finally have wine to sell from our 2022 grape harvest. Six Nations rugby for Emma Red Roses head coach John Mitchell has named a 35-player squad for the 2024 Guinness Women’s Six Nations rugby championship. It includes Emma Sing from South Molton, who will be hoping to add to her six senior England caps.

“The Red Roses have excelled in this tournament for a long time. There is a hunger to stay the best, but we must earn the right to win Test matches,” said John Mitchell.

“The girls have brought a great attitude and fantastic energy to training. There’s fierce competition for places.”

The Six Nations tournament takes place between March 23rd to April 27th, with England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy competing for the prestigious title.

All matches will be shown live on BBC TV.

Community garden news

We’ve had quite an uplifting month at South Molton Community Garden. Following a positive and productive AGM back in February, we are excited to welcome the arrival of some red mason bees and a brand new website!

The bees are in tiny little cocoons and not ready to hatch yet. They are non aggressive bees with no honey, and are superb pollinators. One of our members has been busy making paper tubes for the bees to nest in and we’re building a little bee hotel to house the tubes.

This will be situated in a quiet, south facing area of the garden and we’ll wait for them to emerge over spring. In the meantime, we need to ensure plenty of pollinator-friendly planting to keep the bees happy. A very exciting addition to our lovely garden.

Community News pages 50-53 Fined for unlicensed dog breeding An Exmoor equestrian centre owner has been handed a £10,000 fine for breeding dogs without a license. Tristan Gosling, of Whitemoor Equestrian Centre, East Anstey, was found guilty at a hearing on March 1st at Barnstaple Magistrates Court. He was said to be responsible for breeding dogs in September last year without the required license and selling pets without proper authorisation, contrary to animal welfare laws.

Chair of the Licensing Committee at North Devon Council, Cllr Louisa York said, “Licensing allows us to undertake checks on a business to ensure all welfare standards are being met, and animals are leading healthy, happy, and safe lives. I’m pleased we got this outcome, which hopefully sends the message to other people that we take animal welfare extremely seriously.”

MP tackled over lack of dentists Concerned residents are lobbying North Devon MP Selaine Saxby over the lack of NHS dentist provision, after she stated that South Molton could see an ‘NHS dental van’ service visiting.

John Northfield of Bee Meadows said, “In two years we have not been able to obtain any NHS dental services within a thirty mile radius of South Molton. With hundreds of new homes being built in the town it’s nothing short of a total disgrace.” He is urging others to write to their MP.

Bus service meeting called A campaign is underway to improve bus links between South Molton, Chittlehampton, Atherington, Torrington and Umberleigh railway station.

Residents are being urged to attend a public meeting at the Plough Arts Centre in Torrington at 7pm on Wednesday, April 10th.

“A survey in Chittlehampton had a good return, showing that if such a service were provided it would be welcomed and used,” said Gerrard Sables of Northern Devon Right to Travel. “We only need a little more interest and we can win a service which could benefit five rural Devon communities.”

Carnival could return

Gearing up for vintage rally

A group has been set up to try to bring back South Molton Carnival in 2024. They are proposing a date of Saturday, October 12th and are now setting about gauging public opinion. The Town Council and Rotary Club are supporting the initiative. Art presentation Volunteers from One South Molton presented a banner and a skep (ancient beehive) to the town council. They were made at the South Molton Gets Together community arts day in January, which was sponsored by South Molton Rotary Club and the Municipal Charities, and led by Annabel Hill and Kacper Zrąbkowski. The skep will go on display at Quince Honey Farm (photo above by Karolina Andreasova).

Minister’s golden jubilee

The Right Reverend Michael Clothier (pictured above), Bishop of Bishops Tawton, will celebrate 50 years of ministry in the church at a special service.

It will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 6th at the Methodist Church in South Molton.

The homily will be given by Rev Dr Leonard Hollands, and all are welcome to attend.
