The North Idaho CollegP Popcorn f orum and Convo• cation Series h.ive presented forums and symposia on a broad rani:e of issues and problems for nearly ii quarter of a century. The i.eri~ provides a pldtfonn for the free e~pre~ion of divergent viewpoints.

This year's topic "Our Dissolving Priw1cy: Wllo 's Minding Your Business?"" will provide an opportunity to discusi, the meaning of privacy, the ilSSaull on privacy, and the me.11!,ures to protect privacy.

The week-long ~ymposium will examine the various way\ in whi< h government bureautrades, business employel'!,, c:redit a(encies, insurance companies, or even a distrusting ~po~e. could use high-powered computers, video cameras, electronic mail, voice· d<livaled ta1u• recorder\, scanners for cellular or cordless phones, undetectable hugs, and o ther such devices to ~noop on an unsuspecting party. The modern computer and telecommunication a~e has n-mowd all lhe o;eries physical barrier. to succusful sun-eillance of persons.

The symposium will also 1,ace the modem American idea of the right to pri11acy back to Louis D. Brandeis and Samuel Wurren, who wrote in 1890: "Tiu• com· mon law secures to each individual the right of deter· mining ordinarily. to whal edenl his thought, senti· ments and emotion$ shall be communicated to olh·

Robert Ellis Smith is a journalist who uses his training as an attorney to report on individuals' right to privacy. Since 1974, he has published the popu· lar Privacy Joumal. Smith has compiled a clearinghouse of information about computer data hanks, credit and medical records, wiretaps. polygr.iphs, the law of privacy, and psychological and physical privacy.

Smith is a graduate of Harvard and Georgetown Law Center and was an assistant director of the privacy project for the American Civil Liherties Union. He is a member of the Human Rights Com· mission of the District of Columbia.

Maria Wilhelm is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in philosophy from the University of California at Ber· keley. Wilhelm, a San Francisco native, started as a People Magilli11e stringer in her home town in 1980.

She later moved lo Washington, D.C.. to become People Magazine ·s bureau chief al the beginning of 1989. In 1991 Wilhelm was promoted to associate editor of People and relocated to New Yori< Gty. The Desert Storm War broke out and Wilhelm traveled to Saudi Arabia as a field reporte r.

"I'm really a field re porter," she said, "and probably the farther afield the bette r."

In Saudi Arc1bia, Wilhelm was forced to ta~e c1 taxi because women are prohibited from driving.

"She's smart and talented e nough to gel the story." says assistant managing editor John Saar, "and tough-minded enough to ~eep he r head in the worst circumstances."

Harvey Richman is an attorney at law practicing primarily in Lhe area of litigation and civil rights in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Richman was first admitted lo the practice of law in Florida in 1964 and admitted in Idaho in 1983.

Richman has tried cases in the state and federal courts in Idaho and Florida, as well as in the federal courts of Georgia and Alabama. Richman has tried cases in the federal Appellate Court, in lhe 5th.

11th and 1 !.l circuits.

Richman isa ,trong advocate for the protection of indi"idual rights unde r the United States and state constitutions. He has a s pecial constitutional interest in the protection of individual privacy.

His address will suggest that there are political movements afool in !he United States and espe• dally in the Paciflc Northwest to enact state constitutional amendments a nd initiatives that would al· tack the right to privacy involving pe r..onal relation· ships.

Crisp was elected Arizona Republican National Committeewoman in 1972 and re-elected to thal post in 1976. She served as secretary to the 1976 Republican National Convention and was elected cochairoflhe Republican National Committee in 1977.

She has served as a senior advisor and National Political Director to Business Executh-es for Na· tional Security, Inc. She currently serves on several national advi\ory boards and was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection or free apression in Charlottesville. Virginia Crisp has a B.A. from Oberlin College and a master's in political science from Arizona State.

Thomas Wright Lawford VIII holds a B.S. degree in communications from the University or Idaho. He ~ (hdirman of the U of I College Republicans (1987-88). Youth Committeeman to the Idaho GOP aecutive Committee ( 1989-present), and State Ch,1irman or the Idaho Young Republicans ( 1988· present).
