With 27 new cases in the Western NSW Local Health District reported on Tuesday, including 18 in Dubbo and one in Orange - it appears that Cabonne - stuck in the middle - will not come out of lockdown this week.

The Cudal Bowling Club was, on Monday, listed as an exposure site relating to Thursday September 2 between 5:30pm and 6:30pm.

Then a positive result was received from a test sample taken from Molong sewersage on Monday 30 of August prompting the activativation of the pop-up testing facility at the Molong Railway Station last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

NSW Health stopped testing the Molong sewerage soon after it returned a number of negative results. However, given the number of positive COVID cases in Dubbo and Orange - Molong being on the main road between both Cabonne Mayor, Kevin Beatty and Member for Orange Phil Donato made representations to NSW Health to resume the testing at Molong.

Cabonne’s vaccination percentages at the end of August were 61.31% had a first dose and 31.7% had both doses. These figures, supplied to the Cabonne Mayor from Commonwealth health sources, were in contrast to the 45.4% and 22.7% reported in a facebook post by Sam Farraway MLC on 2 September. The latter is believed to be an error in information supplied.

NSW Government meets to discuss lifting lockdown restrictions this week and will make an annoumcement today.

Mr Barilaro said on Monday that Dubbo was "no hope" of being released from lockdown soon and other Western NSW Local Health District hubs like Orange and Bathurst had "very little" chance of enjoying some additional freedoms this week.

He said crisis cabinet will meet on Wednesday to discuss which regional areas will come out of lockdown on September 10.

They will consider criteria such as the number of active cases, and their proximity to other local government areas with high numbers.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games held many inspiring moments as professional athletes from countries across the world gathered in the challenging times of COVID restrictions.

What drives the professional paralympian athletes to achieve incredible outcomes in their chosen sporting fields? Moreso, what determination does it take mentally and physically - to rise above a birth disability or an accident that can change the body and mind in one split second. Followed by the grief of one’s losses, achieving

self-survival and the years of rehabilitation and the rebuilding of one’s body and soul.

Double amputee, Vanessa Low simply says “I made a decision”. Could you or I do the same?

“The power of the mind” is often talked about. The great boxer, Russian born Kosta Tszyu refers to the greatest computer in the world being our brain - with the words - if I did not lock my computer into place during training or competition I would not achieve nor survive.

The problem is that we allow our hearts our emotions our bodies to control our computers (brain/mind).

Think about it in your life?

Does anything hold you back from achieving your goals?

Fear (perhaps), Comfort Zone (perhaps), Not wanting to be different from the rest (perhaps), or tackling the need, as Vanessa Low did - “I made a decision”.

We don’t all need to be elite Olympians ... we don’t all need to be Oxford Scholars , we don’t need to be Prime Ministers ... or achieving women or men.

When Vanessa Low lost both of her legs in a tragic train accident in her home country, Germany - at the age of 15, she was told that she would never walk again. She spent two weeks in a coma, 6 months in hospital and underwent 9 surgeries.

The toughest part of her journey was to overcome the heartfelt emotional loss of her limbs and other significant injuries.

She had to learn to overcome the emotional loss, her fear and belief in her abilities - in a word that had taught her the opposite. Her achievements at the recent Tokyo Paralympics was about taking action against the odds and setting her mind into place through adopting a different set of values - selfrespect,determination, choices and courage.

Vanessa comments “I made up my mind to reach beyond perceived present limitations and making the decision to take charge creating a life beyond fears, a life on her new feet. Today’s normality, being able to walk and run on a daily basis, is the product of a strong vision, resilience and perseverance, made possible by hard work and a passionate heart”.

Today, she competes at the elite athlete level where she simply removes her walking legs and changes into her running legs to take part in long jump events, running etc.

At Tokyo - Vanessa broke World Record 3 times - most of these were hers from previous games/competitions. !

“This is a very special one (Tokyo). I know Rio was my first gold but being able to do this experience alongside my husband and being able to do it on the day with Scott by my side, having a familiar face in the crowd, was so special and I am so very grateful for this opportunity,” Low told Channel 7.

“I was working down the paddock with my dad and brother. Dad went to grab the sprayer so my sixteen-year-old brother and myself were digging the last hole of the day with the post hole digger,” he said.

“I was standing a bit too close and my shoelace got caught in the power-take-off (PTO) shaft and the rest is history.

“I woke up on the ground, my lower leg completely amputated, two and a half kilometers down the paddock and 25km from the nearest hospital.”

Scott still believes he is lucky to have survived the accident “but didn’t understand what it meant until one day I looked under the hospital blanket and realised I was an amputee.” He spent three and a half weeks in a Canberra hospital in and out of consciousness, before being sent home to recover.

“I also broke my femur in the accident so I had to wait for it to heal before I got my first prosthetic leg.It was quite a short recovery but I think that was the benefit of it happening when I was so young. I was young, naive and keen to live life.”

Less than 12-months after his accident, Scott learnt to water-ski and began competing in the sport. He soon became a three-time world champion before moving onto a career as a T42 100 meter runner.

2022 Cabonne Acquisitve Art Prize now open

The Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize is returning again in 2022!

The Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, now in its third year, aims to foster a sense of identity, pride and place in Cabonne, whilst encouraging and showcasing the high calibre of creative talent in the region.

The winning artwork will be acquired by Cabonne Council and will join Michael Carroll’s 2020 painting “Gordon’s Garden”, and Amanda Holman’s 2021 painting “Storms Gathering Over Mount Canobolas”, which are now in the Cabonne Council Art and Heritage Collection.

Holman’s winning artwork is currently hung at the Cabonne Council office in Molong, where it will continue to be housed until a permanent display is established at the new Cabonne Community Centre, which is currently undergoing construction.

“I am so honoured to have won the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize 2021. The exhibition is a wonderful platform to showcase local artist of all ages and experience,” Holman said.

The award is going from strength to strength, with over 70 exhibitors entered the 2021 competition.

The Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize Working Party Chair, Councillor Libby Oldham, said that she is

excited to see the award go ahead in the coming year.

“It has been a pleasure to see the growth in the recognition of the award since its inception in 2019.

Having an outlet for creative talent is so important in regional and rural areas like Cabonne.” She said.

Applications are now open to all artists who wish to enter the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize.

There are also two categories that encourage the young artistic talents of the Cabonne region - The Primary School Art Prize, and the Secondary School Art Prize. With nearly $6000 worth of prizes up for grabs, there has never been a better time to enter your artwork!

Doses set to increase at ADF clinics - Gee

The dosage capacity of ADF pop-up vaccination clinics in Orange and Bathurst is set to dramatically increase over the coming days, thanks to millions of extra Pfizer doses arriving on Australian shores.

The dramatic increase in available doses is due to the recent vaccine swap negotiated by the Australian Government, which will see an extra 4.5 million Pfizer doses from the U.K and Singapore hit our shores.

On the first day of scheduled ADF pop-up vaccination clinics in Orange and Bathurst, the ADF Vaccination Outreach Teams administered 500 doses of Pfizer at each location.

Federal Member for Calare, and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee, said it was fantastic that many more people will have the opportunity to get a jab this week at an ADF pop-up clinic.

“It’s terrific that plans are now being made to ramp-up the dosage capacity,” said Minister Gee. “With COVID-19 cases continuing to crop up in the Central West, there’s no time like the present to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community from the virus.

“On Monday, the Orange pop-up clinic reached capacity before it even opened, with people coming out in droves to line up for a jab before the sun came up.

“At Bathurst, the clinic hit capacity by 10am with the day’s supply of Pfizer exhausted within the first opening hour, after hundreds of people rushed to the clinic to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

“The enthusiasm on show to get vaccinated is fantastic, and I’m thrilled Central West locals are taking advantage of the ADF pop-up clinics to shield themselves from the virus.

“A surge in dosage capacity will mean that a significantly greater number of people will be

able to get their first dose.

“People 12 to 59 years of age can receive a Pfizer vaccination at any ADF pop-up clinic, and children do not need to be in a priority group to get a jab.”

“People who have already received their first dose can get their second jab at an ADF popup clinic, just remember to cancel your existing booking - if you already have one – so someone else can take your spot.

“The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has strongly recommended anyone aged 18 years and above to get any available vaccine, and has given the green light for children 12 years old and up to receive the Pfizer vaccine.

“The faster we all get vaccinated, the sooner we can put lockdowns in the rear-view mirror.

“More than 60% of eligible people in the Central West have received their first dose, with a third already fully vaccinated. These are fantastic numbers, but I’d like to encourage those still on the fence to attend an ADF popup, or book an appointment at one of the many clinics, GPs and pharmacies offering the vaccine.

“Across Australia, some 21 million vaccine doses have now been administered, and we are now hitting well over 1 million doses administered every few days,” said Mr Gee.

The transition to living with ‘endemic’ COVID could be rough

In the Orwellian world of the pandemic, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews’s raising of the white flag on “COVID zero” was greeted positively by the Morrison government and with relief by many among the public who are at the end of their tether.

We’ve now officially moved into a new stage. As federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said on Thursday, “the pandemic has become endemic”.

In accepting Victoria couldn’t get back near zero, Andrews was following NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who lost control of the virus, with daily new cases in that state now running well above a thousand and rising.

Only weeks ago there were hopes of suppressing the outbreaks in both states. When it was becoming obvious NSW was failing, Berejiklian was criticised for not locking down early and hard enough.

Andrews went hard immediately – and failed too.

Living with COVID is a reality – it’s not an option,” Berejiklian said on Thursday, sending the blunt message to premiers still set on COVID-minimalism that they’d have to accept the Delta world.

As they will. But not for some time, if they can help it.

Australia’s federation is now more fractured than at any time during this crisis, in a toxic mix of policy differences and politics, exacerbated by the approaching federal election.

WA’s Mark McGowan must be concerned as to how he’ll eventually reintegrate his state into the rest of the country, which he accepts must happen at some point. With WA vaccination levels lagging, he’s not tying himself down but says he’ll set a date when “the time is right” (assuming he’s not mugged by a runaway outbreak). He wants to ensure vulnerable sections of the population are fully protected. The state’s isolation and insulation help him.

Economic imperatives for WA’s opening will strengthen, but McGowan can usually outplay the federal government on the politics.

Last year Scott Morrison had to make an embarrassing withdrawal from the Clive Palmer challenge (subsequently lost) to the WA border closure, after it became clear local public opinion was strongly on the state government’s side.

This week federal AttorneyGeneral Michaelia Cash, who’s from WA, mused about how an action could be more successful in the changed circumstances of a vaccinated population (not that the federal government is planning to launch a case).

McGowan seized the baseball bat. “West Australians don’t want me to bring [the border] down now, to give in to this sort Mick Tsikas/AAP of crazy bullying by the federal government, and infect our population, lose jobs and shut down part of our economy, including the mining industry,” he said.

This highlights, incidentally, a point often overlooked in the heated political rows. Talk about “opening” WA and Queensland refers to opening borders. Internally, these states are “open” – unlike the shuttered NSW and Victoria.

McGowan is usually careful to avoid overreach. In contrast, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk went over the top when she defended her closed border with an emotive claim about the danger to young children.

Local farmers, Bill and Janine Marriott's Seymour Carbon Farm, has been nominated for the Excellence in Environmental Enhancement and Sustainable Agriculture award in this years Cabonne Daroo Business Awards.

Carbon Farming is simply farming in a way that reduces Greenhouse Gas emissions or captures and holds carbon in vegetation and soils. It is managing land, water, plants and animals to meet the Triple Challenge of Landscape Restoration, Climate Change and Food Security. It seeks to reduce emissions in its production processes, while increasing production and sequestering carbon in the landscape. Carbon farming adheres to the same principles of supply and demand found in all agribusiness, however, the commodity produced are ‘carbon credits’.

Carbon Farming can range from a single change in land management, such as introducing no-till cultivation or grazing management, to a wholeof-farm integrated plan which maximises carbon capture and emissions reduction.

Remembering John Clyde

Eulogy from John’s family

John with family, Yvonne, Natalie, Janet, John Gordon and Malinda

On behalf of our family, we would like to thank everyone that is here today, streaming in from afar and those who have sent their condolences. We have received many phone calls, texts, flowers, meals and kind thoughts. All of which have given us such comfort in this very sad and emotional time in our lives and has reminded us of the impact that Dad/ Poppy/ Pop/ John/ Clydie has had on so many people. We have lost a truly wonderful, kind, funny, giving and generous man.

Dad spent his whole life in Molong, the place he loved the most. As a child, he got into a significant amount of mischief and some how he never got caught and remained Granny's golden boy to the end. Some of the antics he got up to included­stealing a dog from a man who was camped by the creek, sneaking out at night to play poker and smoking a cigar and trying to hide the smell from Granny. These are just a few stories and we are sure there are plenty more.

A lot of people claim to be a ‘Jack of all Trades’ and Master’s of None ... but John Clyde was one of few people who could claim to be the ‘Jack of all Trades’ and Master of well, most!.

He was determined, talented, pigheaded and stubborn. Once he started his career share farming out west as his father had done before him - but after a few very wet years with harvest going on forever, he realised it wasn’t very profitable.

Clydie became a very capable builder, carpenter and cabinet maker working with the likes of Wally Earle, Davo from Orange and Johnny Hill our own local legend.

Eventually he built his and Yvonne’s own family home and even let his good mate Peter Welsh talk him into buiding two substantial homes at Larras Lake for Peter and Julia.

Clydie took on the Boomey Bus run from the late Tom Kind and operated it for many years earning the tag of being strict and tough - but at the same time earning respect from both children and parents.

He was also a long-term beekeeper and honey producer and again was very good at knowing where and when to go to produce the best honey. The comraderie of working with the likes of Des Sullivan, Clem and Ned Marriott, Jimmy Stubberfield and later Ian Gosper, Bettsy, Neil and Rob Eadon - especially in the local area. Many stories were told about camping out in the Tullamore area and nights spent at the Tullamore Bowling Club and the Royal Hotel - but maybe we keep them for another day.

Clydie used to build all his own beehives from bottoms, lids, boxes and frames and he had a very good workshop set up for this purpose. Come the winter months he and the other local beekeepers would work together in this workshop producing boxes and frames and telling stories and of course, eating Yvonne’s famous scones, jam and cream.

Clydie was also a very capable Rugby Union player and enjoyed his years playing with the mighty Molong Magpies back in the mid to late 60’s when they won 5 premierships in a 6 year period. He was chosen to represent the Central West and had many duels with the likes of Maxey Dews from Orange Emus. Molong, back in those days had battles with Yeoval, Bathurst, Parkes, Dubbo and of course Orange Emus.

Ten years or there-abouts John decided to retire from footy. Except he and his good mate, Roger Dunn decided to make a come-back to help out Kevin Hoolahan and the Rugby League boys.

Both Yvonne and Cheryl (Dunn) were delighted after seeing the boys take part in many training runs and a few games - both with a few injuries - decided to retire for good A stalwart of the Molong Community. he loved the town and district and earnt the love and respect of most and many.

His very good mate Brimmer Smith would bring Clydie undone every time he came back to town. Yvonne loved Brimmer but would often be heard giving him a serve for leading Clydie astray.

They would compete every year for a trophy to produce the biggest vegies. I think they finished about equal..

John was mates with a lot of people and had earnt their trust and respect.

He approached his illness with determination and fought the good fight until the very end.. His greatest asset in life was his ‘bestest mate’ and long-term partner, Yvonne. The support and care Yvonne has given to John enabled him to survive the last 10 or so difficult years.

Yvonne, you have been amazing.

As Gossy has mentioned, Clydie was. a great sport man. After all those football injuries had recovered or eased, he decided to take up lawn bowls. As we have already heard, once he put his mind to it, he was determined to succeed.

Clydie took to bowls like a duck to water.

He loved being a part of lawn bowls and especially Molong Bowling Club. It wasn't long before Clydie made his mark on the green and then became involved in the administration of the club.

Clydie became a member of the board, serving as a board member and vice president for numerous years before serving two terms as president from 1998 to 2000 and then again from 2005 to 2007. Clydie was unanimously elected as a Life Member in 2002. He was then elected club patron in 2015 and 2016.

Clydie won the prestigious A grade singles championships in 1999 and 2002. He represented Molong Bowling Club at numerous Pennant play offs, zone events, presidents days and legacy days. He was a feared rival, but at the same time a gentleman to play against.

Bowls is probably where I first met John. Soon after meeting him we struck up an instant friendship that has lasted until he parted with us all recently.

We have shared many beers together through good times and bad.

Clydie and I travelled away representing the club at bowls on numerous occasions. John and I were always roomy's. To this day I don't know why he kept on coming back for more of my snoring, but he was pretty good at that himself.

He wasn't much for people waffling on but I'm sure he wouldn't mind a couple of bowls stories. When he was president in one of his terms as president, I was vice president. Now you have heard how professional he was, how straight he was and that everything was basically black and white with John. Well, he did have

while he was having a beer with good old Max Davis. Dad and Mum sat and chatted for a while then dad got up a bit of dutch courage and asked Mum to the movies and that was that - four kids later and a whole stack of grey hairs..... they were married for 44 years.

Throughout our childhood, we very quickly learnt about the Clyde determination aka bloody stubbornness and that there were no free rides in the Clyde household.

These life lessons have made us the strong family unit we are today.

Dad had many interests in life, one of which included many camping/fishing trips with his mates and on occasion the family.

Dad was a proud member of the Molong rugby club and loved telling stories about his glory days before his body gave way. He was very passionate about his bees. This started as a hobby and grew into a business he was extremely proud of and is his legacy.

Whether you knew him as a family member, beekeeper, cranky bus driver, bowling partner or dear friend, he left a lasting impression and we will all miss him dearly .

a mischievous side. This particular year we had a new young fresh and keen young board member by the name of Tod Allcorn on the committee. It was coming up to President’s day, which is a big event on the bowls calender with a visit from the heirarchy from the Royal NSW Bowls. John invited Tod to sit on the royal table with him for lunch. Tod thought he was the ants pants, Clydie asking him to sit on the Royal table with him. He told Tod that the only condition with this was that they were required to stand up in front of the entire club and sing the Royal Song. John handed him a song sheet and told him to learn it. Tod, absolutely scared out of his mind about doing it, went home, learnt the words to whatever the song was that John had made up, stood up on the day only for John to say, “Tod sit down I was only joking”.

As I mentioned, John and I went on many bowls road trips together. Yes John, I won’t waffle on anymore. This is it.

John, Bettsy, Jim Nesbitt and I went to Sydney representing Molong at my father’s Presidents day at Wentworthville in Sydney. We travelled down on the Friday and all stayed at my parent’s home in Sydney. We went to the club on the Friday night and met a few of the locals and enjoyed a few beers.

Everyone knows how much Clydie loved drinking old beer. Well he enjoyed quite a few old beers that night stating that Old beer was the best thing because you can drink it all night, you know exactly what you are doing and it doesn’t make you crook like the other beer. The next morning, he rose from bed and made his way out to the kitchen where my mother was preparing breaky before the big bowls day. Clydie looking very worse for wear said to mum, “‘Anne, you haven’t seen my bowls pants by any chance? I can’t find them. I know I packed them”.

Mum looked at him standing in the kitchen in his pyjamas and said in stitches of laughter, “You stupid fool, You’ve got them on under your pyjamas”.

His theory about old beer was out the window from then on. Enjoy several more Old Beers my friend. You have earnt them!

The transition to living with ‘endemic’ COVID could be rough (Continued from page 4) “You open up this state and you let the virus in here, and every child under 12 is vulnerable, every single child,” she told state parliament on Wednesday.

The relaxation won’t be done all at once; even so it will be challenging – for example, needing home quarantine arrangements as well as vaccination requirements.

The government’s COVID strategy is built around the national cabinet “plan”, underpinned by the Doherty Institute’s modelling, and buttressed with the catchword “hope” and the promise of a great Christmas.

But grim realities will accompany the transition.

More generally, the Australian Medical Association wrote to Morrison this week warning of a looming crisis in the public hospital system.

“As it stands, our hospital system is not ready to cope with an easing of restrictions, even with increased vaccination rates,” the letter from AMA president Omar Khorshid said. “To prepare we must develop a detailed understanding of our current hospital capacity and model the impact of ‘living with COVID-19’, with the associated caseload increase.”

The AMA suggested a vaccination rate of higher than 80% of the adult population was likely to be required, “given the existing constraints on hospital capacity and staffing”.

With Friday’s national cabinet receiving a report on the health system and its workforce, the government appears inclined to regard the AMA pitch as part of its periodic appeal for more hospital funding.

But from what we’ve seen in NSW, with some hospitals coming under acute pressure, and evidence the WA system is already inadequate, hospitals are clearly a potential weak point in our defences as COVID cases rise quickly after restrictions are eased in coming months.

We know the Morrison government is now totally focused on getting life back to some normality. It stresses this will be done “safely”.

In fact, it is less a matter of opening “safely” than minimising the risks inevitable in opening.

That goes beyond the state of the health system to include issues such as sub-groups in the population who might not be adequately vaccinated when the general community levels of 70% and 80% are reached. Dealing with the risks will demand more nuance than “the plan” seems to provide.

The government is banking on the attention of people – who are now deeply frustrated if they live in NSW or Victoria – shifting decisively off the health issues once life is freer. That, however, will depend on effective management of an unpredictable transition. (theconversation.com.au)

‘There’s no place like home’ is this year’s theme for Regional Development Australia Central West’s (RDA Central West) annual photography competition.

Applications are now open with applicants encouraged to capture the essence of their hometown.

Chair of RDA Central West, Ruth Fagan, said the competition is a wonderful platform to highlight everything that is special about our region.

“There truly is no place like home and the ‘Central West is Best’ photography competition is a great way to capture what you love most about your community,” said Mrs Fagan.

“The Central West is a great place to live and we want to see entries that highlight why there is no place like it – this could be a place, person or an event – and entries also don’t need to be current.”

“We’ve all spent a lot of time at home due to COVID-19 but I think it has led to a deeper appreciation for the Central West so I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s entries and celebrating our region!”

The 1960’s/1970’s : The Times They Are A Changin’ In 1964 a young Bob Dylan released a record that became the mantra for the rise of what became known as - across the world - ‘Flower Power’.

“The Times They are A-Changin” was the message as the ‘baby boomers’ (those born in the late 1940’s/1950’s) entered adulthood in the 1960’s/70’s Taking a look around the countries they lived in - the planet and the politics of the day - the new generation decided they wanted to see ‘change’. Declaring ‘we want to live in a peaceful world’ - we don’t agree with racial segregation, the lack of equality for indigenous communities, for women, education, for the people who live in 3rd world countries across the world.

And so it began - the important era of ‘change’ and with it a time in Australia’s history/world history where the recognition of the environment, the planet - the protection of both - and the protection of people - all people, freedom and equality were spoken through music, poetry, written words ... and peaceful protests.

“As voices became heard ... ‘ Flower Power’ became the leading message as a symbol of passive resistance and non-violent ideology.

The wording is rooted in the opposition movement to the Vietnam War... ...

Flowers became a resounding symbol of anti-war beliefs and encouragement to create change ‘peacefully’.

Change came through ‘freedom clothing’ - the burning of bras (and corsets) replaced by cotton clothing from India - pearls were replaced with beads, hats replaced with coloured

bandanas, round sunglasses replaced conservative eyewear - flared pants replaced trousers and slacks ... sandals replaced conservative shoes. Fringe, crochet vests, and cork heeled platform sandals replaced sensible footwear.

They were intelligent times of ‘messages’ with placards declaring “make love not war” focussed on the removal of young men and women who found themselves fighting in ... and losing their mates ... in a war that had no sense - designed by the politicians of the day.

The Loaded Dog

The Loaded Dog is one of Henry Lawson’s most popular and funniest short story by this iconic Australian writer and poet.

The humorous storyline concerns three easy-going goldminers and their dog, and the farcical consequences of leaving a bomb cartridge unattended.

DAVE REGAN, Jim Bently, and Andy Page were sinking a shaft at Stony Creek in search of a rich gold quartz reef which was supposed to exist in the vicinity.

There is always a rich reef supposed to exist in the vicinity; the only questions are whether it is ten feet or hundreds beneath the surface, and in which direction.

They had struck some pretty solid rock, also water which kept them baling. They used the old-fashioned blasting-powder and time-fuse. They’d make a sausage or cartridge of blasting-powder in a skin of strong calico or canvas, the mouth sewn and bound round the end of the fuse; they’d dip the cartridge in melted tallow to make it water-tight, get the drill-hole as dry as possible, drop in the cartridge with some dry dust, and wad and ram with stiff clay and broken brick. Then they’d light the fuse and get out of the hole and wait.

The result was usually an ugly pot-hole in the bottom of the shaft and half a barrow-load of broken rock.

There was plenty of fish in the creek, fresh-water bream, cod, cat-fish, and tailers. The party were fond of fish, and Andy and Dave of fishing. Andy would fish for three hours at a stretch if encouraged by a ‘nibble’ or a ‘bite’ now and then—say once in twenty minutes. The butcher was always willing to give meat in exchange for fish when they caught more than they could eat; but now it was winter, and these fish wouldn’t bite. However, the creek was low, just a chain of muddy water-holes, from the hole with a few bucketfuls in it to the sizable pool with an average depth of six or seven feet, and they could get fish by baling out the smaller holes or muddying up the water in the larger ones till the fish rose to the surface. There was the cat-fish, with spikes growing out of the sides of its head, and if you got pricked you’d know it, as Dave said.

Andy took off his boots, tucked up his trousers, and went into a hole one day to stir up the mud with his feet, and he knew it. Dave scooped one out with his hand and got pricked, and he knew it too; his arm swelled, and the pain throbbed up into his shoulder, and down into his stomach too, he said, like a toothache he had once, and kept him awake for two nights—only the toothache pain had a ‘burred edge’, Dave said.

Dave got an idea.

‘Why not blow the fish up in the big water-hole with a cartridge?’ he said. ‘I’ll try it.’

He thought the thing out and Andy Page worked it out. Andy usually put Dave’s theories into practice if they were practicable, or bore the blame for the failure and the chaffing of his mates if they weren’t.

He made a cartridge about three times the size of those they used in the rock. Jim Bently said it was big enough to blow the bottom out of the river. The inner skin was of stout calico; Andy stuck the end of a sixfoot piece of fuse well down in the powder and bound the mouth of the bag firmly to it with whipcord. The idea was to sink the cartridge in the water with the open end of the fuse attached to a float on the surface, ready for lighting. Andy dipped the cartridge in melted bees’-wax to make it water-tight. ‘We’ll have to leave it some time before we light it,’ said Dave, ‘to give the fish time to get over their scare when we put it in, and come nosing round again; so we’ll want it well watertight.’

Round the cartridge Andy, at Dave’s suggestion, bound a strip of sail canvas—that they used for making water-bags—to increase the force of the explosion, and round that he pasted layers of stiff brown paper— on the plan of the sort of fireworks we called ‘guncrackers’. He let the paper dry in the sun, then he sewed a covering of two thicknesses of canvas over it, and bound the thing from end to end with stout fishingline. Dave’s schemes were elaborate, and he often worked his inventions out to nothing. The cartridge was rigid and solid enough now—a formidable bomb; but Andy and Dave wanted to be sure. Andy sewed on another layer of canvas, dipped the cartridge in melted tallow, twisted a length of fencing-wire round it as an afterthought, dipped it in tallow again, and stood it carefully against a tent-peg, where he’d know where to find it, and wound the fuse loosely round it. Then he went to the camp-fire to try some potatoes which were boiling in their jackets in a billy, and to see about frying some chops for dinner. Dave and Jim were at work in the claim that morning.

They had a big black young retriever dog—or rather an overgrown pup, a big, foolish, four-footed mate, who was always slobbering round them and lashing their legs with his heavy tail that swung round like a stock-whip. Most of his head was usually a red, idiotic, slobbering grin of appreciation of his own silliness. He seemed to take life, the world, his two-legged mates, and his own instinct as a huge joke. He’d retrieve anything: he carted back most of the camp rubbish that Andy threw away. They had a cat that died in hot weather, and Andy threw it a good distance away in the scrub; and early one morning the dog found the cat, after it had been dead a week or so, and carried it back to camp, and laid it just inside the tent-flaps, where it could best make its presence known when the mates should rise and begin to sniff suspiciously in the sickly smothering atmosphere of the summer sunrise. He used to retrieve them when they went in swimming; he’d jump in after them, and take their hands in his mouth, and try to swim out with them, and scratch their naked bodies with his paws. They loved him for his good-heartedness and his foolishness, but when they wished to enjoy a swim they had to tie him up in camp.

making the cartridge, and hindered him considerably, trying to help; but about noon he went off to the claim to see how Dave and Jim were getting on, and to come home to dinner with them. Andy saw them coming, and put a panful of mutton-chops on the fire. Andy was cook to-day; Dave and Jim stood with their backs to the fire, as Bushmen do in all weathers, waiting till dinner should be ready. The retriever went nosing round after something he seemed to have missed.

Andy’s brain still worked on the cartridge; his eye was caught by the glare of an empty kerosene-tin lying in the bushes, and it struck him that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to sink the cartridge packed with clay, sand, or stones in the tin, to increase the force of the explosion. He may have been all out, from a scientific point of view, but the notion looked all right to him.

Jim Bently, by the way, wasn’t interested in their ‘damned silliness’. Andy noticed an empty treacletin—the sort with the little tin neck or spout soldered on to the top for the convenience of pouring out the treacle—and it struck him that this would have made the best kind of cartridge-case: he would only have had to pour in the powder, stick the fuse in through the neck, and cork and seal it with bees’wax. He was turning to suggest this to Dave, when Dave glanced over his shoulder to see how the chops were doing—and bolted. He explained afterwards that he thought he heard the pan spluttering extra, and looked to see if the chops were burning. Jim Bently looked behind and bolted after Dave. Andy stood stock-still, staring after them.

‘Run, Andy! run!’ they shouted back at him. ‘Run!!! Look behind you, you fool!’ Andy turned slowly and looked, and there, close behind him, was the retriever with the cartridge in his mouth—wedged into his broadest and silliest grin. And that wasn’t all.

The dog had come round the fire to Andy, and the loose end of the fuse had trailed and waggled over the burning sticks into the blaze; Andy had slit and nicked the firing end of the fuse well, and now it was hissing and spitting properly.

Andy’s legs started with a jolt; his legs started before his brain did, and he made after Dave and Jim. And the dog followed Andy.

Dave and Jim were good runners—Jim the best— for a short distance; Andy was slow and heavy, but he had the strength and the wind and could last. The dog leapt and capered round him, delighted as a dog could be to find his mates, as he thought, on for a frolic.

Dave and Jim kept shouting back, ‘Don’t foller us! don’t foller us, you coloured fool!’ but Andy kept on, no matter how they dodged. They could never explain, any more than the dog, why they followed each other, but so they ran, Dave keeping in Jim’s track in all its turnings, Andy after Dave, and the dog circling round Andy—the live fuse swishing in all directions and hissing and spluttering and stinking. Jim yelling to Dave not to follow him, Dave shouting to Andy to go in another direction— to ‘spread out’, and Andy roaring at the dog to go home. Then Andy’s brain began to work, stimulated by the crisis: he tried to get a running kick at the dog, but the dog dodged; he snatched up sticks and stones and threw them at the dog and ran on again. (Continued from page 10) The retriever saw that he’d made a mistake about Andy, and left him and bounded after Dave. Dave, who had the presence of mind to think that the fuse’s time wasn’t up yet, made a dive and a grab for the dog, caught him by the tail, and as he swung round snatched the cartridge out of his mouth and flung it as far as he could: the dog immediately bounded after it and retrieved it. Dave roared and cursed at the dog, who seeing that Dave was offended, left him and went after Jim, who was well ahead. Jim swung to a sapling and went up it like a native bear; it was a young sapling, and Jim couldn’t safely get more than ten or twelve feet from the ground. The dog laid the cartridge, as carefully as if it was a kitten, at the foot of the sapling, and capered and leaped and whooped joyously round under Jim. The big pup reckoned that this was part of the lark—he was all right now—it was Jim who was out for a spree. The fuse sounded as if it were going a mile a minute. Jim tried to climb higher and the sapling bent and cracked. Jim fell on his feet and ran. The dog swooped on the cartridge and followed. It all took but a very few moments. Jim ran to a digger’s hole, about ten feet deep, and dropped down into it—landing on soft mud—and was safe. The dog grinned sardonically down on him, over the edge, for a moment, as if he thought it would be a good lark to drop the cartridge down on Jim. ‘Go away, Tommy,’ said Jim feebly, ‘go away.’

The dog bounded off after Dave, who was the only one in sight now; Andy had dropped behind a log, where he lay flat on his face, having suddenly remembered a picture of the Russo-Turkish war with a circle of Turks lying flat on their faces (as if they were ashamed) round a newly-arrived shell.

There was a small hotel or shanty on the creek, on the main road, not far from the claim.

Dave was desperate, the time flew much faster in his stimulated imagination than it did in reality, so he made for the shanty. There were several casual Bushmen on the verandah and in the bar; Dave rushed into the bar, banging the door to behind him. ‘My dog!’ he gasped, in reply to the astonished stare of the publican, ‘the blanky retriever— he’s got a live cartridge in his mouth——’ The retriever, finding the front door shut against him, had bounded round and in by the back way, and now stood smiling in the doorway leading from the passage, the cartridge still in his mouth and the fuse spluttering. They burst out of that bar. Tommy bounded first after one and then after another, for, being a young dog, he tried to make friends with everybody.

The Bushmen ran round corners, and some shut themselves in the stable. There was a new weather-board and corrugated-iron kitchen and wash-house on piles in the back-yard, with some women washing clothes inside.

Dave and the publican bundled in there and shut the door—the publican cursing Dave and calling him a crimson fool, in hurried tones, and wanting to know what the hell he came here for.

The retriever went in under the kitchen, amongst the piles, but, luckily for those inside, there was a vicious yellow mongrel cattledog sulking and nursing his nastiness under there—a sneaking, fighting, thieving canine, whom neighbours had tried for years to shoot or poison. Tommy saw his danger—he’d had experience from this dog—and started out and across the yard, still sticking to the cartridge. Half-way across the yard the yellow dog caught him and nipped him. Tommy dropped the cartridge, gave one terrified yell, and took to the Bush. The yellow dog followed him to the fence and then ran back to see

what he had dropped. Nearly a dozen other dogs came from round all the corners and under the buildings—spidery, thievish, coldblooded kangaroo-dogs, mongrel sheep- and cattle-dogs, vicious black and yellow dogs— that slip after you in the dark, nip your heels, and vanish without explaining—and yapping, yelping small fry. They kept at a respectable distance round the nasty yellow dog, for it was dangerous to go near him when he thought he had found something which might be good for a dog to eat. He sniffed at the cartridge twice, and was just taking a third cautious sniff when—— It was very good blasting powder—a new brand that Dave had recently got up from Sydney; and the cartridge had been excellently well made. Andy was very patient and painstaking in all he did, and nearly as handy as the average sailor with needles, twine, canvas, and rope.

Bushmen say that that kitchen jumped off its piles and on again. When the smoke and dust cleared away, the remains of the nasty yellow dog were lying against the paling fence of the yard looking as if he had been kicked into a fire by a horse and afterwards rolled in the dust under a barrow, and finally thrown against the fence from a distance. Several saddle-horses, which had been ‘hanging-up’ round the verandah, were galloping wildly down the road in clouds of dust, with broken bridle-reins flying; and from a circle round the outskirts, from every point of the compass in the scrub, came the yelping of dogs. Two of them went home, to the place where they were born, thirty miles away, and reached it the same night and stayed there; it was not till towards evening that the rest came back cautiously to make inquiries. One was trying to walk on two legs, and most of ’em looked more or less singed; and a little, singed, stumpy-tailed dog, who had been in the habit of hopping the back half of him along on one leg, had reason to be glad that he’d saved up the other leg all those years, for he needed it now. There was one old one-eyed cattledog round that shanty for years afterwards, who couldn’t stand the smell of a gun being cleaned. He it was who had taken an interest, only second to that of the yellow dog, in the cartridge. Bushmen said that it was amusing to slip up on his blind side and stick a dirty ramrod under his nose: he wouldn’t wait to bring his solitary eye to bear—he’d take to the Bush and stay out all night.

For half an hour or so after the explosion there were several Bushmen round behind the stable who crouched, doubled up, against the wall, or rolled gently on the dust, trying to laugh without shrieking. There were two white women in hysterics at the house, and a halfcaste rushing aimlessly round with a dipper of cold water. The publican was holding his wife tight and begging her between her squawks, to ‘hold up for my sake, Mary, or I’ll lam the life out of ye.’

Dave decided to apologise later on, ‘when things had settled a bit,’ and went back to camp. And the dog that had done it all, ‘Tommy’, the great, idiotic mongrel retriever, came slobbering round Dave and lashing his legs with his tail, and trotted home after him, smiling his broadest, longest, and reddest smile of amiability, and apparently satisfied for one afternoon with the fun he’d had.

Andy chained the dog up securely, and cooked some more chops, while Dave went to help Jim out of the hole.

And most of this is why, for years afterwards, lanky, easy-going Bushmen, riding lazily past Dave’s camp, would cry, in a lazy drawl and with just a hint of the nasal twang— ‘’Ello, Da-a-ve! How’s the fishin’ getting on, Da-a-ve?’

Sport Molong Golf Sunday Mixed Only the mad keen golfers were at Royal Molong golf course on Sunday or should that be just the mad golfers. The spring weather from earlier in the week had disappeared and winter conditions had returned. Ged gave up a cooked breakfast from his children to play golf but I think he was going home to a baked lunch. Some around town had measured around thirty millimetres of rain and the course was quite damp. We had eight players and played a eighteen hole two person ambrose. Ged and Scott were the winners followed by Bell and Justin with Justin hitting the drives and Bell sinking the putts. Our coaching guru Bro thinks Stubba could use some coaching with club selection because he says a nine iron is used for a lofted shot not a punch and run like Stubba

Young cattle suitable for the feeder and trade buyers made up the bulk of the yarding along with odd pens of grown steers and heifers. There were very few young cattle to suit the restockers, and there were only 60 cows yarded. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c dearer and more in places, with prime vealers selling to 572c/ kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 460c to 565c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 458c to 570c/ kg. Feeder steers were 4c cheaper, while the feeder heifers were 6c/kg dearer.

Feeder steers sold from 470c to 570c, while the feeder heifers sold from 470c to 537c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers remain strong with the young steers selling to 700c and the young heifers 595c/kg. Steer yearlings to the backgrounders sold from 578c to 674c, while the heifer yearlings to the restockers sold from 561c to 674c/kg.

I’ve heard people say that putting is fifty percent technique and fifty percent mental. After watching Paul and The Ghost Walker putt I’d say it’s fifty percent technique and ninety percent hopeful thinking which I think adds up to one hundred and forty percent which is why neither of them are one hundred percent sure of how to putt.

The golf club would like to thank Robert Reagan and Elders for their generous donation of chemical for weed control on the golf course fairways. This will help to greatly improve the fairways after the proliferation of weeds and the club is most grateful for this donation.

Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am with the possibility of again playing a eighteen hole two person ambrose. to 12c dearer, with the prime grown steers selling from 430c to 490c/kg.

The prime grown heifers sold from 404c to 480c/kg. Cows were around firm with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 290c to 385c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 404c to 426c to average 417c/kg. Bulls sold to 341c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 1 September

There were a few pens of good heavy weight lambs yarded along with fair numbers of fresh new season lambs. There were also a few consignments of Merino lambs and hoggets which varied in condition.

Most of the usual buyers were in attendance with the exception of the supermarkets.

Trade weight new season lambs were up to $13 cheaper selling from $180 to $233/head to average between 895c and 925c/kg cwt.

Trade weight old lambs were up to $14 cheaper selling from $142 to $242/head. Heavy weight lambs were $10 cheaper with the 24 to 30kg lambs selling from $220 to $286 and the lambs over 30kg ranging from $290 to $356/head to average 910c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were also cheaper with few to compare to in the previous sale. Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $165 to $218 while the heavier weights sold to $236/ head.

New season lambs to the feeders sold from $177 to $190 while light weight Merino ewe lambs sold to the restockers from $111 to $150/head.

Hoggets sold to $232/head.

There were some top sheep along with some very plain sheep in a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were $6/head cheaper.

Merino ewes sold from $80 to $186 while crossbred ewes sold from $120 to $210/head. Merino wethers sold from $100 to $200/head.
