Would you have gone?

Centenary of Armistice 2018

104 years ago the Australian Government promised to send

20,000 men to war. As it turned out, 416,809 young Aussie men and women enlisted for World War One - 62,000 were killed 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner. Refusal to enlist was judged by some communities as “un-Australian”, “cowardly” with white feathers handed out to the concientious objectors accompanied by bullying tactics, humiliation ... and the suggestion of public disgrace. Would you have gone? Would you have encouraged your sons to go? 100 years ago Australians, in every corner of the farmlands, towns, cities - and in the communities of Molong, Manildra and Cumnock promised to remember those who had participated. That’s why we have both Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. 100 years ago - at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month peace was declared - shooting and bayoneting stopped - lives were saved. Those who could gladly returned home. Many of our young remained buried in the deep mud and shifting sands of faraway lands - a long way from their mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, fiancees, sisters, brothers and mates - and the towns and paddocks they loved. We should not forget them nor the precious lives lost. 100 Years Ago your community made a promise that they and future generations would remember them. Please take a little of your time this Sunday 11th November @ 11 a.m. to remember them. Lest we forget.

Planning for new Community Centre to begin “Shovel Ready” and “community supported” are the buzzwords repeated ad nauseam by State and Federal Governments when calling for projects to be funded via a range of grant funding. It means the project must be ready for immediate start and early completion - so that the grantee Government can get the reflected glory before, say, an election. Anyway, that’s fair enough and it is with this in mind that Cabonne Council has authorised preparation of and wide public consultation on a detailed brief and plans for a new Community Centre in Molong. Long overdue, Molong has one of the shabbiest community halls in the Shire, current facilities are inadequate for larger events such as weddings, functions and meetings. Council is awaiting the outcome of its application in Round 2 of the Regional Cultural Fund for a new library

and learning centre in Molong on land situated on the site of the current Mitchell Room and adjoining council land in Bank Street. Following an onsite inspection by councillors and staff of the existing Mitchell Room and Molong Community Hall, it has been decided that concept designs be prepared in relation to the possible replacement, not only of the Mitchell Room, but also the community hall with a more modern multi-purpose community centre incorporating the library and learning centre proposals. The drawing up of plans of a suggested design will enable cost options to be obtained with a view to entering into community consultation whether to proceed with such a proposal. Such consultation would be required

under the “Capital Expenditure Guidelines” of the Local Government Act. These guidelines require extensive community consultation and enable the financial impact of the project to be quantified, identified and controlled. It is estimated that preparation of detailed plans would cost in the vicinity of $25,000.
