Harriett was married to John Henry Vale Leathem, the third son of Henry Vale and Marion Leathem who founded the Molong Express in October 1876.

Like generations before them, these three Molong locals (l to r) Joey Urban, Bailey Webb, Tom Middleton are spending their school holidays making their own fun ... fishing in the creek, hunting - and simply being together. Whilst the three have missed footy this year (Cabonne Junior Roos) due to COVID-19 restrictions, they have managed to fill in weekends in their local environment. The Express took the opportunity to ask ... "what else do Molong youth need?" Shrugging their shoulders in unison these three high school students sresponded "we're okay". Like generations before them ... they have the creek, the paddocks and the endless natural environment on offer in Molong and throughout Cabonne Country.

Here we reprint a reminiscence from the Molong Express and Western District Advertiser of 5 January 1945 When one reads the Molong paper, now linked with another district paper, with all the latest

world's news, one is forced to call to mind the press of yesterday.

The first paper to be established in Molong was the 'Molong Express.' in the year 1876, just on 69 years ago, by Mr. Leathem, who had six children (four boys and two girls).

Another week in ‘Paradise’ A busy weekend in Molong with visitors coming to what is becoming known as a popular tourist destination. The good news is that it happens to be your town - the town you call ‘home’.

Travellers and visitors are discovering what they refer to as a “friendly” and “charming town”. Let’s keep welcoming residents from Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Parkes, Wellington and further afield when they visit.

Last Saturday the Express headed out to the Molong Golf Club/Showgrounds to watch a championship event for the new sport in town - Disc Golf. With COVID-19 restrictions to comply to - this year’s event was only a small one in comparison with the 2019 event - and what could have been a significant 2020 event.

We enjoyed wandering around observing the final between the 3 place getters in the men’s competition (see page 15). Whilst Disc Golf is harder than it looks - there’s room for all family members skills and participation. Thursday arvos at 5 p.m. - head to the Royal Molong Golf Club/Disc Golf Centre - grab a picnic dinner - and enjoy the longer days in one of the most delightful landscapes in this area. Have a try at what is one of the fastest growing sports across the world.

Well done to the school kids who are doing something valuable with their holidays. See Joey, Tom and Bailey on the front page - who are able to see where they live as a place where they can enjoy what the natural landscape has to offer. There are a number of other young people who come to mind who live a good life, a worthwhile life in this town and district. Hannah and George Betts come to mind - as does Ella Kirby (Lime & Stone), Abby Quinn (Barnseys), Billy (Sweetness Cafe) and others who have managed to find school hols. employment.

There’s more young people out there doing all sorts of work and gathering a bit of pocket money as well - including Robert Barnard who answered a recent call from a new home-owner to help lay turf.

Whilst some residents have ‘concerns’ for the lives of kids today - as a community, let us never give up hope on our young ones. The majority who are doing their best within the patterns/ models of life they have been taught and have learnt to live within.

Which raises the question? Why is it that some kids (and adults) thrive, show respect towards others, demonstrate good manners, hold conversation, and demonstrate a keen interest in learning ‘new’ - with eyes on the future?

Man’s/Woman’s best friend stopped a would be ‘hoody burglar’ in his/her tracks when attempting to break into the Royal Molong Golf Club last Friday night/early hours of Saturday morning. That gives a good enoough reason of one of the benefits of a caretaker role and a caravan park @ the golf club/showgrounds.

Happy Birthday to Judy Clancy of Molong who celebrated a special 80 year celebration with her sister Betty and a small group of friends on Monday 7 October. A delicious lunch was served by Michael and his team at Sweetness Cafe in Bank Street. (Above) Judy and Betty.

Australia Day nominations closing this Sunday

Nominations are now open to Cabonne community members who are Australian citizens and have made a noteworthy contribution to our great community or achieved something outstanding.

Each village across Cabonne has the opportunity to have one recipient recognised from the following categories: Citizen of the Year - A person who has demonstrated excellence in their field or service to the community through their work or voluntary activities.

Young Citizen of the Year - A person under 25 years of age who may be considered an inspirational role model and who has served their

Federal Budget delivers a further $9.8 Million for Dixons Long Point

Cabonne Council has been awarded a grant as part of the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment's Everyone Can Play program to create inclusive play spaces at Morris Park in Canowindra and at the Dr Ross Memorial Recreation Ground in Molong.

The Everyone Can Play program is a commitment by the NSW Government for the creation of better and more inclusive play spaces across NSW. The program supports councils to create and upgrade play spaces across the state to ensure that people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can play.

The NSW Government has committed $87,430 to the Morris Park inclusive play space and $95,865 to the play space at the Molong Recreation Ground, with Council matching these figures.

Cudal Men’s Shed funded

Andrew Gee at Long Point Crossing (Photo: Supplied) The Australian Government has announced a further funding injection of $9.8 million for the planned Dixons Long Point Crossing over the Macquarie River in recognition of the strategic importance of developing the key transport artery.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Decentralisation Andrew Gee said: “This is a very exciting announcement that takes to Australian Government funding for the project to $29.8 million.

“The upgraded crossing will deliver a wide range of benefits to the Calare electorate and New South Wales by creating a crucial new link between the Mudgee and the Cabonne/Orange areas and also the Hunter and Central West regions and beyond,” Mr Gee said.

“This project was recognised as being one of strategic importance.

It has far reaching implications in terms of tourism, jobs and economic productivity. After the economic impact of COVID-19, this capital injection in our local economy could not have come at a better time.

“In terms of the visitor economy, the new crossing will create a

unique regional tourist trail that can be started or finished in Lithgow, Bathurst, Mudgee, Wellington, Orange or Cabonne. The whole Central West region will benefit.

“For more than 160 years, the people of Central Western New South Wales have been seeking a crossing over the Macquarie River at Dixons Long Point. It’s been the Holy Grail of unfinished road projects and it’s time has come.

“The critical investment by the Australian Government not only ensures jobs and an economic uplift for local businesses, it also means safer roads and more efficient travel times.

“There’s been a significant amount of work carried out on the project to date, to the point where we’re just about to launch the design options for public consultation. The design and report work has been very comprehensive and I think people are going to like what they see.

The project work is being commissioned by Mid Western Regional Council in partnership with Cabonne Shire Council and administration through RMS.

Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP, on Tuesday 29 September announced funding for the Cudal & District Men’s Shed, through the 2019 Community Building Partnership Program.

The Men’s Shed will receive funding of $19,470 to go towards expanding the existing building for additional working space, and to include the installation of an accessible toilet and hand-washing facility.

“The Cudal Men’s Shed plays an important role in our community, where men can enjoy the comaraderie of others whilst developing their

skills,” Mr Donato said. “I was only too happy to support this funding application.”

It was lovely to see 29 members at our September meeting. Thank you to Cheryl Dunn and Charlie Watts for bringing in some very interesting objects for us to look at.

Cheryl brought in a very old doll that she had made a new outfit for plus a teddy bear from England and a photo album of her life story.

Charlie brought in the fruit from the Sausage tree which grows in the northern part of Australia, quite an amazing thing to see.

We also heard from Neil Spackman from Yeoval who had spent 44 years in the Army in

various sections including Infantry, Special Forces and Counter Terrorism.

He was very interesting in all he had to tell us including his time out of the Army when he did some shearing and stock work on Yeoval properties.

Our October meeting is on the 13th at 10.00am at the Molong Bowling Club. This will be a luncheon meeting to celebrate our 21st birthday so if anyone has any gifts or photos or anything of interest from their 21st please bring it along for us all to see. Probus is also celebrating the year for older persons.

CV19, politicians and others saying a lot of people who have had the bug and died have actually died of other causes, they died with CV19 but not because of it. Mmmmm isn’t CV19 a respiratory illness worse than a seasonal flu?

Now someone with any hundreds of illnesses, let’s say bad lungs, would normally get a few more yrs if not decades out of their life but then they catch CV19 and die within weeks. Do we say they died of a lung condition? But they also had CV19 or do we say CV19 directly was the cause of this person’s death, if they never had CV19 they would still be alive.

Picture this: 3 possible endings for cinema as COVID pushes it to the brink

Hollywood’s heavyweights joined forces last week to ask the US government to help save cinemas.

Directors James Cameron, Patty Jenkins and Martin Scorsese warned that cinemas “may not survive the impact of the pandemic,” with Hahahaha “property crime low” during c19. more than two thirds Hahahaha what a joke..... likely to fold without a MJ....MOLONG bailout.

Meanwhile, the Parra all the way to holding the prize. release of the next Parra supporters.......Orange James Bond film has been delayed yet again following disappointing ticket sales for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

COVID-19 has done something two world wars were not able to achieve.

It closed cinemas. But to borrow from Mark Twain, reports of the death of cinema have always been greatly exaggerated. First it was television, then home video, then computer games, interactive movies, downloading and virtual reality that spelled the end of the big screen.

There will always be people who want to get out of the house (a desire made more keen by COVID lockdown), buy popcorn and experience the communal magic of the picture palace. Still, that doesn’t mean the new normal will look like the old one. There are three probable scenarios.

Scenario 1: more ‘day-and-date’ new releases to stream at home The previous “cinema-killers” didn’t finish off the industry, in part because it has a history of reacting well to threats. When television arrived it was small and black-and-white, so feature films became all-colour and cinemascope. When torrenting (largely illegal downloading) emerged, cinema responded with the return of 3D — and now 4DX. That said, the film industry has had tense relations with Netflix. The

streaming giant has had a huge impact on how films are made, distributed and screened, thanks to its completely different financial model.

The Will Smith movie Bright (2017), for example, had a Netflix budget of US$90 million (A$125 million). Usually, cinemas take two-thirds of the ticket price, so the studio has to make three times the budget just to break even.

But because Netflix sells subscriptions, not movie tickets, that imperative is removed. We may never know how successful Bright was for Netflix but it makes content purely to convince us that a subscription is a necessity.

Newer players (Disney, Apple, Amazon) have financial models that are even further removed, as their core businesses aren’t in production or screening. If a movie tanks, it won’t make them shut up shop. They have almost bottomless pits of money to support their platforms.

Cinemas do not. Most of their battles pre-COVID were concerned with “windows”: the period of time between a cinema and home release. Currently in the US, it’s 70 days.

COVID has changed all that, as the recent deal between Universal and American Multi-Cinema demonstrates.

In July, a historic deal saw the 70-day window cut to just 17 days with the companies agreeing an undisclosed profit-sharing deal.

So, we’ll see short windows or “dayand-date” releases (meaning audiences can see a film at home the same day as in the cinemas) for most new films. You’ll likely be able to see a new release online or on a streaming service on opening day, just with a large premium compared to the cinema ticket price.

That premium may take a while to settle.

Disney+ released Mulan online only in Australia for A$34.99. Although it made US$33.5 million (A$48 million) on its opening weekend, the film didn’t increase subscriptions as much as the recent release of the musical Hamilton on Disney+.

Still, Mulan has done reasonably well compared to Tenet, which didn’t give big-budget filmmakers much solace.

Scenario 2: a studio system with some new (familiar) owners In this take, cinema chains can’t make it work financially, and begin to close venues. Regional areas will certainly be affected, potentially less so in cities.

But even if the big chains fail, it is highly possible they will be bought out by those disruptive streamers. Indeed Netflix bought its first cinema in 2019.

This could see a return to the old studio system of vertical integration, where production, distribution and exhibition is owned by one company. Theatres then run at cost or as “loss leaders” where new material can be showcased with the profits coming largely from home sales and merchandising.

In fact, in August, a New York judge granted the US Justice Department permission to end a set of rules called the Paramount Consent Decrees.

Molong Ready Mixed Concrete has been a staple in the Molong Community for about 50 years, and, for the last decade, the Vandervelde family have proudly owned and operated the legacy of the business.

Dusty Vandervelde, as well as his five full-time members of staff, work big days to ensure that they provide the best quality service to customers; with wordof-mouth being one of their main service contributors in the industry.

Concrete contractors and landscape company, Molong Ready Mixed concrete provides the Molong and surrounding areas with several products and services: including earthworks, sand, concrete, aggregates, lime, and gravel, for both individual needs, and commercial productions.

One of Molong Ready Mixed Concrete’s most consistent purchasers is Manildrabased company, ClearWater (CWT): supplying goods for their tanks, and concrete water troughs.

Though the Covid-19 pandemic has seen businesses incur a loss of revenue across varying industries, the Molong Ready Mixed Concrete company has continued with strength, according to Dusty’s wife, Lisa Vandervelde.

“If anything, it probably made us busier,”

Lisa explained. “People are spending a lot more time at home than usual, getting bits and pieces from our yard for renovations.”

While many people spent time indoors during the height of the pandemic, the Vandervelde family spent a lot of their time together at their Betts Street familyowned business.

“The girls really like playing here in the sand and getting messy,” Lisa said. “So do the kids from hockey. During the hockey season, we can have a lot of the kids come over to all have a play in the sand together.”

Back in 2018, Molong Ready Mixed Concrete supplied their sand to the hockey fields for use on the sand-based hockey turf, located directly across the road from the business. “I’d say we’d top it up again when they next need it”, said Lisa.

Though the Vandervelde family can’t predict what lies ahead for the business, Dusty said they do plan to “keep poking along and showing up to work - because we really do enjoy it.”

People of the Molong community have said there is a lot to be thankful for when considering the Vandervelde’s business, and this has been reciprocated by the family in kind.

“We are really thankful for the business, and to the community,” Lisa said. “It’s kept us alive for the last 10 years.”

Justin Packham is “the local bloke” and original creator behind the Pac-Crete Readymix Concrete scenes in Molong.

With the business located on the road “Packham Drive”, now titled after its own namesake, our visit with Justin showed that Pac-Crete was evidently more than just a local business – it’s underpinned by the unity of family, and is hearty in community effort, and solidarity.

Justin owns and manages all aspects of the business, with another full-time member in the crew, and a couple of casual workers at the ready. Justin also added that his father, Keith Packham, was always around to “help out whenever (he, Justin) needed a hand.”

Pac-Crete officially started operating in 2010, beginning after five hardworkingand-eager years of land and business preparations. Since then, the business has grown exponentially – with a huge thanks going out to the local and surrounding communities.

“The business really grew through word-of-mouth,” Justin said. “In the second year of operation, we doubled the business size from the first year, and then in the third year – we doubled again.”

Pac-Crete Readymix Concrete operates on 300-acres of stunningly green, rolling hills, which has been family-occupied land since the 1850’s.

With the help of Justin’s supportive parents, the business land is occupied by fifth-generation Packham’s; run by (sixth-generation) Justin Packham himself; and is accompanied by two of Justin’s proudest achievements – his two young sons – and the seventh-generation Packham’s to date.

While the business continues to prove an ongoing success for Justin, operating Pac-Crete Readymix concrete - like any business operation – hasn’t always run without the odd hiccup here and there over the years.

“We (unfortunately) had one of the tip trucks overturn a while back. It was a big clean up - and cost a lot of money - but we ended up buying the truck outright, and used what was left for remaining spare parts”, said Justin.

Another common struggle for rural businesses has been the result of direct hits from the patent, and uncontrollable

drought – where the intense lack of rainfall left families with tighter pockets, and a realistic sense of increased financial caution. “Obviously when there’s no money to spend, no one spends it.”

Though it was anticipated that the impacts from the pandemic might have hit the business hard here as well, it turned out that the after effects during the peak of the pandemic proved otherwise for Pac-Crete.

“There was basically no impact from COVID,” Justin explained. “If anything, (the pandemic) fast-tracked projects because people wanted to get things done while they had the time off – and there were obvious worries from customers about the (potential) slowing of production.”

The last two months or so have been welcomed as a grateful increase in business than usual, with Pac-Crete steadily creating and distributing dryconcrete mix, fine and coarse sand, decorative stones and pebbles, woodchips, gravel and granite, and includes more even still.

Some of Justin’s business ventures for the future include the ongoing construction of a shed to expand business on the property even further, with a bit more landscaping to ‘pretty the place up’ as well.

(From page 1) Here we reprint a reminiscence from the Molong Express and Western District Advertiser of 5 January 1945

“When one reads the Molong paper, now linked with another district paper, with all the latest world's news, one is forced to call to mind the press of yesterday.

The first paper to be established in Molong was the 'Molong Express.' in the year 1876, just on 69 years ago,

by Mr. Leathem, who had six children (four boys and two girls).

Mr. Leathem was owner and editor and was a fine type of man, but he only lived a few years after the paper's establishment. It was then carried on by his good wife and family for over 35 years, during which time Mrs. Leathem had in her employ many editors. Though the paper was rather on the conservative side, and a great advocate for free trade, many of the editors, in their hearts, were socialists.

After the death of Mrs. Leathem, the sons, Charles

and Jack, carried it on, and after the untimely death of Jack it was carried on by Charles and his widow, Mrs. H. A. Leathem, now of Greenethorpe, until about 12 years ago, when it was taken over by Mr. W. P. Stanger. The 'Express' has since passed into the hands of R. J Neve and Co., which firm has brought it right up to a standard of modern literature.

In the old days, news travelled slowly. The 'Express' office was the hub of important news, such as the Melbourne Cup, boat races and Elections. People would wait hours on the roadside for the mail coach to come along to hear the news.

MOLONG'S SECOND PAPER. About 1894, Dr. Ross, who was the Member for Molong for 24 years and a protectionist, could not hit it with the 'Express,' so he established the Molong 'Argus,' under an editor named Anderson.

He only reigned a few months when he sold out to a young man from Forbes named Baker, who made it a live paper and barracked for protection. He carried on

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

Fifty-seven years ago to-day, in a little shed in Riddel Street, opposite where Mrs. Hasemere’s store now stands, the first number of the ‘Molong Express’ was published by Mr. H. V. Leathem, father of the present generation of newspaper men of that name.

Many and varied changes have come to our old town since Cobb and Co.’s coach brought Mr. Leathem here from his home in Gundagai, and through them all the history of the ‘Express’ has been an integral part of the history of Molong has left its mark upon it, for in every fight the paper has fought for that which it believed to be right, and in the best interests of the town and district, and can proudly claim today that it has never shirked a duty or accepted a bribe.

Throughout the long drawn out battle for direct railway communication with the city, the sturdy old pioneer, who came to Molong in a coach, spared neither time nor money in the endeavour to provide improved means of transport for those who came after him, and it was largely a result of his enthusiastic advocacy of this particular route that finally placed Molong on the railway map of New South Wales.

Many years later, when a second newspaper had been established, and its proprietor, the late J. C. L. Fitzpatrick, of revered memory, sought political honor, the ‘Express’ stood solidly behind him, trade rival though he was, and left no stone unturned to secure his return ‘to Parliament, realising that the interests of the district, always first with the paper, would also be first with him.

How true that vision of devoted service was the years that have passed bear witness.

The hurrying march of events that has touched our district, moving one well-known figure here, and placing another there, like pawns in a game of chess, has brought changes to the ‘ Express’ also, and though Mr. Charles Leathem is still to be seen in the windy doorway, with a smile and a joke for his innumerable friends, under his regime the old plant has been enlarged and modernised, the hand press having been replaced by a faster machine, electrically driven, and instead of the tedious old process of hand setting the type, a modern linotype machine eats up the copy, and, like Oliver Twist, still asks for more.

During the war period, when soaring prices and scarcity of material made publication difficult, the management stoutly refused to consider a suggested increase in the price of the paper, and later, though hard hit by the prevailing depression, battled on, and now, feeling the throb and lift of returning prosperity and encouraged by a gratifying increase in its number of subscribers, has decided to extend the scope of its operations to embrace a bi-weekly publication.

Molong has a community garden

Molong and Packham’s Triumph The ‘Pear-fect Pair The Molong Community Gardeners meet each and every Thursday morning at 9.30 a.m. in the fabulous gardens located between the Anglican Church and Cabonne Council’s Family Day Care (adjoining healthONE) in Bank Street.

The initiative of members of the Anglican Church (including Mary Iffland, Margaret Philipson, Miss Bloomfield, Leon Paix) these community gardens offer the local community a free range of herbs, flowers, vegetables in season, rhubarb, fruits and a chance to take a look at a thriving Packham Triumph Pear tree that produces the world favourite pear that was propagated in the Molong district.

Cheryn Johnson of healthONE is a wonderful supporter of the community garden - where she recently helped the members to take a look at other types of gardens - particularly those that require less water.

Cameron Wild, local gardener extraordinnaire and conservationist, responded to the call from members to introduce them to the different styles of gardening that conserve water usage - but allows them to grow vegies.

Wicking bed gardens allow for the watering of plants from below the ground - rather than

productive, different, community based, exceptional grounds, all welcome

from above. These garden beds are containers with water reservoirs at the base - like a giant self-watering pot. Moisture is drawn up through the soil via a process called capillary action or wicking. (See illustration below).

Gardening club members and the local community have been fascinated with Cameron’s building of a Wicking garden bed at the community gardens. Now planted with vegies - members are very grateful for Cameron’s help and the donations kindly made by local businesses.

The Molong Community Garden is a notfor-profit group who are currently working on growing succulents for sale to raise $$’s to buy mulch, plants, sprays etc. “The group only gather at the gardens for a couple of hours (at the most) each Thursday where all hop in and do what they physically can to support the project e.g. watering, weeding, planting, composting etc. Plus picking and delivering freshly grown vegies etc to residents not able to wander into the gardens at their own leisure to pick their own.

Please come along and enjoy the solitude of these gardens and the harvest. Enjoy!

FEDERAL BUDGET SNAPSHOT Getting people back into work is at the heart of the 2020 Federal Budget, which was handed down this week.

But for Calare specifically, there is a strong focus on recovery and resilience.

We have a long road ahead as we recover from the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, drought and bushfires. We need to focus on being more self-sufficient and more resilient in times of crisis in the future.

Here are some of the ways the 2020 Federal Budget is helping to achieve that:

$250 million Regional Tourism Recovery Package

$1.5 billion for Modern Manufacturing Strategy

$50 million extension of Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate scheme More Central West farnmers will have access to practical support to help manage the drought with the Australian Government committing another $50 million for the Onfarm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.

Many local farmers asked me to go into bat for them on this, that’s what I’ve done and the Federal Government has delivered. I am now calling on the State Government to do its part to match this Federal funding and waive any administration fees on the program.

The rebates cover up to 25 per cent of eligible infrastructure costs, capped at $25,000.

Part of our JobMaker Plan, the Modern Manufacturing Strategy will make Aussie manufacturers more resilient, competitive and better equipped to compete globally.

$200 million will be spent on projects to boost local infrastructure in regional communities, $100 million of which will be dedicated to tourismrelated infrastructure.

The package also includes a $50 million Regional Tourism Recovery initiative to assist businesses in regions heavily reliant on international tourism, and help them to adapt their offerings, experiences and marketing to appeal to domestic visitors.

The centrepiece of the Strategy is the $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative which will see the Government strategically invest in projects that help manufacturers to scale up and create jobs.

The Modern Manufacturing Initiative will support projects within six National Manufacturing Priorities: Resources technology and critical minerals processing; food and beverage; medical products; recycling and clean energy; defence; and space.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in particular, many young Aussies are dealing with disruptions to their education, sudden unemployment, mental health issues and economic insecurity within the family.

So, my colleagues and I want to hear from our youth, particularly those aged 15 to 24, about the policies that affect them via an online survey. The results of the survey will help shape the priorities, policies and programs that affect youth.

A new Express feature for our farming/grazing readers and home-gardeners In addition to the soil chemistry we have been discussing in previous editions of The Diary, it is also important to keep in mind the physical condition of the soil as well. Continually cultivating our paddocks, driving heavy machinery over them (including tractors, spray rigs, headers and trucks) and constant trampling by grazing livestock can have an impact of the structure of the soil which may restrict crop and pasture growth.

This is known as soil compaction and typically develops as layer between 10 and 40 centimetres in depth when caused by machinery impacts, and to a maximum depth of 15 centimetres when caused by trampling livestock.

Other hard layers are known to be caused by natural soil packing and chemical processes and these can occur at any depth.

Compaction is defined as the compression of soil particles into a smaller volume, reducing the size of the pore spaces available for air and water. A soil is typically 50% solids (ie sand, silt, clay and organic matter) and 50% pore spaces which are occupied by air and water.

Whatever the cause of the compaction, the result is reduced water infiltration and storage as well as reduced root penetration and growth, resulting in restricted access to nutrients and moisture stored at depth.

Some soil types are less susceptible to compaction than others due to the type of clay lattice structure the soil is built around. The self-mulching and black cracking clays of the north west tend to crack themselves as they go through a wetting and drying cycle and are less susceptible to compaction, while the hard setting red-brown earths of the central west tend to be more susceptible to compaction.

Compaction caused by livestock is usually associated with a chemical imbalance in the soil and an extended period of wet weather, particularly if stock are unable to be moved because of the weather. I have observed a number of grazing oats paddocks that stock were kept in longer than planned during the wet winter this year, and as soon as the paddocks dried up and the weather warmed up a bit, the top 10-15 centimetres set rock hard. One of these paddocks in particular, when tested revealed a calcium percentage of 46% (desirable level is 65% - 70%) and a magnesium percentage of 28% (desirable level is 12% - 15%), indicating that it would set hard like a cricket pitch when compacted. This paddock requires a liberal application of lime (calcium carbonate) to increase the calcium and reduce the magnesium levels which will soften the soil and make it less susceptible to that type of compaction in the future.

Compaction caused by machinery is more difficult to detect and more difficult to correct. Many farmers now use a moisture probe to gauge the depth of stored moisture in the soil profile. These tools are simply a length of 10 mm diameter steel rod with a small cone on one end and a handle on the other which is pushed into the soil. It will go through wet soil but will be almost impossible to push it into dry soil. This same tool can be used as the first indicator of a compacted layer as it will

A more refined version of the moisture probe is a penetrometer, a similar tool but with a pressure gauge attached as part of the handle, allowing the force to push the probe into the soil to be measured in pounds per square inch (psi) or kilopascals (kPa). As a rule of thumb, if the pressure required for the penetrometer to penetrate the soil is less than 1,500 kPa (approximately 200 psi) the soil is not compacted and there will be no restriction to root growth.

Between 1,500 kPa and 2,500 kPa it is said to be moderately compacted with root growth being restricted more as the pressure rises, and if the pressure required exceeds 2,500 kPa it is said to be compacted with root growth severely restricted.

The soil has to contain moisture at all depths for the penetrometer to work. After a dry period when the soil begins to wet up again, there may still be a dry layer deeper in the profile, and in this situation we need to use a shovel to locate that hard layer to determine if it is caused by being dry or there is in fact a compacted layer in place.

I have been monitoring compacted layers on a number of properties throughout the central west over the last six months and it appears as though a compacted layer between 15 centimetres and 30 centimetres is quite common. Most paddocks were less than 1,500 kPa in the top 15 cm, with many showing pressures of 2,000 to 2,500 kPa between 15 cm and 30 cm, and quite a few with pressures up to 4,000 kPa in that same layer. In all cases, the pressure dropped to 1,000 kPa to 1,500 kPa once the penetrometer went below 30 cm, indicating good soil moisture levels throughout the profile but a quite badly compacted layer between 15 cm and 30 cm.

So how do we remove the compacted layer to allow better root growth and ultimately improved crop and pasture production? There are both mechanical and biological/agronomic options we can pursue.

The mechanical options are basically deep ripping to physically “bust up the hardpan” using whatever machinery you have. This is an expensive option as it requires a lot of energy to pull a chisel implement about 40 cm deep, and it needs to be done when the soil is dry to achieve the maximum shattering effect.

The soil may recompact if the management system remains the same, and the time will depend on the soil type, with more susceptible soils in the central west showing evidence of recompaction under wheel tracks within 12 months of ripping.

A more effective and longer-term solution is to approach it with a biological/agronomic solution by cropping with deeper and stronger rooting crops and pastures. The tillage radish industry has developed over the last few years, with aggressive rooting depths up to 50 cm penetrating the compacted layer and leaving open vertical channels once the radish is finished. Radish can be grown with a variety of other species to provide a nutritious multi species pasture. Figure 1 shows the root depth of radish when compared with a traditional turnip.

As they rot, these roots supply organic matter to the rooting depth and greatly assist in the rehabilitation of compacted soils.

Other agronomic measures include controlled traffic farming (also known as tramlining) where all the farming practices are undertaken on permanent wheel tracks throughout the paddock. The wheel tracks become severely compacted but the remainder of the paddock should remain compaction free.

Zero tillage farming also helps to reduce the number of passes by tractors and machinery over the ground, particularly if done in concert with tramlining. Careful planning of machinery widths is necessary and may require machinery upgrades to match the width of various implements.

So – if you think you may have a compaction problem it is worth investigating further as considerable benefits can result if those crop and pasture roots can properly penetrate to depth and access moisture and nutrients stored deeper in the soil profile.

Included in that number were 3,500 new season lambs. The quality was very good with a good selection of trade lambs along with some excellent heavy weights. The usual field of buyers competed in a strong market.

Trade weight new season lambs were $11 to $15 dearer selling from $160 to $198 to average between 800c and 840c/ kg cwt. Trade weight old lambs sold from $147 to $187/head. Heavy weight lambs were $20 dearer and more in places with the new season lambs over 24kg selling from $198 to $222/head. Heavy weight old lambs sold from $178 to $250 to average between 725c and 770c/kg cwt.

Merino ram lambs sold to $210/head.

Young lambs to the restockers were firm selling from $119 to $145/head. Hoggets were dearer selling to $200/head.

There were 1,320 mostly good quality mutton yarded where most grades were $11 to $18 dearer. Merino ewes sold from $90 to $176 while crossbred ewes sold from $130 to $200/head. White Dorper ewes received up to $175 and Merino wethers sold to $162/head. The restockers paid from $117 to $137 for light Merino ewes.

It was a good quality yarding with a good selection of young cattle to suit the trade buyers, feeders and backgrounders.

There were also some very nice grown steers and heifers yarded along with a good selection of properly finished cows.

A full field of buyers were at the rail including an additional southern export processor.

Young cattle to the trade were firm with prime vealers selling to 437c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 375c to 415c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 350c to 433c/kg. Feeder steers were firm to 4c dearer selling from 385c to 419c/ kg. Fair numbers of steer yearlings to the backgrounders were 12c dearer selling from 368c to 469c/kg. The few weaners to the restockers were cheaper on quality with the steers selling from 386c to 440c while the young restocker heifers sold to 433c/kg.

Molong Golf Ladies There was no golf last week due to the wet weather but next Wednesday 14th we will be playing 18 hole stableford 9 for 9.30 tee off. ******************* Sunday Mixed Sunday was a lovey day for golf.

We had 16 players enjoying a game at the Royal Molong. Some played 12 holes, others played 18.

An interesting day eventuated as some players teamed with people they had not played with before. Confusion over what was being played by a couple of elderly

players because there were two and three other groups on the course. But all was sorted thanks to people in the carts. Nice to see Les and family and Bruno and others that we hadn’t seen for a while out enjoying a hit.

Winners on the day were Scott for the 18 holes, with the 12 holes event going to Jim, Bruno and Erin.

Next Week: Another draw on arrival for partner’s event. T-off 8.30 a.m. - 9.00 a.m.

Congratulations to the Disc Golfers who held a great day on Saturday.

Manildra Bowls Two pairs championship games played at the weekend with social bowls Saturday and Sunday filling the greens.

On Saturday Graham Fliedner and Toby Weekes edged out Frog Gosper and Ned Kurta in a thriller whilst Scott

Gosper and Guy Smith defeated Brent O’Neill and Jimmy Nash on Sunday with the finals coming up.

The club was packed all weekend with locals and many visitors enjoying the food, TAB and refreshments.

Last Saturday saw a large crowd gather to compete in the annual Molong Cup Disc Golf Croquet event, held on the grounds of the Molong Golf Course. The Central West Disc Golf Club was We had 9 players last Saturday and it was good to see David Wade originally to host the NSW State Championships this weekend, but with COVID restrictions in back. It will be the same again this Saturday 2.00pm at the Bowling Club place were only permitted to run an event which was limited to competitors from across the Central West.

The weather was beautiful and the course looking glorious as the competitors teed off for the first of their two rounds of 14 holes, with 22-24 RIDDELL ST MOLONG players divided into five different e:admin@molongrsl.com.au divisions.

After some great shooting local star Claire Neville took out the Junior division, with brothers Noah and Will Matthews taking out second and third from Lydia Philpott, who was very close behind. The depth and quality of the junior division bodes well for the future of the sport in the Central West.

The Female division saw Sharon Costa shoot two solid rounds to just beat the very talented Diana Philpott, with Erin Oates cleaning up third place.

This event was also a huge success due to the support of many groups and businesses within the community, who have continued to support the growth of the sport and the establishment of the permanent course. A special mention must go to the members of the Molong Golf Club who have given generously of their time to keep our course looking spectacular.
