Molton Monthly - May 2021 Welcome to the May edition of Molton Monthly. With the Government’s ‘roadmap out of lockdown’ still on target, and Coronavirus cases in North Devon close to zero, we’re finally seeing the majority of businesses reopening. The mood locally seems to match the stunning spring weather we’ve been having so far.

Let’s stay vigilant so we don’t see a return to lockdown, and the difficult and damaging ‘stop - start’ to our lives and the economy.

Our cover photo by Karolina Andreasova shows a special tree planting ceremony in tribute to Prince Philip, who died on April 9th at the ripe old age of 99 (pages 22-23).

This month we have some amazing children featured. Little Esmé has spent most of her 22 months fighting for her life - but she’s finally home with her family (pages 18-19).

Plus young Max Woosey has raised £600,000 during lockdown for North Devon Hospice by camping in a tent for a year (pages 42-43).

Coronavirus vaccinations and testing remain on target here in North Devon, and the next lifting of restrictions is due on May 17th.

For our May photo of the month, North Devon photographer Justin Swain captured this dramatic moment, as a female buzzard swoops down at very close quarters (left)!

“I’d been out on Exmoor for a sunrise walk when I spotted this buzzard perched in a tree close by,” Justin told Molton Monthly.

“Fortunately, she waited patiently for me to switch camera lenses and posed for a few portrait shots before taking flight!”

Justin goes by the name ‘Wanderjust’ thanks to a love of travel and describes himself as a keen amateur photographer and licensed commercial drone pilot.

Covid cancels North Devon Show for second year

The organisers of the annual North Devon Show at Umberleigh say they’re “sad and devastated” that they’ve had to cancel the popular event for the second summer in a row due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Show secretary Theresa Soanes said, “Although recent news about Covid-19 is much more positive, there remains a lot of uncertainties around larger events, and with clear guidelines not being available until nearer show day it makes planning near impossible for us.”

“The safety and welfare of everyone involved with the North Devon Show is our main priority, particularly as our show is run mainly by volunteers, and with the uncertainties surrounding Covid-19 restrictions, this is the safest decision we could make.”

The North Devon Show Society would like to thank everyone who has supported them, and said they want to reassure people that their efforts will now turn to planning and holding a “fabulous show” on Wednesday August 3rd 2022.

Local elections - May 6th 2021

On Thursday May 6th 2021, residents in North Devon and Torridge will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at the Devon County Council and Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner elections. For those who choose to vote in person, safety measures will be implemented to make polling stations Covid Secure places to cast your vote.

Voters are encouraged to keep themselves and others safe by:

• wearing a face covering

• bringing their own pen or pencil

• cleaning their hands regularly

• keeping a safe distance Voters should not attend the polling station if they have symptoms of Covid-19, or if they have been asked to self-isolate. There will be measures in place to apply for an emergency proxy vote if required due to health circumstances.

Little Esmé rings the bell to return home It’s been a fight made harder by the restrictions imposed by the Covid pandemic, but little Esmé is finally home with her family in South Molton after ‘ringing the bell’ at Bristol Children’s Hospital (pictured right).

“We have been shown so much love and support, not only by the local community but also by complete strangers. We’ve been totally blown away with everyone’s kindness and generosity, we honestly cannot thank them all enough for what they’ve done for our family,” mum Claire Culshaw told Molton Monthly.

“Esmé has a very long and uncertain journey ahead of her, but for now we are just thankful to have her home where we are enjoying every minute we can with her.”

Little Esmé hasn’t had the best start in life, she was born with congenital heart disease, chronic lung disease, transient leukaemia and Down’s syndrome. She was on oxygen 24 hours a day for the first 8 months, and was in complete heart failure so she needed to have major open heart surgery at just 5 months old. This has led her to have a pacemaker fitted and can only be fed by a nasal tube. Currently just 22 months old she celebrates her 2nd birthday on June 13th.

After all that, last September Esmé was diagnosed with AML, an aggressive form of childhood leukaemia that required 6 months of intense chemotherapy, but due to Covid only one parent at a time could be at the hospital.

“Being apart for so long really broke our hearts and made this horrendous journey from North Devon to Bristol even more difficult,” added Claire.

Esmé finally rang the ‘end of treatment bell’ on March 10th, 186 days after her diagnosis.

Claire and partner James Foden say they’re overjoyed to have her home with their four other children - and paid tribute to the dedicated hospital staff for their “fantastic care” throughout Esmé’s treatments.

Cherry tree among tributes paid to Prince Philip A flowering cherry tree planted in tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh will burst into blossom every spring on the anniversary of his death. Shortly before Prince Philip’s funeral, a small group gathered under beautiful blue skies to perform the planting ceremony at South Molton’s garden of rest in the town’s cemetery (pictured right).

“It seemed significant to have a blossoming tree in memory of the Duke of Edinburgh, as we’re busy planting flowers, trees and shrubs around the town for our entry into South West in Bloom,” said Elaine Symons, a South Molton in Bloom volunteer who came up with the idea.

Among those taking part in the special planting was David Squires, who achieved Bronze, Sliver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards as a youngster, and had the privilege of meeting Prince Philip when he received his ‘Gold’ at Buckingham Palace. David went on to lead the Army Cadet Force, helping other young people achieve their own Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

HRH the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was laid to rest in St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle on April 17th. He died just two months short of his 100th birthday.

He had a long association with Devon, and visited North Devon several times over the last 70 years of royal duty, including the military base at Chivenor, Barnstaple and Lynmouth.

“We give thanks for a wonderful life, may he rest in peace,” said the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon. “He was a great man who contributed hugely to our country and our county; a constant and loyal support to Her Majesty and he did all this while demonstrating a genuine interest in people and with a wonderful sense of humour which was so often on display.”

Devon & Cornwall most searched property locations With the easing of the lockdown regulations and the extension of the Stamp Duty holiday for properties up to £250,000 until the end of September, the demand for homes in North Devon has remained very strong in all price ranges.

The UK’s largest property search site Rightmove has confirmed that Devon is now the second most searched location at the moment, with Cornwall in the top spot.

Land Registry data has also shown that prices in North Devon have risen 4% in the last 12 months.

Values in the property market are understandably driven upwards by strong demand and consequently whatever the

reason is for selling, this is the perfect time to realise the best price for your property. These periods of high demand are sometimes short lived, so it would sensible to get your property on the market as soon as possible.

South Molton begins to bloom!

Volunteers are digging for victory all around South Molton as the town’s entry into the 2021 South West in Bloom competition begins to grow in the spring sunshine.

And it’s not just flowers and shrubs, Bridget Smith and Elaine Symons (pictured right) have brought floral colour to the disused Chanters Bakery shop on Barnstaple Street.

Townsfolk are being urged to join in, whether it’s putting art in your window, having a fresh hanging basket or entering the front garden competition.

There’s also a new litter picking group, the South Molton Wombles, organised by Will Locke, helping to keep the town tidy. Plus there’s Stephen Huxtable who cuts the grass, empties the bins and much more!

Molton Monthly has donated some plants supplied by Ash Moor Nursery that will be planted around Livarot Walk, with a plaque very kindly made by the local Men’s Shed volunteers.

Jobs to do in May 1. Continue to insert plant supports for herbaceous perennials, especially those with tall, brittle stems or large, heavy flowers, taking care not to damage young growth.

2. To prevent Aubretia becoming bare and leggy, give plants a hard prune after flowering, cutting back to near ground level.

3. Lift and divide overcrowded daffodil clumps. Gently separate offsets from parent bulbs and replant immediately.

4. Harvest rhubarb from established crowns as stalks reach 23-30cm (9-12in). Pull (do not cut) stalks, taking no more than half at one time.

5. Top up birdfeeders to help garden birds feed their young. Avoid food such as whole peanuts, large items may choke chicks.

This is a great month in the gardening year, now is finally the right time to start planting out summer bedding, and to fill containers and hanging baskets. If you have a greenhouse you can plant your baskets from the beginning of the month, then keep them inside for three or four weeks to really get established before you hang them outside when all risk of frost has passed.

There are so many fabulous plants to choose from, there is something to suit all tastes and colour schemes.

Farm Life - my favourite month

May is definitely my favourite month. Winter is behind us and we have those long summer days to look forward to. In the fields the lambs are skipping and playing, and the cattle are munching the deliciously fresh green shoots. Nature is bursting at this time of year and with an abundance of grass the first harvests of silage take place.

My favourite time in the calendar year is epitomised by my favourite flower - the bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) carpeting our woodland walk. Hopefully too from May 17th we shall be able to welcome back our guests for the first time in fifteen months to share our beautiful Devon countryside.

Of course May also brings forth the sound of leather on willow and I love watching village cricket on a warm summer’s evening. My dream would be to still be out on the field of play but my creaking bones tell me to enjoy the game from the boundary’s edge!

Max power! 11 year old raises £600,000 for North Devon Hospice “Lockdown has thrown up some truly inspiring stories, and I think that Max’s efforts are up there with the very best. His is certainly the Captain Tom of his generation!” said Stephen Roberts, Chief Executive at North Devon Hospice.

He’s paying tribute schoolboy Max Woosey, who has been sleeping out in a tent in his back garden here in North Devon every night since March 28th... last year! He’s braved gales, freezing temperatures and torrential rain. The 11 year old thought he might raise £100, but so far he’s raised a whopping £600,000 including Gift Aid for the local charity.

Max started fundraising because the hospice had looked after family friend Rick Abbott who passed away from cancer in February 2020. Rick was a keen adventurer, camper and outdoor sports enthusiast. Shortly before dying he brought his tent over to Max, then aged 10, telling him ‘promise me you’ll have your own adventures in it’.

“I’ve raised over half-a-million pounds now - it’s absolutely mad,” said Max. He then organised the ‘Big Camp Out’ inviting children around the world to join him on his first anniversary in the tent. His father, Royal Marine Mark Woosey said, “Max has been on an amazing journey. It has brought out both his empathy for others and his steely determination. What was really great about Max’s Big Camp Out is that it gave children a chance to do something really positive, when all they have heard for months on end is you can’t do this, and you can’t do that.”

As lockdown restrictions were lifted young Max was given the honour of re-opening the historic Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway on April 12th. He cut the ribbon to open up the popular attraction (below).

Rapid Covid tests available With cases of Coronavirus staying in single fingers in North Devon in the last few weeks, adults are being urged to take new tests.

Every adult in Devon is being encouraged to take a rapid lateral flow test for Covid-19 twice a week.

They can do so in a variety of ways including through testing centres, workplaces, pharmacies or home delivery.

Lockdown brings new look

If we can take just one thing forward from the last 12 months, it’s that our interiors and spaces we spend most of our time in have taken on a whole new meaning as they function as homes, sanctuaries, and of course offices and workplaces.

This new way of living has put the quality of our home spaces to the top of our list as it can affect every segment of our lives. With the country slowly emerging from lockdown we are all looking for things to make us feel good.

The sunshine and outdoors plays a huge part in this, but we must find new ways to capture the colour and joy from outside and bring it into our homes.

At Finishing Touches, this lockdown has enabled us to upgrade to a new shop location within the George Arcade that brings more light and vibrance to the fabric within.

Community News pages 50-55 Witness appeals Police investigating reports of a serious assault in South Molton on Saturday April 3rd, are asking witnesses to come forward.

A 21-year-old local man received hospital treatment for a broken jaw and fractured skull as a result of the incident.

The reported assault took place around 9.30pm on April 3rd, in an alley between the Spar shop and South Molton Museum (pictured right).

A 19-year-old man from South Molton was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent and an 18-year-old man, also from South Molton, was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm. Both were released on police bail, pending further enquiries, and are due to answer bail on May 10th.

Shooting investigation Police enquiries are continuing after three people were shot with an air rifle in Broad Street, South Molton shortly before 8.30am on March 23rd. A police spokesperson said: “A woman was shot to the chin, which broke the skin. Two others weren’t injured.”

Campaign to save village pub reaches £100,000 Villagers in Chawleigh trying to save their local pub have raised almost half the £225,000 total needed in just six weeks.

A share scheme which would see the Chawleigh Community Trust taking over the previously popular pub, which closed in November 2019, has now been extended and they’re looking into possible match funding through a new Government scheme.

“Public houses have been the social heart of British communities for hundreds of years, so come on everyone and invest now to make sure The Earl goes on for hundreds more years!” said volunteer David Flavin.

“Invest from £100 to £30,000, the choice is

yours, and remember everyone has an equal vote, you will own part of the bricks and mortar and you may receive interest on your investment in the future.”

They’re appealing for people across Devon to support the community takeover scheme.

Village gets new defibrillator The community of Heasley Mill, near North Molton is celebrating after raising enough money to kit out their disused public phone box with a lifesaving defibrillator.

They’re now setting about repainting the box (pictured right) and registering the equipment so that it’s ready to use in an emergency.

They held a country hamper raffle which raised £1300, and the other £1000 came from donations and a small grant.

The defibrillators are supplied and fitted by the Community HeartBeat Trust. They increase the chance of survival should someone go into cardiac arrest. If your community would like one visit: communityheartbeat.org.uk

RGB donates £8,000 to air ambulance services RGB Building Supplies say they’re delighted to have raised a fantastic £8,400 for Devon Air Ambulance and Cornwall Air Ambulance trusts over the last 12 months.

“We are so grateful to everyone at RGB for their continued fundraising efforts throughout the past year. Despite the challenges they faced during the pandemic, they have remained committed supporters of Devon Air Ambulance and have raised an amazing amount of money,” said Tracy Owen from Devon Air Ambulance.

“We would also like to thank those people who either purchased bulk bags from RGB or one of the ‘Love where you live’ charity calendars. Their contribution has made a

huge difference to the fundraising total and the service we provide.”

Hike for hospice this May Children’s Hospice South West is asking people to take on an ‘Incredible Hike’ and raise vital funds for the charity.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2021, the charity has lined up 30 inspiring walking routes across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset for people to choose from - or you can simply pick one of your own.

Jayne Jarret from the charity said, “We want people to hike as they like and raise a bit of money to ensure local children and families continue to receive the vital hospice care they need.”

“May is National Walking Month and whether it’s a scenic stroll or an epic hike, getting outside for some fresh air is more important

for our mental wellbeing than ever.”

It’s free to register to take part in The Incredible Hike and if you can raise more than £30 in sponsorship you’ll get a commemorative 30th anniversary medal.

Another gold for Honey Farm Quince Honey Farm have taken home Gold in the Tourism Innovation Award at this year’s South West Tourism Awards.

The awards celebrate tourism businesses across the whole South West region. This year it featured 75 finalists from more than 400 entries from Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. The winners were announced in an online ceremony on April 22nd.

This latest win comes just a few weeks after they achieved Gold in the Tourism Innovation Award and Bronze in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Devon Tourism Awards.

Walking club back after lockdown

As the restrictions of the last year begin to ease, Roger Warren of Fitness 4 Living ND will be offering a number of classes for those wanting to take up or return to exercise.

At the moment all classes take place outdoors, but the plan is to move indoors from May 17th if the government’s ‘roadmap’ stays on schedule.

Current sessions on offer are:

those who may be put off by the thought of star jumps and burpees!

Tuesday Health Walk - meet outside South Molton Pannier Market for a 9am start. Walks usually last about an hour and are between 2 and 3 miles in length.

South Molton Fitclub - every Tuesday at 6:30pm at South Molton Methodist Hall at the top of Duke Street.

Thursday Circuits - every Thursday at 6:30pm at South Molton Methodist Hall at the top of Duke Street.

The popular Seated Exercise Class will resume when classes are allowed indoors.

This usually takes place at 11am on Wednesdays.
