“We’ve got a secret”

The Express found this group of gorgeous ones ‘secretly’ painting some works of art at the Molong Early Learning Centre earlier this week. “What are you making?” we asked. “We’re not telling. It’s a secret” came the proud response from Malaki Bujeia, Sienna Hanrahan, Heidi Bunting and Jaxx Neville. The happy pre-schoolers then returned to their brushes and paints and helping each other with very clever ideas. We suspect the ‘secrets’ may well appear wrapped in special hand designed paper on Mother’s Day this Sunday. See P.6

Campdrafting & Rugby at the weekend

The 2019 Molong Campdraft was held last weekend at the local pony club grounds. Competitors came from the local and district areas and from other regions. This is a fantastic annual Molong event.

Dimitri Lajovic and friends built a very high tech Rugby scrum machine nothing like the usual pipes and pads structure you see around country Rugby fields.

This one has as much computing power as horsepower, enabling scrums to measure and record their efforts, individually and together, to within an inch of their lives.

Dimitri explained that the machine is able to exert variable forces against a scrum, and individual players, and at the same time precisely

measure their effort, resistance, balance and a range of other information about the players’ action as down against it.

Dimitri, Steve and Paul took the machine to Dubbo for a weekend recently where a Rugby squad from St Joeys (Sydney) were conducting a training camp for some 50 boys.

On the Saturday night the boys were dining at the Commercial Hotel and were joined by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, apparently taking refuge there to avoid a protest rally at the RSL Club.

“growMOLONG” to tackle some New ambulance station another health milestone big problems Public meeting next Tuesday

The fledgling growMOLONG community group is getting on with a number of business and growth oriented initiatives.

The groups’s President Les Dean submitted the following update: What stamps a location, a town, or city as a place to visit, to give it the thumbs up or even a place to settle?

The members of “growMOLONG” think we have the answer with several projects being put forward.

But it’s to be expected there are always a few challenges to be overcome, and one of the major ones is the possibility of a large portion of the town being flooded, as has happened on far too many occasions in the past.

This prospect, always present and lurking in people’s minds has negative consequences on property values, insurance issues and puts lives at risk. The latest and possibly the most destructive was the 2005 flood which left the town without a business centre for several months.

Cabonne Council has instigated several studies over the years, mostly from outside organisations, with the latest due to be released soon. “growMOLONG” has investigated the floods and compiled documentation and reports which we hope will complement the efforts of Council and be a part of their deliberations.

Our study will however be different, with input from locals who have been through these floods and come out the other end with a magnitude of local knowledge and experience.

Please come to our next meeting, view the video and pictures hear from our panel of past SES, Fire Brigade, Council employees and shop owners.

We will launch our documents, including a 2010 engineering study, somehow lost or put aside, which has some positive answers to be considered.

Council’s 2019/20 plans and budget out for consultation

Cabonne Council has notified that the draft 2019/20 Integrated Planning & Reporting documents will be available for public inspection and comment from Wednesday 1 May 2019.

Copies of the documents can be viewed on Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au and will be displayed at Council’s Molong, Cudal and Canowindra Offices; Canowindra, Manildra and Molong libraries; Cumnock, Eugowra and Yeoval Post Offices, Cargo General Store and the Business Enterprise Centre Orange.

Comments may be mailed, emailed, lodged online or left at the Council offices up until 5pm on Friday 31 May 2019 (See notice page 14).

Orange General Manager resigns

Gary Styles, General Manager of Orange City Council has resigned, effective this Friday.

Mr Styles GM for the past 14 years handed in his resignation, apparently not long before Tuesday nights Orange City Council meeting.

join me in thanking Mr Styles and wish him all the best on his next endeavours.”

During this time Mr Styles has presided over many generational projects, much growth and change in the Orange district, as well as the vast everyday services that Council provides to its community.

Mr Styles said he wanted to thank his colleagues at Council for their support over the course of his tenure.

Happy Mother’s Day to all women

Miss Kate (photographed above centre) of the Molong Early Learning Centre is a special ‘mum’, educator and special friend to the children who spend (and have spent) their early childhood days at the centre learning new skills, enjoying experiences and discovering many adventures together. Leading by example, the educators at the centre encourage the key elements of life, kindness, respect, manners and most of all sharing, giving ... and love ... with each child encouraged to discover the joy of learning, developing skills and achieving group and individual goals. Happy Mother’s Day to the team of educators and carers at the Molong Early Learning Centre ... who are special ‘mum’s to many children. Happy Mother’s Day to Mrs Alma Neville, who recently shared her 100th birthday cake with family and friends at the Yeoval Baptist Church.

A farm girl from birth, Mrs Neville has celebrated birthdays with her parents, the late Hannah and James Wykes and her 8 siblings at ‘Sea Rock’ Yeoval. Then with her husband (the late Keith Neville at their home ‘Bonfield’ Yeoval. In the following years birthday cakes were celebrated with the couple’s two daughters Laurelle and Deidre, and then extended family of two grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, neighbours, and friends.

A warm, kind, Christian woman, Alma has spent her life looking after others. Like other women of her time, she remained on ‘Sea Rock’ as a young woman helping her father and mother.

When she married Keith, she moved to another property, ‘Bonfield’ where she lived a contented life raising their two daughters, looking after the family home, cooking, washing, gardening and supporting Keith on their 1100 acre property where they grazed sheep and cattle.

“She’s always been a good mum” said daughter Laurelle who now farms the family property. “Warm, kind, a very good country cook (prize-winning), keen gardener - mum still wanders over to the shed during shearing time to keep an eye on things” said Laurelle who holds the fine reputation of being a very skilled farmer herself.

Like other women of her time, before and today - Alma’s warm arms and loving heart have touched the lives of those around her.

Chris Ryan sends something different and special to his Mum for Mother’s Day Chris Ryan is the eldest grandson of Gordon (GT) & Harriet (Mumharry) Caldwell and also of Bill & Massie Ryan of Garra.

With Mothers Day approaching Chris wanted to do something special for his Mum, Gloria Ryan.

GT was very well known for many years and Chris’ Mum loved him greatly.

Chris wanted her to know how much he loved him as well.

Chris has sent us this story. We have sent the Express off to Gloria in Newcastle.

Known to one and all as GT, Mum’s Dad was my Gordon and he has always been the biggest man in my life.

For many years he operated a rural service and manufacturing business with technical skill and a genuine care for staff and customers that was legendary. On his passing, the town closed their doors and the schoolchildren formed a guard of honour for his final journey.

I have always known that he could fix anything.

Shortly after I mastered the ability to talk, Dad carelessly ran over Mums favourite cake tin. It may have only been an old cake tin, but it was unique and very special to her. Holding it for the last time, she was left to cry as I comforted her with “Don’t worry, Gordon can fix it”.

The tin was discarded; however I retrieved it because I knew what to do with it.

On our next visit I took the crumpled remains to his workshop, explaining what had happened and that Mum had cried. “But you will fix it, I know you can”.

“Leave it with me lad”.

I told everybody “Gordon can fix it, Gordon will fix it”.

He tried to mould the tin back into shape but it was just too damaged and he did not know what to do next.

Well, what happened next was that after doing a field service call he was invited in for a cup of tea at the homestead. When offered a biscuit from a unique old cake tin, he excitedly offered to buy it at any price. After explaining the circumstances and who it was for, the tin was freely offered.

With high anticipation I awaited our next visit and was not disappointed. For he gave me back the unique cake tin fully repaired.

I proudly presented it to Mum. ”I told you Gordon would fix it”.

I can only imagine how he felt being able to fulfil my faith in him.

I have worked in high tech customer service for many years and have always aspired to the high standards he set. I am so thankful for having my Gordon to guide me.

There will be many mums, nans, aunties and women of all ages missed by their families (and friends/ townspeople etc) this Mother’s Day. Iris Montgomery (photo below) who passed away this week at 86 years of age, is one of these wonderful women.

A long-time resident of Molong, Iris will be remembered as a sweet, loving and fun woman. Dressed to perfection, pretty as a picture, warm and kind is how Iris will be remembered by a community who felt her warmth and love. Now resting peacefully with her beloved Frank.

Mother’s Day ... Women ... and ‘Kindness’ still come together, to me, as one of the most important and worthwhile combinations in this life.

This perspective, for me, tells me that ‘wisdom’ has finally settled in where I can now take a different view of the role of women.

A fine outcome, a timely one I believe, after 68 birthday cakes, and a lifetime actively supporting all things feminism, women’s rights, working women, Germaine Greer, the importance of childcare, early learning education, better support to working families, equal pay, superannuation for women - etc etc.

Wisdom? ‘Being a driven woman of the ‘baby boomer’ generations I lived life and the adventures on offer - all of which were a mix of fun, scary, off-beat, fantastic. We ‘boomers’ were on a journey of ‘change’, new ideas, breaking through ‘glass ceilings’ as well as ‘solid brick walls’.

With others, I achieved what we were able to for women then and in the future. But did I really understand the role of me, as a woman?

Or, the role of women. Why we were born?

Who were we? What was God or the Universe’s intended role for us?

Whilst it has taken me the majority of the years of my expected life-cycle to figure it out - today, wisdom is what grounds me when I contemplate Mother’s Day and what it means to me.

My thoughts turn to my mum, the late Jean Smith, and the women who came into my life in Molong and other places where I have lived, travelled, discovered, identified with - and learnt from. All of whom I now realise helped me to shape my own life in different ways just as I hope I helped to shape theirs.

We women of the ‘baby boomer’ generations believe we made a difference by supporting the rights of women so that life could be different, better for them today with more benefits, better options and choices ... and opportunities.

Howevr, my new found ‘wisdom’ advises me that our generations simply had the ‘baton’ passed to us by the generations of women before us. Our generations were simply the ‘caretakers’ of the baton with the opportunity to add to and to deliver to women today - and them to women of tomorrow.

‘The Baton’? Wisdom tells me that the invisible baton holds a package of core values - kindness, warmth, respect, manners, love all of which are the true ‘essence of a woman’.

A package being delivered by women of today and will be - by women of tomorrow. Standing with and living by these values is the true role of women. Our purpose. Our achievement.

Happy Mother’s Day to all women of all ages ... from all backgrounds, cultures, religions.

For in this world, we are and will remain as ‘one’.

$16.7 MILLION FOR WATER SECURITY PIPELINES IN CABONNE It's great to see work complete on the drinking water pipeline from Orange to Molong Dam, Cumnock and Yeoval.

It means for the first time, Cumnock and Yeoval will have access to piped drinking water.

It's wonderful to see the new $2.5 million Molong Ambulance Station officially opened last week. The commitment to build the ambulance station was made when I was the State Member back in 2015 and I know the community is as delighted as I am to see it complete.

The former ambulance station on Riddell Street had been serving its community since 1989 and this new station will ensure local paramedics have a modern base to deliver their life-saving care from. The new ambulance station builds on the $15 million hospital re-development next door, anchoring health services in the district for decades to come.

My congratulations to everyone involved.

Working together with the community as a State MP to deliver the ambulance station and hospital re-development has been a real highlight of my parliamentary career.

GUANNA HILL'S A GOER I'm really delighted that the $43 million re-alignment of the Mitchell Highway at Guanna Hill is now complete.

One of the first community meetings I had as a State MP was with concerned residents over that very dangerous stretch of road. There had been many accidents, fatalities and community anger was white-hot.

For 30-40 years people have been trying to get that stretch of road fixed and many said it wouldn't happen. Well, it finally has!

At the end of the day it was people power that delivered the funding, because all of those voices couldn't be ignored and together we got it done.

Grand Plans, Skeptics & Conspiracy Theories In last week’s Express (May 2nd, 2019), we printed an article titled Politicians again show “Real Genius“, and given the subtitle “The view from The Other Side” by me.

Sent as an email by a reader, it was harshly critical of governments past and present, and of institutions responsible for research that often influences government policy.

Prompted by questions from another reader, I carried out some research on sources used in the submitted piece and found that at least some of the statements made were to be found in an online blog by a Joanne Nova, the author of the “Skeptics Handbook”, blogger and “libertarian”. Though Ms Nova would appear to agree that there is some degree of global warming, she believes that it is not nearly as serious as the overwhelming majority of scientists argue and that the rise will only be in the vicinity of 0.5°C. In her blogs, she often puts forward the view that the push to renewable energy is nothing but a money grab on the part of governments and some corporations.

Lack of an apostrophe and US spelling aside, “The Skeptics Handbook” raised alarm bells. How can anyone of scientific background (Ms Nova has degrees in microbiology, among other things) dispute the findings of the overwhelming majority of the world’s climate scientists? Some of her comments also suggest that she believes in conspiracy theories, though whether or not she follows those who accuse NASA, China, the UN and a cartel of Jewish bankers of spreading fear of climate change to aid them in their quest or world domination is not known.

To anyone who cares to think about such things, to deny the scientific evidence on climate change is akin to denying that vaccination has saved millions of lives and untold suffering or believing that the world is under the covert control of a race of lizards from outer space who appear to humans as Jews. Before you spit out your cornflakes over that last statement, one candidate in the forthcoming election believes that it is so.

So, if you’ll bear with me, I’d like to go back to that article and look at some of the points it raises. The first was in connection to the reference to the Whitlam Labor government’s plan to build a vast network of pipelines to carry gas from the North-West Shelf to every major city in Australia. Obviously it was something Ms Nova doesn’t agree with, something she has in common with the Liberal Party then led by Malcolm Fraser and the English government of the day, though the latter’s objections may have been based more on the fact that Whitlam’s government had said it was going to use loans arranged by “a mysterious Pakistani” (Nova’s words) rather than from a British institution.

Having blasted Whitlam and his government for daring to have a grand plan for Australia, Nova goes on to harshly criticise successive governments for not having one. Of course, all the reasons for Whitlam’s dismissal by the Crown will never be known until the relevant documents are released by Buckingham Palace, but Nova’s view does seem contradictory.

Ms Nova then goes on to criticise renewable

Over-allocation of water and the associated cronyism and corruption will lead us exactly to where we now find ourselves, but on a larger scale.” energy and the transmission network, delivering “piddling amounts” of power and funded by raising foreign debt, while coal- and nuclear-powered generation plants go unbuilt. Apart from the environmental damage wrought by coal-powered plants and the risks to future generations posed by both, the time involved in building both types of power plant is an important factor. Years, if not decades are involved, by which time the social fabric and economy could be dissolving into chaos unless governments all over the world stop sitting on their hands while Earth undergoes changes on a scale unprecedented in human history.

She also bemoans the fact that no hydro-electric schemes have been built in recent years, and argues for more and bigger dams to trap water that otherwise would go to “irrigate distant oceans”. This is always popular with the proponents of the Bradfield scheme and the dam everything school, but it ignores the fact that water flowing into the oceans is not wasted; it is vital for maintaining the health of estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Fisheries depend on these systems to replenish stocks and to maintain inshore populations of species. Equally important, this run off is vital to the survival of mangroves, the first line of defence against storm-surges. Mangroves will become even more important as sea levels rise.

Also ignored is greed-induced blindness, something seemingly hard-wired into politicians and their corporate backers. No matter how many dams are built, or how

much water and land are “available”, it will never be enough. Over-allocation of water and the associated cronyism and corruption will lead us exactly to where we now find ourselves, but on a larger scale.

Environmental advocates and Indigenous peoples cop a bit of criticism in the first paragraphs, but more of that later. Ms Nova also blames “Canberra and the states” for the protests against gas exploration – presumably referring to the Lock the Gate movement among others – ignoring the fact that these are people-based protests, often made as a direct result of governments’ promining-at-all-costs policies.

She goes on to criticise the CSIRO for contributing to climate change hysteria and science generally for promoting genderequality issues and green activism. Not only is this utter rot, it conveniently ignores the fact that under Tony Abbott’s ultraconservative, anti-science government, the CSIRO was gutted of both funding and staff (as was the Antarctic Division), severely curtailing many of its research programs, climate study among them, and flying in the face of global trends.

Abbott then allocated funding to cancer research (presumably “believable science”), a noble initiative but I suspect more in the hope that his name would forever be associated with a “silver bullet cure-all” while at the same time allowing him to deliver a kick in the guts to those involved in what he believes is the “crap science” of climate studies.

Now to Ms Nova’s concluding paragraph: “As Australia’s first people discovered, if today’s Australians lack the will or the knowledge to use our great natural resources, more energetic people will take them off us.”

It’s hard to ignore the racism inherent in this statement, racism evident in her reference to uranium deposits “sterilised by the Giant Rainbow Serpent”. Okay, perhaps she’s not racist and just believes Australia’s Indigenous peoples are lazy beings who practice a primitive religion that deifies mythical creatures. Just recently, many in the “energetic” and sophisticated Western world were mourning the loss of a building representing a religion whose adherents believe virgins can give birth and people can rise from the dead.

And who are these “more energetic people” poised to seize our coal and uranium? Let me guess…the Chinese?

The Indonesians? Well they’d better get a move on; giant global corporations with no loyalty to any particular country are already in there getting our resources out of the ground as fast as governments will allow. There seems a philosophy present in the corporate world that urges its adherents to make as much money as they possibly can before it all hits the fan. Are the few “energetic” people hoping their money will save them and the rest of us will have to cope as best we can?

Perhaps Ms Nova could revisit that last paragraph and alter it to read something like “As Australia’s first people discovered, the land in which we live is capricious and finely balanced. If today’s Australians lack the will or the knowledge to properly care for it, nature will take it from us.”

The second half commenced ominously for the visitors after White scored again four minutes in, with five eight Simon Dowling holding the ball up nicely for him to burst through a half gap and canter the required 15 metres to plant the ball.

A combination of Canowindra lifting their game and the Magpies rotating the bench meant the scoring slowed with only two further tries to the Magpies. White was again involved in the next one, when quick hands gave outside centre Hugh Westcott space to get to the line from around 20m out.

And if I’ve given the impression that Zac White is a veteran, then you may be surprised and pleased to hear that Ben Redfern scored next. With 13 minutes remaining, he surged over the line from one metre out, after Westcott was pulled down just short.

scored a deserved try, and with Brown having converted the three second half Molong tries, the tally finished at 54-7.

The scrum was excellent, with an extremely powerful starting front row of Darcy Garlick, Knox Bunting and Tyler Ginn, and Ross Cary acting as a replacement, winning many tightheads.

The line outs were also sharp, with Cary doing much of the throwing and the team finally benefitting from some tall timber in the shape of second rowers Angus Sharpe and Mark Gavin.

The Magpies looked good for most of the game, but were understandably a little off at times following their long hiatus. This

actually showed more in the second half, but was probably a symptom of players looking for easy scoring opportunities.

A sterner test will come this weekend in Yeoval (it’s their Ladies Day and everyone is invited), but hopefully some game time will have cleared a bit of the rust.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 1/5/19

Lamb numbers increased with agents yarding 8050 Sheep numbers increased with agents yarding 3200 Lamb numbers increased and quality improved with heavy trades and heavy weight lambs being well presented, trade and restocker lambs made up the balance. Mutton numbers increased and quality was mixed.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $10 dearer, store lambs were up $6 dearer, medium and heavy lambs were $10 dearer. Mutton were $10 dearer.

CTLX cattle market report 7/5/19

Numbers increased with agents yarding 3660. Cows made up 35% of the yarding and quality was plain to better, there was several good runs of feeder steers and heifers, whilst weaner and cattle back to the paddock made up 20% of the remainder of the yarding.

Trade cattle were firm, light feeders were also firm, Feeder steers and feeder heifers were 1c to 2c dearer. Plain to Medium cows were firm to cheaper, whilst heavy cows were 10c/kg dearer.

Magpie Juniors shine against Emus

Another great game in the men's A Grade Pairs final between Kevin Beatty & Craig Troth vs Paul and Michael Davis last Sunday.

It was neck and neck all the way through but there had to be a winner and that being Kevin and Craig.

Well done to all.

Molong Magpies is fielding three junior sides (U7, U9 & U11).

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday we had 7 ladies hit off in an 18 hole Stroke plus Putting, Ann Wood won the stroke with a net 71 and Kerry Oates won the Putting with a total 0f 24.

Next Wednesday 15th we will play an 18 hole Stableford 8.30 for a 9.00am start.

Our monthly meeting will also be held that night starting at 7.00pm. ***************************** Had 25 at golf last Sunday. Oh! sorry.

Just joking!. What a shame. Only had 5. It was a stableford event the higher handicap holders could not keep their composure with the amount of strokes they had up their sleeves compared to the A-Graders. The ghost walker

had a blow out as he was the previous week's winner. The calm and steady Scott Oates was the winner of the day. He must have had a premonition who would win the event - particularly for his fishing trip up north. I hope the fish think that he smells nice and his complexion is good because he won lip balm, shower gel, and a LINX deoderant.

The high handicappers had one thing to say - 'they call it golf because all the other four letter words were taken!'.

Next Sunday no golf due to Mother's Day. However, there will be some sort of a working bee on Saturday 11th to prepare for Veterans Day on Monday 20th May. Signed Jack.

The Molong Bulls were still a little worse for wear with injuries and absences however managed to score against the top of the table Trundle Boomers side last Sunday.

The Bulls went down 42 -10 in fron of a well attended match.

Next week the Bulls are up against Canowindra at Canowindra.

Unbeaten Manildra Rhinos continued their run with a massive 62 - 12 win over Condobolin Rams on Condo last Sunday.

This week they are at home against Eugowra Golden Eagles.

Big Win after layoff

The Magpies played their first game in a month on Saturday, thanks to the withdrawal from the competition of both Trangie and Coonabarabran, and the Easter break.

The game against Canowindra commemorated the life of former Magpie Ian Hanrahan, who died tragically in a vehicle accident in March, and it was great to see the Pythons back playing in the Oilsplus competition.

Molong had the better of the first part of the game, parking themselves in the Canowndra half, but were unable to score as the visitors kept their line intact. The floodgates opened thereafter, with four tries from the 13th to the 21st minute.

The first came from a tighthead scrum win just inside the Canowindra half, and after some good phase play, fullback Woody Mann was on hand to finish off. He

scored again with a stunning try from 60m out, running around the defence and then down the right hand touchline, with some in the crowd remarking that he reminded of a young Zac White.

Playing at inside centre, White was instrumental in the next try, throwing a long cut out pass to winger Joe Reid, who scooted the 25m to score in the left corner.

Again the ratbags in the crowd suggested that White in his earlier years may have just tried to step and score himself.

For the third, White showed his class and the naysayers in the crowd, that despite his aging knees, his football brain is sharper than ever. He ran the ball to the line, close to the ruck, and popped a neat pass to flying flanker Josh Peffer, who stepped a player or two on his 45m run to the line.
