Molton Monthly - July 2021 Welcome to the July edition of Molton Monthly. This month marks my 5th anniversary of taking over publishing the magazine - how time flies! Thanks very much to everyone for your continued support, especially during this pandemic rollercoaster.

The next relaxing of restrictions has now been delayed until July 19th at the earliest, amid concerns about a possible ‘third wave’ of What’s Inside - July Covid-19 cases nationally and locally.

P6-7 Photo of the month P8 Health Secretary visits hospital For the last couple of months our area had seen cases in low single figures and even zero, and although we’re still well below the national average there has been an almost sixfold increase across North and Mid Devon.

Plus there’s been an outbreak among pupils at Chulmleigh College (pages 18-19). It’s meant large numbers of schoolchildren isolating and further disruption to learning.

Our July cover photo by Karolina Andreasova is about the ‘Skate Molton’ group, who are bringing new life to the town’s skate park, and it’s all part of the wider South Molton in Bloom project (pages 22-23 and more on 48).

Despite the pandemic, Chulmleigh Old Fair is set go ahead, maintaining its centuries old tradition (see the community news section).

Owl on the hunt

A short eared owl hunting on Exmoor, a moment of natural beauty captured by local photographer Simon Dibble. Normally winter visitors, these owls have been seen as late as May prompting speculation there could now be breeding pairs here.

“These owls have given me the run around over the years and I have lost count how many times that I have gone out with my camera to find them, and returned home with nothing!” Simon told Molton Monthly.

“On this particular day I was lucky enough to spot the owl hunting in the distance and hoped that this was the day that I would actually come away with an image. Dressed in full camouflage, I got myself into position, kneeling low in the long grass in the hope that the owl would hunt in my direction.”

“I didn’t have much visibility as I wanted to stay low and not be seen. This was challenging as it meant that I had to shoot through the grass if the owl came in low.

It finally made an appearance and gradually got closer and closer, with gentle and slow beats of those long wings.”

“It was a brief encounter, and I did have to take the picture focusing through the grass.

Moments later, the owl turned and headed away from me. That didn’t matter though as I got the image that I came for.”

Health Secretary confirms hospital funding

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has visited North Devon District Hospital, where he met the team and patients, and confirmed future investment in local facilities.

“The Secretary of State was impressed by the level of innovation he saw, and how we have responded to the challenges faced as the most remote acute hospital in mainland England,” said chief executive of the hospital trust Suzanne Tracey. “He also said that NDHT has a really positive vibe to it, and this is testament to the efforts made every day by our staff.”

North Devon District Hospital is set for a multi-million pound redevelopment by 2030, as part of a national £3.7 billion Government funded programme.

Plans for new North Molton Country Fair Local businesses and craft makers are being invited to get involved in a new charity fair due to take place at North Molton Sports Club on August 22nd.

The North Molton Country Fair is raising funds for the Over and Above Hospital Charity, and is being organised by Kate Tearall who is the Community Champion at Tesco Extra in Barnstaple.

“After the last 18 months I think now more than ever we need traditional, family focused events that offer something for everyone,” Kate told Molton Monthly. “Charities have found it increasingly difficult to fundraise, and local businesses have had it hard too. We hope it will help to support everyone, with the added bonus that all proceeds are going to charity!”

Entry will be free, although there will be donations boxes around the site. If you’d like a stall they start at £20 for a 3m x 3m pitch. To book one please email Kate as soon as possible for a registration form: kateoto@yahoo.co.uk Covid Secure measures will be in place, depending on the Government restrictions at the time.

The organisers say they’re hoping for a fantastic day out for all the family, jam packed with local entertainment, delicious food and some of North Devon’s finest local businesses.

Covid-19 - caution urged amid rise in cases An outbreak of Coronavirus at Chulmleigh College led to two complete year groups of pupils being told to self isolate. Public Health England was called in to advise after seven children in Year 9 tested positive and one in Year 8 in mid June.

“Everyone at Chulmleigh College is saddened by the outbreak of Covid-19 in our school. Until now, we have not had an outbreak of Covid amongst our pupils,” Executive Headteacher Michael Johnson told Molton Monthly. “We’re hoping that the steps we have taken throughout the pandemic, to ensure pupils have kept within bubbles whilst in school, will limit the spread and that the infections will remain confined to this group.”

“We isolated pupils on related bus routes and in two year groups on the advice of Public Health England. We are in constant contact with them regarding the measures we need to take, and will act on their advice. We thank pupils and parents for their kindness and understanding.”

The news came as Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that what was hoped to be the final stage of the easing of lockdown restrictions would be delayed from June 21st until at least July 19th. It followed a rise in Covid-19 cases nationally, which started to be reflected locally towards the end of June.

For several weeks our area had remained in low single figures, but in the first two weeks of June there was a rapid increase to around 30 in North Devon and more than 25 in Mid Devon. Case rates are currently said to be highest, and increasing most rapidly, in those aged 20 to 39 years old.

“I ask all Devon residents to be patient. We will get there, but we need to move with great caution,” said Steve Brown, Devon’s Director of Public Health. “We are seeing case numbers start to rise in the county and we will see the Delta (Indian) variant becoming the dominant strain.”

“We must therefore continue to follow the all important rules on social distancing, wear face coverings when indoors in public places and wash our hands regularly.”

He reiterated calls for everyone to use the free lateral flow tests regularly, and to take up vaccine invites.

Director of Mass Vaccination, Flu and Testing at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Sue Wilkins said, “It’s incredible to think that in only six months we have managed to set up the vaccination programme here, give three quarters of adults in Devon their first dose and half the population their second.”

As adults 18 and over are now getting their Covid-19 vaccinations, the efforts of staff and volunteers have been hailed as ‘incredible’ as Devon’s vaccination programme marks its six-month milestone.

“So many people have worked so hard to make this happen and we are really very proud of all that the staff and volunteers have achieved.”

More than 1.3 million doses of the vaccines have been given in the county, since 81-year-old Kathleen Viney became the first person to have one in Devon.

Volunteers get their skates on!

With skateboarding set to feature in the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan for the first time later this month, South Molton’s skate park has been given a new lease of life.

“It’s a real asset for our community,” lead volunteer Verity Hanson told Molton Monthly.

“It’s great for fitness and socialising, what we’ve done here is to create a cool and inclusive vibe where families and young people can mix and create new friendships.”

Opened in 2006, the skate park had come close to being shut down, until Verity and her volunteers got stuck in after being inspired and supported by South Molton in Bloom.

Now artists seroh_fr, krazeuk83, Matt, el_neaxo24 and Henry Brewer with his family have painted South Molton themed murals,

and a new Skate Molton group meets there on Saturdays. “It’s amazing to have the great mix of skateboarders, scooter riders, roller bladers and roller skaters like me all turning up and inspiring each other with our different skills,” added Verity, who is aged 41 and lives in Molland.

Verity took up the sport roller derby 8 years ago, and firmly believes the South Molton skate park is something the community should be proud of. It’s hoped to develop sessions for different age groups.

Local property - country homes in high demand The demand for North Devon properties remains high, with greater numbers of people looking for larger properties with more space. According to one leading building society, annual house price inflation is at its strongest level in nearly seven years.

Low borrowing and affordability is giving buyers more purchase power which is placing upward pressure on property prices. The market is moving so fast that if you blink it increases in value!

There are still some nervous homeowners out there who have been waiting for restrictions to ease before making their move, threatening to ratchet up the level of completion even higher.

If the full unlocking goes ahead as scheduled this ‘new blood’ could enter the market, meaning even more buyers chasing the ‘must have’ properties of the year - namely detached homes with plenty of outside space, and village properties.

While many predict house prices will taper off once the stamp duty holiday ends later in the year, we expect to see continued growth. This is because the change in lifestyle preferences driven by the pandemic are likely to remain relevant.

The girl with the ‘hero arm’ For most of her life, Nicola Berry has been known as the ‘girl with one arm’. Now the 28 year old NHS ward clerk from Chulmleigh has raised thousands of pounds for a revolutionary new bionic hand that she hopes will transform her life.

“At work people would say ‘do you know Nicola?’ and when they said no, they would say she’s the girl with one arm, and then they’d instantly know who I am!” explained Nicola. “I don’t want to be known as that anymore. If I am going to be referred to by the fact that I have a limb difference I would love to be known as the girl with ‘The Hero Arm’.”

The Hero Arm she’s referring to is the world’s most affordable multi-grip bionic arm (below), manufactured using innovative 3D-scanning and 3D-printing by a company called Open Bionics in Bristol. Not available on the NHS, similar devices would cost £60,000 - the Hero Arm is just under £10,000. Each one is designed specially for the person who needs it.

Nicola (pictured right) was born with one hand. She started a Crowdfunding campaign which raised £3,849, she got a £1,000 grant from the Douglas Bader Foundation and £4,849 from the charity Open Bionics Foundation, set up to help people afford to buy the prosthetic arms.

She is dedicated to her job with the NHS, working as a ward clerk in the busy orthopaedics department at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

“I’m so glad I finally plucked up the courage to do it,” Nicola told Molton Monthly. “My neighbour convinced me in the end.”

“Now that I am an adult I can’t wait to be able to do all of the little things in life that I haven’t been able to do, or ever believe was possible for me to do on my own.”

Jobs to do in July 1. Deadhead roses and keep them well watered to stop powdery mildew. Pick off any leaves affected by blackspot or rust.

2. Keep bedding plants, containers and hanging baskets well-watered and feed them weekly with a high potassium liquid feed to keep them flowering.

3. Sow a late crop of dwarf French beans now, and towards the end of the month, kohlrabi, pak choi and other oriental vegetables and spinach for autumn cropping.

4. Harvest summer-fruiting raspberries and, as they finish, cut out fruited canes. Thin and tie in new ones to support wires, spacing the stems about 10cm (4in) apart.

5. Provide safe places for young frogs to hide and shelter by having low-growing plants around the edges of your pond.

With increasingly hot summers it’s vital to keep an eye on how much water is used in our gardens. There are lots of ways we can all try to save water: Remove the competition – keep on top of the weeding. Mulch – mulches prevent water evaporating from your soil. Improve your soil – dig in lots of well-rotted manure or homemade compost every spring.

Collect rainwater – by installing water butts.

Be selective – not all plants need the same amount of water, fruit and veg are worth the effort but the lawn does not need watering.

Farm Life - the shows must go on

July is traditionally the time for the popular one day agricultural shows. Unfortunately not all are taking place this year and the ones that are have new Covid-19 rules to adhere to.

We are grateful for those that are scheduled to run, such as our local Mid Devon Show on Saturday July 24th at Knightshayes. They are so important to our community in bringing town and country together for a day. There is always something for the whole family to enjoy.

Lots of animals both large and small. Machinery from vintage to high tech. Local crafts and skills to admire. An array of different foods and drink. A feast of fun and entertainment to watch in the main ring. With so much more, they all come together to form the ‘rock concert’ of the countryside!

The most significant aspect of the shows though is the chance to meet up with friends and colleagues. Mentally it is even more important this year after what we have all been through.

In fact, having the chance to chat and enjoy a quality day out keeps us all going - especially when a friend of mine with a glass half empty said, ‘into July now, going towards winter’.

Creating a storm - South Molton’s Rugby League team There’s a new game in town, and you are being invited to give it a ‘try’! Rugby League is a branch of the sport that’s perhaps better known in the north of England, but there’s now a thriving scene here in the South West, and Tarka Storm have recently set up their home in South Molton.

Founder Neil Edwards is a 21 year veteran of the Army, sadly forced to retire due to mental health issues following a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Rugby League has given him the focus to help turn his life around. “I didn’t know what to do with myself and to be honest, I was lost,” Neil told Molton Monthly. “Rugby League is an old love and it’s really helped fill the void.”

His daughters came up with the Tarka Storm name, as it reflects the area they recruit players from around the Tarka Trail, and Henry Williamson’s novel Tarka the Otter. The team is now based at South Molton Rugby Club and is looking for new players aged 16 or over to join them.

Competing in the South West League, they’ve already proved their winning ways and now they’re looking to develop a “relaxed and fun family club”. They aim to branch out to include juniors, girls, ladies and masters teams.

New speed limit and barriers for A361 roadworks

A 40 mph speed limit is now in force on the A361 between South Molton and Barnstaple, and traffic barriers (above) have been put in place to protect the workforce carrying out roadworks.

A spokesman for contractors Alun Griffiths said, “The next phase following the ground clearance is to mobilise our plant and work teams to areas we will be widening so they can begin construction work.”

“We have established one compound near Landkey and we will create another close to West Buckland on the A361, plus we’re creating site offices for administration near South Molton.”

The £60 million project to upgrade eight junctions and widen parts of the link road to improve safety is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, a cluster of rare purple orchids (inset above) spotted by a member of the public growing wild on the roadside have been safely relocated.

Firefighters’ blooming big clean up!

South Molton Fire Station’s crew volunteered to help with the town’s South West in Bloom entry, clearing a massive twenty bags of litter from Pathfields Business Park.

They swept pavements, cut back vegetation and picked up plastic bottles, drinks cans and other rubbish including wheels, tyres, lengths of piping, steel, doors, timber, buckets and signs.

South Molton in Bloom coordinator Sue Harrison paid tribute to the firefighters’ hard work, “A massive well done, what a great community effort.” SWM Waste & Recycling provided a skip, with Mervyn Way giving space for it in his yard.

Sue says a “big town tidy” is planned for July 11th, and townsfolk are invited to come along to help the newly established ‘in bloom’ litter picking group South Molton Wombles. Meet at 11am on the central island opposite the Spar Shop - bring a small trowel or fork, gloves and litter picking gear if you have it.

“June has been a very productive month for South Molton in Bloom, as all the beds are now planted,” added Sue. “Thanks to all our generous sponsors, we should have colour coming up year after year.” The front garden competition and art displays are still running - you can get information from Daisy Park or the window of Chanters Baker.

Lee Hatters of Andrew Symons said Ryder’s story had touched everyone’s hearts

Young Ryder’s tractor treat As an early birthday present, Andrew Symons Ltd gave young Ryder a New Holland peddle tractor, and treated him to a seat in the real thing (below and right).

It came about after his family appealed for tractor drivers to do a ‘drive by’ in South Molton to celebrate his 2nd birthday in style at the end of July.

Tractor mad Ryder was born with Pierre Robins Syndrome leaving him with additional needs and a multitude of health issues that have seen him on life support twice, with frequent visits to Bristol’s children’s hospital.

Following the appeal on social media, he will be picked up from his home in a brand new Massey Ferguson tractor, and driven to M Way & Son on Pathfields Business Park where a special display of tractors has been organised by Ashley Sanders. It’s due to happen around midday on July 31st His mum Michaela Holland said, “He really is a shining light and our warrior, he’s overcome obstacles that we were told would be impossible.”

There’s a new mayor in town

South Molton Town Council has appointed its mayor and deputy mayor for the year ahead.

Councillor Mervyn Way has replaced Paul Henderson as mayor, with Councillor Stephen Lock as his deputy. Due to Covid-19 restrictions there isn’t a formal swearing in ceremony this year.

Celebrity Joe Wicks supports local youth homeless charity The Amber Foundation at Chawleigh has announced that the well-known lifestyle and fitness coach Joe Wicks (right) has agreed to become the charity’s new patron.

Village pub saved Campaigners have called time on their plans to save the Earl of Portsmouth pub in Chawleigh after a buyer came forward wanting to take it over.

The Earl of Portsmouth Preservation Society had been trying to raise more than £200,000 during the pandemic so that the closed pub could be taken over and run by the village community.

All those who bought shares in the project are due to get their money refunded. The campaign group thanked everyone for their support and said they’re looking forward to their first pint when the Earl reopens.

Ode to the Ash tree Help create an interactive poetry map for South Molton Community Woodland as part of this summer’s Deep Roots Festival.

Courage Copse Creatives CIC are asking local people to write poems about Ash Trees - these can be anything to do with Ash, including effects of Ash Die-back.

Submission deadline is July 11th, with details online: bit.ly/AshPoems Don’t know where to start? Pop into South Molton Library where you’ll find an ‘Inspiration Board and Ash Treasure Box’.

Plus free workshop for adults at Courage Copse on Sunday July 11th, 10am - 3pm.

Learn Samba in South Molton!

A new group is starting in South Molton to bring you the exotic sound and rhythm of Samba!

The one-hour classes start on Wednesday July 21st, with beginners at 7.30pm and those more experienced at 8.30pm. The venue is the Dance Centre in Mill Street South Molton.

Non-profit group South Molton Samba will provide all drums, bells and whistles!

Memories of Charles village Can you help with information about this photo (right)? It’s believed to be the last service at the Bible Christian Chapel in Charles village and is being used to launch a history exhibition.

Organisers of the Charles Village History Exhibition would like to know if anyone recognises any family members or have other memories of the picture. They’re also looking for personal stories and history from anyone who has lived there.

The exhibition is open from July 17th to through to September 11th at St John the Baptist Church, Charles EX32 7PX (from 10am daily).

South Molton Community Connections based at Amory House is closing due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lack of volunteers.
