Molton Monthly - January 2021 Welcome to the January edition of Molton Monthly - after a truly challenging time for all of us in 2020, here’s to happy and healthy New Year! This issue is again published slightly later than normal so that I could include the latest on the Covid-19 restrictions, as the Government has now announced a third full national lockdown (see page 16).

I’d like to send my heartfelt thanks to all of our readers, the many businesses who advertise and last but certainly not least, the fantastic delivery team who bring you Molton Monthly every month. It’s been a tough year for everyone, and the latest lockdown announcement has made things a whole lot harder.

Don’t forget, shop local is not just for Christmas - please do it all year to help support local jobs and our economy.

There is some good news to start this month and 2021! On the cover is 90 year old Hector Delbridge from North Molton, one of the first people in North Devon to receive the Covid vaccine at the new inoculation centres now open in Barnstaple (see pages 14-16).

The message from the local NHS team is, please don’t contact your surgery or hospital about the vaccines - they’ll be in touch when it’s your turn. Stay safe this winter, and here’s to better times ahead.

Startling starling!

The humble starling, or Sturnus vulgaris, shows its often hidden beauty in our photo of the month taken by well known South Molton photographer Jo Hackman.

Although a common garden bird, it’s actually now on the ‘red list’ for conservation in the UK having seen a shocking 50% decline in its breeding population in the last 25 years.

“I love watching these in the garden, they stick together but can really squabble, just like some families!” said Jo. The starling is perhaps best known for its murmurations - basically a mass aerial stunt with thousands of birds all swooping and diving in unison. It’s completely breathtaking to witness.

It’s thought they do it for many reasons.

Grouping together offers safety in numbers – predators such as peregrine falcons find it hard to target one bird in the middle of a hypnotising flock of thousands.

They also gather to keep warm at night and to exchange information, such as good feeding areas. They flock together over their roosting site, and perform their wheeling stunts before they roost for the night.

Media students flying high with air ambulance project The media team at Exeter University and fellow students in Canada, have teamed up to create an exciting new marketing campaign for Devon Air Ambulance.

They have created a video advert aimed at not just encouraging donations to the charity, but crucially trying to appeal to a younger audience.

Ginette Gisborne, who led the project on behalf of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said, “We’re so pleased to have had the opportunity to work with such a professional, creative and genuinely talented group of

students on this project.

From the initial brief, they took on board the message we wanted to convey and carried out the necessary research on which they based their designs. They should be very proud of what they have achieved.”

Exeter Student Daiki Shinomiya (above) said, “It’s been an honour for everyone on the team to work alongside such an important charity.

We reached out to the Devon Air Ambulance earlier this term with the hopes of helping a charity impacted by COVID, and to provide an invaluable opportunity for students around the world, regardless of their academic background.”

The Exeter University Student Media Team worked with Ontario College of Art & Design University and Simon Fraser University.

The finished video is now live on big screens at the Guildhall Shopping Mall in Exeter, and at both of the city’s railway stations.

Covid-19 - first local vaccines bring New Year hope Hector Delbridge, aged 90 and from North Molton, says he’s now looking forward to seeing family and friends again as he became one of the first people in North Devon to receive the new Covid-19 vaccination.

“I’m very pleased to have the vaccine,” Hector told Molton Monthly. “It will be a big relief to see people and for everyone not to be worried about me anymore. I’m looking forward to having my second jab in a couple weeks.”

Hector is pictured right having his first injection on December 29th at North Devon District Hospital, where vunerable patients will be vaccinated. A specialist vaccination centre run by local GPs has also been establised at Barnstaple Leisure Centre - this will look after people who are registered with South Molton Medical Centre and Lyn Health. The Chulmleigh area is set to be in the next phase of the roll-out early in the New Year.

People are still being reminded not to contact their practice or hospital to ask about an appointment – the NHS will contact you when it’s your turn.

Local GP, Dr Sophia Erdozain said, “We’re pleased to be offering the Coronavirus vaccination here in North Devon. We have 14 GP surgeries who quickly worked together with great dedication, skill and efficiency to ensure that these life changing vaccinations are delivered to our communities. We’re holding clinics where we can provide the vaccines in a safe and socially distanced way.”

North Devon had seen another worrying rise in Coronavirus infections and deaths in the run up to Christmas, although this appeared to be stabilising early this month. At 8pm on January 4th, Prime Minister Boris Johnson appeared on TV to annouce a third national lockdown.

Digging deep to combat climate change Volunteers from the Sustainable Chulmleigh group have planted hundreds of trees as part of a new environmental initiative called Woods4Water, aimed at reducing flooding and improving water quality in local rivers.

“It was great to have so many willing volunteers. 25 adults and 9 children helped plant 700 trees on just the first day,” said one of the organisers Claire Withers. “It is just over a year since we formed Sustainable Chulmleigh and had only managed to hold two events before the Covid-19 lockdowns. I think people were just so relieved to get back outside and feel they were doing something really positive for the environment.”

A mix of more than 1,200 native tree species have now been planted by the volunteers at Lakehead Farm to improve water quality and reduce the downstream flood risk to local communities on the River Mole Taw catchment area. “Without their help, we would have struggled to have got half the planting completed. What a great crew & a massive ‘thanks’ to everyone who has helped get our project completed,” said landowner Leica Lucas-Ridge.

Woods4Water is managed by North Devon Biosphere. Alongside planting two acres of new woodland at Chulmleigh, six ‘leaky dams’ - like those created by beavers (see pages 22-23) have also been made to help slow the flow of water during heavy rains.

Bryony Paul, Pledge for Nature coordinator at the Biosphere said, “Planting large numbers of trees can be a time and labour intensive process so it is fantastic that the community are helping out local landowners. These trees will benefit everyone by providing habitats for wildlife, reducing flood risk and helping to combat climate change. Planting a tree is also very rewarding as you feel that you are making a real and tangible difference for nature.”

Rewilding: Beavers’ first dam on Exmoor in ‘half a millennium’ Beavers released by the National Trust as part of a river restoration project have built what is believed to be the first dam on Exmoor for more than 400 years.

Ben Eardley, Project Manager at the National Trust, said, “It might look modest, but this beaver dam is incredibly special – it’s the first to appear on Exmoor for almost half a millennium and marks a step change in how we manage the landscape.”

“What’s amazing is that in only a few weeks it created an instant wetland. We’ve already spotted kingfishers, and as the beavers extend their network of dams and pools, we should see increased opportunities for other wildlife, including amphibians, insects, bats and birds.”

Footage captured on wildlife cameras shows the animals gnawing nearby trees and collecting vegetation to create a dam (pictured right) across small channels that run through the Holnicote estate in west Exmoor.

It appeared just nine months after the animals were introduced to slow the flow of water through the landscape and improve river quality and biodiversity. The beavers were the first to be released into the wild by the National Trust in its 125-year history.

Beavers are often referred to as ‘ecosystem engineers’. Given the right conditions, they can build dams to create deep pools of water which offer shelter from predators and places to access and store food.

Ben continued, “The winter rain we’ve had is a reminder of the significant role beavers can play in engineering the landscape. As we face into the effects of climate change and more frequent extreme weather events, natural interventions like this need to be part of the solution.”

Beavers became extinct in the 16th century due to hunting for their meat, fur and scent glands. Since the early 2000s, they have been reintroduced at a handful of sites in Britain.

Although controversial with some landowners, evidence is mounting that beavers could help improve the state of our waterways. A five-year trial on the River Otter in Devon was recently hailed a success by the UK Government, who are now consulting on a national strategy for the reintroduction and management of the animals.

Art house!

A striking moorland mural has been painted on the gable end of a house at Umberleigh.

It shows a chance encouter, as a man and his dogs come across a stag and a herd of deer on their daily walk on Exmoor.

James Lewis commissioned his friend and artist John Crush to paint the scene on his home alongside the A377.

It took seven weeks to create the artwork.

James said, “Years ago my grandad and I were walking our dogs and the deer were on one side of the wall and the dogs on the other, so this is like a moment captured.”

Tributes paid to Dick White They turned out in their droves. People lined the streets of South Molton on a damp and grey morning, to pay their last respects to well-known local figure Dick White.

“My dad touched the lives of many, many people over the years. They certainly broke the mould when our dad, grandad, stepdad, husband, brother and friend to many, was made,” said his daughter Shani. “He was one of a kind, a truly wonderful man.”

“He was very much a family man,” his wife Jane told Molton Monthly. “He was always at the heart of the community, and always doing something for someone.”

‘Dicko’, as he was known to many, passed away aged 70 on December 9th.

As a young man he played football for North Molton, Bishops Nympton and Chittlehampton, and later was a referee.

Always active, you might have found him cutting the grass on the football and cricket pitches. He was on the committee at North Molton Sports Club for many years, where he became chairman.

He even helped lay the foundations and start building the sports hall, and went on to run the bar - all this while running his own business DW Bodyworks, which is now run by his son Adam.

Dick was also well known as a football manager, especially the North Molton ladies’ team. Many will also remember him as an active member and president of the Lions Club of South Molton.

For a decade he was landlord of the New Inn in South Molton, “a dream come true” said his wife Jane. Later he could be found serving with a smile at both the town’s rugby and Conservative clubs.

Dick White was laid to rest after a service at North Devon Crematorium on December 18th. His funeral cortege drove through South Molton, including passing the site of his beloved New Inn (pictured right).

Donations were made to the charity Prostate Cancer UK, including more than £400 raised by locals at The Coaching Inn. Hundreds of tributes poured in on social media. Paul Brown said, “RIP Dicko. A friend of my family and a former neighbour. Glad to see he got a good send off, a really lovely guy who will be missed by many.”

“He will be sorely missed. He was loved by so many,” said Gigi Kingdon.

Liz Bulled added, “RIP Dicko. He was such a lovely man.”

“The amount of people lining the streets was truly humbling,” said Claire Harris.

Chris Hosker wrote, “RIP Dicko - a great and wonderful person.”

Jobs to do in January 1. Add winter interest with shrubs such as Hamamelis, Cornus and Sarcococca. Delay planting until spring if the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

2. Remove old leaves from Helleborus x hybridus so the emerging flowers can be seen better.

3. Prune Wisteria this month or next, shortening the same shoots that were pruned in summer back to two or three buds from old wood.

4. Force Rhubarb for a tender early crop by covering plants with a forcing jar, or upturned plant pot (ensure the drainage holes are covered to exclude all light).

5. Encourage woodpeckers into the garden with a home-made feeder. Drill holes into a rotten log, fill them with suet and hang it from a sturdy tree.

Well, 2020 is finally over and I believe most of us are glad about that. If one thing has become obvious this year it is how important our gardens are to us. Whilst it’s too cold and wet to get outside, you can plan how you are going to develop your garden further this year. If we have some drier days then now is a great time to plant roses, fruit trees and bushes and ornamental trees.

Farm Life - riding the rollercoaster

Farming is always a bit of a rollercoaster. The weather can be a friend or foe. Diseases such as Foot and Mouth in 2001 and more recently the return of Bird Flu can challenge our resolve.

Political decisions, and worse still indecision, can create uncertainty and undermine confidence. One constant is that animals need looking after every day of the year, especially as we head into the depths of winter.

Feeding and bedding is a routine that has its own rewards of a job well done, especially when you see the contentment on their faces (photo right)! We shelter them from the storms and look forward to new life being born.

Farming cannot be switched on and off but we are so lucky that a job, which has its challenges, gives us so much satisfaction. Often quoted as a way of life, it is an occupation that is never dull, but is so rewarding being so close to nature.

As a dear friend of mine said; try to leave this green and pleasant land a little better than you found it. “Wishing you all a more positive 2021,” Roger.

Santa Run raises £75,000 for children’s hospices People in North Devon were among an army of fun runners raising cheer in their festive gear for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) in mid December.

More than 1,100 people across the South West took part in the charity’s Santas on the Run Goes Freestyle virtual event – helping to raise more than £75,000 to support the region’s three children’s hospices, including Little Bridge House in Fremington, near Barnstaple.

The charity’s annual Santas on the Run events, became ‘virtual’ this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. People were asked to ‘go freestyle’ and choose their own route, activity, distance and festive fancy dress and raise as much as they could.

CHSW fundraiser Kiley Pearce said, “We were overwhelmed with the number of people who took part in this event and it was fantastic to see them all posting their photos on social media showing how they had made the event their own.”

“We had everything from Santas playing tennis, to a running nativity scene; people really got creative and have raised an incredible amount of money at the same time.”

Santas, elves and whole host of festive characters were spotted all over North Devon, including in South Molton, Arlington Court, Barnstaple, Westward Ho!, Woolacombe and Bideford. Filleigh Primary School pupils were among a number of schools also taking part.

The money raised by the event will help Children’s Hospice South West to continue providing vital care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

The charity has adapted its care model during the Coronavirus pandemic to provide hospice, home and virtual care, acknowledging the need to stay in touch with families and support them in new ways through these uncertain times.

CHSW is the only children’s hospice in the South West. It costs around £11 million to run its three sites each year and the charity relies almost entirely on voluntary contributions Their services are free for families.

Drive electric The first new electric vehicle charging points have been installed on Pathfields Business Park in South Molton, and now North Devon Council plans to install more this year in the hope of encouraging residents to ‘drive electric’.

“This is really exciting, and it’s great news for our environment too,” said lead member for Economic Development and Regeneration at North Devon Council, Councillor Malcolm Prowse. “We believe that providing additional ‘EV’ charging points in North Devon is a great first step to encouraging our residents to buy a cleaner, greener car.”

A tender process has taken place and the chosen supplier will be expected to install rapid chargers at NDC car parks, in return for income from the charging devices. It is compulsory that all suppliers source renewable energy for the charge points.

Researchers claim that electric cars are better for the environment, emitting less greenhouse gases and air pollutants than a petrol or diesel car.

The council says it is “great news” for residents who have been put off buying an electric car due to a lack of charging points in the district. The EV devices will be capable of charging every car currently in production by the major car manufacturers, and it’s hoped this will encourage North Devon’s residents to consider buying an electric car or van in the future.

Community News pages 50 - 58 Fantastic fridge!

The new South Molton Community Fridge gave out more than a tonne of food in its first month that would otherwise have gone to waste. It’s been a fantastic effort by the volunteer team.

In the coming weeks, including the February half term, they plan to give out food parcels to those in need this winter.

More than 100 parcels, which will include fresh fruit and vegetables, will be handed out or delivered - helping approximately 170 people in our community, half of which are children. People can get in touch via their Facebook page or call 07901 765082.

Toys bring Christmas cheer The Every Toy Matters appeal helped 86 children get a Christmas gift this year.

Organised by Simone Dunford (below), the South Molton Christmas Toy Bank took in donations from members of the public and businesses, and distributed them to local children in need.

Stress free If life is more stressful for you at the moment and you need help to manage it, free online help sessions are being offered by South Molton based Jacqui Footman.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), also referred to as ‘tapping’, is described as self-help psychological acupressure. Research from Bond University in Australia states that it has been shown to reduce the stress hormone Cortisol, helping you feel calmer and more clear-thinking.

Jacqui Footman, Chair of the UK-registered charity EFT International, is providing free ‘tap-along’ one hour group sessions every Friday lunchtime at 12.30pm on Zoom. People can meet online to work through anything that is stressing them at the moment in a “mutually supportive environment”.

There is also a free Friday afternoon group (4.30pm) specifically for any frontline workers.

School raises £1200 for food bank

Students and staff at West Buckland School cycled 874 miles, the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and raised more than £1200 for the Northern Devon Foodbank.

They had hoped to raise £200, so they say they’re delighted at the result which will help up to 1000 local families access much needed food. The Covid Secure charity fundraiser took place on exercise bikes at the school (pictured above), with some completing as much 80 stints.

Country hero Dave Knight has been named as one of 12 Mole Valley Farmers ‘Country Heroes’ across the South West for his work on Exmoor.

He was nominated for his voluntary position as chairman of the Exmoor Hill Farming Network for the past 6 years. His prize was a country hamper worth £500 (pictured right).

Exmoor Hill Farming Network provides support to 330 farms and 565 members. Among its initiatives is helping to mitigate the feelings of isolation and loneliness among the local farming community, which has been particularly important during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The judging team said, “Without Dave dedicating so much time and skill to the group, it would not have become what it is today. Thank you for your tireless passion to serve the farming community of Greater Exmoor. It is our privilege to name you as our Country Hero.”

Burrington explosion An office building was destroyed in an explosion at a communications site near Burrington on the evening of December 23rd.

Fire crews from Chulmleigh, South Molton, Torrington and Barnstaple attended the scene, along with engineers from Wales and West Gas and Western Power who made the site safe. One person was rescued, but thankfully no one was hurt in the blast.

Builders merchant launches campaign to support local businesses With the pandemic having a detrimental effect on local businesses, RGB Building Supplies’ latest ‘Support Local’ initiative is giving away £500 worth of independent shop and venue vouchers every week until the end of January.

Every Monday until January 25th, RGB will run a giveaway where prizes will include ten £50 vouchers to spend at an independent high street store, five £100 vouchers to use on a holiday cottage in the region, and ten £50 local attraction vouchers.

Phil Sparks, Branch Manager at RGB South Molton, said, “There are many businesses in our area which have been struggling to survive this year, so it’s vital we do what we can to support each other.”

Exmoor Pony Society centenary

The Exmoor Pony Society is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. It was originally founded when a group of farmers met at the Red Lion Hotel in Dulverton, to discuss creating a society to protect the breed for future generations.

The Exmoor pony is Britain’s oldest breed of native pony, thought to be little different from the original wild ponies that colonised Britain many thousands of years ago.

A registered charity, the Exmoor Pony Society was set up in 1921 by moorland farmers for the registration and conservation of the breed.

The society has worked with Exmoor National Park Authority and the Rare Breed Survival Trust for many years to ensure that the Exmoor Pony survives in its natural habitat.

Air Ambulance Award Devon Air Ambulance has picked up a national ‘Covid-19 Response’ award, along with its engineering partner Babcock. They created a custom screen to keep the pilot safe from the treatment area.
