Some coronavirus restrictions could be eased next month - Premier

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the state's tough coronavirus social-distancing rules could be relaxed as early as next month.

On Tuesday, she described social distancing as "a way of life" that would remain until a COVID-19 vaccine was found.

When asked yesterday about the chances of the restrictions being eased on May 1, she said that was possible, and that the laws would be assessed on a month-by-month basis, based on health advice.

Creeks flowing into Suma Park Dam

16 reasons you may leave the house under the lockdown People in NSW are living under Australia's toughest coronavirus lockdown and face fines of up to $11,000 if they break the rules.

The State Government has warned the new laws, which came into effect at midnight on Monday, could be in place for weeks.

It has issued guidelines clarifying when it's OK to leave the house: • Work, if a person can't work from home • School or an educational institution • Shops for food and other essential items • Get medical care • Exercise, but only if the exercise is done alone or with one other person NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said 13 tickets had been issued so far for infringements of the new laws.

"The reality is the messaging that the Premier and Chief Health Officer have been giving over the last weeks and months has not been getting through to some people," he said.

Beyond those essential reasons for leaving the home, the Government has provided a list which would "excuse" somebody being outside.

It includes: • Fleeing an unsafe home, so to avoid injury or illness • Dealing with an emergency or on compassionate grounds • Providing care or helping a vulnerable relative/person • Taking your child to childcare • Attending a wedding (adhering to the fiveperson limit) or a funeral (adhering to a 10-person limit) • Moving house or moving between two places of residence • Donating blood

• Fulfilling legal obligations • Accessing support services such as employment services, mental services etc • Fulfilling parental sharing arrangements of children (the Government says those conditions shouldn't change and children can move between homes) • Going to a place of worship or to provide pastoral care, if you are a priest, minister or member of a religious order.

Sound a bit full-on? So are the potential consequences of getting COVID-19. The idea of these rules is to slow the spread of the coronavirus by limiting contact with others, thereby flattening the rate of infections and ensuring our hospitals are not overwhelmed.

So far, Australians have been doing a good job of following the rules. The number of new infections recorded every day is falling. But our medical experts have warned now is “not the time to take the foot off the brake” - complacency could see Australia lose its window to contain the outbreak, and cases rapidly explode again.

Whenever you go out, you must stick with just those in your household or up to one other external person, and you should keep your distance (about two steps or 1.5 metres). Wash or sanitise your hands regularly and ditch the handshake and the kiss hello.

But every state is enforcing these rules differently: South Australia and the Northern Territory, for example, are penalising people for gathering in groups of 10 or more while NSW, the ACT and Victoria have police out looking for breaches of a two-person limit on public “gatherings”.

For the first time in fifteen months, creeks are flowing into Suma Park Dam. A stream gauge located where Summer Hill Creek meets the dam, started showing inflow at 5pm on Saturday afternoon, and by early morning Monday was showing a flow of 60 litres a second. The last time there were natural inflows into Suma Park Dam was 22 December 2018.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said it was good to see 64 mms of rain falling in Orange from the latest rain event from Thursday to Saturday (2-4 April).

“The rain over the weekend wasn’t the heaviest falls of recent weeks, but the important thing is that the moisture profile of the soil in the area around the dam has been gradually building up,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

“The rain fell in the paddocks that feed Summer Hill Creek and Dairy Creek, south of the dam.

The moisture profile there has now reached the tipping-point and is finally producing some run-off. It’s taken so long because the paddocks have been so dry.”

“It’s great news, but I’m glad we’re not only relying on flow from creeks. Our stormwater harvesting and the Macquarie pipeline have already been helping to stabilise the level of Suma Park. It shows

Cabonne Daroo Business awards postponed until 2021

With businesses facing unprecedented challenges as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, organisers of the Cabonne Daroo Business Awards have reluctantly decided to postpone the awards until next year.

Daroo Business Awards Committee chairperson Libby Oldham said it would not be appropriate to conduct the awards this year while many non-essential businesses have been forced to close and others are dealing with a large downturn in turnover.

Mrs Oldham said the business landscape was changing daily as a result of the pandemic and most businesses were now in survival mode.

the benefit of the decision by NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey to give us the new lower triggerpoint when we can start to use the pipeline.”

Totals from March show Orange received 103 mm of rain, well above the March average of 69 mm.

During March, 146 megalitres was added to Suma Park from Orange’s stormwater harvesting system and 303 megalitres came from the Macquarie Pipeline.

“Those two sources of water added 450 megalitres of water to Suma Park during a drought,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “That’s about the same amount as we used during that period. That’s what is keeping us going while we wait for the rains to come.

“It’s a sign of hope and encouragement, but we’re not out of this drought. Suma Park is sitting on 20% of capacity. We’ve got a long, long way back to go.”

Today Suma Park is at 20.06% of capacity up from 19.72% last week.

Orange combined total storage is at 22.08% up from 21.55% last week.

We’re starting to reach the time of the year when there’s less need to water our gardens. Our demand for water will decline and perhaps let our supplies start to build.”

Orange City Council has created a free online business directory, a centralised place for consumers to see which businesses are open and what services are currently available during the current COVID-19 crisis.

As government regulations continue to change and businesses begin to feel the pinch of tighter social restrictions, Orange City Council has designed the online directory to ensure community members can continue to support the services around them.

Orange Mayor Cr Reg Kidd encourages all businesses within the Orange, Cabonne, and Blayney to register their business information.

“This is a chance for businesses to keep their customers up to date on when their store or service is open. At a time when things are very uncertain for a number of owners and entrepreneurs, we as a community need to make sure we are supporting our services at a time when they need us the most,” Cr Kidd said.

Each listing on the directory allows owners the chance to list a detailed description about their business, contact details, opening hours, what offerings and payment options are available, along with any other details that will encourage support from the local community.

Business Orange President Ash Brown said this is a one stop shop for consumers to get up to date information from each business.

“We often see that a simple google search will give us basic information, but at the current time business owners may not think to update information such as their google listing. This new business directory will mean that all local businesses from right around the region are all listed in the one place,” Mr Brown said.

Western NSW LHD (WNSWLHD) maternity services want to ensure women continue to have access to antenatal education during the COVID-19 crisis.

The innovative model will enable women and their partner’s to access education from the comfort of their own home, while complying with social distancing rules.

The classes rotate on a 4 week cycle and each week covers a different topic. The 4 topics include: • pregnancy • labour and birth • breastfeeding • early days of being a parent.

WNSWLHD Clinical Midwifery Consultant, Tammy O’Connor said, “Women and their partners can either dial in for each class or choose any that interests them”.

Classes will run Wednesday nights from 6pm starting on April 8 through to August 26.

“All women need is to have access to a phone or computer”.

“Midwives will be delivering the education, ensuring opportunity for the woman and her support partner to ask questions”. Tammy said.

The Molong Town Crier Molong has been the home of many an interesting character - and still is today with plenty of sharing of stories some remarkable, in fact. Whether these ‘memories’ are true or false, or a little bit of both ... they are worth listening to and enjoyable! Most are based on times gone by, of rough and tumble childhoods, mischief at school, wild rides on horses, shearing shed humour ... and good old Aussie larrikinism.

Larrikinism? Whatever happened to our ability to laugh ... to laugh at ourselves ... enjoy fun, spin a good yarn, to enjoy the character of our residents who hit the high notes of eccentricity, imagination, and choose to live a life which community majority judges as either ridiculous or ignores because it is ‘not of correctness’. Wherever they live ... I love talking with these people and listening to their stories.

Fascinating!

Here is the story of one of Molong’s early characters of the 1920’s - Thomas (Tom) McGeorge who lived in the bush, in a tiny tin shack with earth floors and no running water somewhere in the Shades district (between Molong and Euchareena).

The 20’s were tough times - there were few jobs, few opportunities, families lived in basic often overcrowded homes, shacks, tents. Money was scarce, food was scarce ... yes, times were tough. It was also a time when residents had to grow their own food, kill their own meats with the majority living on rabbit ‘for a feed’.

Stories by early writers, Banjo Paterson, Henry Lawson, Miles Franklin etc talk of the times - of the swaggies who wandered from town to town looking for work, or a free meal for chopping wood. The early writers also talk about how, the referred to ‘down and out’, created their own opportunities to find a warm bed for the night, a grog or two, and a free meal.

Tom McGeorge enjoyed Saturdays in the Molong township - walking miles from the Shades to fill the role of Town Crier.

He was accepted in Molong as an interesting character - but dirty, rough, raggedly dressed, filthy of body, bearded with long hair which was claimed was only shortened when Tom got too close to his open fire. One town barber is said to have commented ... “I would need to see old Tom dipped in a foot-rot bath before I touch him...”.

Did Tom care? ...Not at all. He enjoyed his way of life ... but food and a grog was what he sought.

On Saturdays, he would call at Myors Hardware store (corner of Bank and Watson Streets) in the early morning to collect the bronze Town Crier bell and list of advertisers who wanted Tom to spruik to the crowd. This was an exciting day for town and district. This was the day when farmers, graziers and village residents would saddle up their buggies, timber carts or old farm trucks and ride to town (Molong). It was a free day - and the day when isolation was replaced by family time, town time, shopping, treats, beer and conversation at the bar for men, a shared cuppa and sandwich at local cafes for women to come together ... and free time for kids with the lucky ones having a half-penny or a shiny sixpence to spend.

The route for Tom to follow started at the corner of Bank and Watson Streets, to Edward Street - with stops at each street corner and one in the middle. He would stand on the ‘silent cop’ in Watson Street vigorously ringing the bell and yelling ...

“Hear ye, hear ye, Sale-O, Sale-O, Myzz (Myors) gotta a Sale-O wee (3) o’clock, Wole up!

He would then proceed to the Telegraph

“Teata (Theatre) Mo-ong tu ni, gate shows, ay (8) o’clock”. For his effort, licensee Mrs Campbell would give Tom a free ale.

“Danny Nics (Nicholson) got some noo tensss (tennis) wackets in, seeum.” For his effort, Tom would receive a coin tip. Off to the pub again.

“Sale-O, Sale-O, Giffin sells at the yars Toosdee, cows, sheep” - Tom would receive another coin for his efforts. Back to the pub for another ale.

“Myzzz sale wee o’clok day. Miz Campbell (Telegraph Hotel licensee) has good beer, good beer, (advancing on the bar door) good beer!”

(Mrs Campbell would oblige with another beer for the thirsty and by this time, seriously drunk Town Crier).

Tom then headed to Billy Neville’s butcher shop where some spruiking for the popular butcher provided old Tom with a couple of sausages. Back to the Royal Hotel where the Town Crier would ring, ring, ring his bell inside the pub - until he got on the nerves of everyone in the bar. “For Gawd’s sake give him a beer and get ‘im out of ‘ere’ so we can ave a bit of peace” one patron yelled. Another commented “Pity Bert Cole didn’t put him through the dip with those lambs of his”.

When the pubs and shops closed at 6 p.m. Tom wandered to collect a loaf of stale bread from Mrs Ross, the baker’s wife. Back to Billy Neville’s to collect his sausages and a stroll down to the gas works where old Tom would grab a shovel - head to the gasworks flame where he would throw his sausages onto the shovel to cook.

It is said that old Tom, even though in a very drunken state, was sharp enough still to keep an eye out for Dick White, the gasworks manager who would kick him off the site ... or Mr Moulton the Town Clerk - or worse still - the Council Health Inspector who would take Tom to a much needed bath.

How did Tom manage to find his way home to his shack? Apparently he would sleep it off under the Molong Creek bridge - then walk on home the following day ...

One can only imagine Tom McGeorge’s story and the stories he would have been able to tell about life as the Molong Town Crier in the 1920’s.

Last weekend's popular Channel 9 Getaway program ran a fabulous story about Molong ... and introduced two local creatives who are 100% town supporters, Tania and Justin Lampe of Eden (Bank Street).

The vivacious and delightful Tania Lampe was given the opportunity to talk about her business on Channel 9's popular Getaway. David Reyne (presenter/interviewer) provided Tania with the opportunity to talk about the business she and husband Justin and their family have built. And, how they have diversified, value-added their products and moved on to new products for their businesses changing marketplace.

Within 24 hours of the interview being aired - the Lampe's online site, which links with Buy From the Bush, received a huge number of hits ... and the orders rolled in for the soaps and candles Tania makes ... and the clever steel art which Justin creates.

A new member of the Cabonne Tourism Advisory Committee (Cabonne Council committee), Tania also spoke highly of Cabonne Country ... and promoted the many benefits for viewers to consider "coming to visit us" - once the pandemic is over! In the meantime, Tania is using her home time in social isolation with the couple's children, Riley, Sam and Anna. "But that's not all" as Tim Shaw would say. "I'm creating new products for our shop and online sales" said Tania adding "for when the restrictions of the COVID-19 are eased and communities can shop again". YBM Trekkers tackle Sydney Coastrek

Brazier "What started as a bit of a dare seems to have turned into a bit of an addiction" writes Nic. Brazier of the Molong YBM Accounting and Business Advisors who have now entered a number of teams in the Sydney Coastrek for the fourth consecutive year, with one of the teams this year appropriately named ‘YBM Can’t Believe We’re Back!’. ‘We all thought we’d ticked the box after the first trek’ laughs YBM firm partner, Christine Whybrow ‘but we just keep on coming back’.

The Sydney Coastrek offers a number of distances, ranging from a 15 km night walk to 30 km and 60 km treks along the Sydney coast line.

Teams of four people, more than half of whom need to be women, walk the event together.

However, following the government’s recent directive relating to COVID-19 - Sydney Coastrek 2020 became a virtual event. Which means participants still walk outdoors - in their own area or area of choice - tracking their walk digitally.

This year’s three YBM teams will be walking the 30 km route from South Curl Curl beach to Mosman. At its completion, YBM will have had 12 teams walk 30 km and one team complete 60 km over the four years.

All Coastrek participants commit to raising funds for a chosen cause, with a minimum of $2,000 to be raised by each team. This year’s cause is Beyond Blue and to date the girls have raised over $3,250 before counting personal donations received. This has occurred through various fundraising events, including bake sales, Bunnings BBQs, 100 Club raffles and of course with the support of fellow-businesses across the Central West.

Previously, the Fred Hollows Foundation

was the chosen charity and the YBM teams collectively raised $28,828 over three years.

We have Cally Woodhouse and Nicola Brazier, who bravely tackled the 60km last year, dialing it back to 30km this year. Then we have YBM team members that have completed the 30km at least a couple of times over the last 3 years, Christine Whybrow, Karen Bollinger, Tracie Milne, Raquel Lech and Rebekah Myers. We have also seconded friends and relatives, Jen Griffiths, Jen Evans, Julie Swain, Julie McCauley and Jane Jones, to join us. Our most valuable team members this year will be our support crew of Elise Heath and Allison Farr.

In between Coastreks, a YBM group annually walks the 28 km Seven Bridges Walk around Sydney Harbour, raising funds for the Cancer Council. Last year this event saw well-known local accountant, Brian Sharp, walk the course in a bright yellow tutu. The firm also usually finds a few participants for the City to Surf and the local running festivals. Exercise is an obvious draw card for staff who spend a lot of time sitting at desks, however the fundraising causes also resonate. The entire firm have supported the staff and the causes for each event. There have been support crew at events, helpers at fundraising BBQs and a lot of donations from the extended YBM family.

Numbers were back slightly for a good quality yarding.

Weaners and yearlings were well supplied and there was solid competition from feeder and restocking orders.

Grown cattle with weight were limited in numbers, and there was a mixed quality run of cows, and restockers were active on the right classes of cows. Trade cattle were limited in numbers, and all the usual buyer attended but not all operated in a market where prices were firm to 5c/kg softer on the limited supply.

A dab hand with all kinds of general repairs and maintenance "no job is too small for me" said Mark who provides services including carpentry, painting, tiling, plastering. "I also like repairing and bringing back to life antique furniture".

Local residents have enjoyed Mark's reliability in getting the job done, leaving the work area clean at the end of the day and job, and working close with home owners and business owners.

A plain quality, and limited offering of grown steers sold to 345c, and grown heifers made to 305c/kg. Cows were back in price 5c to 7c to processors, and cows returning to the paddock sold to firm trend. Most cows to restocking orders sold from 275c to 299c/kg . Medium weight cows to processors sold from 230c to 286c, with the prime condition heavy weights making between 272c and 280c/ kg.

CTLX Sheep 1 April

It was a pretty good quality yarding with a good selection

of trade lambs along with odd pens of heavy weights.

There was also a good selection of young lambs to suit

the restockers. All the usual buyers were in attendance and operating along with additional restocker support.

The lighter trade weight lambs were $5 dearer while the medium and heavy trade weights were $11 to $14/ head cheaper. The 18kg to 23kg 3 scores sold from $160 to $204 to average from 845c to 875c/kg cwt. The few heavy weight lambs were $9 cheaper with the over 24kg 4 scores selling from $190 to $230/head. Restocker lambs were $10 to $13 dearer selling from $80 to $190 with the better lambs averaging $185/head. Hoggets sold to $168/head.

It was a mixed quality yarding of mutton where the light and medium weight sheep were $8 to $12 cheaper and the better heavy weights were firm to $4/head dearer.

Merino ewes sold from $81 to $176 while the crossbred ewes sold from $73 to $228/head. Merino wethers sold to $164/head.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF CABONNE COUNCIL LOCAL STRATEGIC PLANNING STATEMENT

In accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Cabonne Council advises that Council’s Local Strategic Planning Statement is available for public comment. The Local Strategic Planning Statement sets out the following: • the basis for strategic planning in the area, having regard to economic, social and environmental matters, • the planning priorities for the area that are consistent with any strategic plan applying to the area and (subject to any such strategic plan) any applicable community strategic plan under section 402 of the Local Government Act 1993, • the actions required for achieving those planning priorities, • the basis on which the council is to monitor and report on the implementation of those actions.

The Local Strategic Planning Statement is available for download off council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au. Due to the current situation with COVID-19 Council will not be making hard copies available for inspection at Council offices. Should you require assistance, please contact Council on 6392 3200.

MOLONG GOLF Last Sunday 9 players enjoyed the morning walk and played 9 holes - social distance was implemented and all went well. There were 3 winners on equal strokes because there was no countback.

Thank you to Dave and Dave for mowing the course after the nice rain. Without our volunteers golfing would be difficult as some volunteers are out working quite regularly. The greens and fairways will be moved this week. We would like to invite any bowlers if they would like to have a game to stay fit until things get back to

normal. Same again this Sunday.

On another note - thumbs down to the young fellahs who were seen having a hit but driving their 4 wheels and zig zagging up the fairways to where their balls were.

Leaving imprints on the fairways, leaving their empty bottles along the course as well. Our volunteers and members find it disheartening after all the work they do.
