Something a little different for our August photo of the month, as we take a trip out on a fishing boat off the North Devon coast. Photographer Yasmin Jackson, from Dartford in Kent, was on holiday with her family and says she was lucky to join Lynmouth fisherman Matthew Oxenham on a trip out to pick up lobsters during their week stay. Yasmin’s photo captures perfectly a traditional Exmoor scene, where the coast meets the countryside and centuries of traditional practices remain to this day. “It was the most spectacular outing. There was just so much to see and as a keen bird watcher it was just brilliant,” Yasmin told Molton Monthly. “It was our first time in North Devon and it did not disappoint, we will definitely be back!” Matthew Oxenham’s family has worked the boats out of Lynmouth for generations and he now offers tours of our spectacular coastline and its wonderful wildlife (phone 01598 753207). Whether it’s rural life like this, nature, sports, special events, wildlife, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. We usually only feature one each month in the magazine, but show more on our Instagram and Facebook pages: @MoltonMonthly

Molton Monthly signs up to Nature Recovery Declaration With nature in serious decline across our area and climate change coming ever into focus, North Devon Biosphere has launched an ambitious recovery programme. “If we are to turn the tide for nature’s recovery, everyone in northern Devon needs to engage through their choices and actions,” said Mike Moser, Chair of the Biosphere Nature Improvement Group. “Today our wildlife is a shadow of its former glory and our natural systems are ceasing to function. It’s time for urgent and transformative local action.” Molton Monthly has now signed the organisation’s Nature Recovery Declaration

and has been accredited as a North Devon Biosphere Business Partner. Magazine publisher Pete Robinson said, “I believe it is the most important thing we can do in our lifetimes. The natural world urgently needs our help. Without a healthy environment, humanity might simply cease to exist. We must act now to tackle climate change and help heal nature.” The aim is to help nature recover and expand natural areas in North Devon by 2030, aligning with the Government’s ‘25 Year Environment Plan’ and the Prime Minister’s pledge for 30% of land in the UK to be protected by that date. Olympic dream comes true “It’s never too late to chase your dreams,” the words of North Devon athlete Phil Norman (right) who has flown out to compete in the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. He will be racing in the gruelling 3000m steeplechase for the Great Britain team. It hasn’t been the most conventional journey to compete on the world stage. “I started the sport at 8 years old and then quit at 18,” Phil told Molton Monthly. “Many, including myself, would have thought my Olympic dream was over, but I decided to give it another shot at the age of 25.” “Now, just over six years later at the age of 31, with a full time job and a baby boy on the way - I have finally achieved my dream.”

Phil’s grandad, the late Fred Norman was born at Crossbury, near East Buckland, and his father Chris is himself a running coach and an official at North Devon Athletics Club. “He has been training long and hard and in recent times, mainly alone,” said dad Chris. “It is great for North Devon Athletics Club to have role models like him.” “It proves that you can still compete with the best, even living hundreds of miles from the big cities. We at the club are proud of the quality of athletes we have helped excel over the years, and will all be cheering for Phil in the 2021 Olympics!” Phil has taken unpaid leave from his job as an Openreach engineer to focus on his training. “It has been far from easy. Many sacrifices have been made along the way,

not just by myself but my wife Coral and coach Tomaz,” added Phil before flying out to Japan to compete against the world’s best steeplechase runners. “Congratulations to everyone on their selection, every athlete works so hard to get to this moment. I want to thank everyone for their support throughout my journey, and I hope to do you all proud in the GB vest in Tokyo.”

Covid cases ‘highest they’ve ever been’ as restrictions ease By the third week of July the number of positive Coronavirus cases had risen almost seventeen-fold (1700%) on last month, with 550 reported in North Devon (300-plus in Mid Devon). Last month the figures were 30 and 25 respectively, and almost zero in April. As we went to print, Devon’s health bosses said case rates were “the highest they have even been”, with the Delta variant spreading quickly, especially in those aged between 10 and 29. The ‘third wave’ has already had an impact, with local businesses forced to close temporarily due to staff isolations. Steve Brown, Director of Public Health Devon, said, “Positive cases are rising across the UK and in Devon, driven by the much more contagious Delta variant.”

“Coronavirus is an airborne virus. It spreads most easily when people are in close proximity and when indoors in poorly ventilated spaces.” He says the public should continue to wear face coverings, practice social distancing and take extra hygiene steps - even though as of July 19th they were no longer due to be a legal requirement. The mobile Covid-19 testing van (above) is now in South Molton between 9am to 12.30pm on Tuesdays and 1.30pm to 5pm on Fridays. Alongside regular testing everyone is urged to get vaccinated, especially those working in hospitality. “Please continue choosing to take steps that minimise risk to ourselves and to others, even when that choice is ours to make,” added Steve Brown.

Local property - demand still exceeds supply The stamp duty frenzies may be behind us but the property market prognosis remains bright, with the stamp duty holiday now reduced to the lower threshold of £250,000 until the end of September we can still expect to see a healthy level of demand. Even once the tax break is removed in the autumn we do not anticipate activity to slow. The understandable concern is that prices will ease, however low interest rates and a fast recovering economy underpin long-term price strength. Rising house prices will continue to create challenges for those seeking to buy, this will support the continued growth of the private and buy to let market. South Molton in Bloom judgement day! The sun blazed down as South West in Bloom judge Richard Taylor (right), toured South Molton with his clipboard and camera. Organisers now have to wait until October 7th to find out his decision and how the town fared in the 2021 floral competition. South Molton in Bloom coordinator Sue Harrison said, “I was bowled over by how everyone joined in. Sunshine enhanced the mass of colour and beauty.” “We are so grateful to everyone, businesses and individuals, for getting involved and appreciating our work. Special thanks to Elaine Symons and her loyal helpers Bridget and Linda, for filling the town with artwork... (continued on page 28)

and to Chanters for letting us use the shop as a workshop and display centre.” “Thanks to all the volunteers who have been tirelessly digging for gold for the last five months. Watch this space, as we have so many plans for the coming year,” continued Sue. Judging took place on July 13th. The front garden competition was judged by Lady Arran from the Castle Hill Estate at Filleigh. Vikki Macnab (right top) from Ash Drive claimed first prize for her “creative and clever use of limited space.” Second went to Marilyn Cole from Alexandra Terrace and third to Gill from Tower Park.

South Molton Mayor Mervyn Way presented Hazel Kerslake from Naturemade in South Street (below centre) with the top prize in the closely-faught shop window competition, judged by the mayor and his wife. “It was great to see so many people joining in the competition and we hope it will be even bigger next year, with the theme being The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee,” added Sue Harrison.

The frontage competition saw Vonn Bourne from Court Cottages (right bottom with her daughter) take top honours, with Lisa from West End Terrace second and Terri from East Street in third.

Jobs to do in August 1. Most rambling roses flower just once in summer and as they flower on the old wood they should be pruned after flowering. Thin out one in three of the old stems at the base and tie in new replacement shoots. 2. Apply nematodes for control of vine weevil larvae later this month or early next. Target plants prone to attack, (Heuchera, Sedum and Primula) especially in containers. 3. Give hardy Geraniums a light trim to encourage another flush of flowers. 4. Lift spring sown onions and shallots once the foliage yellows and topples over. Dry bulbs in a single layer in full sun outdoors, or in a greenhouse or well-ventilated shed 5. Cut established perennial wildflower meadow. Leave clippings on the ground for a few days to encourage self-seeding. At this time of year whilst you are all enjoying the fruits of your labour, we are already planning next year’s production. New catalogues arrive and orders are placed very quickly before they sell out. The highlight for us this year is going to the summer showcase of our main supplier, Ball Colegrave in Banbury. We will have the opportunity to see all of their varieties growing in the ground or in baskets and containers, so we can choose the ones we think are the best for next year. Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - the honey makers by Roger Hill

The farming calendar rolls on with harvesting in full swing. After a cold spring, crops caught up very quickly. A burst of hot sunshine and heavy showers resulted in the fastest growing period for many years. Unfortunately weeds also galloped away. Even though the jobs on the farm never relent, there is the saying that ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ In other words it is essential that we make the effort to have a work-life balance. As I mentioned last month, it is show season which provides the chance to have a few hours away. For the sport enthusiasts amongst us, this summer is a bonanza on TV - cricket, football, rugby, athletics and much more provide a welcome relaxation. Back to the harvest but a little different one for us - honey. The abundance of wild flowers around our small vineyard have been pure heaven for the bees. Again the late spring diminished food supplies initially because our buzzy friends did very little flying. They certainly have caught up of late! I cannot wait to taste the new season’s honey harvest on the homemade bread my wife makes for us and our guests. ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)

Emily’s gruelling 100 mile challenge for children’s hospital West Buckland School Sixth Form student Emily Davies is taking on a huge challenge this month to run, cycle and row 100 miles in just three days to raise funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital.

“In order to get myself where I am today, it has taken a lot of grit and determination. However, I fully recognise that if it were not for the incredible people at Bristol and the outstanding care that they offer, things may be very different,” added Emily (below).

Emily, who has just finished Year 13, has chosen this mission as a way to give back to the hospital which has helped her so much. As a result of being born four months premature, Emily was left with cerebral palsy. She explains, “I have some spasticity which mainly affects my right leg. Despite some of the mobility challenges that my disability presents me with, I consider myself very lucky as I am more or less able to live my life like the rest of my family and friends.”

Emily has chosen 100 miles as her target as this is the distance between her home and the hospital in Bristol. She hopes to take a degree in Sports Science at Cardiff Met and says she feels very positive for the future. In May this year, she turned eighteen, which meant that it was time to leave the care of Bristol Children’s Hospital, so she wants to say goodbye and give something back to the place that has given her so much. The student is aiming to raise at least £2,000.

The shows go on! Emerging from lockdown, several key events went ahead throughout July. Devon County Show returned on July 2nd with a bumper three day event, despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic. Proof that people were eager to get out and about again after being in lockdown was shown with 90% of tickets sold in advance for this year’s show. Thousands flocked to Westpoint to enjoy the first full county show in the UK for nearly two years. South Molton Vintage Rally Club held its first post-lockdown run on July 11th, with a tractors diriving a circular route from South Molton out to Bish Mill, Molland, Hawkridge and Tarr Steps (opposite). As we went to print, the Mid Devon Show

the South Molton team tackle the ferocious blaze, which saw town centre roads closed to traffic for several hours. “A huge thank you to everyone from the bottom of my heart,” said the mother who escaped from the fire, who asked not to be named. “Words fail me to describe how grateful we are to the amazing fire crews.” “If not for the community support, we wouldn’t be able to cope, so thank you. We are so glad no one got badly hurt and our thoughts are with the Chanters Bakery team too,” she added. A fire service spokesman said, “The flat was severely damaged by fire and the bakery damaged by fire and water. The cause of the fire was confirmed as accidental.” One person was treated for injuries at the scene before being taken to hospital for checks. The fire, which it reported to have started in a microwave, also spread to the loft of a neighbourting flat. Crews finally left the scene at 5am, 12 hours after the fire started. Chanters Bakery began an urgent search to find new premises to work from so they could resume baking again. Man dies in road crash

Please email 101@dc.police.uk or call 101, quoting log number 0496 of July 19th.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision involving a car and a lorry near South Molton that left a 58 year old man from Bideford dead.

Meanwhile, two people were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a collision on the A361 on June 23rd.

It happened on the B3226 near the North Aller roundabout outside South Molton, at around 1.40pm on Monday July 19th.

Three cars collided in the 40mph speed limit zone between South Molton and Landkey, leaving the link road closed for several hours.

The male driver of a silver Hyundai Ix35 car was pronounced dead at the scene by the ambulance service. The lorry driver was uninjured. Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information or dashcam footage which may have captured either vehicle prior to the collision that could help with their enquiries.

Road repairs on A377 Work is finally underway to repair the sections of road on the A377 at Kingford near Umberleigh, where the embankment has been eroded by the River Taw. Traffic lights will be in place, and there may be temporary road closures over the next three months. Natural stone will also be placed alongside the river bank to try to prevent it being undermined in future.

Boys’ skateathon raises £600 for teen cancer charity Bertie Walker and Reuben Burgess (pictured right) braved the searing heat on July 17th to ride their scooters for four hours at South Molton skatepark, all in the name of charity. They managed to raise just under £600 for the Teenage Cancer Trust through their sterling efforts. The two lads thanked everyone for their support. The first ever Skate Jam is scheduled to be held at the town’s skatepark on August 21st. Organisers say everyone is welcome, and they are planning a fun day for all the family. The aim is to raise funds for maintenance and improvements to the facility. Look for Skate Molton on Facebook.

South Molton u3a - Still Thriving Like so many other organisations South Molton u3a have had to curtail their activities during the Covid-19 ‘lockdown’. But that didn’t stop them keeping in touch as they made the most of the available technology. Monthly get togethers moved to Zoom online with talks covering a wide range of topics including ‘Time through the ages’, ‘North Devon Ambulance’ and a fascinating tour of ‘Hidden London’. With restrictions now lifting the plan is to start monthly get-togethers at Filleigh Village Hall from September. “The u3a is a wonderful organisation open to all in their ‘3rd age’, which is defined not by a particular age, but by a period in life in which full time employment has ceased,” said local u3a promotions officer Gill Saunders.

“The ramblers are back making the most of local footpaths and there are numerous other activities starting again. We would love to see members, new and old joining in again.” If you would like to find out more about what is going on and join the fun, email: PR@southmoltonu3a.co.uk or call on: 01769 572005 (Gill Saunders - South Molton u3a Promotions Officer)
