Molton Monthly - June 2021 Welcome to the June edition of Molton Monthly. It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching Midsummer’s Day after the wet, windy and positively wintry month we’ve had in May. Also coming up this month is the next scheduled relaxation of the Coronavirus restrictions.

June 21st is the date the country is expected to return largely to ‘normal’ following the various stages of lockdown. However, with the What’s Inside - June so-called ‘Indian Variant’ of Covid-19 P6-7 Photo of the month (did you know, it’s actually called B.1.617.2) P8 County council election results currently experiencing a surge in several P11-14 What’s On parts of England, it’s possible the Prime P18-19 Free Covid tests in South Molton Minister might have to put the brakes on his ‘roadmap’.

So here in Devon, health chiefs are once again urging us to be cautious, and to take advantage of the free, twice-weekly Coronavirus tests (see pages 18-19).

We have sport on the front cover this month, and congratulations to North Molton Football Club, winning the North Devon Premier League for the first time in their history, despite a season disrupted by lockdowns (see Community News pages 50-57).

Go with the ‘flow’ - everyone urged to take free Covid tests You might have seen the Covid-19 ‘community testing’ vans parked in South Molton recently, and Molton Monthly can take you behind the scenes this month to explain what they’re doing.

“We want everyone to feel safe when they leave their home, while taking the necessary precautions when out and about,” said supervisor Johnny Thornton. “That’s why we’re encouraging all adults in Devon to include regular rapid lateral flow testing as part of their weekly routine. It’s free, painless and results are back within the hour.”

Devon County Council have mobile vans which move around the area offering testing to people without symptoms of Covid-19. This service is available for anyone 18 and over that doesn’t have access to workplace testing, and they are offering two tests per week in line with the government recommendations.

You can also collect packs of home testing kits from the staff in the vans, which are parked in South Molton on Tuesdays 11 2.30pm and Fridays 3.30 to 7pm.

The van alternates between The Square and Central Car Park. Any changes to times or days for the testing team will be updated on their website: devon.cc/flow Lateral flow tests are only for people who do not have symptoms. Anyone displaying any of the main Coronavirus symptoms must still book a PCR test online: gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test Covid case rates throughout Devon remain low, but with restrictions lifting and socialising returning, health experts say now is the time to take regular tests to help break the chain of transmission.

Meanwhile more than one million Covid-19 vaccination doses were given in Devon between December 8th and May 2nd, and 7 out of 10 adults have had their first dose.

Rainbow Run aims to raise ‘pot of gold’ for children’s hospice Four year old Amelia-Rose Hurn (pictured right) is donning the colours of the rainbow this month to raise funds for the 30th anniversary of Children’s Hospice South West, and she wants you to join her.

She’s taking part in the charity’s ‘Rainbow Run Your Way’ fundraiser on June 19th and 20th.

It’s open to anyone who wants to get involved, and CHSW is encouraging participants to pick a route of any distance and complete it however they wish. It will be a chance to don a bright outfit and complete your distance by running, skipping, walking, skating or riding and have fun along the way!

Last year around 2,000 people raised an incredible £100,000. Event fundraiser Kiley Pearce said, “We were overwhelmed by the amount of people who got involved last year. We could see from social media that everyone really embraced the fun and colour that Rainbow Runs are all about.”

“To be able to raise at least £30,000 for each of our hospices in our 30th anniversary year really would be very special, and would help us to ensure that local children and families can continue to receive the vital care they so desperately need now and in the future.” The charity runs three children’s hospices including Little Bridge House, here in North Devon.

Local property - buy to let What is drawing people to the area, and what does this mean for buy to let investors?

One of the South West’s main characteristics is its size, there are plenty of places to choose from for your buy to let opportunity. It is the largest of the nine English regions, covering 9,200 square miles. It is said to be the least densely populated area in the country.

The open spaces, beaches, historic fishing villages and laidback market and surf towns make the region very appealing.

With so many factors contributing to the strong demand, it is no surprise that rents have increased over the past year. Overall properties are letting within the first few days of marketing, and the rental market has seen an increased demand from renters looking for all types of properties.

The UK’s largest property search site Rightmove has confirmed that Devon is now the second most searched location at the moment, with Cornwall in the top spot. Data shows that rental prices have risen 3% in the last 12 months.

The show must go on!

Arts festival takes centre stage

Despite the challenges thrown up by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, the Deep Roots Festival gets underway this month.

The flagship project of Arts Destination South Molton, it aims to bring together a broad mix of online and live events; community poetry projects, classical/folk/ popular music, exhibitions, talks and demos.

In 2021 it spans three weekends, in June, July and September.

This year there is a special ‘legacy’ element to the festival. Devon based poet, Rosie Jackson and filmmaker, Gordon McKerrow will work with South Molton’s community to create a film-poem ‘Capturing South Molton in Words and Images’, and everyone is welcome to join in! The film will be of images you have taken or made - photos, videos, paintings, sketches, and your voices reading

lines you’ve written. These will be edited together, making a “vibrant celebration” of our community, to capture this time as we come out of lockdown. Jobs to do in June 1. Divide bearded Irises after flowering, replanting sections with at least two fans of leaves attached.

2. Keep tubs and hanging baskets watered: check once (even twice) a day if strong winds combine with hot, sunny spells.

3. Take softwood cuttings of deciduous shrubs such as Spiraea, Buddleia and Caryopteris.

4. Sow fennel and oriental green such as mizuna and pak choi; sowing now helps reduce the risk of bolting.

5. Remove blanket weed from ponds by twisting around a stick. Leave weed at the side of the pond for 24 hours to allow any wildlife to crawl back to the water.

At the nursery in June we can finally breathe, all the potting is done, and the baskets are made and delivered. Now we are able to hand the hard work over to you!

Every day whilst watering your pots and baskets pinch off any dead flowers, it’s much less daunting if you do it every day. They will produce new flowers much more readily if they are not wasting energy growing seeds.

Farm Life - the beauty of hay meadows

Traditional hay meadows are not so common nowadays. In fact haymaking itself has been overtaken by silage and haylage which are less dependent on a spell of sunny weather.

June still evokes memories of days gone by, with the sweet smell of newly cut grass evolving into that unmistakable aroma of harvested hay. I remember the whole village turning out to help gather the bales on a warm summer’s evening. It was a social event, yes hard work, but their reward was a hearty supper and plenty of cider. Today it is highly mechanised with the only contact between drivers being their mobile phones.

We only make a few bales nowadays but in the middle of winter, when the strings are cut, the clock returns to those June summer days. Thankfully hay meadows are now being saved to encourage wildlife and pollinators. They can also bring vital nutrients up from within the soil.

Personally hay making brings back nostalgia for me. I’m not sure though if I could now face the prospect of pitching several thousand bales on to the trailer by hand.

Oh the enthusiasm of youth!

Clean team are dream team at youth homeless centre A team from a local company recently donated a whole day of work to deep clean Ashley Court, the youth homelessness centre at Chawleigh. Devon Surface Care employees toiled for more than seven hours scrubbing exterior walls, scraping moss off the roofs and cleaning gutters at the centre - all free of charge.

Rebecca Fry from the Amber Foundation which runs the facility, says they’re thrilled, “We’d like to say a massive thank you to them. The jobs were completed to a very high standard the walls next to our car park look like they have been repainted. The guys were an absolute pleasure to have here. They even had time for a lunchtime game of footie with some of the young people which was enjoyed by all!”

Devon Surface Care (pictured right) is a family run business set up by 2014 by Jonny Hardy, and work throughout the county providing exterior surface restoration to both domestic and commercial clients.

Amber houses and supports up to 30 young people at a time at Ashley Court. The young people who come to Amber are from across the area and are facing a range of complex issues including homelessness, long term unemployment and mental ill health. Problems that have only been made worse over the last year of the pandemic.

Lockdown art helps air ambulance Local artist Lorraine Pailthorpe (right) has created detailed drawings of South Molton to help raise funds for Devon Air Ambulance.

“I’ve always been interested in architecture and have admired the buildings in South Molton Square for many years,” Lorraine told Molton Monthly.

“Lockdown gave me the opportunity and time to have a go at capturing them on paper. I wanted to find a way to include as much detail as possible without being limited by perspective. I’m really pleased with the result and hope everyone likes them too.”

Community News pages 50-57 North Molton Football Club’s history making title

Grass-roots sport has taken a big hit during the pandemic, so it’s great to see North Molton Football Club winning the North Devon Premier League for the first time in the club’s history.

They were presented with the championship trophy (above) following a 2-0 home win over Hartland on May 19th, which featured goals from Billy Tucker and Joe Southcott.

They even had a socially distanced crowd to watch the match and historic presentation.

At the time of writing they’d notched up an impressive 19 wins from 19 games with one remaining. The club paid tribute to staff, players, supporters and sponsors for helping them through the Covid-affected season.

Bridges damaged by lorries Umberleigh Bridge (right) was struck by a lorry on May 17th causing large blocks of stone to fall onto the riverbank opposite Murchs Antique Emporium. The following morning a truck was left dangling precariously over the edge of Bickleigh Bridge, leaving it badly damaged and closing the A396 for several hours.

May wind causes problems Unseasonal strong winds and heavy rain throughout May brought down trees, interrupted power supplies and made driving conditions difficult. A removals lorry blew over while negotiating the tricky A39 near Countisbury Hill (right) on the evening of May 20th. The Met Office reports that more rain fell in May than in March and April together.

Landslip forces café closure, day after lockdown reopening

Heavy rain across North Devon and Exmoor during May led to a landslip which forced the popular National Trust Watersmeet café near Lynmouth to close on May 18th, just a day after it reopened following lockdown.

North Devon National Trust said it would be closed “until further notice”. The landslide happened on the narrow access road that runs next to the river, meaning deliveries weren’t possible. The trust says walking in the area remains unaffected.

Exeter Chiefs rugby for West Buckland student Josh Nalevea (right), was selected to play in the Exeter Chiefs Academy’s first match back after Covid lockdown.

Josh joined West Buckland in the Sixth Form but his passion for rugby was hugely curtailed by the pandemic, which saw grassroots rugby halted completely for months.

Despite this, Josh could be seen out on the school’s playing fields practicing his skills, almost every night.

He had been playing for the Chiefs Academy before the pandemic, but his selection for the first game back against Worcester in May was just reward for all the hours of dedication that he put in on his own.

Meadow plans and litter pickers ‘bloom’ Plans are underway to ‘re-wild’ part of Sheep Fair Field in South Molton, as a legacy of the town’s South West in Bloom entry. A grant of £300 has been awarded by North Devon Biosphere to the project led by Fran Sendell, which aims to plant native wildflowers to create a permanent meadow as a home for invertebrates, pollinators, small mammals and birds.

In the meantime, a new litter picking group led by Will Lock has been formed. The South Molton Wombles are looking for local people to join them in their efforts to tidy up the town to support the ‘in bloom’ volunteers (you can find them on Facebook).

“South Molton in Bloom would really love everyone in the town to join our enterprise now to make the town colourful, tidy and a great place to live,” said coordinator Sue Harrison. “We are so grateful to the Men’s Shed volunteers who are doing an amazing job creating sponsorship signs for all the fantastic businesses who have supported us.”

The planting is coming on in leaps and bounds all across South Molton, and there’s still time to join in the front garden competition, create some art to display or sponsor some planting.

Crime commissioner re-elected

Alison Hernandez (right) has been voted the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall for another term.

The Conservative has held the role since she was first elected in 2016. It’s a position which operates to ensure forces in England and Wales are running effectively.

Voting goes through two rounds. Alison Hernandez received 275,217 votes after the runoff of second preferences, 65.2% of the total votes cast.

Second place Gareth Derrick from the Labour Party received 146,979 votes after the second round. Turnout at the Devon and Cornwall PCC Election on May 6th was 37.2%, up from 22.8% in 2016, with a total of 510,381 votes cast.

Cheque for cancer charity North Devon cancer charity Chemohero has received a donation of £830 from South Molton Freemasons.

The town’s Loyal Lodge of Industry handed over a cheque from the Devonshire Freemasons’ WAKE fund at a socially distanced presentation.

Co-founders of the charity Lisa and Rob Wallis met with the Lodge’s Master John Finch and it’s Chief Fundraiser Peter Kyle (pictured above right).

Chemohero provides ‘Boxes of Kindness’ to patients attending North Devon District Hospital’s Seamoor Unit for chemotherapy treatment. Over 40 different items go into a box of kindness, and since it was founded the charity has donated more than 1,500.

The Freemasons’ association with the charity began when John Finch himself received a kindness box while in the hospital in 2019.

“Your first chemotherapy appointment can be stressful and frightening. Receiving a box like this reminds you that you’re not alone, and that there are people who know how you feel, and who are willing to help make things easier for you,” said John.

The charity says it is “enormously grateful’ for the latest donation from the group.
