Molton Monthly - March 2021 Welcome to the March edition of Molton Monthly - as tens of thousands more local people have their Covid-19 vaccinations (see pages 14-16), hopefully we can look forward to brighter days ahead. Plus it’s the start of British Summer Time, with the clocks going forward an hour on March 28th, meaning longer daylight hours and hopefully better weather.

The Government has announced that all schools should reopen from March 8th as the first step towards easing the current lockdown restrictions; plus allowing us to meet one other person outdoors for a ‘picnic’ from that date. From March 29th, coinciding with the start of the school holidays, the ‘rule of six’ is set to return to allow small outside gatherings in time for Easter - and outdoor sports should also be able to resume then.

Let’s hope that this time the Covid-19 infection rate continues to fall.

I’m delighted to say that Molton Monthly is supporting the new South Molton in Bloom initiative, which will bring some much needed brightness and colour to our lives this year.

To kick things off, this month’s cover photo showing crocuses bursting with beauty in the grounds of St Mary Magdalene Church, was captured by local photographer and artist Karolina Andreasova. You can read more about how to get involved on pages 22-23.

We’re now expanding our delivery area, so welcome to our new readers in Chawleigh!

A winter chill has gripped North Devon and Exmoor over the past few weeks, and our March photo of the month captures perfectly the frigid feeling of this icy blast.

“I’m just a sheep farmer’s daughter now working at Whitsford, our family farm near Brayford, as my dad is in his late 70s,” Helen Cooke told Molton Monthly.

“The photo was taken whilst out feeding our sheep when a snow cloud closed in on us.”

“I’m just an amateur photographer that loves taking photos of our family and our beautiful countryside. I have always got my phone to hand for a number of reasons, including grabbing a shot of our animals!”

Helen didn’t edit the photo or use any filters, showing the true nature of this rural scene.

Village launches bid to buy its local

Campaigners in Chawleigh are trying to raise £225,000 by the end of March to save their local pub. They’ve launched a shares scheme in the hope of taking over the Earl of Portsmouth, to run it for their community.

“A village pub is the place where all can meet on equal terms, for a party, a musical event, a great value meal, a quiz or just a drink in comfortable surroundings,” said Allan Worden (pictured above).

“There is increasing evidence from university research that the rural pub adds to the health and happiness of the local community, and mitigates against loneliness and isolation - a problem exacerbated by Covid-19.”

The Earl of Portsmouth pub closed in November 2019. The new community takeover plan has won the support of the actual Earl, Quentin Wallop, and also the landlord at Chawleigh’s other pub The Royal Oak. The group have developed a business plan and have been awarded a Charter Mark by the Community Shares Organisation, which they hope will help to attract investors.

Covid-19 - half of Devon residents ‘already vaccinated’ It’s estimated that more than 50% of Devon’s population will have received their first Coronavirus vaccination dose by the end of February. The news comes as the UK Government announced that it now hopes to offer vaccinations to all adults in the country by July 31st.

By February 14th, more than 342,000 people in Devon had already had their first Covid jab, including 95% of the over 70s and many people classed as ‘clinically vulnerable’. Local vaccination centres around the county are carrying out about 12,000 vaccinations every day.

The number of positive Coronavirus cases reported in North Devon up to the last week of February had fallen to fewer than 25, down from peaks of 110 in January and 160 in December.

A new community Covid testing clinic has also now opened at the Civic Centre in Barnstaple, providing rapid tests for workers and volunteers.

Dr Alex Degan, lead GP for the vaccination programme in Devon, said, “GPs and their teams, local authorities and volunteers have worked tirelessly together to vaccinate people in the top four priority groups in recent weeks. Thanks to their magnificent and selfless efforts in protecting vulnerable people, hundreds of thousands of people now rest safer from the threat of Covid-19. It is a remarkable achievement and I pay tribute to everyone involved in this lifesaving programme.”

“Our staff are very busy at the vaccination clinic. They are vaccinating people, manning the patient check-in and updating notes, while other staff are in the surgery booking appointments,” said Gill Squire.

Extra £600,000 for potholes You can’t drive far on our local roads before coming across potholes - the A377 around Umberleigh, for example, is perhaps one of the worst affected.

Devon County Council is responsible for our highways, and now they’ve given the green light to an extra £600,000 to be spent on pothole repairs and drainage.

Council leader John Hart said, “Keeping our roads in a decent state of repair is a neverending job and there is never enough money to complete the job.”

“But it’s vital for all our residents and it’s vital for our businesses. I hope that this extra cash will help us meet people’s expectations.”

Local property market bouyant South Molton has seen ‘record levels’ in house sales in recent months across all price sectors, with buyers from out of the area and locals.

Christine Brend from Webbers explains more: Given our beautiful location and convenient connections, it is no surprise that over the past year there has been huge demand for homes in the area, this is consistent throughout all town, village and rural locations. Recent research shows that the pandemic has pushed people into making potentially a ‘once in a life-time’ moving decision, with the large numbers of people who either want more space or are working from home!

Despite the end of the current stamp duty holiday coming closer, the activity and demand is gaining momentum again since the New Year, with many buyers focussed more on the move and lifestyle change, than any possible tax saving. We will know more about any changes or adjustments to the stamp duty holiday in the chancellor’s Budget on March 3rd.

Winter’s icy blast

The first couple of weeks of February saw an amber weather warning for cold weather issued by the Met Office, as temperatures in North Devon dipped as low as -7C. Stephen Parr made the BBC Spotlight news with his dramatic photo of icicles at Blackmore Gate (above), and there were frequent flurries of snow, captured here on Exmoor by Rebecca Warne (below).

Blooming marvellous! Flower power coming to South Molton Plans are underway to turn South Molton into a blaze of colour this summer - hopefully the perfect antidote to the stress of living with the Covid pandemic.

“We want to make South Molton as pretty and colourful as possible, improve our local environment, and create a real community spirit by involving as many people as we can,” said coordinator Sue Harrison.

It’s hoped South Molton in Bloom will help everyone’s well-being, especially after such a tough 12 months. More than twenty green fingered volunteers have already signed up to help, and the organisers would like to thank all those businesses and individuals who have made donations so far and hope more will follow suit.

The South Molton in Bloom group aim to maximise sustainable planting with trees and wildflowers, and preserve and encourage pollinators, birds and wildlife where possible.

Organisers say they plan to enter the prestigious South West in Bloom competition with aim of ‘going for gold’. They’ve launched a Facebook page and will have a website up and running soon.

There will also be a front garden competition.

Everyone in the town is being encouraged to join in - whether it’s a simple hanging basket or a full display.

Udderly wonderful! Local milk deliveries born out of lockdown Tucked away on 15th century Farrs Farm, in the Taw Valley near Chittlehamholt, is a true family endeavour with a passion for ethical farming and quality local produce.

Three generations of the May family have invested their lives in farming the Devon countryside, and when the first Coronavirus lockdown hit in March last year they diversified to create a ‘micro dairy’.

“People are enjoying the fact that our milk is old school proper milk, with the nice cream top,” said James Lovegrove (left).

“We only milk our cows once each morning.

The rest of the time they’re out in the field or tucked up in their big barn. This keeps them relaxed and if they’re happy, we’re happy!”

They also leave calves with their mums (above), so the youngsters have their milk before any is taken to sell locally.

James moved to the farm in 2019 with his wife Tilly, daughter of farmers Richard and Michele May. The family started producing milk just for themselves with one cow - now they have 14.

The Maygrove ‘brand’ for their meat and dairy products came from mixing their surnames May and Lovegrove.

It wasn’t long before friends and neighbours started trying their milk - and now they’ve expanded production to deliver bottles in the traditional way to local communities, including Umberleigh, Chittlehamholt, Chittlehampton, Atherington, High Bickington, Chulmleigh and Burrington.

“It’s in glass, one litre bottles with silver metal screw top lids. We collect the empties when we deliver the fresh milk, which supports our ethical ethos of recycling and reusing as much as we can,” James told Molton Monthly.

“We have been totally blown away by the local support we have achieved already, and have had some lovely feedback.”

“Our respect for the land and the animals we raise is at the heart of what we do, creating superior quality produce.”

Jobs to do in March 1. Remove the top 2.5-5cm (1-2in) of old compost from permanent pot plants, and topdress with fresh compost.

2. Cut back perennials you left some protective top growth on, such as Penstemon and Perovskia. Cut just above buds on a low framework.

3. Prune coloured-stemmed Cornus to encourage new growth. For weaker-growing cultivars, such as Sibirica, a three-year cycle works well, removing one third of stems each spring.

4. Vegetables - sow indoors, or in the greenhouse to plant out later, seeds of Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celeriac, early leeks, lettuce, onions and peas.

5. Finish planting mixed hedges, including native species such as blackthorn, holly, hawthorn and hazel.

Now is the right time to prune established bush and standard roses and feed them as they come into growth. It is also a great time to buy new ones to add to your collection.

Whilst it is too late to buy bare root roses, container grown plants establish very easily and should still be widely available.

Farm Life - the March lion

In like a lion. Out like a lamb. That is the hope of most farmers, in that if we have to endure bad weather. It is usually better at the beginning of March with the progression towards sunnier days at the end of the month.

I make no apologies for again talking about our climate, as even with modern technology it still plays a huge part in the farming calendar. March is definitely the month when we hopefully say goodbye to winter and hello to the green shoots of spring.

That is one reason why so many shepherds lamb their ewes this month, so that the mums have fresh grass to produce an abundance of milk for their baby lambs. Crops begin to stir from their winter slumber and grass looks to accelerate its growth as the soil begins to warm.

Remember too, the clocks ‘spring forward’ one hour (on the 28th). Don’t do as a friend did, who put his alarm clock back by mistake and consequently was two hours adrift when he emerged from his sleep!

Laptop donations help schoolchildren South Molton business FHS Computers has stepped in to refurbish laptops (pictured right) that have been donated to be given to local schoolchildren in need.

“We decided to help when we discovered that some of our local schools weren’t covered by national donation schemes,” said Stuart Godfrey, who runs Fort House Systems in East Street and lives in North Molton.

“We live and work locally, and it makes sense to support local schools as much as we can. As a parent myself, I understand all too well the importance of computers during lockdown and especially home-schooling.”

If you have an old laptop or tablet that you no longer need and you would like to donate, please phone 01769 574603 or email: support@forthouse.com to arrange a dropoff, as the shop in East Street is currently closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The response has been overwhelming, and so far they have supplied computers to South Molton United C of E Primary, North Molton Primary and Bishops Nympton Primary schools.

All donated machines are tested thoroughly and securely erased, to make sure no old information remains. The most useful computer models to donate are laptops, followed by Chromebooks and tablets (but preferably not desktop PCs).

Use it or Lose It

Community News pages 50-57 Work starts on A361 upgrade causing major delays A turf cutting ceremony was carried out by Councillor Andrea Davis (pictured right), to mark the start of the £60 million A361 improvements between South Molton and Portmore roundabout at Barnstaple.

However, no sooner had work got underway, motorists took to social media complaining of delays of at least an hour getting through the roadworks (photo below).

Councillor Davis, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Infrastructure said, “I’m extremely pleased to see the start of work on this vital project, and no doubt these improvements can’t come soon enough for many people. Every effort will be made to minimise traffic delays, but unfortunately it will be unavoidable while this vital work is carried out.”

The scheme is expected to take three years to complete. Work is starting in a number of locations which will be widened along the link road, and temporary traffic lights will be in place for the first few weeks while both sides of the carriageway are cleared on these stretches.

Once this is done, a two-way traffic flow will be allowed, but a 40mph limit will be introduced as a safety measure.

Villages get fibre broadband George Nympton and Queens Nympton Parish Council say they are delighted that superfast fibre broadband has been connected to their rural communities.

The project has taken three years to complete, covering George Nympton itself and the surrounding areas.

A spokesman for the parish council said, “In common with many other rural communities we had suffered with speeds as low as under 1mbps - we can now purchase contracts up to 900mbps! This will transform things for residents and businesses in the area, especially in the current circumstances where we are working and studying from home, as well as spending our leisure time online.”

Nearby King’s Nympton already has full fibre broadband and now a campaign is getting underway in Chulmleigh to get many more properties connected. Residents in the town are lobbying North Devon MP Selaine Saxby and looking at a community partnership bid.

Locals help ‘DIY SOS’ TV show The hit BBC television programme DIY SOS returned to the screens in February, and featured several local businesses donating their time to help with a special build in North Devon.

Among the many trades people taking part were Mark Berry Plumbing and Heating (below left), South Molton Scaffolding (below right) and The Upholstery Workroom. The popular TV show, hosted by Nick Knowles and featuring designer Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, visited High Bickington in 2019 but the programme has only just been shown for the first time.

They rebuilt a home for the Collins family who have two young daughters Daisy and Amber with a rare illness called nephrotic syndrome, a disease that causes kidney failure and requires them to have 70 hours of dialysis each week. The remodelling of their home by dozens of local volunteers and the television team means they can now have their life saving dialysis at home.

Village fundraising for defibrillator in old phone box A campaign is underway to raise £2,300 for a potentially life saving defibrillator for the rural community of Heasley Mill, just outside North Molton.

The plan is to turn the village’s disused red phone box into a fully kitted out cabin. The Community Heart Beat Trust will carry out the conversion, which normally would have been funded by the British Heart Foundation.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the charity is short of money, so people in the village are stepping in to pay for it themselves.

There is going to be a ‘three Hamper Easter raffle’ starting on March 1st, with tickets priced £5 available from Bulleds store in North Molton, and direct from coordinator Claire Barron (contact info below).

The prize draw will be held on April 1st.

Cash donations towards the defibrillator fund are also welcome.

Having a defibrillator in a rural area like this on the edge of Exmoor, increases the chances of survival if someone goes into cardiac arrest. To get in touch with Claire Barron please call; 01598 740848.

Young cyclist’s Team GB trial Top cyclist Amy Pullen (right), who is in Year 11 at West Buckland School, has been selected as a ‘guest apprentice’ for Team GB cycling.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Great Britain Cycling Team is only taking on seven youngsters this year instead of fifteen, making Amy’s achievement even more remarkable.

Amy started cycling 5 years ago at the age of 11. She trains under coach Rob Wakefield and rides with Propello Cycling. Training takes around nine hours a week, with both long weekend rides and daily strength and conditioning sessions.

The student is now preparing in the hope that some races will take place this year.

Medical care by air, and on land As the number of 999 calls to emergency services across Devon continues to rise, South West Ambulance Service have approached Devon Air Ambulance to ask if they can support them with specialist care support during these unprecedented times.

The air ambulance charity has now added a third emergency response vehicle to their fleet (right), enabling them to help more patients receive the care they urgently need.

Operations Manager Darren Goodwin said, “We are very grateful to Volvo Cars UK and Kastners Exeter, who have come to our aid again. We are pleased to get this additional vehicle up and running so quickly to support our colleagues on the frontline ambulances.”

“This extra vehicle will mean another medical team can deliver their expert, enhanced and critical care to those that need emergency treatment as soon as possible.”

This third car is fitted out with the same medical kit as the charity’s existing vehicles. It has been kindly provided on loan from Volvo Cars UK. It will be crewed by Critical Care Paramedics, and the Volvo XC60 will create extra resource for the 999 operators to call on.

School Covid testing programme Along with other schools in the area, South Molton Community College is running Coronavirus testing for its pupils and staff.

The ‘lateral flow’ tests mean that results can be given in just 30 minutes. Those who test positive can immediately self-isolate to avoid passing the virus on to others.

If they test positive, they are then required to do another test which is sent away for analysis.

Staff volunteers have been carrying out the tests, so they are prepared for when pupils go back to school full time.

Multi million pound revamp planned for Barnstaple Barnstaple town centre is set to see a once in a lifetime £11 million transformation, thanks to a successful bid for a share of Government funding, supported by additional investment from North Devon Council.

The Market Quarter project includes a plan to pedestrianise and make improvements to Butchers Row and Cross Street, and aims to improve facilities in the Pannier Market and the Guildhall. At a time when many town centres have been thrown into chaos by the Coronavirus pandemic, it’s hoped these proposals will give a new heart to Barnstaple, making it a unique destination that will boost footfall to the high street and provide a better experience for residents and visitors.

Local councillor Robbie Mack says, “We need a bold and ambitious project so Barnstaple can become the social and economic hub it should be. It will connect the whole town centre and provide a more welcoming access to a newly revitalised Market Quarter. It’s a sustainable plan to safeguard the town’s future in the long term.”
